Found out this morning from my doctor that I have Shingles. The pain is murder. He is ordering some anti-viral medication for me but he said this could last for weeks. Just what I needed - something else to add to my already long list of ailments. 😩😫😤😒
OMG...sorry to hear this Mike. You didn't need this, hope it is a milder version. I was surprised one of the ads on TV said 1 adult in 3 gets shingles sometime in their life. Checked it out and it is true. Hope you are on the mend soon.
And this is a good time to remind anyone who hasn't gotten the newer two shot shingles vaccination which is better than the earlier version to get their shot. One shot. Then wait at least 60 days IIRC to take the second shot. The second shot had more of a reaction next day. Shingrix. Age 50 and over. I got mine at Kroger one of the first as soon as it was available. No charge for my particular Medicare insurance plan with Aetna.
Years back my doctor kept telling me the stories of the Catholic nursing rest home where she had worked and how much of a threat shingles can be especially on the face and near eyes and optic nerves. After a year I got the first vaccine. Then later I got the newer Shingrex 2 shot series.
I couldn’t get the first shingles vaccine because it’s a live virus vaccine. The two-shot Shingrix is not, so it’s safe for nearly everyone. I got both shots last year. I seem to remember it was kinda expensive though.
I believe we paid $200 to $240 for the newer shot....and it would have been about the same in the US. Expensive, but, well worth it if you have heard from someone who has had shingles....especially in the eye area.
If I ever had need of a golf cart, and I can't imagine why, I'd just go with one of these. 25hp, 4wd, dump bed, and a winch. Why mess around with mere toys? ;b
Pretty cool. We need four seats and speed limit is 5 MpH!
My son used to live in a complex where the speed limit was 17 MPH. There were signs all along the roads.
I once came upon a SL sign that read 2.5 MPH at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie many years ago. It has long since been removed.
In our Florida complex the speed limit is 14 mph. They thought that would stand out more than 15 mph.
Oddly enough I asked my doctor about the vaccine a few years ago and she discouraged me from getting it, so I didn't. Not sure why but she didn't seem to think highly of it.
Probably because the first one wasn't very protective...better than nothing but only a low percentage of people were protected. The newer one has a much higher protection rate...but, that 2nd shot really knocks you out.

Got to be better than this constant burning pain. Going in to the doctor again this morning - he wants to take a biopsy of the rash and have the lab deal with it through testing and identification. That isn't going to be fun.

On the bright side, an excuse to drive the new car!
Funny you should ask that. Got a call from the prospective buyer last night. She said she had the cashier’s check and is coming to drop off the check and get the car today. We’re doing it at my bank.
I’m generally a trusting person. But, I want my bank to verify the Cashier’s Check, even though they’re supposed to be as good as cash.
Should have this wrapped up by this afternoon if something doesn’t go sideways.

I want to say I recall a complex that posted a speed limit of 14 (or was it 14 1/2?) mph.

I had shingles once so I can sympathize. I pray it doesn’t last too long. Our doctor advised my wife and I to get the shingles shot since our insurance covers it but we have yet to do it.

Cashiers checks are easy to fake. But the bank can verify it as good if you go there. The problem is when you trust it and just deposit it, and don’t find out until later on when it won’t clear.
Seems unlikely in this case, given you know who she is and where she works. And if you want to pass a fake, the time to do it is when bank is closed. Though around here, only the drive through is ever open! Inside in theory by appointment only.

Between a low protection rate (or at least relatively low) and the strength of the side effects that y'all describe, I figured something like that had to be the reason the shingles vaccine was not indicated until age 60. Isn't pneumonia another one like that?

I think the 60 yr old limit is because shingles is a lot rarer in younger adults.
I took a cashiers check from a buyer for my Mustang Pace Car back in 1981 or so. We met at a local branch of the same bank that issued the check in Springfield (OH). I felt that was the best way to be sure the check was authentic. This was before the days of massive fraud with that kind of check.
Some banks have a toll-free number that can be called to verify the legitimacy of the check if desired. I've also asked buyers to collect the business card of the individual who helped them with the check. If I have any doubts I'll call the employee who drew up the CC and ask them to verify it's fully funded.

@Mike, sorry to hear about the shingles. I hope you respond well to the medication.
FWIW, I had shingles in 2000 but mine wasn’t too bad but it lasted well past the normal recovery time. To this day I still get mild sensations on the left kidney area. Weird and kinda funny at the same time.
Let us know how you’re doing.

Speaking of Nigerian princes, I just read that Washington state lost hundreds of millions of dollars to unemployment fraud originating in Nigeria. I wonder how much was lost in other states as well.
Back to the subject of outdoor retaining walls. Late yesterday after the contractor formed and poured the concrete cap for the neighbors stone wall the husband and wife were outside admiring it so I went up to congratulate them on how it turned out. They admitted this was the first DIY project they tried that was too much for them so they hired the contractor, about whom they had nothing but good things to say. I decided to contact him to have him give me a ballpark estimate on one for the front of my house.
This morning he came by and we had a good chat. He impressed me. A very down to earth fellow (pardon the pun) who said all the right things and seemed quite forthright. I liked what I heard and then when he gave me a ballpark price I liked it even more. So I'm getting a stone wall, pending the written estimate being in line with what we discussed.
We had an interesting discussion on materials. I assumed real stone would be more expensive but he said not really. Apparently if you have a good quarry to source it from it can be essentially the same price as man-made materials. They do a concrete footing, excavate the space behind and backfill with gravel over landscape fabric, then mortar the rocks in at the back while leaving the front looking like dry stacking, and top it with a concrete cap. I think it will do great things for curb appeal and resale.

When I bought my 2007 Kia Optima, the seller asked that we go to my bank so I could draw a cashiers check and complete the transaction. No problem I say. When I bought the 2010 Mercue Milan the seller accepted my cashiers check no questions asked, which I thought a bit odd. But, having your bank verify the check is a good idea, did not know they would be able to do that.

Yes, because most younger people had the chicken pox vaccine back in the 70's when it first became available. You need to have contracted chicken pox to be susceptible to Shing

I once worked in the finance department of a local suburban village, one time we had a lot on money orders that villagers used to pay their water and garbage Bill's that were returned to us NSF. Once the owner of the currency exchange that issued the money orders found out he ran to us with a bag of money to make good on those money orders. I really dont remember the reason those orders bounced.

The sign said "2 1/2". Also the road it was on is in Midewin National Tall Grass Prairie which used to be the Joliet Arsenal where they manufactured munitions so it makes sense to have the trucks carrying bombs to drive slow. They have been slowly restoring it to Prairie land over the last few decades. Its interesting to walk there and stumble on the rows of ammo bunkers.

So, sad day for me. My TLX has found a new home. Sort of bittersweet. Loved that car. Not once did it give me a bit of trouble and was cheap to maintain. Said it before, it didn’t do any one thing the best (with the possible exception of the ELS stereo), but did just about everything well.
COmfortable, quick, built very well with high quality materials. And, I liked how it looked.
Met the buyer at the bank. My bank verified the check, the bank it was drawn on, the account and the amount available from the check.
She gave me a ride home (about a 10 minute ride from the bank). As I watched the TLX drive away, without me in it, I had a tinge of sadness.

You may want to look into getting a shingles vaccine then ronsteve. Sounds like it could come back with a vengeance. And, if the vaccine doesn't protect you 100%, it will soften the blow.
I had it at the same age, 6 years later. It was pretty awful. I don't recall a fever, but the lesions were awful, and I looked terrible. Happened during the summer too, because of course.
I am sure these days the vaccine is $5000 and not covered by insurance.

So to close the golf cart saga.... TLDR I bought it.
I had been researching like crazy and 6" lifted, 4 seat models at dealers who refurb them were running 5K to near 7K with "tested good batteries". Most were 2012-2015 models.
Wife found a 2007 Yamaha with brand new US battery (supposed to be really good) with a 6" lift in decent shape for $3500 on the campground's private Facebook site. At first I thought this was high, until I searched high and low to find a comparable cart cheaper. I didn't find much.
I went over earlier today and looked the cart over and drove it. Drove as expected (I've driven my buddy's insane one). Frame had two spots of surface rust (solid, poked it with a screwdriver) and it needs the substrate of the rear seat replaced which is a repair I can do. Seller had the receipt for the batteries which was just done and $800. It was indoor stored in the off season.
She said was firm at $3500. I said with the few issues it has I have $3000 cash in my pocket for her for a quick sale. She excused herself (to call her mom who owned it). Came back and said no deal, they were going to wait it out. I thanked her and started to walk back to my car. Then she said, well my mom really wanted $3300. I held firm at $3000. Some small talk about the PITA selling something is and the calls, FB messages etc. Finally, I said how about we do $3100 and you are done with it. Done deal.
Wife is thrilled and kids can't wait to take a ride. Here are a few seller's pictures. I'll post more once I detail it. Now need to add to my insurance policy and pay the fee to register with the campground.

I give tellers credit for looking out for the customers. I knew an educated woman who fell for the grandma scam and was all set to withdraw $5k to send somewhere for “bail” on her granddaughter. The teller wouldn’t release the money until the woman checked on her granddaughter’s whereabouts.
Nevertheless countless people deposit those phony checks and get scammed. I just thought there must be some technology that could identify them quicker.

Even Walmart has a digital sign that asks people about why they are sending money and suggesting they may be responding to a scam. I don't recall the wording, but in local Walmart it's with the returns counter, so I saw the notices without thinking much about what they said.
So to close the golf cart saga.... TLDR I bought it. . Some small talk about the PITA selling something is and the calls, FB messages etc. Finally, I said how about we do $3100 and you are done with it. Done deal.
Great negotiating. Looks like new, great condition. Those tires have lots of tread, should be good for at least 25000 miles.

The good thing is that the kids can serve as your back up camera. "Dad, you're too close. DAD!!!"
1. If it worked so great, why didn't work within 14 days? Why must we social distance more than 14 days if that's the incubation period and it "works so great?" 2. Why didn't they tell us we'd be social distancing for 2-1/2 or 3 (or more) months to begin with. Initially, it didn't seem we'd have to social distance for so long. No one seemed to really know the time frames involved, and it all seems like a bunch of guess work. 3. What defines "works great?" My view is that theoretically all patients either die or get over it, and the Virus is gone forever. Made extinct from social distancing. Why is extinction too high a bar? What is the bar at all?
The problem with alternative realities is that one can make the alternate world seem as scary as possible (think a world where we didn't bailout banks for those pro bailout proponents, or even the current regime saying things could have been a lot worse without all the genius implementations. One can always argue that "things would have been much worse, but for....."
1. Because people didn't observe them. Some people still don't. Adherence to the rules was building up for weeks. Even in countries where the emergency rules were put in place, like Italy, it too several weeks to implement actual enforcement. 2. Are you this naive, or are just pretending, or perhaps you were listening to this guy who was saying it would disappear in couple of weeks (miraculously of course), not the people talking before or after him? I knew right away it would last this long. My mother got stuck on this side of the Atlantic, she can't get home, as all aviation in Poland is simply suspended since mid March. I knew it right away the earliest she'll be able to come back is late June, most likely July. Just a little bit of knowledge applied with some common sense would tell you this thing will last for a while and they just need time to figure many things out, gather resources, work out new protocols, while not letting (possibly) millions die in a process from overwhelmed systems. These decisions had to be made in real life with limited information. Of course it's a guess work - new virus, bunch of conflicting information pieces, all comes to one decision that many say needs be be made quickly, or else. Quarterbacking from position of self-entitled who, oh mine, got inconvenienced by this, is easy. These are real choices, even if done based on "models" that change from day to day. Just imagine those press titles "Million died. Did they have to?". This is one time I don't envy the executives their power. 3. Did you hear about influenza? People get sick, a few die, virus comes back next year mutated, same people often get sick again. Nothing goes away.
Yes, because most younger people had the chicken pox vaccine back in the 70's when it first became available. You need to have contracted chicken pox to be susceptible to Shing
I had chickenpox in 1983, at age 12. Pretty bad too, as the day that the lesions really picked up, I spiked a 103F fever. I didn't think the vaccine came around until the 90s, at least not in the States.
It’s funny, I had all those childhood illnesses back in the 50s and don’t remember being that sick. I do remember liking all the added attention my mother gave me and getting to play hookey from school. Vaccines have done away with so much of that. How many of you remember getting the smallpox inoculation?

Can confirm, Chickenpox vaccine was not considered standard until the 90s. Was born late 80s and I did not receive any vaccine - had it the good ole fashioned way. Don't remember much of it except wearing socks on my hands to stop from scratching.

I’m generally a trusting person. But, I want my bank to verify the Cashier’s Check, even though they’re supposed to be as good as cash.
Should have this wrapped up by this afternoon if something doesn’t go sideways.

Seems unlikely in this case, given you know who she is and where she works. And if you want to pass a fake, the time to do it is when bank is closed. Though around here, only the drive through is ever open! Inside in theory by appointment only.

You would think in this day and age they could verify electronically instantly. Maybe they can but you have to ask. Not sure, that’s why I’m a cash guy. Not that cash doesn’t have it’s own issues.
I think to be safe GG should keep this woman locked in his basement until the check clears.😱😱😱

FWIW, I had shingles in 2000 but mine wasn’t too bad but it lasted well past the normal recovery time. To this day I still get mild sensations on the left kidney area. Weird and kinda funny at the same time.
Let us know how you’re doing.

Onwards!

I am sure these days the vaccine is $5000 and not covered by insurance.
