    Appliances.

Warning - long-ish post ahead. Skip if you're not interested.

The house we are in is only 6 years old, and we've been here 4 of them.

Our GE dishwasher started acting up a month or so ago - we noticed that the dishes weren't dry at the end of the cycle. OK, we can hand dry them before they get put away.

Finally, we'd had enough of it, and I called "the guy" to come out and take a look. He peers under it and declares it non-salvageable. The heating element had burned out, and the washer motor had developed a small leak. Either one, on its own, would have made a repair feasible, but together it just wasn't worth it.

He recommends a Whirlpool (I can't remember what the consensus was here, and I didn't have time to rehash it). Off to Home Depot I go, where I pick out an upper-mid level model that happened to be on sale - this was the Friday of President's Day weekend.

This is where the fun begins. I wanted to get the purchase locked in as I have no idea how long it will take to arrive and delivered / installed. They tell me a week, so I'm pretty happy about that. We schedule the install for the following Saturday (the 26th). I'm supposed to get a call the day before, telling me which 4 hour window I can expect it.

I get the call, and the window is set for 3-7PM. Not ideal, but beggars can't be choosers. The delivery company tells me I'll get a call from the truck about 30 minutes before they arrive.

Saturday comes, and .... no call. No delivery. No new dishwasher. Nothing. I'm pretty steamed (PG language for the site), and I go into HD the next day to register my displeasure. Nobody knows anything, so they leave a message for the in-house expediter to follow up.

Touch base with the expediter, and it'll be another week before I can get back onto the schedule. Grrr. Well, today was the day. Got the call yesterday telling me the window was, again, 3-7PM. Fine, all is good.

Except the delivery guys show up at noon. Turns out the main truck had broken down, and they loaded the "small" appliances onto a Transit cargo van and were doing deliveries as they could. Fortunately, I was able to accommodate the change of schedule and they get it installed with no issues. Score one for permanent WFH.

I ran it once with a cleaning disk in it, and again with a full load. Exceptional results. Quiet, too.

When I met with the guy in the HD appliance section, I asked demanded some "consideration" for the massive screw up. He told me to contact him when the install was complete and he'd kick me up to a manager to deal with.

What, in your collective opinion, would an appropriate "consideration" be? With all the parts and fees, the total was just under $1000.

For starters, the installation charge should be waived. You can grind for more if you want.

    @michaell,
Make sure they secured the dishwasher to either the underside of the counter top or cabinet sides.
For some reason after 5 or 6 years, ours started moving around when you opened it.
Turns out it wasn't attached to anything. I was able to install a screw in one side which stopped it from moving when you opened the door.

Ours took longer. First one came in one week....once we had it installed we noticed the damaged door. Took it out, had to explain I didn't do the damage, there was no benefit to me to wait for another one.
Had to wait about 10 days for them to cart the damaged one away and bring another one. BIL had to come back and install the second one. It's a Maytag and actually does a decent job, makes some weird valve sounds when working, and the racks aren't placed great....as in a Bosch, but, it seems OK.
We had to wash the dishes by hand like the Walton's used to do, for almost 3 weeks!
    What did I get........rubles (less than a cent on U.S. dollar).....nothing.
I think a gift certificate is good, for every $100 you get the store pays about $60....better all around.
If you can get $200 great, $100 would seem likely.

at best maybe waiving the install fee. I would not actually expect anything other than an apology. But if they want to offer you something, go for that.

I am hoping to dodge any more appliance purchases, but if I do have to get something will just go with the local repair guy that also sells new. No dealing with a call center and central scheduling with that!

FYI when I was talking to the repair guy this morning, he did say that if the DW went out he would recommend another kitchenaid or a Whirlpool.

I'm getting back a stupid amount of money. Not because I overpaid, but because of the Mach E credit and the selling of our rental property. Refund is almost enough to have paid for the WRX in full.

The install fee was $119 - I figure the aggravation of having to be home for 4 hours on a Saturday is worth something, as well.

I watched the install guys screw in brackets on either side of the dishwasher to the cabinets, so it shouldn't go anywhere.

hard to tell what that would actually look like installed.

when my daughter was living with her BF in the house they bought that I practically did a full cosmetic flip update on, they needed a new fridge so ordered one from HD. When the guy showed up it had gotten dented on the side panel (I assume they did it on the truck). So it ended up causing a group discussion on the driveway, and a call to the store. They negotiated an offer on the spot. They had 2 choices. Put the old piece of smelly junk with the bad door back and wait for a replacement, or take that one and get something like $100 back (it was not an expensive fridge either).

since the damage was on the side the was going to be next to the end wall, it was if not totally, close to invisible. My daughter jumped on that offer to get the new fridge immediately and some money back in her pocket.

In our first house we got a good deal on a oven range with a dent in one side; totally invisible once installed.

In our first house we got a good deal on a oven range with a dent in one side; totally invisible once installed.

When we built our first house Son #1 was a new born. Somehow we timed that perfectly. Needless to say we needed a washer. Pampers were relatively new and fairly expensive back then (1969).

Therefore, we went shopping for a washing machine. Somehow we walked by a scratch and dent washer in Penney’s on our way out of the mall one night. This thing was more than scratched and dented it was damn near destroyed on the right side as you faced the washer. The right side was caved in almost 3 inches (I measured it). I thought for sure the drum would scrape on the dent but it didn’t. It was drastically reduced (less than half price) because of the severe dent and sitting there so long, it scared off buyers with a functioning brain. The salesman told us it had the full warranty and since it sat there so long he thought his boss would take another 25 bucks off of it and they did.

The right side was completely invisible like your range when it was slid into place. That washer lasted for at least 15 years before it developed a small leak at the pump yet I was able to sell it like that for about 30 bucks and the woman that bought it was thrilled to get it because she was tired of buying Pampers.

That was the best appliance deal I ever got.

FWIW, GE made Penney’s appliances back then.

I’d ask for the install fee back. That is very fair, IMO.

Best appliance deal I got was a few years back at Home Depot. Top of the line Maytag washer/dryer in gunmetal. Retail on each machine was over $1200. They ordered two sets of floor models and had the extra set out for at a reduced price. There were a few light scratches on them so I negotiated a bit more off and ended up under $1000 for both. I borrowed a truck and took them home myself.

Hope the new owner of my old house is enjoying them. I was going to take them with me, but for whatever unknown reason my new house has an electric dryer hookup. The PO also left nearly new Samsung units.

$4.19 and $4.28 are my local Costco prices for a gallon of RUG and PUG, respectively. Those prices are relatively low compared to branded gasoline stations in my area - about 30 cents less for RUG and 40 cents less than PUG.

At these prices and expected increases of $1.00 a gallon over the next several weeks, 💰 money is being made “hand over fist” by oil producing countries and oil refineries. Summer blends of gasoline are already being refined which means increased pressure on rising gasoline prices as well.

It is my opinion that we will be paying exorbitant prices for gasoline for the rest of this year, not to mention just about all consumer and building products based upon increased transportation costs. It’s a vicious circle ⭕️ that will be affecting just about everything.

EV vehicle adoption is moving quickly, relative to the automobile market.

But, it is negligible amount of power, as far as the electricity market.

Once I bought a lawn tractor from Lowe’s and for some reason I felt lazy and paid $75 delivery fee so I didn’t have to mess with anything.

The tractor arrives, starts right up and I start mowing only to discover there were no blades on the mower!

I stormed back to Lowe’s and after causing a sufficient scene they gave me the blades off the display model and refunded the delivery fee.

The secret is to appear crazy enough to motivate them but not so crazy as to have them call the cops.

Had new Whirlpool washer and dryer, expensive upline models that are nice, installed by Lowes
near beginning of the shutdowns. A crew of 3 showed up. I don't recall all the little things, but
they did not install well. Their behavior left a lot to be desired. I can't recall just what was aggravating about their actions, but...

I ended up having to adjust the legs on the washer to stop the loose shake
on 3 legs and I had to do some adjusting on the dryer legs as well. I think they didn't install the vent pipe right.

I went back to store after a day of cooling down (me, not the weather) and talked to salesman in appliances. He told me to talk to a specific manager at the service desk. I believe I was given back
the $79 install/delivery and a $100 for aggravation. I don't recall the total bill but it was on order of $1500 or more for the two 7120 model numbers for matching washer dryer with steam.

Forgot to mention if it makes you feel any better our GE dishwasher was less than three years old when it died. Very similar to you, it wouldn’t finish the cycle and would need a power cycle to come back on. Then it finally died. I Googled it and determined it wasn’t worth fixing and went with a Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool). Old house had a Kenmore made by Whirlpool that was great too.

When I bought this house back in 2011 there was a dishwasher installed, naturally. I checked it out, it seemed to work but the rubber gasket in the front leaked. I considered ordering a new rubber gasket, but never got around to it. Living alone, and not being much of a cook, I really don't need a dishwasher. And this one serves well as storage for my few pots and pans.

I have new neighbors, renters, next door. They've been here about 2 weeks, and yesterday he brought home a washer and dryer, their first. I helped him unload, and perform the hookup. He asked if the gas dryer had a pilot light that we would have to fool with, like a gas water heater, and I assured him it didn't.

My sister in San Diego told me that gas at her local Costco was pushing $5/gal for RUG.

Gas is pushing $6+ for premium at premium gas stations in CA now. Diesel is higher than premium.

In true CCBA fashion, an empty tank is now an excuse to buy a brand new car as those come with a full fuel tank!!!

"to buy a brand new car as those come with a full fuel tank!!!" That will be the next thing the dealers scrape back.

    @kyfdx,
Electric generation is a mix, mostly natural gas, I believe.
There are quite a few adjustments to the Base Rate.

Yeah, natural gas has skyrocketed in price, this year. My gas bills are way up.
But, we get a substantial amount of our electricity from coal plants.

OK, I’ll join in on this. Went out for dinner last Saturday night in the county right next to where I live. I passed up a Sunoco station that had RUG for $4.29. When I got to my town less than 3 miles away Marathon was charging $4.39. I was driving Mrs. j’s Legacy and it had less than a 1/4 tank so I figured I better buy then rather than wait. I think PUG was almost a buck more at both stations. Not looking forward to buying gas for the Genny; it’s tank is almost full.

I filled up Monday. ConocoPhillips was 3.94 for RUG. probably more now!

Going to NY tomorrow for the weekend. Have to fill up there to get home. Going to hurt. Then when I get back Sunday.

At that point both cars will be full. Probably won’t have to buy any gas for at least a month after that!

In just over 13 months, I've put about 12k on the Explorer.
That includes 5 round trips to Ohio and back(560 miles each way) and a Michigan round trip(900 miles each way).
Other than that, I don't drive much even taking the long way to the grocery store every week.

Gas has gone up about $1/gallon in 6 days here in San Diego.

So much for the "you have to pay for what's in the tanks" excuse for why high prices remain when costs go down.

The manufacturers provide dealerships with rebates to pay for full tanks of gas upon delivery of new cars. The dealer is obligated to fill the tanks of all new cars sold.

It's on the window sticker as something you pay for, but if they can add ADM's, the weasel-bastards can do about anything.

I got my second dose of Shingrix yesterday. I had forgotten how sore your arm gets what with all the jabs I have gotten for Covid, flu, and shingles.

    Still - way worth it.

I had the same experience about a month ago. All the other shots I have gotten over the last year or so were not a big problem in that respect, but for whatever reason Shingrix #2 hurt a lot and made my arm quite sore for a couple of days.

That is common for shot #2....plus tiredness for a day or so.
They should put an outlet in our arm when we are born.....and then just pour any vaccine meds into the arm.
Also males should be given extra wire shields to prevent hernias.

Yeah, got that last Fall. Kicked my butt.

Hearing other senior citizens relating their struggles with shingles is terrifying, though.

Maybe I'm just lucky - I had my second Shingrix shot in December and had no issues.

My dad had shingles when he was 70 - the after effects were with him the rest of his life.

And a childhood friend is going through it now, in her early 60's. I'm afraid of what she's in for.

Glad to hear we're getting vaccinated.

Question - has there ever been a time where there wasn't a second shot necessary? My wife has only received one dose of the vaccine. She was surprised when I told her I was getting the booster.
