I clicked on this video to watch the 2022 Infiniti QX55 SUV instead my visual senses were overtaken by my aural senses. Don't know if it is the poet Amanda Gorman effect but this guy's presentation sounds like high brow poetry. What a joy to listen to the marriage of form over function. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLGoW2vOevY
Still a CVT, so ZERO interest from me. How often does a manufacturer DOWNGRADE a model? I would take an EX37 any day of the week rather than any other CUV from Nissan/Infiniti in the past 9 years. Crazy.
EX37....all day, every day. I came close to buying one a couple of times, but didn’t pull the trigger. Fast “quasi” station wagon that handled really well. Plus, it had all the goodies like leather, wood, etc.
Infiniti seems to have a penchant for “mucking up” their vehicles these days.
My EX was probably one of those cars I should have just held onto. That, the GTI, and my first S70 are the 3 that I most regret getting rid of. AND, I should have kept the S70 ALONG WITH the 350z when the baby came. Oh well. Stupid is as stupid does.

The one I liked best was in @Michaell’s hometown of Oxnard. That was a beautiful Embassy Suites right on the ocean. I’m pretty sure it was called Mandalay Beach Resort. Eventually it was bought by the Sterling Hotel group (early 90s) but they maintained the Embassy Suites breakfast and happy hour policy. Almost makes me want to come out of retirement.

That got built after I moved to Colorado, but I've certainly driven past it a number of times on my visits home.
That is a nice stretch of beach, for sure.
Did you do any sightseeing while you were there?
Funny you should ask. In the late 80’s I did get a chance to do some sightseeing up that way. It was the week before Thanksgiving and Mrs. j came along that time. We stayed at the Oxnard Embassy Suites and while I worked Mrs. j lounged at the beach reading a book. It was not warm enough to go into the ocean but plenty of sun. I always took the week of Thanksgiving off so we drove up the coast the following week to Santa Barbara and a town that was like an old German village, kinda novel place but I can’t remember the name of that place. Even went to a famous place called the Pea Soup Inn which was in a Best Western Motel.
On the way back to LA we stopped off at Pepperdine University. Went to the top of the hill overlooking Malibu. That night we stayed at some place in Malibu then went to a restaurant for breakfast that was quite famous (can’t remember the name of that joint either) it had menu items and booths named after actors and actresses. To this day Mrs. j says she’d like to go back and do that again but so far we haven’t. To be honest, it was nice but it’s not on my bucket list.
EDIT: I just remembered the name of that old German village. I’m almost positive it was Solvang. Still can’t remember the name of the restaurant.

Solvang is a Danish village, and its Andersen’s Pea Soup restaurant you’re thinking of.
Late 80’s? I still lived there.
Don’t know the Malibu restaurant you’re referring to.

One of the GM dealers here used to do a free-for-all BBQ every Saturday lunchtime and was noted for always having pizza, giant boxes of donuts, etc in the showroom most of the time. So you would wander in to look at a car on the showroom floor and the salesperson's lead after greeting you would be "Feel like some pizza?"
They got sold to a large dealership group a few years ago and now it is no-fun city.
There was a dealership near me that every Saturday they had free hot dogs, chips a drinks. From what I was told they stopped it as they found that they had regulars coming only for a free lunch.
Their claim to fame was a free cooked to order breakfast and free drinks at their hospitality room from 5 to 7 every night. So you know that me and my traveling buddies had to stop by for a drink before going out for dinner. This one night the gal behind the bar comes over and said, “same as usual and I have to see your room key”. I said, “huh, when did that start”. She said, “it’s been a policy for a good while now but tonight I have to ask because one of the district bosses is watching us to insure we ask”. Not thinking I asked why. She said, “there are too many folks that get off the interstate (they were right at an exit) to get a few free drinks then leave.
jmonroe
I remember the time that a few friends and I were at the hotel bar in Tuscaloosa on a Friday night before a football game.
They had a free wing buffet on Friday evenings and nickel beer for an hour.
We watched a guy who came in about 10 minutes before the nickel beer started, got a plate of wings, and sat at the bar. I asked the bartendress why he didn't order a drink. She said he comes in every Friday and to watch what happens.
When it came time for the almost free beer he ordered one, got some more wings, then ordered another beer. When he was finished he threw a dime on the bar and left.
In my poorest days I could never be that cheap. The transport crew tells stories of one guy who would always want to stop at a cheese place that offered free samples. He would grab a plate and while the others ordered their lunch he would grab multiple free helpings before joining them...never paying a cent.
Eventually the owner came over and asked him to have his lunch somewhere else in the future.

Back around 1990 I had a guy working for me who was an OK guy but an incredible penny-pincher. He had an excuse because he had 3 young kids and money was always tight. Occasionally our group would go to lunch at a spaghetti place that offered a special that was either $1.99 or $2.99, I forget which. He would round up to the nearest dollar and leave, so a 1-cent tip. It made me cringe every time. Eventually one of the ladies in the group chewed him out for it but it seemed to roll right off him.
We had a snowstorm come through yesterday and while out and about I saw a Ural motorcycle taking on the snowstorm. A Ural is a Russian made motorcycle with a side car that has a drive shaft between the rear wheel of the motorcycle and the wheel of the sidecar making it two wheel drive.
And now you have sent your crappy snowstorm up our way....it just arrived! (Started near Texas, picked up moisture, and is headed North - East - sometimes it is you guys fault)
Hey, I believe in sharing our good fortune.

Those lights on the rear bumper though, always made me twitch. Should be a few out there, the production run of that design was close to a decade, making it into the era when everything was renamed at the behest of the clown-drone CEO. Depreciation is probably very real, I bet you can find a bargain on a low mileage one laying around somewhere.

My father in law explained to me that I was tipping too much because I figured the percentage before I subtracted any taxes. Yet he bought a new Park Avenue every three years- and would get hosed on the trade as well as the new four wheeled Barcalounger. I suggested that it would almost certainly be less expensive to lease a car rather than flipping one every 36 months, but he insisted that he wanted to own his car...
I used to tip 15% but lately I’ve become more generous. Yesterday I left $20 for a $14 lunch. I think wait staff have had it hard lately.

When I was attending law school in Lexington, Kentucky there was a bar called 803 South. The bar started to run a promotion where on Fridays for $5 you got a 803 South t-shirt, a plate of spaghetti, and all the beer you could drink from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. That was in 1981. This went on for several weeks; I can’t imagine how management expected to make a profit.

My wife's family had been in the restaurant business for years, so I've heard stories about tips. I think those folks work hard for their money.

$34 lunch? "strip joint?" Nah, that sounds like Hooters.
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.
I agree. You can only water down the sauce and beer so much before you get knifed.

Hey, JM, w :@ ith your advanced age life experience, you should hang out over in the Mystery Car Pix board on here and regale us with these sort of stories about the places shown.
Yeh, JM's story must have happened about 60 years ago.......a nickel beer!
HEY, get your poster buddies straight. @venture is the guy who mentioned nickel beers not me. :@ However, I remember 2 cent beers to promote a charity back in my working days. Who says you can’t get a buzz for a dime?

Oh yeh, he was replying to your post but both stories were blasts from the past. We used to go to the bar after volleyball in the old days.....when we ordered drinks they gave us free wings. One guy in the group never bought a drink, but sure ate as many wings as he could......and it wasn't me!
We used to hang out at a place that every Sunday had a deal where for a $10 cover charge you had a free buffet and two free drinks (beer and well drinks nothing fancy). It was a pretty good deal and we did take advantage of it often.
Sounds like a strip joint.
Nah, snake wouldn't have gone to one of those. And how do you know
Do you have to ask? Who do you think that farmer with mud on his jeans was that was standing in line behind @Snake?

In my day I’ve stood in line at places worse than that.

% tip is fin, but there should be a minimum, say $5. That’s what we do. Just as much work to serve a cheaper meal.
Exactly. Also way back when before kids we frequented a bar that had Tuesday all night happy hour. Essentially half price apps and drink specials. We knew the bartenders well and always tipped them as if the bill was full price. We still saved a good bit of money. In the end we usually ended up with one on the house since they knew we took care of them.

When my son got married we paid for the rehearsal dinner so buying dinner for everyone in the wedding and a few more we ended up with a pretty big bill. The tip I calculated was well north of $200 (maybe over $300) which I happily paid, of course this was split over the three people who were serving us. Needless to say those servers made sure I didn't pay for another drink the rest of the time we were there, nor did I even have to ask for another.

Reminds me of a certain unnamed person who goes to Wendy and gets a $1.49 Jr Burger and a 25 cent Seniors Coke...........how do you have the nerve asking for a kids burger and a seniors drink to go with it? Personally, I don't think I would eat that if they paid me $5 to eat it! It is pathetic for the poor business owner too, how is he supposed to survive with someone thinking they are outsmarting him by buying a loss leader item?
Same person would go to a little restaurant and buy a $1.99 breakfast every morning...2 eggs, bacon, home fries and toast....with coffee and tax came to $2.74 every morning for years. One morning he went in and it came to $2.86 so he asked the owner why the price increased. The owner told him to get out of his restaurant and to never return again. I am not sure if it was a slight increase in price or if he had asked for an extra jam!
Driver, that’s a sandwich on the regular menu, not a kids meal. Jr. just means a smaller patty. When we stop there, we always get a Jr. cheeseburger deluxe.
The soda is no big deal. They actually give you free refills (though many stores now have self serve drink machines).
I didn't realize that but how can they make a profit on a 99 cent hamburger....I am almost afraid to ask? And how does Checkers in Florida - I have never been there - sell 2 hamburgers, 2 fries, 2 drinks for like $3, does it qualify as food? Maybe it is delicious, I am afraid to try it! The soft drinks I get....they cost almost nothing to make.
I’ve been leaving start/stop on lately. Combined with auto brake hold it’s not too bad. If I’m stuck in traffic it certainly goes off, but putting around town it’s not horrible.
I used to despise it, but my wife turns it back on in her car all the time (it’s probably the one setting not tied to a profile) so I decided to give it a shot.
With as much as we drive it probably saves us 25 cents a month.
I really don't get why some people don't like it. My wife doesn't like it, but when I ask her why she just said she doesn't like it. I've learned to just let that sleeping dog lie there.
Don't get me wrong. I never said I liked it. It just doesn't bother me.
I don't like the wasted delay time, or lag.... it might only be a second or less, but multiply that by thousands over a lifetime and it adds up to a lot of wasted time.
? Meaning a waste of YOUR time? Which car is this? Sounds like a REALLY bad system if it is making you wait at all. In all cars I have had it in thus far, as soon as I begin to release the brake, it restarts. I don’t have to change anything on my part. Even if I were pretending to be Vin Diesel when the green light strikes, the engine is spinning before I can apply the gas. Zero wasted time.
Let's go to a local drag strip and test your theory. Same cars, one with stop-start, the other without, and let's race. I am willing to wager big time $$$ that using the stop-start feature will result in a greater time between A and B.
I was using the stop/start feature on the BMW today as I wasn't to play with the eco mode. In the normal motion to take my foot of the brake and putting in on the gas the car was starting as I was releasing the brake and running by the time I got my foot on the gas. So I would say that the time distance would be very slight if at all. That is unless you're one of those that sit at stop lights with one foot on the brake and the other on the gas.
I just have a big fast foot. @stickguy brings up a good point, with a typical automatic transmission you expect to already be moving forward by the time your foot hits the gas pedal, not just starting to rev up the engine.
I'm pretty sure the car will be running by the time I get the foot to the pedal, as soon as the brake pedal starts to get released it turns the engine over.
As for the car already moving sure that 1/2 inch and 0.0001 MPH head start really makes a difference.
I think the difference is more then that in the typical car. 0-1 MPH happens in a flash even at idle.

What modes does your BMW have? We have an eco mode, a comfort mode and a sport mode. I see a major difference in the shifting between the sports mode and the other modes but there is really no difference in shifting between the comfort mode and the eco mode. The big difference between the comfort and eco modes is that the eco mode does reduce power to power draining items like A/C, heated seats and steering wheel and such, as well as activating the stop/start function.
I programmed the wife's to always start up in Eco mode, at her request. If I forget to turn it up when I get in, the throttle input is painfully delayed. Push the pedal to the floor and it will still basically override Eco, but if trying to drive normal, it is like driving a 100hp compact. I hate Eco mode.
Mine has four settings: Eco-Comfort-Sport-Sport Plus. I never use Eco, as it messes with the AC (car gets steamy) and makes the car a terrible dog (laggy response across the board), Comfort is default and it's mostly alright with a slight lag in downshifting, Sport moves the upshift speeds and pretty much eliminates the the downshift lag on the accelerator push, Sport Plus makes everything quick and leaves car in low gear when let off the power to coast, so you can easily punch it back. I basically use Comfort on my daily commute, switching to Sport on occasion, when feel like needing access to quick downshifts (or go with Manual option). Don't remember last time I used Sport Plus, must have been shortly after I bought the car. I know, I should be ashamed for the waste of opportunity for fun. What can you do, seems like I'm much more pedestrian than care to admit.
Well, if you REALLY wanted Sport Plus mode you'd have bought the 440. Looks like you are using the car as intended.

material cost is low. Might be a loss leader. Make it up in volume. But most people buy more expensive stuff, so in aggregate, they make more (higher average). But they never made all that much on us when the wife and I would stop. 2 Jr. deluxe burgers, one small fry to split and 1 drink to share (sometimes 2 baby fries since I always get yelled at for taking one too many). Ends up being a whopping $6-$7.

That is true, they really make their profit on the fries and the drinks people will get to go with the loss leader hamburger. Your 2 baby fries to save arguments reminds me of my new policy if we get a fancy dessert at a good restaurant and plan to share it (rarely order dessert but when we do we usually share it) I ask them to cut it in half before they bring it out, otherwise I will end up with the smaller portion.

I checked the Canadian website...Deluxe Jr Burger in Canada is $1.39, now don't tell me it is less than that in the U.S. It costs less to buy a Jr Burger than it would cost to make your own lunch! (not saying whether it is better or not). Probably the paper packaging has more nutrition.

Isn't Wendy's and Tim Horton's owned by the same corporation?
they are building a Tim Hortons about a mile from my house. Will probably stop in once just to check it out, and then never again. We try to avoid donuts, and don't drink coffee. So not sure how much is left!
Speaking of restaurant problems, up here right now there is a lot of chatter about how local restos are being taken advantage of by outfits like Uber Eats, Skip the Dishes, DoorDash, etc, who have become very popular during the pandemic when sit-down eating has been eliminated for the most part. They are complaining that those orders are virtually zero profit for them because the delivery services charge them 30% off the top for their services, and incredibly, are calling for govt regulation of the percentage they can charge.
I don't understand why they don't have a take-out only menu with proportionally higher prices to offset the delivery fees. Nor do I accept that a typical mid-to-high-end sit down place is losing money on a $25-$30 entree where they don't have servers and other staff working except for those in the kitchen. Maybe I'm off-base, I dunno.
simple answer is to just pass through the delivery charge. if nothing else, a lot more people would go pick it up themselves. That is what I do. Hate delivery. so I order, prepay usually, then just show up and they hand it to you and you are off. Plus I make sure to arrive early so get it right out of the oven instead of sitting around for ages waiting for a driver to show up.
A car at idle doesn't accelerate that fast, in the time it takes you to get your foot of the brake and get it to the gas the car will not get going to fast.

We used to go to the bar after volleyball in the old days.....when we ordered drinks they gave us free wings. One guy in the group never bought a drink, but sure ate as many wings as he could......and it wasn't me!

The soda is no big deal. They actually give you free refills (though many stores now have self serve drink machines).

Unfortunately, it looks like your Mariner is toast. That's a lot of damage and that's just what you can see.

My wife's family had been in the restaurant business for years, so I've heard stories about tips. I think those folks work hard for their money.

And how does Checkers in Florida - I have never been there - sell 2 hamburgers, 2 fries, 2 drinks for like $3, does it qualify as food? Maybe it is delicious, I am afraid to try it!
The soft drinks I get....they cost almost nothing to make.

Your 2 baby fries to save arguments reminds me of my new policy if we get a fancy dessert at a good restaurant and plan to share it (rarely order dessert but when we do we usually share it) I ask them to cut it in half before they bring it out, otherwise I will end up with the smaller portion.

It costs less to buy a Jr Burger than it would cost to make your own lunch! (not saying whether it is better or not). Probably the paper packaging has more nutrition.
