As is tradition, ran to Mile 16 of the Boston Marathon. Really lousy weather, cold, rain, wind. Sparse spectators, saw just a few waves of runners. Almost all in shorts and singlets. Hats and gloves on most. Saw two wheelchairs trikes being pushed, one blind runner with a guide. Inspiring.

Watched for 10 minutes, had to run back to work. Soaked, but I did ~1/7 marathon today!

@Michaell Mazel-Tov on the quick sale of your place. It seems like just not too long ago you bought your current place and put a ton of work into it! Looks great! No wonder it sold so quickly. I'd jump on a house that size for that price built in 2003 too (in my neck of the woods).

    Michaell....Congrats on the new digs.

I’m the same way, big ticket purchases like cars, houses, etc. I buy on a whim.

But, I was just doing research on high capacity SD Cards, and spent two days researching all the 128GB cards to find the best for the price. How much? About $60.

I did something similar a few weeks ago (on SD cards, not big ticket items). After finally choosing a 64GB card and a "matching" flash drive, I took a bunch of time to load a series of audio books onto them for future trips. I then took my shiny new card out, loaded it into the Q7, and promptly received "unreadable device" on the screen. What gives?!

Oh, hah. Minor detail.... the Audi MMI system will only read a 32GB drive. /sigh

I really hope the system in the Forester will manage to read the 64GB flash drive, or I just struck out big time!

I have a very simple 5/12 pitch roof. No hips, no valleys. Just a plain easy slab roof. Got 2 estimates so far. One for $7500 and one for $5300 (my brother has used this guy and thinks he's great).

I lost a couple shingles about a week ago due to high winds. One guy said I should check with my insurance company to see if they would do anything about it. I doubt that will be covered for a 22 year old roof but this guy said he has seen cases where my insurance company (supposedly the best around here for car and house) is pretty good about roof damage at almost any age. Said he has even done several complete sides (not both sides) where just small areas were damaged. I'm not counting on it but they will be out on Tuesday for a look see.

    I'll trade with you. :'(

    jmonroe

I don't blame you one bit for farming out the roof repair! I think I spent nearly four days, all day, laying the shingles on ours when we first built. Early October, highs in the upper 30s, windy, 22' off the ground. I was so glad to be done with that. I put "50 year" shingles on, so hopefully they will last a lot longer than I'm going to care about! Sadly, that was already twelve years ago.

Two interesting items in the news today.

First, they are closing down a Chevy Cruze production line because no one is buying sedans.

They must be buying SUVs because I also heard that the new Lincoln Navigator only spends 7 days on the lot.

It was hard to avoid them and of course, a good salesperson can turn a "flake" into a buyer sometimes. There were times we knew immediately that we had taken the "wrong" customer and we called that "getting ambushed". It happens and it's part of the job. The worst "up" whas the shopper who walked in and said..." Hi, I would like to test drive a ......" I used to try to stay clear of people looking at S-2000's and used sports cars. They seemed to attract the biggest "strokes". Still in the words of management...." You never know?" or " All shoppers are buyers if you work them right!" True? Yeah, it happened!

I use my local dealerships to familiarize myself with new models. I usually try to drive any new Subaru when there are significant updates (new drivetrains, etc.), as well as a few other makes and models. I have no intention of buying from any of the local dealers, and I'm certain to tell them up front that I am just driving today so that they use as little time as possible on me.

They win any which way as far as I can tell. They'll still sell that car to a local sucker, and, if I do buy one of their make somewhere else, they are still the only game in town for service.

If I want to get a hold of a manual Cruze diesel, I'm probably going to have to make that decision relatively soon. Why can't these manufacturers build their vehicles on MY schedule?! :disappointed:

Separate note on that washing machine fix by Q: My washing machine is going on fourteen years old now. I had to pull it apart when it was about nine in order to replace the bearings. It's a front loader, and has two pressed automotive bearings (like what you would have on fixed-shaft axles). Man was that a job! According to the manufacturer, they were "non-replaceable." I think I know why they said that now, but that didn't change the fact that they technically ARE replaceable!

When I got it all torn down, the amount of corrosion on the basket's spider arm (basically the part that connects the clothes tumbler with the shaft connected to the motor) was a bit horrifying. I was hoping for another three years or so before catastrophic failure of the arm... and here I am at five!

Last year, I replaced the water pump and put new shock absorbers on it. All told, I think I've put another 50% of the cost of a new machine into this old one. We have probably run at least 7,000 loads through it; it is getting to the point that I am thankful for every load I get out of it! :D

The electorate also needs to have one. In today's world, that is highly unlikely. Either way, it's a nice thought.

How old is it? If it is about 14 years I would say, you got your moneys worth, time for a new one. That is the way I do it, since I can't fix stuff like that. Or see what JMonroe says - but be prepared for a few pages on a story about the day he decided to fix his washing machine - and how he did it.

We replaced a 20 year old Maytag last year.  The closest thing to old Maytags today is Speed Queen.  Made in USA and looks to be made to last.  Wife likes simple machines and this one fits the bill.  Hoping to get 15 years out of it.

They must be buying SUVs because I also heard that the new Lincoln Navigator only spends 7 days on the lot.

That sounds about right though it's not just people trading in their sedans. The nearby Lincoln dealer's used lot is chock full of Durangos, Grand Cherokees, Explorers, saw even a few of the midsize Lexus (RX350 I think?) so even those with SUV's are trading up. I recall reading that the biggest selling Navigators are the ones loaded to the gills and going for close or over six figures. That's nuts.

Yep, about $80K and up for all the bells and whistles. I think it's competitive in its price class.

    Good for you!
I'll likely have to do the same thing with our Duet washer. Also 14 yrs old. I left it at our previous home for the renters and bought a new top loader Samsung for this house when we moved in. My wife never stopped complaining that it was awful and did not get clothes as clean as our old one. So when the first set of renters moved out 10 mos later, I brought the new washer to that house and the old one back to our home.

I hated to read of Harry Anderson's passing. Night Court made its debut in 1984- two years before I became a judge at the age of 29. It wasn't long before I realized that the show was a stunningly accurate depiction of courts of limited jurisdiction- AKA "The Trenches"-just like the one I practiced in. At one point or another I dealt with the same type of characters Judge Stone worked with- a womanizing prosecutor, a cynical chain-smoking bailiff, a couple of idealistic public defenders and a steady stream of bizarre and/or hilarious defendants, plaintiffs, and prosecuting witnesses.
    RIP Harry...
