@snakeweasel Snake, you might be social distancing but you did 2 posts and got credit for 1 (Posts: 16,848) @oldfarmer50 Same thing....( Posts: 16,845)
You are doing all this work and not getting paid for it!
Shhhhh! How do you think we collect our dues?
However, since I have elected the “Premium Dues Package” I see that I get credit for all posts. I hope I’m not giving away any secrets but I think Edmunds should promote this option more. It’s well worth the difference.
jmonroe
I would complain if I were you, paying for the Premium Dues Package and you didn't get credit for Post: 2,069, it stayed the same for 2 posts. And then there were all the posts you lost when you changed your handle!
I knew if anyone was going to keep tabs on posts, it would be you. You otta sign up for the Premium Dues Package but then maybe you shouldn’t. What a surprise you’d get. With that package you get access to what Edmunds considers “Worthy Post Counts. Quality posts get extra credit while posts for the sake of getting post counts are assessed a “Post Docking Penalty”. Guess who leads in that category?😳

It seems that most of the GM engineers who designed engines in their glory days retired without passing their wisdom on to their replacements when the next-gen engines were designed. So you got the ticky Chevy V-6 with plastic intakes, the attempt to make it into the Twin Dual Cam 3.4, the thrashy Quad-4, the Caddy HT4100, the split-block Northstar with its early problems, and even the 3800 with its own intake issues. It was a dark time for the General.
I think all manufacturers put out a clunker or two. Look how bad the Ford 5.4L 3 valve was compared to the 4.6L or the Coyote. Some of the problems only manifest due to neglect on the part of the consumer who for some reason think a domestic car isn’t worth doing routine maintenance on. Some engines would tolerate abuse but today’s high tech/high tolerance motors can’t.
Of course, there’s always the problem of car makers putting in cheap plastic parts to save 10 cents. But that’s another story.

The 3800 is one of the best engines ever. How could it not be? They used it for years, it was durable and they managed good FE out of it.
The only problem I have with it is they used it for too long. It was still in service when some other really good engines were on the scene offering more power with even greater FE. This includes the General’s own 3.6, which is also a great motor.
The intake manifold problem was more due to deathcool than the engine itself. That plagued more than just GM’s 3800.
I had the 3800 in my ‘95 Bonneville and I agree it was a good engine except for the intake manifold problem. Mine went with just over 60K miles. I was going to do it myself but the garage where I get my PA state inspections gave me a price that was too good to pass up. Since I knew he did good work I let him do it especially since he was deemed the expert in this area about doing that job. As far as it being a good engine, I remember this shop owner telling me it was the best engine GM ever built but only because it put a lot of money in his pocket.
As for gas mileage, I routinely got almost 32 MPG while driving back and forth from SC to the Burgh and that was with the A/C on. The first time I saw that I blamed Mrs. j for writing down the wrong mileage after filling up in SC just before getting on the interstate to head to the Burgh for a visit. I haven’t come close to that kind of fuel economy since.

The 3.6L has it’s own weak spot as people who were negligent with oil changes found out when the timing chains went bad.
Didn’t JRgo have to replace them on that poorly maintained V6 Camaro he featured?</blockquote Heavy oil consumption on the 3.6 was a fairly common issue as well. The 3.6 is another GM nice running engine, like the Northstar, 4.1, that becomes fragile as it ages.

My Stinger is still at the dealer's service dept for the fire in the engine bay recall. I called them to get an update yesterday. Not sure exactly what's going on. But, the first service writer I talked to said the parts weren't in yet (they said they were when I dropped it off). I asked to talk to the service manager, who told me they found some other things wrong with the Stinger.
"Such as?"
I guess the electronic shifter, which mimics a mechanical shifter, started balking at going into gear. The shifter would move, but no gear would be engaged. Meaning, either the movement of the shifter would not correlate to the proper gear. Or, the transmission was going bad. Plus, the "heated steering wheel" button, which is also in the console, stayed stuck down in the “on” position. It has a timer on it, but I guess that’s fouled up, too. Result? It drains the battery completely.
What would cause this?
Seems, they found the culprit to be some sort of sticky fluid was spilled in the console, and over time more and more “gunk” would accumulate in the area, and the electrical portions in the console would corrode and quit working. The fix it seems is to replace the entire console with all the associated electronics that are in the console. There isn’t just one or two pieces that can be fixed.....it’s an entire unit.
What’s that got to do with me? The “spillage” is not covered under warranty, and the console and labor to replace it costs well over $1,000.
As I explained to them, there are only 3 entities that have driven the Stinger than I’m aware of.....
1) The selling dealer, Wyler Kia 2) The servicing dealer, Cronin Kia 3) Me
I know I didn’t spill anything as I don’t eat or drink in my car. That leaves #1 and #2. #2 said they didn’t. #1 has yet to deny or admit anything.
Kia corporate says it’s not covered under warranty. Servicing dealer is trying to get KIA to cover the repair under “goodwill”. No one seems to be budging.
I don’t even know if they’ve done the recall work, yet.
I contacted KIA Customer Service. We all know those people have one job to do. Listen intently and then put my complaints in the circular file.
Believe it or not, I HATE this. But, it’s now going on 3 weeks of this fiasco. I filed for Lemon Law with BBB Autoline.
I know the drill. BBB contacts Kia corporate. Kia corporate will either hold the selling dealer’s feet to the fire (remember, same dealer group as the one who I had the Cadillac craziness with). They seem to dig in, as they did with the Cadillac. Not thinking that’s going to end well with them.
Or, Kia agrees to cover it under warranty, which they’ve given no indication of doing so far.
We go to arbitration, which is a crap shoot.
As it stands, my car is sitting at the servicing dealer’s with no battery hook up, I suppose gathering dust.

@gg, I feel your pain. Apparently you got stung by the Stinger. Your travails sounds like my son-in-law who had all kinds of problems with his Honda Accord, Volvo S80, Volvo SV-70, Mercedes Benz 500, Tesla Model X and even a Toyota Camry. None of these vehicles reached their expected useful life and he was in constant conflict with his dealers and manufacturers. I must say this guy has had a love-hate relationship with cars. He drives as if he owns the public roadways and once he was given a $1,000 reckless/speeding driving ticket even while his father was in the car. I have forbidden him from driving my vehicle and once when he drove my wife's car, you guest it, she had to return to the dealer for a realignment. I wouldn't consider your experience similar to my SIL's but you're one unlucky guy.

LOL!! Who didn't see this coming? I guess you can add another automaker notch to your belt. Good luck with Kia. I have heard anecdotally that they play hardball, even when it is a case where there is a well-documented problem such as with their smaller 4-cylinder engines failing just out of warranty. Maybe they will realize who they are dealing with here and fold.
@graphicguy, I’m sorry you have to undergo another Lemon Law situation, but I have a feeling that this will turn out easier than the Cadillac one. Please keep us informed.

WOW, that’s a -itch. But it going to be impossible to prove who did it. Add to that the dealer where this sticky situation is now. I personally believe this dealer caused the problem because if it was due to an earlier spill the problem would have happened then. Once a sugary substance dries that is when you have a problem not a year later. Have you ever noticed how people act today at dealerships? They can’t walk from here to there without a phone in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. Good things can’t come from that. No telling how many dealer folks have been in your car and/or moved it since you dropped it off.
Needless to say I hope you win this but I don’t know how that is possible. All we can do is wish you good luck.

It's always odd how a service dept or repair shop automatically responds "It wasn't us" when a customer discovers damage that they know wasn't done by the owner.

Can you briefly summarize what was your crime against Hyyndai/Kia?
You forgot? How could you? I moaned about it for weeks.☹️
OK, briefly. They found a “discrepancy with my oil change log sheet”. Said the mileage shown for an oil change I did after they did warranty work for a seat belt light was lower than when they did that work. I showed them where their bookkeeping was wrong with a few service visits but that made no difference to them.
I was left with killing a handful of sales because of that but the nail in the coffin was when my uncle told them to pound sand on a car they were getting in for him. I then got a call from them because of that but that was my turn to tell them to go pound sand. I guess it runs in the family.
If this isn’t enough detail, ask @driver100, he likes to remind me of how I screwed up all the time. 😎

GG.....what a mess....there was nothing wrong with the car when you took it in....except the fire hazard had to be fixed. It would seem that the gummed up transmission is one that happened at the dealership....most likely the current one. It would be good to have it analyzed, it might be something you don't drink but that their mechanic does....like coffee - triple, triple. At least you have experience with the lemon law route........might as well start as soon as possible. This is one of those things you couldn't see coming, you buy a car that gets rave reviews, it is made by a company that has a pretty good track record for building good cars, and you have a problem that is not an easy one to solve. Good luck, not something you need right now.....but I hope you can nail them, no one should have to put up with that when they buy a new car.

That’s funny, I had a 91’ Olds with the 3.8L and I took it on a 300 miles trip. The gas gauge was broken so I stopped at the gas station as soon as I arrived. I assumed the tank would be empty but it only took 10 gallons. 30mpg with four people in the car @70 all the way was impressive since I was used to driving emissions choked cars that barely could get 20.

Unless your former Cadillac dealer snuck over and dumped a smoothie in your console that sounds like a BS story. Perfect from the Kia dealer’s perspective as they could blame poorly designed electrical component failure on the customer with no way for the customer to prove he didn’t do the damage.
I’d search the Kia forums for any reports of other owners being sold that bill of goods.

Partially, I blame myself. Some dealers I just throw business to because I get good deals. That doesn’t make them good dealers, as I can’t seem to get through my thick skull.
Maybe it’s my expectations. Still, as @roadburner mentioned, KIA is not doing themselves any favors by irritating their customers. They don’t seem to care. The dealership group I’ve had the most issues with doesn’t seem to care about repeat business either.
While I didn’t pay $55K for the car, the expectations in that price range are different in that price range.
Eventually we’ll end up in front of the arbitrator. I’m OK with that. I now have more time to devote to the issues. Just irritating to me.

One of the primary reasons we moved to our area in 04 was the quiet rural atmosphere. Horse farms, general working farms surrounded us. Most of that is disappearing at lightning speed. Population has more than doubled in10 years to 24k. This beautiful farm land about a half mile from us is to become a high density 600+ residential neighborhood. 😕

We took a quick 130 mi round trip today. Some stop and go and interstate driving. Very pleased with the mpg on RUG. Though not unique to the Passat I like how the LED DRLs and turn signals trade places. Also when the headlights are on and you are in a low speed corner or say your left turn signal is on, the left fog light or right if turning right illuminates to act as a cornering light.

That’s a shame but I can see why. I haven’t seen that much flat land since I left SC in early ‘97.

everyone wants things to stay the same as it was for them. Remember, 10 years ago, the locals were complaining about you moving in and running the quiet atmosphere!

The burgh certainly isn’t flat. I remember Powers Run near Blawnox (sp?) giving me a challenge when someone came to a stop in the middle of the hill and my car will tall economy gears and manual transmission did not want to start moving without heavy clutch slipping.

I know and that isn’t lost on me. Selfish I guess. We are starting to think about moving, downsizing, going more rural with land where my wife can do her organic gardening and hopefully a garage for me to have a weekend toy.

I know what you mean. When I bought my property in 1981 it was basically rural with farms and empty land. Today there is only one working horse farm left and everything else is developed. I have one of the biggest parcels around.

Just got finished read 'Arrogance and Accords'. Staggering level of corruption by corporate sales and looking the other way by senior management.
One of my most favorite books. As I grew up in Oxnard, I appreciated the story about Honda of Oxnard and the “dealer” they opened in Santa Paula. I remember when the dealer moved locations.
I have purchased and serviced multiple vehicles in the past 15 years at Hendrick dealerships including my most recent purchase of the Passat. My experience with them has been positive. I know the past history...

Dealers and Kia corporate are stuck in a stalemate.
GG, all I can say about your trials and tribulations with the Stinger and Kia is, “...that’s bull dung, bull turd, bull excrement, bull meadow muffin..,” to name a few. Believe me it wasn’t easy to keep my comments “clean” if you know what I mean!
No one has more bad luck on this board than you and I feel so bad for you. The first time I remember you coming head to head with bad luck was that Asian woman who left you with a Honda and hightailed it back to her parents in her home country in Asia. Then there was the Cadillac and GM. Now the Kia Stinger and a loss of sight in one of your eyes.
I’ll have to add you to my prayer list - in fact consider that done - the prayer list that is! 😩🥶🤨🤓

No reason to hold past transgressions against the dealers. While their hands certainly weren’t clean, they were doing what they thought was right to ensure a steady supply of cars.

Of course, there’s always the problem of car makers putting in cheap plastic parts to save 10 cents. But that’s another story.

I also agree with @28firefighter .

It must be contagious, one of our poster buddies also has/had problems with his SIL. Happy to say that’ll never happen to me since I only have two sons...so far.😎
