Interesting Christmas day here yesterday. After the bit of snow and ice in the morning, it got mild and rained to wash it all away, so my earlier snow-clearing efforts weren't needed. But after the rain stopped the wind came and man, it blew hard. The reports today were of gusts up to 75 or 80mph in areas, and lots of people lost power. The noise of the wind was quite loud, almost comparable to the hurricane we experienced here in 2004. The house was creaking, I found a persistent wind whistle around the front door I will need to fix, and lost a couple of 3' sections of roof shingles from the front of the house which landed on my back deck. The roofing company is closed today but I imagine they will be very busy tomorrow. I see my neighbor's house has some roof damage as well. But that is mild compared to some of the pics I'm seeing this AM. This was a long section of chain-link fence with those privacy slats inserted, which got taken out by the wind and landed in the middle of the road:

Lots of reports of trees down:

They say about 80,000 homes are without power in the province and it might be until tomorrow until they get it restored. This might take a bit longer:

It is now sunny, calm but chilly, and supposed to get colder as the week goes on.

I just checked my front windshield and the crack is not only longer, but another crack started and goes all he way to the right passenger side's far right side. The place where the rock hit is now a sunburst. I would imagine that a new crack will start and end up on the driver's side as well the way these cracks are moving.

I called SafeLite and they said the windshield needs to be ordered from a Mercedes Dealership. I checked with my dealership in West Palm Beach and they said there are several in the United States - hopefully one in the Orlando parts distribution center. If not, this could take a week to 10 days before they can bring the car into the glass shop to replace it.

In the meantime, the dealership suggested that I not drive the car because every bump I hit could increase the numbers of cracks and affect my visibility to drive at all. So, I am now a hermit in my own Condo. Luckily, I did my food shopping last Thursday and have enough in the house for a week or so.

I'm wondering what else is going to happen - you have to admit that my life is a Murphy's Law drama. For those of you unfamiliar with Murphy's Law, it basically is interpreted to mean, "...if something can happen, it will happen!"

If they suggested you not drive, you should have suggested they drop a loaner off.

Mike, what is your theory on how this happened? Are there surveillance cameras in your community?

Last night we went out for dinner with neighbor/friends and their adult children. The SIL drove and he had a 7 passenger KIA Sorento. We were in the middle seat. It is a great riding car, comfortable, solid, quiet, smooth, nicely but simply furnished interior. I thought it was a Cadillac since the family is big on Caddies.

It was a bit awkward for adults sitting in the 3rd row to get out.......a big hump to navigate because of the wheel well and the seats in the 2nd row don't disappear....but, I was extremely impressed.

Access to the third row looks quite easy with that opening, apparently a top-hinged bodyside. They don't just have Cadillac beat, they got everybody beat with that feature. :D

I don't have to dream of a white Christmas as Santa left several inches of snow this morning.

    Merry Christmas all

We had a little dusting here in the Burgh for Christmas. The table on my deck shows about an inch at most. I gather the New England area has gotten a lot more than we got. To be honest, my tolerance for snow and cold weather is just about gone. I know most everyone likes the old Norman Rockwell painting of the traditional Christmas scene. Me, I'd rather have weather like the Norman Schwartz painting that Mike has at this time of the year in South Florida. :(

Yeah, that's what I meant---the beer concession in the infield. I messed that up!

I just got my Fios internet connection restored about 10 minutes ago, so I couldn't respond earlier. They had to reboot my garage box. Something I could not have done on my own. Even for a technical wizard like me. Anyway, I'm back.

That was not a mess -up, that was a total screw-up. If I had a heart, maybe I would give Shifty some slack about this and blame it on the egg nog but I don't give partial credit. :@

I would drive it too, but slowly and carefully....try not to hit any bumps. The windshield is part of the body integrity....it could cause some structural damage if you smack something too hard.

That windshield won't be cheap, to replace the one on the 2015 E400 Safelite wanted $1400 for a real Mercedes windshield, and $700 for the no-name one that was built at the same time by the same company according to the manager........it wouldn't have the logo which you guys said would be available on EBay for $5. And that car wasn't as complex as Mikes!

$1500 for just the windshield - does not include labor and calibration costs for the cameras, radar and computers.

Wow, if driving with a cracked window will compromise structure I'd dump that high strung filly and get a mutt hooptie. With those, if the windshield cracks you just kick it out and keep going. No need for and blind spot warning either. You just feel your way by bouncing off cars on either side.

I think Mike got a jinxed car....maybe haunted too. :s

There's definitely more snow up in the Laurel Highlands. While Mrs Pens is getting pampered I may try my hand at some skiing, haven't gone in a few years but brought my gear just in case. There's only so much of the casino I can take before it gets a little boring. I probably won't be out too long though temperatures are only in the teens and will only get lower as the day goes on.

Your windshield is an extremely important component in your vehicle’s structural integrity for a number of reasons:

    Improves body rigidity
Prevents body flex that creates sway when turning corners
    Provides support for the roof
Prevents the roof from crushing down in a rollover
Protects passengers in a front collision
The most important function of your windshield to protect occupants in a collision. When you are in a front-end collision, crumple zones absorb as much of the impact as possible. When energy from an accident gets to the passenger compartment, the windshield helps maintain the structural integrity. Much like the strength of an eggshell, the curved shape of the windshield prevents it from collapsing in on the passengers and allowing the A-pillars to fold in.

I had 2 stone chips repaired in the 2015 E400...if I got a 3rd chip I would have replaced the windshield...by then it may be getting weaker.
I don't think a hooptie is much different, although for $1500 you could buy a few new vehicles....may not be as pleasant a drive though for when Mike goes to visit his brother.

I saw an optimist this evening driving home from Menards. In a spray-it-yourself car wash bay a guy was spraying off a Dart or Caliber or other Dodge product. It's 15 degrees (not Centigrade) and the roads are covered with salt powder from the light snows of the last couple of days. His car wash will last about 1000 feet down the road before he has streaks from salt dust on the sides and rear of his car.

At least at 15 D. F we don't have to worry about the sweating in Florida heat and the high humidity. And it's easy to give the temperature because the numbers are small and easy to speak. LOL

Back home it is -17C or 1.5 degrees fahrenheit. with about 4 inches of snow on the ground.
This afternoon it was 75F in Tampa and right now 64F. no snow.

    IMHO, I prefer Tampa.

We got 5 inches of snow and 6 inches of salt. I'm so sick of this. At least my one good car is asleep in the garage. Now if I can only keep the cat from pulling the sheet off it.

About zero here with just a couple of inches of snow, but I remember last year Dec. was cold here, then Jan. and Feb. was not too bad at all and I was able to play several rounds of golf. Hope springs eternal.

Also, being couped up like this is an excellent time for me, my wife, and the dog, to air all or our petty grievances with each other and put them to rest, somewhat. Then we will be able to get a fresh start on developing a new batch to work for the next time. B)

I got in the car this morning - had to run a few blocks over to the bank and then a quick stop at my doctor's office which is next door. Then, straight home. The windshield has two large cracks - both emanating from the right center of the bottom of the windshield where the stone hit. One moves in a line to the right and ends at the very right side of the passenger's side. The other one moves up a bit and then turns toward the passenger side meeting up with the first crack.

Spoke with the insurance company this morning because my policy expires this Saturday. They said they would honor the claim since it occurred when the policy was in force. SafeLite ordered the windshield yesterday from some Ford Dealership. From what I understand, if a dealership orders the windshield, no matter what manufacturer, they get a large discount from Mercedes. They said the windshield would be in about 10 business days from when it was ordered. So, I will just make emergency uses of the car until it is fixed.

Once it is replaced, I have to take it to a Mercedes Dealership and have the sensors and cameras and radar adjusted and calibrated before the adaptive features will operate. I have to pay for that up front and then submit a claim to the insurance company for reimbursement. I understand it will cost me $500+, perhaps even twice that amount depending on how well the windshield was installed. This is just so much fun!!! :'(

My doctor wants me to have a CT-Scan with contrast done next week due to the overwhelming pain I am having on my right upper abdomen. He said it is quite possible it is a hernia causes by the surgery I has in September, 2016 - when the cut out part of my liver with the malignant tumors. Just something else to look forward to. :o

On a brighter note, that friend of mine who sends me Scotch for holidays and birthdays did it once again. I just got a package from him this morning. It's two bottles of Glenlivit Reserve Scotch. That's what he sent me for my birhtday. He always remembers me - and of course I remember him - I sent him two bottles of Gentleman Jack (Jack Daniels reserve - new on the market, I believe) for Christmas. I know he like Kentucky Bourbon. He said he would let me know how he likes it when he opens one of the bottles New Year's Eve.

Then we will be able to get a fresh start on developing a new batch to work on for the next time. B)

    What were the dog’s grievances?
LOL, Daisy really didn't have any grievances, she is perfect and it takes very little to keep her happy. Her role is that of a mediator.
We also have a Daisy. She would definitely like more people food, which we can’t give her due to old dog GI problems. She also would like more walks please.

    No Daisy around here...just a Doosey. :'(

FWIW, I have heard several times that the most popular name for a male dog is Max.

I'm not going to Google it to find out. I'll let that up to one of our poster buddies. B)

When you say 10 degrees, in my world it's important to add the "above" and make it clear that you're talking deg F, not C. I won't trouble you with the temperatures I've dealt with in the past. Currently I don't wear a jacket until it gets below 40 deg F, the gloves and hat (toque) come out as the temperature heads toward 0 deg F. Below that, I drag out the heavy coat. I just spent most of two weeks in the Minneapolis area where it varied between 8 and 28 deg F -- never got above freezing. Made me smile, so long as there was no freezing rain involved.

Thanks for the nice thoughts on our dog. She's the youngest of three doxies and she rules the roost.

She also had back surgery a few years back, but shes doing well and keeps up with the others with no problem.

Yes, she loves to smile and get belly rubs.

That new Camry does look really nice...except it would have been even better with a nicer front end:

    Front end on less expensive model looks like they decided to add on the lower grill part at the last minute;
