Oddly enough I asked my doctor about the vaccine a few years ago and she discouraged me from getting it, so I didn't. Not sure why but she didn't seem to think highly of it.

Probably because the first one wasn't very protective...better than nothing but only a low percentage of people were protected. The newer one has a much higher protection rate...but, that 2nd shot really knocks you out.
Between a low protection rate (or at least relatively low) and the strength of the side effects that y'all describe, I figured something like that had to be the reason the shingles vaccine was not indicated until age 60. Isn't pneumonia another one like that?
I think the 60 yr old limit is because shingles is a lot rarer in younger adults.
Yes, because most younger people had the chicken pox vaccine back in the 70's when it first became available. You need to have contracted chicken pox to be susceptible to Shing
I had chickenpox in 1983, at age 12. Pretty bad too, as the day that the lesions really picked up, I spiked a 103F fever. I didn't think the vaccine came around until the 90s, at least not in the States.
It’s funny, I had all those childhood illnesses back in the 50s and don’t remember being that sick. I do remember liking all the added attention my mother gave me and getting to play hookey from school. Vaccines have done away with so much of that. How many of you remember getting the smallpox inoculation?
Don't remember it... can barely make out the scar on my arm from where I got it. I was one of the last...

Just picked up RX for Valacyclovir, 1000 mg tablets taken twice a day for 7 days. Pain is pretty severe right now.

Thanks, everyone, for your well wishes. It seems something happens to me every month. Someone should write a book on my life after retirement! 🤪🤓
    Get well soon Mike.

Got chicken pox as a kid. Got shingles just couple of weeks ago. Mild case, so no big deal. Probably it wasn't even first flare up. I remember getting a small rash couple of years ago that I thought was some kind of detergent alergy, today I think it was likely shingles. Need a vaccine as soon as this thing is over.

I had no idea that lifted golf carts were a thing until now. Why is that done? Is there a functional reason or is it just to look cool? Be careful not to roll it. I never did that but more than once I bashed my head on the roof getting in so watch that.

We ordered a patio dining table from Home Depot on May 16. It arrived yesterday and we put it together. When we turned it over there was damage so I called the phone number. I waited 23 minutes until it rang once and hung up on me. Man!

On way home from the pharmacy this morning, finally was able to check the tire sizes on the new E450 4MATIC. 245/40 R19 98Y run-flats on all four wheels. So I can rotate the tires every 5000 miles for longer wear. These are Goodyear tires.

    What happened to GGs car?

Funny you should ask that. Got a call from the prospective buyer last night. She said she had the cashier’s check and is coming to drop off the check and get the car today. We’re doing it at my bank.

I’m generally a trusting person. But, I want my bank to verify the Cashier’s Check, even though they’re supposed to be as good as cash.

Should have this wrapped up by this afternoon if something doesn’t go sideways.
When I bought my 2007 Kia Optima, the seller asked that we go to my bank so I could draw a cashiers check and complete the transaction. No problem I say. When I bought the 2010 Mercue Milan the seller accepted my cashiers check no questions asked, which I thought a bit odd. But, having your bank verify the check is a good idea, did not know they would be able to do that.
I didn’t finance the Kia and the dealer was very firm that only a cashier’s check would do. No personal checks or any other form of payment.

I financed the balance after a large down payment on the ATS and the dealer pulled the same trick which annoyed me to no end. It's not like I was some unknown person who just walked in off the street, but the personal cheques they gladly accepted on my previous cars that I bought there were no longer acceptable to them. That fact just goes in the @ab348 Book of Grievances for future reference.

My youngest was born in ‘86 and all 3 kids had it. So you’re right, no vaccine before maybe mid 90s. If you never had chicken pox as a child, you should be vaccinated as it can be very severe if you get it as an adult. And with all the anti-vax stuff going round, fewer kids are getting vaccinated so you could be exposed.

    1. If it worked so great, why didn't work within 14 days? Why must we social distance more than 14 days if that's the incubation period and it "works so great?"
    2. Why didn't they tell us we'd be social distancing for 2-1/2 or 3 (or more) months to begin with. Initially, it didn't seem we'd have to social distance for so long. No one seemed to really know the time frames involved, and it all seems like a bunch of guess work.
    3. What defines "works great?" My view is that theoretically all patients either die or get over it, and the Virus is gone forever. Made extinct from social distancing. Why is extinction too high a bar? What is the bar at all?

The problem with alternative realities is that one can make the alternate world seem as scary as possible (think a world where we didn't bailout banks for those pro bailout proponents, or even the current regime saying things could have been a lot worse without all the genius implementations. One can always argue that "things would have been much worse, but for....."

    1. Because people didn't observe them. Some people still don't. Adherence to the rules was building up for weeks. Even in countries where the emergency rules were put in place, like Italy, it too several weeks to implement actual enforcement.
    2. Are you this naive, or are just pretending, or perhaps you were listening to this guy who was saying it would disappear in couple of weeks (miraculously of course), not the people talking before or after him? I knew right away it would last this long. My mother got stuck on this side of the Atlantic, she can't get home, as all aviation in Poland is simply suspended since mid March. I knew it right away the earliest she'll be able to come back is late June, most likely July. Just a little bit of knowledge applied with some common sense would tell you this thing will last for a while and they just need time to figure many things out, gather resources, work out new protocols, while not letting (possibly) millions die in a process from overwhelmed systems. These decisions had to be made in real life with limited information. Of course it's a guess work - new virus, bunch of conflicting information pieces, all comes to one decision that many say needs be be made quickly, or else. Quarterbacking from position of self-entitled who, oh mine, got inconvenienced by this, is easy. These are real choices, even if done based on "models" that change from day to day. Just imagine those press titles "Million died. Did they have to?". This is one time I don't envy the executives their power.
    3. Did you hear about influenza? People get sick, a few die, virus comes back next year mutated, same people often get sick again. Nothing goes away.

Regarding #2, I suppose I relied too much upon local decision makers like the San Diego School District for my daughter. The initial school closure was only 2 weeks, to get them into April. Of course, that changed rather quickly, but the first school closure gave many (I'm sure I'm not the only one) hope that things would return to normal sooner rather than later.

Regarding #1, if people don't cooperate, it sounds like an argument for not doing it at all since the consequences have been vast. Unemployment is very high.

Regarding #3, some say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I don't know, I've have some bad colds and flu's before, and I feel like they take off some lifespan each time they happen. If they do make you stronger, after having a child in a terrible dirty poorly managed large-chain child care facility that hires a bunch of people that don't want to be there (because they are underpaid), I think my immune system is rock solid now. She got everything from that place and brought it home. Of course, there were a couple outstanding hires (teachers/child care providers) that partially made up for all the young lazy high-turnover employee population there; barely, if it wasn't for one of the good hires I'd have pulled her out of that place; I was on the fence.

Pretty cool. We need four seats and speed limit is 5 MpH!
My son used to live in a complex where the speed limit was 17 MPH. There were signs all along the roads.
I once came upon a SL sign that read 2.5 MPH at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie many years ago. It has long since been removed.
In our Florida complex the speed limit is 14 mph. They thought that would stand out more than 15 mph.
If the speed limit is any number and 1/2, and you are going 4.5 MPH over, is that a ticket fined at 5 over, or under 5? Do you round when calculating the speed fine? I bet the statutes are silent on this matter.

    Flames... No. 😀

Yeah I’d say half of them here are lifted. Drives differently but with the rear seat the lift helps with squatting. The ones that aren’t drag the ground with two adults on the back.

Wife just drove it the first time... she needs a little training. The roads here are pretty bumpy and she had me almost hitting the roof.

Thanks, everyone, for your well wishes. It seems something happens to me every month. Someone should write a book on my life after retirement! 🤪🤓
Well, if you insist, I’ll write it and our retired book pedler can sell it. Just keep an eye on him so he doesn’t screw you on the commission of the claimed sales. :@

Such disappointment. They scrubbed the SpaceX launch due to weather. I’m surprised that I was this emotionally invested in seeing it go up. Who remembers the moon launch in ‘69?

I remember watching the landing on the moon..

So to close the golf cart saga.... TLDR I bought it.

I had been researching like crazy and 6" lifted, 4 seat models at dealers who refurb them were running 5K to near 7K with "tested good batteries". Most were 2012-2015 models.

Wife found a 2007 Yamaha with brand new US battery (supposed to be really good) with a 6" lift in decent shape for $3500 on the campground's private Facebook site. At first I thought this was high, until I searched high and low to find a comparable cart cheaper. I didn't find much.

I went over earlier today and looked the cart over and drove it. Drove as expected (I've driven my buddy's insane one). Frame had two spots of surface rust (solid, poked it with a screwdriver) and it needs the substrate of the rear seat replaced which is a repair I can do. Seller had the receipt for the batteries which was just done and $800. It was indoor stored in the off season.

She said was firm at $3500. I said with the few issues it has I have $3000 cash in my pocket for her for a quick sale. She excused herself (to call her mom who owned it). Came back and said no deal, they were going to wait it out. I thanked her and started to walk back to my car. Then she said, well my mom really wanted $3300. I held firm at $3000. Some small talk about the PITA selling something is and the calls, FB messages etc. Finally, I said how about we do $3100 and you are done with it. Done deal.

Wife is thrilled and kids can't wait to take a ride. Here are a few seller's pictures. I'll post more once I detail it. Now need to add to my insurance policy and pay the fee to register with the campground.

So... how much cash did you really have in that pocket?

I would have thought the seller would have said she'd split the difference with you and take $3,150. Guess she didn't read my book.

Congrats on the golf cart! Bet your local golf course groundskeeper have a heart attack seeing you roll up with those monster wheels. :open_mouth:
I had $3000 in the envelope from the bank. I did have another $200 in my wallet as that was my upper limit.

I was reading about the side effects of the anti viral drug I'm taking an I swear I have every one of them. So I called the doctor and he told me unless they are severe, keep taking the drug. If they persist after 3 days, I am supposed to call him.

He said "NOT" to take Naproxen for the pain as there are some recent studies about negative results with corona virus concerns. So I will bite the bullet and only take super strong pain meds if the pain gets out of hand, which is fast approaching.

You need to get yourself a pick up truck. You never think you need one until something like this happens.
It was an on-line order. I may just drag it to my local store, but I don't really want to. They either don't sell it in the store or it was out of stock - I don't remember. It would have been great if it was in the store.

I suspect the same thing is happening elsewhere, especially in larger states - with UI open to more people who might not have qualified under more draconian systems, it is the wild west out there for fraudsters.

And maybe more alarming is the data used to carry out the fraud - this wasn't a bank transfer or similar, PII of real people was used to submit false claims then credited to the accounts of fraudsters. I'd recommend anyone to check with their state UI authority and ensure no unauthorized account exists. These people all had their info phished via one way or another, and are likely sitting ducks to eventually be victims of more fraud. A credit freeze is not a bad idea - I use it.

Speaking of Nigerian princes, I just read that Washington state lost hundreds of millions of dollars to unemployment fraud originating in Nigeria. I wonder how much was lost in other states as well.

    Reaction Time Test

This simulates you in the driver's seat of a car. You're driving down a road, when you see a big red hand flash in front of you. You have to put on the brakes.

Then, the Reaction Time Test tells you how old you are, when it comes to driving.

The test is based on reaction times of 2,000 people ages 18 and over. The Reaction Time Test plotted their reaction times by age; it matches your reaction time to those averages.

Some of their results may surprise you. The Reaction Time Test found that left-handed people and men have slightly better reaction times than the average person.

Bet you try it more than once!

"Some of their results may surprise you. The Reaction Time Test found that left-handed people and men have slightly better reaction times than the average person."

What confuses me is that "men" have slightly better reaction times than the average person. What is the "average" person? Are not men about 50% of the population? That should indicate that men are "average" or make up 50% of the mean to begin with. So that statement confuses me!

Left-handed people being better than the average person makes sense to me since left-handed people are about 1/4 of the average population and are more logical-sequential than right dominant people.

There, I got that off my chest!🤪

    Anyone know golf carts?

I’m thinking electric is the way to go, but, interested In experiences.

There are a few guys at our campground who sell custom ones with lift kits, rims, lights etc.

I’ve seen those advertised for around $5000 or so and most are 2014-16 models with “tested good” batteries.

There is a 6” lifted 2007 Yamaha electric with brand new batteries ($1000) for $3500. I thought that was a touch high for the age and was thinking more like $2800 or so.

    Thoughts?

Electric is definitely the way to go. Gasoline carts are loud, smell bad, and pollute the air. As far as age and pricing, it depends on the individual cart. They haven't changed much over the last several years. Unless you buy new, nearly all used carts have been used on golf courses and have seen a lot of wear and tear. Courses usually lease them for 2 years and that's where those on the market come from.

I have been on a Naproxen compound with a stomach protector for some years now due to my knee that needs replacing but cannot be done until my heart issues are fully sorted. I am 63 and my doctor has insisted it is the only thing I can take as all other options are worse for my heart. I don't find it particularly effective at pain relief though.

You can bring that book out on Festivas.

I’m assuming my dealer was anxious to roll that car over the curb and didn’t want to wait for a check to clear. I’ve read of some pretty bold scams pulled with personal checks but not on a Kia Soul. I mean, who’d want to steal one?

My Dr has warned me off Naproxen for years as apparently it negatively affects some of the health triggers in my hereditary map.

Someone mentioned shingles only hit elderly people. I’m an outlier, I’m sure. But, I had them when I was 27. Have scars on my back to prove it. I know to this day, I’m accustomed to not sleeping on my back as a result.

So, while I really haven’t been working much over the last several weeks, my official end date is tomorrow. I download all of my files onto thumb drives, packEd up the laptop, the printer, any paperwork (as in literally work on paper) that relates to my company, my leftover business cards, my company credit card, my company ID, and anything else related, to our office in Austin, TX (which is the office I report out of).

I’m slated for my exit interview at 10:00 a.m. with my boss and HR. Should be quick and easy.

They sign off on receiving everything. I sign the form stating I didn’t keep anything, and they send my last check(s) as an employee.

Now I have to deal with the stock options I have, what to do with the Pension (if I do anything), etc.

They’re covering my health care until the end of the year. So, got to figure out how that will all work.

Somehow I feel I’m not done working, though. Weird!
