I absolutely agree about the transaction price, but all depreciation is based on msrp. It's all they have to go on, and it can be very misleading. The transaction price on an $80,000. car is probably $7 to $10,000. less depending on what time of year it was purchased.

Seems like a high asking price. The CTS is A6 size right? 4 banger doesn't seem appropriate; although I know the A6 can be sold that way too.

Not a caddy expert but I think the CTS is a mid size. The 4 is a turbo.

Yeah, the 06+ engine is a mixed bag. Yes, they beefed up the IMS a little versus the earlier ones. But they also made it impossible to replace. So if there is any sign of metal in your oil filter, it's not a $3-4K job, it's well into 5 figures. So I'd go early or post 09 as already mentioned. Or something else entirely.

Maserati Spyders are solid, right?

Funny enough, I was going to say a buyer is probably better off with a Mas. Just gotta get '07 or better to get the ZF transmission. Or find one with a manual.

When I lived in Chatsworth CA (far north LA County), I often spotted coyotes and cougars not far from my condo rental as well as on the school campus area up on the hilltops.  When we spotted these critters, we signaled each teacher to keep the kids indoors until the all-clear was sounded.  There were many instances of little children being carried off by these adult critters.  Very scary when we spotted them close by.

It's funny, I've heard comments on these boards about Porsche engines being only good for 50k miles. Seems like this bearing thing was the culprit. Now why wasn't that rather glaring defect trumpeted all over like the Caddy head bolts, Chrysler et al slugding problems and various short-life transmission woes?

Is it because we expect high performance cars to be finicky and hum drum daily drivers to be super reliable or do Porsche fans just have a forgiving nature?

I know when the old Mazda rotory motor wore out seals at 50k miles it pretty much killed sales for 20 years.

Oh there were lawsuits over it and some owners got relief. The reason for a lack of more publicity is, I think, twofold: a) there are far fewer Porsche 996 buyers than Chevy buyers and b) it's hard to muster any sympathy for the distress of the well-to-do.

Besides, there is a bright side--we bottom feeders get to buy 996s at reasonable prices, and especially Boxsters for dirt cheap. Like all professional sports, however, it's not a game for rookies.

I think the answer is sheer volume. Porsche is a niche brand for mostly the 1%. Okay, maybe the top 10%-15%.

So while many Porsche's may have died an early death, that's a drop in the bucket compared to cars suited for daily drivers that may have been sold exponentially more often.

I do think high-end buyers have a more forgiving nature. For one, if the 200,000 dollar Porsche or Ferrari is broken down, they can just take the lousy S-Class instead to work. But for the average American, a car being unreliable is unacceptable as it can mean missed work and missed pay.

I don't see how Land Rover would still be in business if this wasn't the case.

This seemed fitting since we are talking about Porsches, and it is the weekend. This just cam in today;

A sixteen-year-old came home with a Porsche, and his parents began to yell and scream, "Where did you get that car?"
He calmly told them, "I bought it today."
"With what money!?" demanded his parents. "We know what a Porsche costs."
"Well," said the boy, "this one cost me fifteen dollars."
The parents began to yell even louder. "Who would sell a car like that for $15.00?" they asked.



"It was the lady up the street," said the boy. Don't know her name -- they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Porsche for $15.00."
"Oh my goodness!" moaned the mother, "she must be a child abuser. Who knows what she will do next? John, you go right up there and see what's going on."
So the boy's father walked up the street to the house where the lady lived and found her out in the yard calmly tending to the flowers. He introduced himself as the father of the boy to whom she had sold a Porsche for fifteen dollars and demanded to know why she did it.

OF, I like it too, but it seems to be priced at least double what is reasonable,to my way of thinking. I didn't see any mention of mileage, which may mean the odo is broken or it is unknown. Neat ol' Dart.

Definitely not a cougar. It's a lynx, also called bobcat in the US. Lynx are much smaller than cougars, shy by nature, sand generally too afraid of people to attack, even smaller size (children) as they don't have nearly as much body size, as cougars. They're also from different felidae family. Cougar is Panthera, same as lions, tigers, jaguars, bobcat is Lynx.

Oh how that brings me back to my country club days working in the bag room. I could tell stories for days over how members would have the wife and kids in tow in the Lexus SUV for Sunday brunch but then show up for an early morning tee time on Tuesday in their Mercedes roadster with a different and much younger female in tow. And don't even get me started on what went on at the club's annual Christmas party.

I was surprised when I read your statement as I had only heard of one child killing by coyotes ever recorded and that was because the stupid parents were feeding them and left a 3 yo unintended. I looked it up and darn if there aren't 160 recorded attacks on humans and suprise...suprise..mostly LA county. What are they smoking out there?

In my area Coyotes are very afraid of humans and mainly nocturnal. On the rare occasion that they ventured on my property in daylight I had no problem chasing them off on foot unarmed.

A new problem is that up in Canada (thanks driver100) there has been some interbreeding between Coyotes and wolves resulting in a bigger more aggressive hybrid. This sub species has been wandering south for some years and my be responsible for some incidents.

The Bobcat? I wouldn't go within a mile of one without a shotgun.

End of the nature lecture.

Haha. That would mean you'd get most 996s for free.

No, what you do is bring it to Dieter and Hans and they check it out for rear main seal leaks first off, then they remove the oil filter and saw it in half and look for metal debris; then of course they check all the electronics, do a complete scan and read-out, check brakes, suspension, etc.

If no metal debris, and no rear main seal leak, you make a sober offer and then change the oil in the car every 3,000 miles, sawing the filter in half each time. This gets expensive but.....

If no metal debris but a rear main leak, then you plan to spend another $4000 to replace the rear main + a modified IMS bearing. (exception--on some models of Boxster you have to split the engine case to do the IMS, so you're screwed--just ask Hans or Dieter about this beforehand).

If there IS metal debris, you hand the keys back to the original owner and you may or may not choose to give them the bad news.

They call it "coywolf". I watched a documentary on it. Fascinating. BTW, they also showed "normal" coyotes free roaming in suburban neighborhoods in certain areas of the country at night, but staying "invisible". Very crafty creatures. I know there are some coyotes living near my house, as I hear them yapping on regular basis. Their voice is very different from that of dogs - high pitch, 15-second outbursts.

Oh how that brings me back to my country club days working in the bag room. I could tell stories for days over how members would have the wife and kids in tow in the Lexus SUV for Sunday brunch but then show up for an early morning tee time on Tuesday in their Mercedes roadster with a different and much younger female in tow. Being the suspicious guy that I am, clean oil in a car like that has to be a cover up. Kinda like, "if it is too good to be true, it..."

Believe me, I wouldn't put anything past some car flippers. YouTube Craigslist car scams. On a pricey Porsche I could see some character swapping out used oil from another car or some other convoluted trick to get you. On CL the frauds cut CEL wires, power wash oil leaks, mask blown heads with quick fix powder and make up elaborate stories like "I took it off the road because my brother, the owner, is overseas "or"I bought it for my (take your pick) wife, mother, daughter but she can't (drive stick, gave up driving, thinks it's too big).

Don't feel bad. I just picked up my son's Sable at my trusted indie shop after an oil change and found out it needed ball joints. Luckily on that car it's under $400. Bad news the alignment was so screwed that he needs new tires.

Any idea how ball joints go bad in 57k miles?

I now have visions of the 91 yo lady previous owner driving to church on the rail road tracks.

I would get a second opinion on those ball joints. These are often sold when they are just fine.

If this wasn't my trusted indie shop that I've gone to since I was 16, I probaby would. I also saw the uneven tire wear. I offered him a chance to rip me by saying "if you find anything else wrong fix that too" . He said everything else was fine. He's always been a straight shooter.

Even dishonest "fix this fix that fix everything fraudulent" shops don't try it on a Camry. Everything's always fine.

When I lived in Chatsworth CA (far north LA County), I often spotted coyotes and cougars not far from my condo rental as well as on the school campus area up on the hilltops.  When we spotted these critters, we signaled each teacher to keep the kids indoors until the all-clear was sounded.  There were many instances of little children being carried off by these adult critters.  Very scary when we spotted them close by.  

A new problem is that up in Canada (thanks driver100) there has been some interbreeding between Coyotes and wolves resulting in a bigger more aggressive hybrid. This sub species has been wandering south for some years and my be responsible for some incidents.

The Bobcat? I wouldn't go within a mile of one without a shotgun.

Blame Coywolves on Canada too, along with snow and rainy weather and those tacky Fords we changed into glitzy Meteors. We are a pleasant people who won't get upset, if it helps, blame the Coywolves on us, no problem.
