Maybe I’m too paranoid, but the last entity I want spying on my driving habits is my insurance company. Plus, it’s highly doubtful any of the insurance companies would offer me a “good driver” discount if I plugged in one of their dongles given how I regularly flaunt speed limits.

Plus, I don’t think they even know I drive with only one eye working these days! LOL!

They will now. Have you forgotten there are some talkative big mouths in here? ☹️

Considering Tesla's "awesome" manufacturing and service capabilities, it will take them about 3 years.

The failure is caused when the memory storage in a flash drive used in these vehicles reaches capacity, investigators concluded. The only solution is to replace the physical piece of hardware.

That seems awfully short-sighted for such a tech-advanced company. Kind of hard to believe, really. With all the remote power they have over these cars, I would think cleaning drive space would be one of the simpler commands they could have built in. And I definitely find it hard to believe full replacement is the only solution. I mean, sure, maybe when it actually fails, but if it is still functioning, how could they not be able to delete old files?

A Range Rover Evoque Chinese knockoff, is this real or spoof? Well take a look at the Chinese Land Wind X7. How much of a car's design can be borrowed before it becomes outright theft. I wouldn't surprised if Land Rover files a cease and decease order to prevent the development and sale of the Land Wind X7. And I believe they have.

According to Wiki, they already did:

Jaguar Land Rover's first response came during the Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2014, when car designer Ian Callum, who works for Jaguar, tweeted pictures of the car and pointed out the resemblance between the X7 and the Evoque.[16] Furthermore, the company stated that it was investigating whether the Evoque's design elements were copied by Jiangling Motors, Landwind's parent company, and that it would "take whatever steps are appropriate to protect its intellectual property."[9][7] Jaguar Land Rover later went to court in China, but its complaints were dismissed in early 2015.[14] At the 2015 edition of Auto Shanghai, Jaguar Land Rover's CEO Ralf Speth said he regretted "that all of a sudden, copy-paste is coming up again." He added that his company could not do anything, since there were no laws against copying cars.[13]

Both Jaguar Land Rover and Jiangling Motors had filed design patents for the Evoque and the X7, respectively, but both patents were annulled in 2016. The patent for the exterior design of the Evoque in China was declared invalid in April by the Chinese intellectual property regulator, because the car was unveiled before the patent was filed in China in November 2011. The nullification happened at the request of Jiangling Motors. The X7's patent was annulled shortly thereafter at Jaguar Land Rover's request, because the design was too related to the Evoque's design.[17][18]

In June 2016, Jaguar Land Rover took legal action against Jiangling Motors again in a Beijing court. The car manufacturer blamed Jiangling for copyright infringement and unfair competition. It was a rare move; most non-Chinese car manufacturers choose not to go to court over design copying by Chinese companies because of the small likelihood of winning such lawsuit.[11] In the same month, an unnamed source said to Reuters that Jiangling had agreed with Jaguar Land Rover it would not export the X7 to Brazil. According to that same source, both companies had also discussed what would be acceptable in a design update for the X7.[11] On March 22, 2019, the Beijing Chaoyang District Court ruled in favor of Jaguar Land Rover, saying that Landwind had copied five unique design elements and ordered a cease of production and sales immediately, in addition to paying Jaguar Land Rover compensation.[

Winning such a case in China is almost unheard of:

That’s why I don’t allow the plug-in module to be installed in my car. I use the phone app that uses GPS. Here are the variables:

Speeding at or above 80 mph
Sudden braking (8 mph or more per second)
Time of day you drive (11:00 PM - 5:00 AM) is considered high risk.

They do not consider use of phone for demerits yet, but do alert you if phone is used for making or accepting calls.

Once you have completed the minimum number of trips without demerits, you could remove the app and reload it a month or two before your renewal.

They even allow you to dismiss a trip that has demerits if:

    You were not driving
    Trip info is incorrect
    And a few other reasons.

So it is non-obtrusive as far as I am concerned.

You get a policy discount just for using the app + cash back for achieving goals.

I-75 speed limit is 70 mph and traffic is going at 80 mph minimum. Just to enter the highway you have to be moving at 85 most of the time.
Sudden braking.......sometimes you have to do it to avoid the "Other Guy".
I don't like a plan that doesn't allow for my judgement.
Once I found myself behind a truck carrying a loose load on I-75, I didn't notice until I was behind him, and he was going 80. I had to go 90 to go around him so I could get ahead of him - and I wanted to do it before a big heavy object fell off and went through my windshield.

He ended up doing an entire series about the electric car scam. He went through a bunch go gyrations. I think he got most of his money back, but not through the courts. He was Savy enough to understand that such bad publicity would hurt the seller's sales, so went on a "scammer alert" siege of the seller's known marketing avenues. The scammer threatened to sue the buyer, but never did, given his own culpability and prospect of getting even more negative marketing.

I'm sure the buyer did well with the YouTube ad revenue, too.

In the end, his tests of the electric car that was actually delivered (not the "race" car he ordered was fairly entertaining. But, by even the lowest standards, the one he received was pretty dismal.

It sounds like the guy with the Land Rover clone at least got something relatively decent for his money.

Seems that way. That said, my tolerance for spending 10s of thousands of dollars on any product, and it not operating the way it’s supposed to (like constant stalling or the possibility of catching on fire) is very low.

Went to the Kia store yesterday to drop off the Telluride. Gotta say, it does have strong appeal for those who are in the SUV market. It’s really quite nice, drives better than any SUV I’ve ever driven or even rode in. I think it looks good, inside and out. Handles well (for what it is) and is nicely put together. I’d even be more interested to see ow one of the upmarket ones drives.

Kia service guys were absolutely deferential in their treatment of me. I don’t require that, and I don’t expect it. They said that there seems to be some sort of Kia corporate knots surrounding all vehicles that are subject to the engine fire hazard. As such, they’re inundated. While they don’t “think” I would suffer any sort of fire (they said they hadn’t seen any yet, in any of those they’ve seen affected by the recall), they certainly understood why someone would not want to drive something that had a higher probability to catch on fire.

They gave me a phone number that was tied into Kia Corporate Consumer relations and suggested I talk to them. Not sure why they wanted me to talk to them, but I did. I have a case that’s now open but I don’t know what the purpose of that would be except in the event I would go to arbitration with them, which as of right now, I don’t plan on doing.

In any event, they gave me a previous gen Optima as a loaner. Only 6K miles on it and was probably some sort of manager’s car. It’s the turbo 4 cyl sport model. But, it’s nowhere near as sporty as even the Telluride.

It’s not very fast. The steering is way too light. Brakes are mediocre. It’s ride is floaty. It doesn’t corner particularly well. Interior seems fine. Stereo sux! Can’t seen anyone wanting to buy it, unless it was very cheap (which it probably would be if they ever decided to sell it).
You just reminded me that the Optima's base sound system was terrible. Horrible! Doesn't anyone have "standards" anymore?

Seems like a BOOM market for tunes that maximize braking at no more than 8 MPH/second. To hell with lives.

The tune could also move your electronic limiter down to 80 MPH, and prevent ignition between 11 PM and 5 AM; problem solved; 100% success insured.

However, since I have elected the “Premium Dues Package” I see that I get credit for all posts. I hope I’m not giving away any secrets but I think Edmunds should promote this option more. It’s well worth the difference.

I think the car wizard nominated the 3800 as one of the best engines ever, with it's combo of power, mileage, durability, and (his favorite) super easy and cheap to work on!

The 3800 is one of the best engines ever. How could it not be? They used it for years, it was durable and they managed good FE out of it.

The only problem I have with it is they used it for too long. It was still in service when some other really good engines were on the scene offering more power with even greater FE. This includes the General’s own 3.6, which is also a great motor.

The intake manifold problem was more due to deathcool than the engine itself. That plagued more than just GM’s 3800.

I would complain if I were you, paying for the Premium Dues Package and you didn't get credit for Post: 2,069, it stayed the same for 2 posts. And then there were all the posts you lost when you changed your handle! :'(

On the 3100 and perhaps the 3800, the intake gasket issue was also caused by using a plastic based intake manifold. I remember the service dept telling dad they replaced his 3100 with a metal intake manifold. It was on a 95 Cutlass Ciera.

It seems that most of the GM engineers who designed engines in their glory days retired without passing their wisdom on to their replacements when the next-gen engines were designed. So you got the ticky Chevy V-6 with plastic intakes, the attempt to make it into the Twin Dual Cam 3.4, the thrashy Quad-4, the Caddy HT4100, the split-block Northstar with its early problems, and even the 3800 with its own intake issues. It was a dark time for the General.

one of the Wichita Youtube crowd (100% Jake) recently got a miled up Buick S/C 3800, and has done a bunch of work on it. Pulled valve covers and intake off, and the S/C, to replace leaking gaskets, etc. Showed some of the weak spots that there were better replacements for. One was replacing plastic cooling elbows with metal ones. Little stuff like that to address known weak spots.

the S/C certainly did make it a lot more complicated to work on. Without that, really good access to everything.

The 3.6L has it’s own weak spot as people who were negligent with oil changes found out when the timing chains went bad.

Didn’t JRgo have to replace them on that poorly maintained V6 Camaro he featured?
