There's 2 features the RDX is missing that I want, AA and inductive charging ability. The issue with AA was supposedly going to be resolved by 2020 yet here we are 4 months in and I'm not aware of any updates.

I prefer the navigation system in my M235i to CarPlay; I get notifications of new texts and since I can use Siri Eyes Free I'm able to have texts read to me as well as dictate responses- and there's no need to plug in my phone.
Since BMW has seen the light and now offers CarPlay for free, I may download it if I get a newer BMW since it connects wirelessly- but when I was working at BMW I found that maybe 90% of the people who worship at the Temple of Saint Jobs of Apple preferred the OEM navigation and iDrive to CarPlay.

Having to fight a ticket by a speed camera I was a victim of last year, their accuracy is indeed dubious, at best. What I did find out, at least around here, they don’t quite have the additional man power to show up for all those who allegedly were speeding and decided to have their day in court (like me).

Mine was the first encounter and probably the last in the area the municipality says I was speeding. They used a panel van on the side of the road with the camera operating in it.

I have not seen that panel van, again....anywhere in the same city where I allegedly sped.

They gave me a choice. Pay $200 with no points on my record, or go to court. Clearly, it was a money grab. But, I guess most who were cited decided to fight it, as I got a call from the police dept stating they were dropping the charges. When I asked why, they said there were too many who were willing to go to court and they could not tie up officers and/or prosecutors to handle the amount of cases.

    The good guys won.

As I've noted previously. speed cameras and red light cameras are first and foremost a money grab. I'ts not worth it to the state to take cases to court- and almost certainly losing them- even in the People's Republic of Ohio.

A funny example of the Law of Unintended Consequences: The draconian speed enforcement tactics of the Ohio Highway Patrol encouraged a couple of Engineering majors at the University of Cincinnati to develop the original Escort radar detector. Back in 2012 my son rode with Mike Valentine in his 911 GT3 RS 4.0 at Mid Ohio. My son asked Mike what led him to start designing radar detectors. Mike said, "I like fast cars, and I like to drive them fast."
I'm trading my V1 in on a new 2nd generation V! when the pandemic hysteria finally calms down; I'll especially need it if I buy that orange GTS.
My Valentine 1, unfortunately, got thrown out in my office purge and clean up. Mrs. venture saves a lot of junk. She doesn't save my stuff.

Interesting. I guess it just goes where the old radio used to be, assuming it'll fit there? I wonder how much installation would cost. Seems like it might be be aesthetically and functionally challenging on the inside of the car, but who knows. Anyway, I'd rather have built-in from the factory myself.

Here in Broward County, we are now "required" to wear a face mask when going out in public. Face masks are also required for all business employees, managers, etc., who come into contact with customers or other people.

When I went grocery shopping Thursday, none of the employees in Publix were wearing masks. Now they are required.

I wonder why this was not implemented weeks ago. I have an appointment at the eye doctor Monday morning and I know they were wearing masks weeks ago when I was last there.

And if you can’t find any masks because the horders are all sitting on them, what then? Stay home until you starve? Seems heavy handed unless the government is making them available.
You can make an easy one with rubber bands for the ears, or just use a bandana. What counts as a mask is pretty loose these days. We wear them for the rare grocery or prescription pickup, but not out walking. I figure the quicker we all comply, the shorter this will have to last.

I’d still ask for the original deal. I can’t imagine that they aren’t desperate to sell those cars. Seems foolish on Acura’s part to cut incentives when their inventory is growing weeds.
The email I got back from the sales manager wasn't very encouraging. He said Acura wasnt going to increase incentives, the high incentives were to move inventory and help consumers during the corona crisis, and they would be getting the new TLX's in "soon". Made no effort to try to sell me the car. Basically here's the price, take it or leave it. So, still on the fence with this one.

After doing a little research, I think I will take a look at the Honda Accord. It's base model is very well loaded, and more importantly it's interior is suppose to be as high quality as their higher trim levels (minus the leather). I do like the exterior styling as well. Hopefully it's cloth seats won't be as cheesy looking as some I've looked at. Hard to tell by just looking at a video. It does have the 1.5 liter turbo and CVT..Scotty says "booooo" on both. But, what does Scotty know?. ;-)
do you want any of the features of the TLX that a lower level Accord won't have? Stuff like a good stereo, power passenger seat, moonroof, heated seats, LED lights (just a few things off the top of my head)? They are still nice cars, but IMO that the LX (which admittedly has had some content added to it including Honda sensing) is a bit cheaped out. The sweet spot to me is the EX, if you don't require leather, or EX-L if you do.
Want? Sure. Need? Not really. Would prefer not to have a moonroof. Heated seats and better stereo would be nice. The leather interior of the TLX was excellent. Ride, comfort, reliability, good power (doesn't need to be great) and nice interior are tops in my book. No touchscreen on the base Accord, which I would like. If I went up to the Ex or ExL price point, I'd probably just stay with the Acura.
The Accord Sport 1.5 has the upgraded infotainment with apple car play and android auto. No sunroof, better interior with power driver seat.
Only black interiors on all sport models. Though on the plus side, I'd be irresistible to women.
It sounds like the Acura dealer (the lady with the nice nails) didn't tell you the special offer was expiring. That seems like poor customer care to me. And, I don't believe their story completely......selling cars is going to be even more difficult in a few weeks, they may come out with a better deal somewhere else. It seems to me that dealer did absolutely nothing for you Jip.
Dealers do not get any advance notice of program changes. They were probably as surprised (and disappointed) as us customers are about the decrease in the incentive amounts.

Remember, the plants are shut down, so no new inventory is coming. Dealers want to sell cars, for sure, but they also want to maximize profit on each unit sold (or leased).
Good point....but, usually special sales have an expiration date. They could have told Jip to get his buns in there by midnight! ;)

if you look at how much computer equipment they carry now you can see why they need space. And gear in the back. An SUV is easier to get at stuff quickly instead of fishing around the back of the trunk. I suspect that sitting higher for better visibility is also a big thing these days.

at least around here even the marked cars are blending in because they are making the graphics much less noticeable (a lot of "ghost" cars), and the light bars, etc. are much lower profile. So they look like any other Explorer or Tahoe. Which is why I make sure to watch the speed whenever I see one of those beasts.

my BIL and his wife recently got a new black Explorer (the prior style) (they live in NY) and she did say that people move over for her when they notice her coming up behind them!

They move over for my Mustang too. I think it’s called ‘Ford Respect’. :DB)

About these Ohio Highway Patrol car chases - I'd like to know what kind of penalties were given when these cases went to court. Seems to me the list of violations would be endless. Impossible that any of them would be dismissed with a slap on the wrist.

@jipster : I test drove the current Accord before getting my TLX, and I felt the Accord was a lesser car in almost every way. And I was/am a big Accord fan, having owned 4 Accords before the TLX. The only advantage the Accord had that I can recall was more legroom for backseat passengers. Even though Acura's incentives on the TLX are slightly lower than they were a few days ago, they are still good enough that they can put you into a TLX for a very good price on a lease. At the end of the 3-year lease there's the residual price, which on a base model TLX will be something like $17k. At that point, as you know, you can either turn in the car or buy it out for that price.

I think a base TLX is still price competitive with a comparably equipped Sonata, Accord, or Camry. But there's no way a TLX can compete on price with a used Altima. If you really want to save money above all else, that may be the way to go.

AndroidAuto/AppleCarPlay have important features and functionality, and my guess is that it'll be a good idea to get those features on your next car unless you are dead set against it. AA/CarPlay provides you with great navigation—maps and turn by turn directions as you are driving—to anywhere you are going. Once it's set up you just plug in your phone each time you get in your car. In my humble opinion it would be a good idea to get it on your next car whatever brand you are buying.

I'm almost positive that Mrs. j's 2018 Legacy has that Android and Carplay thingies but I haven't tried to set it up yet. Have only had the car one year now. Maybe when this virus thing settles down I'll have time to look into it. Sounds like something very important to augment the built in Nav system.

Well, I finally sold my 1999 Rav4 without really trying and it cost me dearly. Here is the economics of the deal.

    Original invoice price…$2,500
    Freight and insurance….$2,450
    Total CIF………………$4,950
    Import duty @ 133% …$6,574
    Total final cost ……$11,424

I sold the vehicle for $5,000, resulting in a ($6,424) loss. Sounds like a bad deal, true, but the appraised value was $6,625, so in my mind my economic loss was only $1,625, the difference being depreciation.

Some here may remember I imported the used right-hand-drive RAV4 directly from Japan to the Caribbean in 2014 for $11,424 with 98,000 km on the odometer and sold it 5 years later in 2020 with 136,862 km on the clock for $5,000. I found the car held up well considering the poor condition of some the narrow roads on the Caribbean.

As an aside, as of February 2020 Toyota has sold 10 million Rav4s since its introduction in 1994, not bad for the ugliest SUV on the market.

Why the huge tariff. Do they have a domestic car industry they are trying to protect?

I made a mask from a cloth napkin and rubber bands. It's objectively crap, but I suppose it's the thought that counts, and maybe something is better than nothing. I might go to Costco next week to get a few things for my mom who lives at the end of the supply chain, seriously thinking about wearing my balaclava/hockey helmet combo.

Birthdays continue in the age of social distancing and stay home orders. Today it is my brother in law's day, and they aren't able to have a big party, so someone visited overnight and pranked the lawn, even using a little TP (still like gold, gotta use it wisely). This will be a time to remember, for better or worse:

JM, a 2018 limited will have carplay. Just need to push the right button (probably under apps),

I have not found a factory NAV that was as good in terms of maps, updates, real time routing, all that good stuff. Plus easier to pre-plan on google then get in the car and go. at least the map in the RDX looks modern. The TLX looks like it came out of a 1995 Tom Tom unit. The Hyundai (2015 Sonata) was not bad looking, but again a pain to program an address, and did not have real time traffic. And needed physical map updates. Better than nothing though, since that was the year before Car play came along.

though I did at one point get an email that I could download Carplay if I wanted it (did not have to go to dealer, could DIY it over the air). had less than a year left on the lease so never bothered.

    The 147-mph Hyundai Sonata.

Way back in 2007 a Sonata was clocked doing 147.

"At 5:47 a.m. on Sunday, May 21, [2007] the freeway — the Loop 101 — was empty, so empty that before he knew it his rental, a 2006 Hyundai Sonata V-6, was going 128 mph. Eight minutes later he was clocked at 147 mph, which works out to 82 mph over the limit. He didn't know it, but speed cameras had taken pictures of him as he blew by.

But wait just a minute. Is a Sonata even capable of going 147 mph?
That was the question an Arizona newspaper put to Car and Driver soon after the story broke. If a Sonata could not go 147, then the speed-monitoring equipment was suspect, and so were all the citations."

In this insane market, it is one of the last areas of "affordable" housing, where you can sometimes find a livable detached (older, smallish) SFH in a decent enough school district for 350K. Drawback is a 90-120 minute commute from many employment centers, so what you don't pay for in a mortgage you pay with your sanity.

@jipster : There is an additional way in which the Accord might be better for you than a TLX—the touchscreen system that it has for AndroidAuto/CarPlay. The two screens that you saw in the TLX have been criticized by some. I actually like that set up in the TLX slightly better than the single touch screen in the Accord. But since you're new to AndroidAuto/CarPlay I think the touch screen in the Accord is going to be easier and more intuitive to learn. And the Accord is a nice car. If I hadn't driven the TLX I probably would have gotten that car instead.

But the base Accord doesn't have AA/Carplay. You need to move up to the Sport or EX for that.

You might also try the Civic. For the Civic you'll also need to go to the Sport or EX to get AA/Carplay, but you should be able to save c.$3000 compared to an Accord by getting the Civic. Plus the mpg on the Civic is as good as a hybrid on the highway.

I liked the Camry too when I went on a test drive in it c. 20 months ago, but it wasn't as nice to me as the Accord or the Civic. But Toyotas in general seem to last a very long time.

I do come back to the thought that you and your wife seemed to really like the TLX. You got a wow factor from it that I'm guessing you aren't going to get from another car in your price range. Imho you should shop all the other cars first before going to drive the TLX again. By the time you get back to the Acura dealer, if you haven't bought something else already, you might be ready to try to lease a base TLX or the Tech from them. Lease is still the way to go on the TLX is terms of saving $.

Probably no affluenza from someone running from the cops in an old Grand Marquis in Ohio. I doubt they are in the top few %.

Affluenza was most successful in a TX court, where a guillotine-worthy devilspawn and similarly deplorable parents had the defense used to excuse the kid from accountability after killing 4 people due to his poor driving decisions:

It appears to run in the family - all of them along with the judges in their legal history should be keel-hauled

No doubt if he was a kid from the wrong side of the tracks, especially if from specific backgrounds, he'd have been given the chair.

Since someone brought up police pursuits, I've watched a couple of OSHP video's.
They have been about a 1/2 hour long.
It was pretty local to some of you, even I recognize some of the signs from travelling down that way.
Amazing how long this GM keeps going.

Great post! I didn't know that existed.

I listened to radio updates as that chase occurred. I thought the chase ended in Covington when the car hit the barrier wall. It was in Cincy next to the football stadium.

Amazing how many lives in other cars that GM almost hit. What did the passenger keep doing with his arm out the window? Was he throwing out stuff?
Probably drugs or since they were murder suspects, the gun.
Here's the results so far. The suspected homicide that led to their fleeing, has not been finalized>

I agree about Google Maps always being updated so the built in Nav is always going to be lagging (probably from the day the car rolled off the assembly line) but I always liked the big Nav screen compared to the puny screen of the phone. But what I disliked the most with the phone was how to hold it so I could see it. None of the contraptions I saw were as good as the BIG built in Nav job.

FWIW, I just looked at the Subie manual for how to set up Android and it seems almost sailor proof. Being an old sailor I might be able to get it going but that's what it looks like from the comfort of my family room. Once I decide to get up and go to the garage things could change. If worse comes to worse I'll either have to kick something or live with what I've been using. :@

JM, that is the nice thing about CarPlay (or android auto). when running maps, it is the full screen. Just like the built in navi. Your phone stays safely tucked away in the console. never have to look at it!

For Jip, I suspect the Civic is not going to pass the test. Probably would enjoy something a bit larger, and it does not have the fanciest interior, nor is it particularly quiet or comfortable on the highway. Excellent MPG though!

I still think that the right configuration of Camry is going to win. Seems like a good fit.

Costco today: $1.40 RUG; $1.80 PUG. No TP, sanitizing wipes or Lysol spray. Lots of masks being worn. Medium crowd for a Saturday. Costoc employee at the gas station was consistently wiping down the pumps.

not sure why my area is not seeing the big price drop. Lowest I saw yesterday along the discount row was about $1.97. Though at the pace I am using gas, probably won't even need to get it until May. So I an wait it out.

I have not seen wipes in many weeks, but TP is no problem usually. Especially if you don't mind 1 ply!

Still well TP'd, I did give a 6 pack to my son for him and hiis roomate. Also, good on sanitizing wipes, just about out of Lysol. But, spending much time at GFs condo, tomorrow is a Skype Easter dinner with her family, I've invited my son, but as usual, and after discussing respect/communication, still no response.

Didn't you ever get an email from Subaru about updating the maps for your navigation? You can do it yourself. No cost. Updating the maps is good for, I think, 3 years.

I almost always use the built-in navigation rather than Waze or something else. It should have the traffic thingy from XM for 3 years also.

No need to push any buttons or do it on your computer and send it to the car either. Just push the voice button when you get in the car and tell it the address.

When I went grocery shopping Thursday, none of the employees in Publix were wearing masks. Now they are required.
I wonder why this was not implemented weeks ago. I have an appointment at the eye doctor Monday morning and I know they were wearing masks weeks ago when I was last there.

Part of the problem was there weren't enough masks even for hospital staff....so they downplayed the importance of masks. Now that they are finding them and people are making them, they can tell people they should be used as much as possible......especially for people working or being in public.
I wouldn't be surprised if we will be required to wear masks if this dies down but is still around. I find it hard to even imagine wearing a mask.....I'll feel like I am in a bad sci-fi movie.

The Accord sport has very minimal sidewall though and I suspect a stiffer ride, so definitely want to try that out. And I have driven a few Honda CVTs and did not find them objectionable. I think they are one of the better done ones (along with Subaru). The Sport 1.5 is pretty much stripped but the 2.0t is loaded up for some reason.

And as noted, dealers find out the new incentives the same time we do, so they are not hiding anything.

I was thinking too that yes, they want to move inventory but on the flip side, since factories are closed, if dealers get the OK to reopen (and people can start leaving their houses) there could be a little flurry of pent up demand buying, and dealers won't be getting any fresh stock in for a while. So maybe they figure they can sell some during the lockdown, but overall will be better off sitting on the stock waiting to the market to open back up.

Mike, for masks, you can use just about anything. old T shirt, a Bandanna, whatever. I have seen some pretty funky ones. And a whole cottage industry sprung up (big on Etsy) with people making them at home. So unless you have a few doctor styles (the lightweight ones like a dentist wears) you can easily find of make a DIY one.

I couldn't stand the smell if I used an old T-shirt! 😜🤪 I prefer the masks my doctor's office gave me.

The voice recognition in the Clubman is hit or miss- I mostly use it to tune to radio stations. The system in the 2 Series is amazing; I can say the name of a restaurant or other point of interest and 99% of the time it pops up on the screen with the phone number, address, and Google rating.

It nice to know I'm not the only one that doesn't talk to his car. I think I told the story but if not it's on subject. This happened at least a year ago while I was driving the Genny mid morning going to Lowe's:

I don't usually take this stretch of this 35 MPH 4 lane road (2 lanes in each direction) but since I got the straight through green light vs. getting in the backed up lane for the left green arrow turn lane I changed my plans. I stayed in the left lane going through the light and as I'm about to get in the right lane to avoid cars making left turns from the left lane which backs up traffic (this is why I try to avoid this stretch of this road), as I get through the light I see a car in the right lane with it's turn signal on to make a right turn. I now decide to stay in the left lane until this car makes its right turn. OK, now I can move over into the right lane and just as I figured, a car about 5 cars in front of me in the left is going to make a left turn, so I was moving over at just the right time, huh? WRONG. Just as I start to move into the right lane the nitwit in front of me jerks his car into the right lane. I allow for drivers like this and I was in no danger of hitting him but I decided to blow my horn. I rarely use my horn but this guy deserved a blast. I guess I unknowingly bumped the talk button on the left spoke of the steering wheel while reaching for the horn button as I said, "YOU DUMB SOB" and then I had this conversation with my Genny:

    Genny: Please repeat last command.

Me (not realizing right away what I did): What?

    Genny: Please repeat last command.

Me (now realizing what I did and trying to have some fun): I was talking to the dummy in front of me.

    Genny: Please repeat last command.

    Me: I guess you're a dummy too.

    Genny: Please repeat last command.

That was enough for me so I turned off the voice command. Now do you guys know why I don't talk to my cars?

My future son-in-law got his brand new 2020 Camaro about 3 weeks ago replacing his 2012 model. They both love it though I always get the front seat if I go in it as I can't get into the back easily at all. Also, it's a bit claustrophobic back there for me and luckily, my daughter is cognizant of this and insists I sit in front. We got great kids, and they always look out to put us first now!! Think once I got real sick and as near death back in 2018, they finally got it that we're getting older and things like that could happen. Guess they grew up a bit and even my son flew in without being asked once he heard how sick I did get!
