It'd be interesting to see the physics they used, as well as if the charged driver was able to (afford to) launch an appeal. Turning left seems like it would be a hard one to beat.

Reconstruction places traveling speed in a narrow range. If that range is over the limit, then that opens one up to liability in the event of a collision. In my grandparents' case, crash evidence estimated the at-fault driver's speed at 55-60 mph.... in a 35.

I've only had to return one thing to Amazon, a dashcam I bought for the fintail that crapped out within 10 seconds (not sure if it was the car or the camera). No issues, free return.

I'm not really sure how Amazon return costs work. Seems to me that anything from their warehouse has been free, but returns to their direct vendors vary on charges.

And what determines "excessive speed". 5 over? 35 over? Something even more subjective? And maybe then some burden on those setting the limits that the limit is optimal? Inept left turners are a big reason I don't want to operate a motorcycle on public roads here.
In this case I think you can easily make the case that not being able to stop within your line of sight would be excessive speed. If you were making a left turn and were unable to see any oncoming traffic and was hit by that oncoming traffic wouldn't you think that the oncoming traffic was doing an excessive speed?

There was a distracted driver-related fatality at an intersection near me last year, so the city reacted and made the intersection no right on red, along with changing the light sequence. Much of it is moot, as I see right on red at the intersection daily - literally zero enforcement. Still chasing that speed bogeyman and little else. I feel very protected. I like normal blinking yellow turn arrows - my city moved to them at many intersections several years ago. They help with congestion. But a few had to be rolled back to normal sequencing, as the diverse and incompetent driving skill in the area couldn't figure it out, and there were several cases of "drivers" breezing through a blinking yellow turn arrow and striking the oncoming car which had right of way. Dumbing down a notch, that's how we roll. That green-red-yellow thing sounds very non-intuitive, and I would love to see one of the "engineers" justify it, especially from an end user standpoint.
We have a few intersections where there are signs saying "no U-turn" or "no right on red" or some such. Usually the no rights are on those intersections with terrible visibility or those with multiple right turn lanes. For some reason, people forget that part in driver manual that traveling through an intersection on red is allowable only when not crossing a lane of travel and unless otherwise posted. In other words, left on red from a one-way street to another is okay, just as right on red is okay. However, right on red from the second of two right lanes (counting toward the left, or center, of the road) is not okay. While they usually get away with such shenanigans (and, it is fairly rampant), sometimes the police monitor those locations to educate drivers on the correct use of these intersections. We also have these odd left turn signals that were recently installed all over the area. For intersections with dedicated left signal ROW, they will turn green with the other lights red. Then, instead of turning flashing yellow, they go from solid yellow to red for about three seconds before going back to flashing yellow. In the meantime, the "go straight" lights turn to green when the arrows turn to red. It's really odd - the answer to a question nobody asked. I treat them like I always have (e.g., yield on green), but it wouldn't surprise me if I was pulled over at some point for "running a red light" during that brief three-second interval when the light is that color.
Typical (over)reaction. There was a project here quite a few years ago where a 2 lane road was modified to a 4 lane with center left turn lanes. They lowered the speed limit from 50 mph to 40 mph. I told the project manager there was not enough sight distance and there may be an accident because of it. Well...a guy was speeding at, what they figured, around 75 mph, hit a car full of college kids who were making a left turn and killed one of them. Instead of attempting to fix the sight problem they lowered the speed limit to 35 mph.
The speed was certainly excessive, but isn't the person who made the left turn at fault? As far as I know you can't impede someone's travel lane. In this case the speed made the accident worse, but didn't cause it.
Depending on the circumstances it could very well be speed that caused the accident. All depends on the line of sight and speed of the car.

I have had the same experience with Amazon. I ordered a set of Husky floor mats (liners) for my new F150 Supercrew earlier this year. I clicked on the wrong box while ordering (my truck does have underseat storage under the rear seats). Consequently, the rear liner was too big by about 1.5 inches. I went on Amazon and attempted to get the floor mats replaced with the correct version, but I couldn't actually do that. I had to request a return shipping and refund, and then order the correct set. Only after going through the online process of requesting the return for a refund did I discover they were going to charge me $20 for the return shipping. Once I realized that, I changed my mind, got out my biggest pair of scissors and trimmed that floor mat. Which now works just fine. But it took me nearly 2 months to get my account at Amazon straightened out. They actually credited my account for the purchase price (giving me an immediate refund, which was nice). But I could not for the life of me undo that refund. I had to wait 30 days, after which time they charged my credit card again because they had not received my return. If what you're trying to do fits their system, you are in great shape. If it doesn't fit, well ...
Yes! I had something very similar happen. I usually only return if there is a problem with the unit. However, in one case, I bought some measuring cups only to have my wife reject them at the door. They cost something like $8. I went through the return process on Amazon, and found out there that the return was going to cost me $6. At that point, I didn't want to return them anymore, but since it already processed it, I just chalked it up to experience and sent the darn things back. Perhaps the best lesson: Don't try to do something nice for the wife and/or house, as I will probably just end up screwing it up. I guess the nicest thing I can do is give her all the cash and get the hell out of the way!
Sounds like you have a problem. I never had that problem because early on I decided that our marriage should be 50/50. Mrs. j interpreted that as meaning I make it and she spends it. If I were to call that off now after more than 50 years of that arrangement, it would be disastrous. Another trip around the dining room table would be a cake walk compared to the consequences of trying that. :'( jmonroe
Remember jmonroe marriage is a relationship between two people where one is always right and the other is the man.

I can also easily make the case that if your line of sight isn't good, you shouldn't make a left turn at all. Funny thing about the line of sight, it goes both ways. If I was unable to see oncoming traffic, or in a position without a clear view, I wouldn't turn left.

Nope doesn't irk me the key word there is talked which is past tense. At the time I said that I could not recollect a time you talked about getting a ticket that wasn't speed related. I then invited you you to show me where you did, you have yet to do so.

You didn't irk me, you validated me.
When the exact thing you falsely claim never happens happens shortly after you claim it, and you think that makes your credibility go up, well, whatever helps you sleep at night  Unless you have a conspiracy theory that I purposely got a non-speeding related citation just to prove you wrong. That would be an expensive and time consuming proposition. Almost as time consuming as searching out years old posts.
Nope, it's usually that when I call on someone like that they tend to go out of their way to show that I am wrong. It's like this, someone always bashes people of one political ideology and then say that both sides are equally bad with never saying a bad thing about the side of the spectrum. When someone points out that they never say anything negative about the other side of the spectrum they come out with some token jabs at their favorite politicians.

My original post was that everytime you posted about getting a ticket it was for speeding and you denied that but I haven't found a ticket post that wasn't speed related.

You could make that case but let's presume that the speed limit is 40 MPH and the line of sight allows you to see traffic doing up to 60 MPH in enough time. Now let's say that the oncoming car is doing 80 and is just beyond your line of sight. Whose at fault?

RE: Amazon. Overall, your chances of getting satisfaction are better than most stores. There are exceptions, Costco, Home Depot, Walmart are all pretty good.
I have over 800 songs on my USB Stick and some people asked for a copy to use in their car....especially good for the long trip to Florida. If I used a $20 Lexar or Sandisc they played fine. The 5 for $25 ones I got from a vendor on Amazon won't work in the car. I wanted to return, I printed the refund label, I mailed it back...got a refund within a week.

When a vendor sent the wrong sauce, they told me to keep the one I had (6 bottles $48 case) and they sent me the right one.

    So far, excellent!

Got call from appliance repair company. Said part didn't come in today.

This is one of those downward spiraling stories. Hope it gets turned around by Monday. We should take bets.
I hope it's not. Maybe I should start shopping for a fridge. I'm getting the feeling the electronics are the achilles heel of modern appliances. That's why I bought the 5-year warranty which was inexpensive I thought.

But what do I do when the fridge is due for the 5-year oil change, i.e., when the warranty expires? I'll have to trade it for a new one.

Seems that fridges are like TVs now. They don't last as long, but have gotten cheap enough that when they break, you toss it and get a new one. so 10 years is probably the outside, and once you crossed 5, disposable.

Most appliances are that way now...cheaper to get a new one. Even the high efficiency furnace went after 12 years...old ones would last 20 to 30 years. I read a lot of these appliances use circuit boards etc and when moisture gets in or water spills on it they go! That happens with stoves, the panels are right where the water can seep in.

I bought a new fridge in 1988, but the price of a new fridge is about the same...for an equivalent model. TVs have fallen....everything is about half the price if you count inflation. So, 5 or 6 years for a fridge, isn't that crazy.

Our furnace lasted 12 years, a new one is $3500, about $300 a year for a furnace.......looking at it that way, not a huge deal. If it last 20 years it would be $175 a year.

Our handyman guy was here to do some repairs. I noticed he had a black Camry that looked pretty sharp, in black with no chrome on it. He said it was a 2007, it has almost 200000 miles on it....Toyota recalled it last year and completely rebuilt the engine. He lost one wheel disc and it would have cost $50 for one, and the others weren't great so he got a set of 4 for $50 at an auto store. He says he would drive the car to California tomorrow, it is reliable and drives like a new car.

I’ve always found that the sellers who are selling a used car blurt out “I’d drive this across country tomorrow”, usually mean “once it’s out of my driveway, it’s your problem”.

With a rare Amazon return, I learned that what they will charge for return shipping is often much higher than what it would cost for you to have it shipped. In my case, it was one-third of what they wanted. Sometimes the seller will cover the cost though.

Odd, I’ve never been charged a return free. Is that because I have Amazon Prime? One of the reasons I use Amazon is because of the ease of returns. Print out the return form and take the item to one of their drop box locations and you’re done. Very easy.

As to the difficulty of getting appliance parts I can totally relate. A few years back I had a Jen Aire range. The main circuit board had to be replaced. Took 2 months! In the meantime I had an oven where I could not use any numbers above 5 to set the temperature. I got very creative.

Since that one doesn't have wheel discs but instead aftermarket wheels, I assume this is like when a newspaper used to run a photo of someone they couldn't actually take a pic of themselves, so they would find one somewhere in the archives and run it with with the caption "from a recent photo"? That one in your picture looks more grounded to the ground than your normal garden-variety Camry.

Ab, Yes, I thought of it after....I should have taken a picture of his car......it looked better, the black discs had no chrome showing and they looked meaner.

I met a real estate person at a party once and she said real estate people have their picture taken and keep it for 50 years. She has gone to open houses and found the real estate person looked nothing like their photo, and were always much older.

His car had no chrome....black on black...it looked really mean, which was good.

That is funny because I have heard that phrase and it usually is meaningless. But, this guy is completely honest and he is very OCD about things like that, so in this case I would believe him.

RR said: I'd call it the nearest thing to life imprisonment...

I would probably think the same way. But, if I needed a reliable inexpensive car, this would probably be something that would appeal to me. It looks substantial and mean, you know it is about as reliable a car as you would find........and it is challenging to see how long a car will last. When money and reliability are major issues, the fun of driving has to - excuse the phrase - take a back seat.

Found my first “glitch” in nearly a year and a half of living with my TLX.

Seems as if Apple Car Play with the iPhone X and iOS 12 won’t work with my TLX.

I can plug it in, and it will work for about a minute, then I get this message on my screen....

“A charging error has occurred with the connected device (happens to be my iPhone X). When safe, please check the compatibility of the device and the USB cable (I use Apple certified cables). Please consult your owner’s manual for more details)”

My iPhone didn’t come with much of an owner’s manual and my Acura’s blurb is, at best, very light on details!

Talked to Apple iPhone support. They said it should work, but it sounds like one of the calls in the iOS sent to have the iPhone charged when connected to USB is being ignored by Acura. I tried the same cable with my MacBook and no problems arose.

After telling the dealership, they really don’t know what to do. I called Acura, and they say it should work.

So, while not crippling, it does mean I can’t use Waze, Google Maps. I can stream music and podcasts via Bluetooth, but that doesn’t sound nearly as good.

But it is still illegal, so you really ought to be careful with your public statements.

Item 2, the most likely cause that a particular USB stick won't work in your car, when it does work in your computer for copying the files, is the format. Probably NTFS, and your car wants FAT32.

    @murphydog,
Not sure if you know but I got a new truck. Less trucky, more lux.

Nice truck! My '17 Laramie has a lot of lux as well, but still enough truck to pull the horses around this summer, and do a lot of exploring of the Cascades this summer.

Now the 2019 Rams (and other brands too) are taking the lux to the next level for sure!

I got ticked off at Amazon today---well, not Amazon, but one of the vendors. I wanted to return a garden hose that burst (split open) when I first used it, and.....wait for it...they want me to send a photo of it. :(

Guess who is never going to buy another item from them until the Milky Way collides with the Andromeda galaxy?

That sounds reasonable. they just want to see proof that it isn't usable. What if you ordered one and were trying to keep it and get another one free? I know you wouldn't do it...but, there are people who do.

Actually, a lot of songs came from videos available on youtube........how are they legal?

I suspect they are not. I used to use a conversion website for YouTube until suddenly it started giving a message that it could not be used in my country, or some such thing.
I also bought about 80 of the songs from itunes...and some are from CDs. I suppose there is something illegal about copying and not paying for use....makes sense. Any song I got from youtube, I got, with no warnings or messages that it couldn't be done, although some may have got blocked if there weren't rights for use in Canada.

Admittedly I skimmed a bit - but appliance issues can be frustrating. I have found for mainstream brands (GE, Whirlpool, Kenmore, etc) you can troubleshoot and find simple easy to follow video's on line. Once you find one and the part number that is needed you can usually find it on Amazon. I still don't "trust" Amazon, but for parts like this you can't beat the price and delivery times. On the other hand I can never find any DIY support for Viking appliances. I can find the parts, though it can take a lot of sleuthing around to make sure.

My best one so far was the thermal fuse that blew on the gas dryer. Replacement part was under $.99 on Amazon and took less than 10 minutes to repair.

Worst was Viking dishwasher were the mother board melted and burned....it is now a GE dishwasher...

By reading through applianceblog forum, I found links to factory service manuals for my washer and dryer showing how to take everything apart or how to get in to repair just one item. Lots of help in the forum there, and others, when I put in the model number or just searched for model numbers for items that seemed similar to mine but different sizes in refrigerators and dishwashers.

Garden hose? I have had two recently. One I had the cardboard insert with the 800 number to call. I believe that one had bubbled out near one end. They use the picture to determine the kind of failure as well as the color and texture of the product to decide if it really is one of theirs.

Then they asked me to show a picture with the ends cut off of the length of hose and they promptly shipped a replacement under their lifetime warranty.

I had a second one fail which was a Lowes hose and I had the card for it too. But I used the Lowes number to get the contact. The failure there may have been because the hose is in direct sun. If nozzle is turned off and pressure isn't released after turning off the spigot at the house, the water inside expands with the heat and keeps applying excess pressure from inside the hose.

Same process. Take a picture and they replaced it. But they were gracious enough to replace it not with another lifetime identical hose, but with a lighter one. My wife and I had trouble lugging the 75 foot hose to reach all areas that needed watering.

Hate to change the topic...appliances are always a favorite. We took Gigi to the vet because of coughing.....seems it is an infection. She is 14 years old and the vet wants to pull out all her teeth. It does make sense, 14 years without brushing or dental work and a dogs teeth go very bad. Any idea how this works out - they claim the dog is fine and doesn't mind. It is expensive, about $1100 plus teeth cost from $25 to $150 each to remove, depending on how hard they are to remove. We will have her vet in Florida check it too, generally vet costs are about half the price in Florida.

    Explorer, check the 3rd comment down;
Toyota has admitted on 2011 in its Technical Service Bulletin that the engine defect in my 2007 Toyota Camry exhibits excessive oil consumption due to the design defect of the 2AZ-FE engine. It requires a piston assembly change to minimize oil consumption however the Toyota dealership refuses to repair it at their own cost. They notified me that they will not cover repairs to the engine due to an arbitrary 150,000 mile limit and a very limited time window between 2015 to 2016,

Amazon is interesting - I do like getting products shipped right to my house, but I don't trust them in terms of returns, or even not selling counterfeit items.

    How did you manage that?

Driver, I just had our 15 year old dachshund, Lily, to the vet yesterday. She had 22 teeth removed, and has 14 left.

The bill was $1200 for everything.

Thanks Michaell.....Ours would come to about $2400 at the estimates we were given. I think we will have it done in Florida...other things have been half the price there.

Truthfully it wasn't much work on my end - Flyer had to do some gymnastics behind the scenes, but once he did - presto my login brought me back to murphydog.

I simply had to give him a few days to get things done.

The reason pulling teeth in Florida is cheaper is because of all the mouths of the elderly that need tooth pulling keeps the money flowing so well that “vet-er-an” dentists cut their costs and disguise themselves as “vets” on weekends.  That’s why dogs “bite” better here in Florida.  :D

WOW, no wonder it hurts when a dog bites you. I never knew dogs had that many teeth and I've had a few dogs in my day. Maybe it depends on the breed.
