Aba - the Avalon and new Camry are both kind of low to the ground with tight headroom for 6 footers, so you will need to try it on.
I always try things on before I buy them!
At dinner enjoying Chicken Parmigiana, ziti, and lots of cognac! The Chianti was quite good, too!
Happy birthday Mike but you better be careful about the feasting or you might only fit in a 747 wide body. Ah the hell with it, have another piece of Chicken Parm, for me, and Chianti too.

I do like the new Nissan Kicks, their new SUV. The problem with me and that SUV is simple, though, as far as actually buying one. They don't make them with a manual transmission!
I am now considering a 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo 6-speed in Super Black, and, a 2017 Nissan Sentra NISMO 6-speed in Brilliant Silver. The difference in price is little - the NISMO is only $17,995 and it has only 6,800 miles on it. It's only 90 miles south of me. NO-BRAINER!
The Super Black Sentra SR Turbo 6-speed is selling for $15,411 and it's all the way in Chandler, AZ, a suburb of Phoenix. That car has 12,800 miles on it.
Both of these cars are in the running. And I do like abacomike's method: drive there, get your car and call your Mrs. from the table once the deal is done! I do think that would work in our situation.
And, let's say you were following the Porshe; I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I still like it. But, more importantly, you don't see the rearend from that wonderful driver's seat!
You know how some people have a large mirror over their bed? Well, I would have a huge mirror at the back of the garage so I could see it as I backed in. Jmonroe probably has one over his dining room table.

So do I. I like the fact it's a hatchback, so besides being fast, it's also quite practical. If I had $100K+ to throw around and some good leftover to pay the outrageous maintenance bills, I would get it.
Thanks for all those happy birthday wishes - much appreciated!
One more....why not go out and lease a new car to celebrate...so we can have an actual new car story?
No way, driver. I have my “A” service scheduled 3 weeks from now - this car is a keeper for 2 more years.
Must be a record for you Mike....what was the last car you had for that long?
Honestly, I can’t remember - wait, the CLS400 had it’s A Service a month before I bought the 740i. So on December 10th, this will be the first car I kept for over 13 months since my 1998 Lexus ES300 which I had for 18 months.
BTW, one of the books I'm reading at the moment is one about the 1964 Indy 500 and the Dave MacDonald - Eddie Sachs crash. Pretty good read. Lots of stuff about the engineering side and changes in rules, tire development, all that dry stuff that makes the race interesting to me
And it's kinda scary reading about the risks they took then, knowing what we know now
Geeze and here I am reading Moby Dick.
Heh... I'm actually using an audiobook of Moby Dick as my background noise today.:)
@driver100 ....you and I agree, usually. But, I will differ with you on the Panamera. I like it. Then again, no one here will say I have the pulse of most when it comes to automotive styles.
Mike....glad to hear you had a wonderful birthday. I know you’re in your lease for a little while longer, but I like the Avalon in the Burgundy and Dark Grey. Plus, the trade rags seem to like it for the most part, as best I can tell....

How can a low cholesterol level be bad for you? I just got my lab results. LDL is 44.4 and my HDL 38.0, total cholestesterol of 98 and total glycerides of 78. The nurse called to discuss the low HDL which dropped from 43 to 38 from June 2017.
The power of Costco... Two days after my phone call, LG called me to announce they're cutting me a full refund for the dead dishwasher. No replacement, full refund. I will take it even better, so I can buy something else. Since installation is included in Costco's prices, I will be whole minus of course the aggravation, but that's just life. You can't beat Costco's service. It's basically $100B corporation telling LG, if I'm unhappy, they're unhappy, so LG needs just two days to come to the right conclusion.
So I'm now in market for a new one. I know where I'll buy, of course You can't beat the service, even if the selection is fifth of that in major appliance stores. I know what I will NOT buy.

I don't think so. If LDL dropped below 40 you might want to pick up your ears a bit but low LDL risks are highly debatable anyway.

No the question what to buy. If I go Costco, the choices are only Whirlpool (about 6 models), GE (3), Samsung (4), LG (no) and one Maytag. GE had some clever features and Whirlpool has several price points. CR say Samsung now fell below LG in reliability, so it's out. They seem to like Whirlpool as best value, but I also like some of the clever features on the GE (special bottle/tall glass cleaning nozzles). CR likes Bosch very much, but it's not available at Costco. It really is between Whirlpool and GE, both mid/high end models (steel tub, some clever features, third rack preferred, black stainless preferred).
All of them have complaints from people about breaking and waiting for repair, so I was not alone there. I usually don't read people screaming it's junk without details. I also think everything can break. I was kind of due, as all my appliances were working for over 10 years without fail. There were several reports of people waiting on LG, like me, so it certainly is a pattern.
I'm sure, whatever I choose, it will have some risk of repeat of the problems. But perhaps I'll be in the large majority of people who will enjoy it for number of years. How unlucky can one get? I think dishwashers are generally higher risk items. Moving parts, generally lower durability then in the past (as a price for increased number of features and energy efficiency).

Like cars, appliances do fail. I recall years back the counter guy at the downtown appliance parts store said the ones with electronic readouts were the ones failing. I had gone in to pick a part for washer or dryer and had commented about now wanting to replace it because of electronics. The counters guys also serve on the phone bank in the bank room taking calls from retail folks wanting to buy parts, and they give advice when you say I need a thigamabob, they may say have you checked the whatzit first?
Whirlpool (Maytag) Cabrio like middle line washer had computer fail at 9 months on my son's washer. Serviceman said usually replacement parts last forever. This new computer board has lasted.
I'm thinking I should join Costco, which has only 1 store in the Metro, across town, just to buy appliances. I can't beat service that makes you say "Wow."
Wasn't CR recommending LG and Samsung a few years back as great? I rarely browse CR at the library anymore, so I don't know.

I think they used to recommend Samsung appliances, now they wrote the brand fell even below LG , at least in general. This is all conditional. I think dryers, refrigerators and stoves are probably most reliable in their basic functions (non-essential functions, aka bells and whistles might fail more often), which means their brand won't matter as much, while washing machines and dishwashers are probably least reliable, which one should expect. You mix water, electricity and heat and more items could give away. It may also be function of usage. Washers may be more reliable in terms of failure per operation hour, but if they are run more frequently, the perceived reliability may be lower (frequency of breakdowns in an absolute time frame, not operation time frame).
The most important factor to me seems to be replacement part availability, both in-warranty and out of warranty. LG failed miserably, others will see. As you said, things break, what matters, is the response.
So, LG sent me an email with attachments: letter to sign and they want me to remove the ID label from the dishwasher and put it on that letter. Then it's on me to dispose of it, but that's fine with me - it will be part of the delivery of the new one. They also included a Fedex shipping label for the letter.

That's am interesting way to decommission the unit. Technically you could sell or give it someone who could replace part themselves and use it. I wonder if independent service men eould work on it?
Probably, but it would have to be "grey market". Taking the label out also prevents from identifying the model, unless one can somehow do it through other means. Considering how unavailable that controller unit was, I doubt anybody had use for it, except scavenging it for parts, or recovering sheetmetal for steel scrap. So a well-organized salvage place could probably find a way to utilize it, but I don't think it would be useful to any end user.
If Costco doesn’t sell Bosch, I’d go with one of the GEs. Maytag-Jenn-Aire also has slow parts availability problems.
The statistics say Whirlpool dishwashers have least repairs for last 20 years (so they say). CR likes their low-end units as a great value play. I think the basics should extend to their mid/high end units, which are just about looking prettier and having some nicer racks. The only question is electronics, again. High end models will have different modules than low-end, as they have more functions. It may be programmable SoC (same chip, different programming), or it's a unique circuit, I don't know. I don't think I should be so unlucky to get a second bad one.

I also think dishwashers are not that reliable and it has to be due to all the gizmos and touch panel buttons on all the units for the last 15 years or so. My experience with dishwashers is that they are the least reliable appliances in our house and they are the only appliance that I buy an extended warranty for. It bugs the hell out of me to do that but it has proven to be a necessary evil for dishwashers.
FWIW, we have a Samsung that needed two main motor/pump units installed within a month when it was about 3 years old. Got it in 2011 after the Kenmore died 3 months out of warranty. Sears gave us 100% of the cost of it towards the Samsung we now have. The Sears appliance dept. manager did it because we bought all of our kitchen appliances in 2010 from them when we upgraded the kitchen. I doubt they would have done that with just the dishwasher purchase but I'm happy they did it just the same. In keeping with my long standing policy, I'm not going to comment on appliances that are still working in our home.
Another FWIW, my AC compressor cooling fan motor that quit over the weekend and ordered from Amazon on Monday with an expected standard delivery range of this Friday to next Wednesday was delivered by UPS yesterday at 3:30 PM. Coincidently I was checking the delivery status when the door bell rang, still can't believe the lightning quick delivery I got. Glad I didn't pay 80 something bucks for 2 day delivery on that. I installed it in about 40 minutes after it was delivered. The AC is back to normal now but so is the October weather today and for the foreseeable future. I don't expect to get very much use out of the AC anymore this year here in the Burgh but it would have been nice to give that new motor a real workout. Oh well, at least I'm set for next summer anyway.
Hey wait a minute jmonroe, that sounds like you're going against your long standing policy of talking about appliances that are still working. OK, just forget that last comment.

The dishwasher in my house has a leaking seal. That was true when I bought the house back in 2011, and I have never fixed it. Just relegated the dishwasher to storage duty for pots and pans. I live alone, I cook very little, no problem washing the few dirty dishes by hand.
Living by myself, the dishwasher usually gets run once a week and I do two loads of laundry a week. Being single has its rewards...
I am in the opposite situation as @jmonroe1 right now. A pair of shoes I ordered online was out for delivery yesterday morning. The tracker said they were delivered at 2:35PM. They weren't. Still no sign of them. I am getting concerned.

I'm very hesitant to use online shopping but sometimes it seems to be unavoidable. Like with the AC condenser cooling fan motor, which I could not buy locally, I had to go online. Now, clothes and shoes for sure, I could never buy online because I have to feel the item and try them on first before I buy.
Mrs. j has been doing water aerobics for years now and a lot of the women in her class buy their swim suits online because they say it is much cheaper but she can't bring herself to do that because she also likes to test fit in the local stores. Thinking she could save us some money, I suggested that she give it a try since her classmates have been very satisfied. Her response was, "you go first".

Good luck trying to find a reliable dishwasher. If I could help I would but I can't.

I am in the opposite situation as @jmonroe1 right now. A pair of shoes I ordered online was out for delivery yesterday morning. The tracker said they were delivered at 2:35PM. They weren't. Still no sign of them. I am getting concerned.

Mrs. j has been doing water aerobics for years now and a lot of the women in her class buy their swim suits online because they say it is much cheaper but she can't bring herself to do that because she also likes to test fit in the local stores. Thinking she could save us some money, I suggested that she give it a try since her classmates have been very satisfied. Her response was, "you go first".
