Anything to take my mind off this cold wave.

No humidity. No being too warm and having to run the air condition. No hurricanes. What's not to like about this short spell of weather. We're even sending some of it further down south to share it with them. A little weather in the teens at night for my friends who moved to upstate South Carolina. LOL

My pet peeve is that for the last 3 weeks when I buy groceries they always ask if I found everything I wanted. For the last 3 weeks there were always one or two items I couldn't find. When I say what they were they always say "Sorry". Why did I even bother telling them and why do they bother asking?

Just as the pre-boarding security at airports is referred to by some as "Security Theater", this is called "Service Stagecraft". They don't want to actually ensure you find the item, but need to check off the box that they asked the question to ensure a good score from the mystery shoppers.
When they don't respond to a "No" with any meaningful help, watch their eyes when you ask them to call the manager on duty to the register so you can talk to the manager about what you couldn't find or about the useless quizzing.

Had Comcast come out this morning to put in two new cable TV boxes (both bedrooms).  They both have X1 remote systems which respond to voice commands.  Great improvement in my HD reception.  They also put in a new dual band WiFi router.  Better WiFi capabilities.

Once I get used to the voice command function I’ll report on its capabilities.

I doubt if anyone in marketing thought this through. Someone came up with the idea of asking customers if they found everything they were looking for...no one thought it through to find a solution if they didn't. If I ask for the manager I will have to wait and so will the 6 people behind me in line, then I will have to go and find it and probably go to the back of the line.

I will say the cashiers in most of the supermarkets in Florida are usually people who should really be retired, but it is nice they are gainfully employed....and they are very friendly. Possibly a little slow, but, there genuine politeness is worth it.

I will say, a few weeks ago I couldn't find Bug Off stuff so I went up to a fellow that was making a display and asked him...his badge said assistant manager. He said I can do better than tell you, I will take you there...and he left what he was doing and walked across 3/4s of the store and showed me exactly where it was.

Another time we needed 4 canalones and there was only one left. The fellow in the bakery department at Publix (voted one of the best businesses in the USA) said he would bake us fresh ones and they would be available in 15 minutes....finish our shopping and come back when done. They were excellent canalones...as fresh as can be.

Fun? Usually not. But I did enjoy blowing things up I must say. I think M252 81mm mortars are illegal, though. :p

The military gets you in great shape quickly. You even get a personal trainer who readily offers feedback.

You are funny! Oh yeah, they offer "feedback" all right! Then they sweetly tucked us in bed at night.

I was in a USAR Medical Unit so the only thing I got to blow up were those hand grenades they allowed us to throw. Summer camps at the Presidio, no supervision, no saluting officers who were all doctors...yeah I had it tough. Real tough! Sausalito was where we spent our evenings.

Today was my son's gift: Giants game. It was absurdly cold. Thankfully, most of the action happened in the first half because he could not make it much beyond that. He was very upset at the whole situation because he really wanted to stay but just could not stand the cold any longer. Mind you, this was with 2 layers of thermals, 2 pairs of sweats, 2 jackets, 2 pairs of socks, toe warmers, ski hat and gloves AND inside a sleeping bag. That is just how cold it was. I was managing OK but his body was not keeping up.

Anyway, he was happy for the experience and wants to go back when warmer. I'd have to agree. Really good seats for the first football game for both of us gave me a new perspective.

I broke down and bought a scan tool for my BMWs and Minis. The Mini needs a new battery and the tool will let me register the battery without the need of a trip to the dealer or indie shop. Since most shops charge .05-1.0 hours for the procedure the tool will pay for itself with one use- plus it will perform some thorough diagnostics. The word on the BMW and Mini boards is that it's the next best thing to having INPA diagnostic software, and it is supposedly much easier to use.

Mine cost $21 and confirmed what I already knew, I needed a new thermostat on the van. It was nice to know it worked. I'm looking forward to using it on my next hooptie purchase to see if the seller reset the CEL.

I went to a Steelers game on a Monday night in December quite a few years ago. Big mistake.

One time I went to a Penn State game and it was so cold that the guy I was with had his lips start to turn blue. He didn't want to leave so I went and got him a hot chocolate. He made it to the end, but he was having trouble talking by then.

Well I only have 175 +/- in the Chrysler, but a whopping 50 in the Honda. ;)

That being said when I was a little terror my parents let us kids stay up to midnight on new years eve. We would watch the live feed from times square when the ball dropped and everyone was yelling happy New Year we were put to bed.

It wasn't til I was much older that I found out times square was in New York and we were in Chicago an hour behind New York.

@abacomike X1 voice remote is actually pretty slick. It’s like Siri for your TV. With X1 you can log into your Netflix and Pandora accounts as well as watch You Tube videos.

My theory is that young people only go to gyms to show their wares and meet people. If I was in my 20's I can't think of any other reason to go.

Oh, for sure. I formulated that same theory in the '80s when I witnessed people in my workplace doing it for exactly that reason. It was an alternative to going to bars to hook up. Had the advantage of having more of the body in question exposed for viewing.

The other thing I never quite got was people exercising like mad, then eating triple cheeseburgers with fried eggs and onion rings on top along with a shake on the side (or equivalent mega-calorie dishes). I guess it is a type of personality quirk.
I saw a pic once of a 24 hour gym that was on a slight hill, and instead of stairs going up to front door there was an escalator.

I jogged past a gym this morning - it was packed at 9am on New Year's Day. I bet they make 90% of their money in the first 4 weeks of the year.

I suspect if they had gyms back in the day that weren't just weight rooms, boomers would have been in on it too ;)

The auto parts stores around here will scan your car for free.

The devices the auto parts stores use can't scan for all the BMW codes; I've had that happen more than once. They can't register a battery either. Plus, the unit I'm getting allows you to do quite a bit more than just a scan tool.

Most gyms wouldn't exist without all the new people who sign up for New Years....and then don't come back after 2 or 3 weeks.

Yep. The other thing the biggest chain of the places used to do here was to get a member to spam their office email systems with an offer of a "corporate rate". They would get a bunch of people to bite, many of whom seldom came back after a few visits. Big $ and they made it very difficult to get out of the commitment. Business practices almost as scummy as SiriusXM.

It was on sale for $150 with free shipping. I also bought an adaptor cable for $15 that allows it to work on 1987-1995 BMWs.
