Not just shoveling; PITA driving conditions and snow by the roads quickly changes to black and brown filth. Beautiful, undisturbed snow pictures are found on greeting cards
Exactly - like Currier and Ives Christmas cards - who wouldn’t like to ride in a one horse open sleigh? But eventually that picturesque scene turns to slush and messy streets.
Same thing with those beautiful “Wish You Were Here” souvenir post cards from Miami or West Palm Beach showing palm trees with coconuts and gorgeous turquoise tropical seas. A week later those palm trees are blown over by tropical storms.
Yep - there are always pros and cons for any climate controlled area on the planet.
Looks like Tropical Storm Michael is going to miss the Souteast Florida Coast. But the forecast for us is heavy rains for the entire week with heavier than usual east and southeast winds during the rain bands due to the fact that we will be on the dirty side of the storm. Could be a hurricane when it hits land.
Rain and a little wind is a lot better than a direct hit - that’s for sure!
Have to agree, Mike. I can handle rain and a little wind.
On the bright side, I was just looking at the 10 day weather forecast for Houston. A week from today (the 14th) the forecast calls for a high of 74 and a low of 59, which sounds absolutely marvelous. Right now, the temperature is 89 with a heat index of 95. In other words, d___ hot and humid!
Same weather here - 90’s with high humidity with no forecast for cooler weather, unfortunately.
Trade you.
Just looked at my phone. Thunderstorms this evening, turning to a steady rain, then snow predicted by mid-morning tomorrow.

No trade. That's why I put up with the heat and humidity. You do not have to shovel humidity!

My sister, who lives in San Diego, gets all mushy when I tell her about the snow. She has a romantic notion of it, as well.
I could happily never experience snow again, and not feel like I missed anything in life. I have driven in it, walked the dog in it, and shoveled it enough times to last forever.
No the original post had it as 75 in a 40, I used 80 in a 40, you complaining that I used 80 instead of 75 is a bit picky considering I got the 40 right.

There was a project here quite a few years ago where a 2 lane road was modified to a 4 lane with center left turn lanes. They lowered the speed limit from 50 mph to 40 mph.
I told the project manager there was not enough sight distance and there may be an accident because of it. Well...a guy was speeding at, what they figured, around 75 mph, hit a car full of college kids who were making a left turn and killed one of them. Instead of attempting to fix the sight problem they lowered the speed limit to 35 mph.
There you go. the post that started it.

I bought a six pack of smoke detectors today to replace a few old ones and to add in bedrooms. They got a little pricey.
I had to replace all mine a couple years back. I think I have 7. of course, Lowes sold them in a contractor pack of 6 at a good price, but I had to but 1 extra at full price. The biggest hassle was having to swap out the base plate for all of them, and touch up the paint since the new ones were slightly smaller footprint. But, better to have them all going off at the same time, when one on the circuit failed!
they actually have an expiration date on them. Most people don't realize that (or probably, care, unless they start alerting).

Just as a for instance, if you were to grab a video from YouTube and wanted to just have the audio, no video, for use in your car, here’s the best way to do it.
First, download ffmpeg, and put the executable, ffmpeg.exe, somewhere in your path. Then, from a dos prompt, go to the directory where you downloaded the *.mp4 file (the video from youtube).
Breaking this down: 1) -i filename.mp4 Specifies the input file. If it contains blanks or special characters, enclose the file name in double quotes.
2) -vn Specifes to NOT copy any video streams (or pictures, for that matter)
3) -acodec copy This tells ffmpeg what encoder to use, and we’re specifying to just “copy”, do not reencode.
4) filename.m4a
This should be the last thing on the command line, and tells ffmpeg where to place the results. You can name the file anything you like, but you do want the file extension to be “.m4a”.
Nearly all music videos on youtube are in mp4 format, and contain an audio stream that is known as aac. You want to keep only that audio stream, and you do not want to reencode it. Reencoding always loses quality. And “aac” is a newer, better method of encoding / compressing audio. Nearly all new cars, cell phones, whatever, will support aac audio contained in a m4a file.
There is at least one website that will do the conversion for you.
Sounds like there is more people than me taking music off the internet.

I think I like how they are 10 year batteries now. When they expire they get thrown away.
In 10 years they will probably cost about $125 each.
My buddy who moved out to the boonies is staying with me for the weekend as his wife is having a girls weekend with old friends from school at their house. He wanted to see some of my old TV show DVD collection and ended up watching some of the old Quinn Martin series - the FBI, Cannon, and Streets of San Francisco. Whoever did product placement for the Ford Motor Company in those years sure earned their money.
The episode of The FBI we watched was from 1968, and the bad guy was driving a '68 Torino GT fastback, the FBI agents all had 390-equipped Ford Customs and Galaxies, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. drove a gold-on-gold '68 Mustang convertible through the streets of Washington DC during the closing credits.

Nope! There have been hurricanes in November as well!
Hate to change the topic...appliances are always a favorite. We took Gigi to the vet because of coughing.....seems it is an infection. She is 14 years old and the vet wants to pull out all her teeth. It does make sense, 14 years without brushing or dental work and a dogs teeth go very bad. Any idea how this works out - they claim the dog is fine and doesn't mind. It is expensive, about $1100 plus teeth cost from $25 to $150 each to remove, depending on how hard they are to remove. We will have her vet in Florida check it too, generally vet costs are about half the price in Florida.
Wow. Go away for a week and this forum has gone bananas with postings. Dental surgery is pretty hard on an older dog. You have to weigh that against how bad the teeth are. It took my dog 4 months to recover from the equivalent of doggie root canal. Now she has another broken tooth but it isn’t hampering eating, so we are just letting it be.
We’re starting to get some of those bands from Tropical Storm Michael here on the East Coast of Florida. Winds expected to gust to 45 mph with heavy downpours. Rain and wind tonight and all day tomorrow.
Since we are on the dirty side of this storm (east, southeast and northeast), as the storm moves north it will create large wind and rain bands all along the east coast. Expected to be a category 2 hurricane by tomorrow and tomorrow night. Not looking forward to this. I pulled down my hurricane shutters on my terrace a while ago.
At least we will be spared the worst of this storm unless it starts to track more toward the east.
Re: Snow. Take two skis, mix in a beautiful mountain and call me in the morning!
Sorry - snow, gravity and trees do not mix, to me. Ask Sonny Bono.
Likely, safer than driving!

There was a distracted driver-related fatality at an intersection near me last year, so the city reacted and made the intersection no right on red, along with changing the light sequence. Much of it is moot, as I see right on red at the intersection daily - literally zero enforcement. Still chasing that speed bogeyman and little else. I feel very protected.
I like normal blinking yellow turn arrows - my city moved to them at many intersections several years ago. They help with congestion. But a few had to be rolled back to normal sequencing, as the diverse and incompetent driving skill in the area couldn't figure it out, and there were several cases of "drivers" breezing through a blinking yellow turn arrow and striking the oncoming car which had right of way. Dumbing down a notch, that's how we roll.
That green-red-yellow thing sounds very non-intuitive, and I would love to see one of the "engineers" justify it, especially from an end user standpoint.
We have a few intersections where there are signs saying "no U-turn" or "no right on red" or some such. Usually the no rights are on those intersections with terrible visibility or those with multiple right turn lanes. For some reason, people forget that part in driver manual that traveling through an intersection on red is allowable only when not crossing a lane of travel and unless otherwise posted. In other words, left on red from a one-way street to another is okay, just as right on red is okay. However, right on red from the second of two right lanes (counting toward the left, or center, of the road) is not okay.
While they usually get away with such shenanigans (and, it is fairly rampant), sometimes the police monitor those locations to educate drivers on the correct use of these intersections.
We also have these odd left turn signals that were recently installed all over the area. For intersections with dedicated left signal ROW, they will turn green with the other lights red. Then, instead of turning flashing yellow, they go from solid yellow to red for about three seconds before going back to flashing yellow. In the meantime, the "go straight" lights turn to green when the arrows turn to red. It's really odd - the answer to a question nobody asked.
I treat them like I always have (e.g., yield on green), but it wouldn't surprise me if I was pulled over at some point for "running a red light" during that brief three-second interval when the light is that color.
Typical (over)reaction.

The speed was certainly excessive, but isn't the person who made the left turn at fault? As far as I know you can't impede someone's travel lane.
In this case the speed made the accident worse, but didn't cause it.
Depending on the circumstances it could very well be speed that caused the accident. All depends on the line of sight and speed of the car.
I could see a high IQ judge saying that if you couldn't see far enough away to complete the left turn safely, perhaps that left turn is unsafe, and you shouldn't have done it. Given that you crashed due to your left turn, I'd say you definitely shouldn't have made the left turn in that situation. I can't see many judges not seeing it this way. If you can't see far enough out, don't do it.
The truth is everyone making a left turn is probably going to say "I didn't see them" when something happens. You just can't accept that as credible evidence.
New Traffic Court technique called the Kavanaugh defense..... ask the judge the questions you are accused of.
Your honor, have you ever sped while driving?
Your honor, have you ever failed to make a complete stop making a right turn on a red light?
Somehow I have a feeling the Kavanaugh defense won't work as well for me in Traffic Court as it did for him at a Senate hearing.

You could make that case but let's presume that the speed limit is 40 MPH and the line of sight allows you to see traffic doing up to 60 MPH in enough time. Now let's say that the oncoming car is doing 80 and is just beyond your line of sight. Whose at fault?
Agreed, if an extra 20 MPH from oncoming traffic makes you crash, you are probably cutting it way too close making that left turn in the first place. Sort of like running in front of a train. Why cut it so close?
'18 Porsche Macan Turbo, '16 Audi TTS, Wife's '19 VW Tiguan SEL 4-Motion
Sorry but the original post that started this discussion stated that there was an accident where a car was going about 75 in a 40 so it is a case that is being discussed.

I saw some story the other day about new iphones not charging. Not sure if it's related.
Thanks. Looked at that. The issue is, the phone charges fine at home. Also, it charges fine when in the car’s wireless charging area. So, I think it’s something with Acura.
Acura dealership doesn’t want a survey stating they could not resolve a problem. So, they’re getting Acura engineering engaged (at least that’s what they told me yesterday).
GG, this issue with Acura Engineering getting involved reeks of Cadillacitis - perhaps an omen of things to come. But to be honest, I am looking forward to a “post-by-post” saga of yet another experience graphicguy will be involved in with yet another one of his cars.
Don’t forget to have them check out the front axle and steering rack while you’re at it - ya never know what gremlins are lurking just waiting to aggravate the situation. But rest assured, I’ll be here to provide you with any and all support you may need - just like before!
Talk like that will get you a visit from @graphicguy the next time he has business down your way and I ain't talking about chit chat over lunch.
Actually, Acura dealership had asked me to bring it by so they can look at the messages I’m getting. I didn’t have much time this a.m., but usually get coffee at the local Starbucks first thing on Mondays. They open at 7:00 a.m. Got my Starbucks and went to the Dealership Service Dept at exactly 7. Figured I’d show it to them and then get back to work, either in my car, or one of their loaners, quick and easy.
They checked me in and took my car into service. 20 minutes later, they said it was fixed. It was.
Apparently, the info sent over the lightning cables can or can’t be transmitted in a way that the Acura head unit can understand. I guess Acura has come up with cables that they know will work. They look just like a normal cable, but whatever it is they do to them, they work. Mine now wokrs fine.
No charge.
Having had lightning cables strewn all over my house and in my car, and knowing how some last awhile, and some last a few weeks, I asked what would happen if the cable gets frayed (which happens eventually the way I abuse them)? They said come on back and just get another one. I guess they have a pretty large supply.
Feeling happy about Acura! Fixed everything first time, no hassle, no excuses.

I felt old yesterday .... my son and I were in the basement while I was watching the Eagles stink. He was going through a cabinet where I have ton of old junk. He pulled out a cassette tape and asked what it was....
He is 5 in March. I was so into electronics even by his age I had a cassette player.
Made to feel old while watching that travesty of a game....ouch. I turned it off - I had to watch it on Sling and decided it wasn't worth chewing up my phone battery for anymore.

That reminded me of when my son and grandson were here in August. When it got overcast and it thundered and lightninged and poured, they ran outside and got soaking wet, laughing the whole time. Remember, they live in the Mojave Desert where it rains once every few years. I got a kick out of their frolicking in the downpours. Me? I stayed on the catwalk cheering them on.
Besides, the NFC east is so bad, 8-8 should take the division.
Agreed, like they said during the game it wasn't a must win for either team because the divisions are wide open. I'm still nervous, Eagles have a pretty tough schedule.
Item 2, the most likely cause that a particular USB stick won't work in your car, when it does work in your computer for copying the files, is the format. Probably NTFS, and your car wants FAT32.
Another potential issue is the size of the drive. Many cars have a 32GB read limit, and others have a 64GB limit.

I emailed the vet in Florida to get an estimate.........Total cost about $300. $8 a tooth for easy ones, $29 if difficult. What a difference! Poor Gigi has an appointment to have it done in Florida Oct 29th.

But, thanks for thinking of me! Lily seems to be doing just fine, other than not wanting to eat the soft food or the pain pills the doctor sent home with her.
Amazon is interesting - I do like getting products shipped right to my house, but I don't trust them in terms of returns, or even not selling counterfeit items.
How did you manage that?

Thanks for getting back to me and I figured it would be something like that. I don't want to go through back and forth's. Call me a quitter or a stubborn old coot. Besides, I think the guys in here like the new @jmonroe1 better, so I have that to consider too.
Thanks again for getting back to me.

Truthfully it wasn't much work on my end - Flyer had to do some gymnastics behind the scenes, but once he did - presto my login brought me back to murphydog.
I simply had to give him a few days to get things done.
I've been thinking about this and I'm almost willing to give it a try but I don't have the help address although it was given several times. Then again, it might have changed since all those postings way back when a lot of us had our problems. So, if someone can provide me the latest working address I'm game.
WARNING: If Edmunds screws this up and I'm bumped up to jmonroe2, 3, 4, or higher, I'm gonna be pissed. :@ :@

Long-term tooth health is all about the food. We gave ours Orijen. She was a large breed, nearly fifteen when we decided to pull the plug, and she had all her teeth (in reasonably good condition, too!).
I'm not a big fan of spending lots of money on animals (all at once), so if she had come to the point of needing something like taking all her teeth out, that would have been day last for her. So, I put that money, over time, into the food, and teeth were never an issue.
The funny thing there is that the food started because of a skin issue she was having at about nine years old. My wife did a bunch of research on the subject and decided to try this food. I balked, of course, being the cheapskate I am, but went ahead and bought a bag. INSTANT difference. Before that bag was gone (about four weeks), so was the skin issue, plus her coat looked like she was three years old again, energy up, you name it. The darn dog lived another five years once I started shelling out $75/month in food. Hahahah.
She was a good pup, though. I was glad to have her around, and glad to let her go when the time came.

Apparently, the teeth on larger dogs holds up better than smaller dogs. Gigi has been pretty healthy, but she has had 3 bouts of pancreatitis so she is on a diet of Hills Science low fat chicken which you can only get at the vets. When we got her I said the max I was going to spend on her was $2500 total......we probably surpassed that by 5 or 6X. But, I won't do the extraordinary stuff like something that costs $10000 to get a few more years out of her....that almost never works. Have to be realistic too.
Remember when we were kids, never took the dog to a vet and when they got sick they just quietly went. things have changed. Also, dogs got table scraps, no special formula dog foods.

Huh. Lily was sent home with that exact same food. Just bought a 17 pound bag of it today. Fortunately, one of my other dachshunds will be able to eat it, too.
Lily was also just diagnosed with pancreatitis.
Our family didn't have dogs when I was a kid.
Cats, mostly, then my dad went through a phase where he raised song birds - cockatiels, mostly. We had one - Henry - as a pet. The rest lived in an aviary he built in the back yard.
To bring this around to cars, a couple of friends he met while raising birds had interesting cars - one was a late 70's Fiesta (orange - weren't they all?) and the other a '79 or '80 Celica hatchback, in yellow. I really wanted that one.

OOPS, @fintail beat me to this logic.

OK, Cotey's dead, I could try putting toothpaste on a fresh toothbrush today and try brushing Meggy May the Chow Chow's teeth. I'll let you all know just how that goes.

Remember, the quote I got for taking out Gigi's teeth from our vet here would be $2000 to $2500, and could be higher.....$25 a tooth for easy ones, $134 a tooth for difficult ones (42 teeth).
I emailed the vet in Florida to get an estimate.........Total cost about $300. $8 a tooth for easy ones, $29 if difficult. What a difference! Poor Gigi has an appointment to have it done in Florida Oct 29th.
