Our Whirlpool dishwasher works so well at home that we bought one for the cook8ng studio, as well.

No LG or Samsung. Got it.

It’s really a shame as the Samsung fridges are pretty nice units. Huge, flexible inside and energy efficient. The new ones should be better as they moved the ice maker to the freezer which was the biggest issue. The ice makers are so bad they fix them out of warranty due to a class action lawsuit. They did mine. It still freezes up, but no where near as bad. I chip the ice off a few times a month to keep it working.

I had an LG (Kenmore) at the old house. Got 9 trouble free years out of it before selling the house, but I’ve heard nightmares with them too.

So a long way of agreeing with your comment.

When I was in college I had very large very loud parties at my house when my parents were on trips. The thing was, my house is located over 1/2 mile from the nearest house. No complaints, no police visits. When I was a judge in juvie court I'd occasionally have a case where some kids had a party with lots of underage drinking when their parents were gone- but of course it was a house in the middle of a subdivision so the invariably the police were called. I wanted to(but never did) tell the kids I was finding them guilty- of rank stupidity-for attempting to pull off a wild party in a quiet subdivision...

and yes, lucky that it happened when we are home. was fine last night (well, probably up to the top of the sump hole, just not spilled over yet) when I was in there. and she had to go get something before breakfast. I don't want to think about how far it could have spread if we had been away for a few days.

We love Whirlpool and just bought a new side by side fridge last year as I recall. Sticks out a bit from the counter but we don't seem to mind actually, never knew there were a couple of kinds to fit into counter spaces. Only our oven/stove is original and GE...just waiting for her to go check out a new unit but have been hearing this for about a year now. We've been cooking more since the one child drops in more so think it'll be sooner than later that we replace it.

We had a sump pump go out when we were gone for a long weekend. Luckily we also had an ejector pump so the water level in the basement stayed under a quarter inch. still ruined a few things and now nothing sits on the basement floor.

Update on the AirBnB party last night. I talked to several of my neighbors today, and received new information. At least one other neighbor called the police, so that was a minimum of 2 police calls. And another neighbor told me that he saw what he believed to be strippers leaving the house late last night. I didn't ask how he knew they were strippers, but I can imagine.

Apparently this was a stag or bachelor party, complete with strippers. Which would explain the stretch limo that was trying to park in my driveway.

I did file a report on the AirBnB site, and heard back from them. An obvious attempt to prevaricate. I included the exact street address, and they sent me a list of 6 listings (url's) and asked me which one I was referring to. Each listing had pictures, but no address, WTH? Like, "Dude, you don't even know the address of your own listings?"

    About the appliances, Whirlpool.
Son and DIL are planning ahead to replace appliances in their
house where they've been for 2 years. They've looked at CR and (of course) it says
Whirlpool appliances have slightly more complaints than LG, Samsung, Bosch...

If that's true, I suspect it comes from the problem 6 or so years ago with the
refrigerators having a defective circuit board like ours. The shortage and backorders
were a big problem. Otherwise I still think Whirlpool is above
others on repairs except for Speed Queen.

But every contact with an appliance repair guy gets the recommendation to
buy Whirlpool (KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, and another brand they own). The
stories each serviceman told about some problem with getting parts or totally
unavailable parts for one of the other brands was scary.

Out Whirlpool washer dryer have been here for 5 years and perfect. The refrigerator
after the replacement of the circuit board has been perfect. My lovely bridge
did leave the freezer door not quite closed causing a major scare because of
snow in the refrig area, but that's another story. When I occasionally find the
freezer door not quite tight because of somethiing inside that's not pushed in
far enough, it still upsets her if I mention it.

DIL and son have the 8-9 year old washer dryer Whirlpool that he got when
he moved into the apartment after he finished college and started his job.

The Lowes store seems to push the other brands when I'm there looking at
various appliances just in case I need something because of a failure or
for the kids. I think the salesmen get spiffs for selling them because they
take a customer right over to an LG or Samsung first.

The strength of Whirlpool (Kitchenaid, maytag, usw.) is the availability of
    parts and ot authorized servcepeople.

Our fridge is the same as @driver100's, except it's full depth.
The loud icemaker is because the unit sits on the door and the catch
container is on the door. It's a very efficient design for conserving useable
space when I compared freezers while shopping for our side-by-side.

The refrigerator I just bought at Home Depot is an LG. We’ll see if the rumors are true. If I get 10 years out of it I’ll be beyond caring.

got to be my own "guy" again today, plumbing version. Wife went downstairs this morning to get something and I hear her yelling about the scariest word: Water. corner of the store room had a large puddle, which just happened to be right over the sump pump cover.

I did call our plumber and had a request in for an emergency visit in the afternoon (those ain't cheap!) but wanted to get some water removed before it spread to a place it would matter. So I mopped a little then waded in to yank the cover off the hole so I could start bailing. and that was in tight so took some prying, and along the way it banged into the pipe coming out, and suddenly the pump kicked on (I had already checked that it was plugged in, and flipped the breaker to make sure it wasn't that. )

so since then, it has been chugging away trying to clear out the huge backlog of water in the drain system. took a long time to drop the level below the pipes that drain into the sump hole, so now it is kicking off and on as the hole pumps out and more water keeps draining in. hopefully it eventually runs out of backed up water and goes back to normal.

at least I know the drainage system works! my assumption is the float was either corroded, or just caught on something, and banging the pipe knocked it loose. but seems to be working as designed now.

so the plumbing equivalent of smacking the old TV to make it work better!

This in a brand new house? Shouldn’t that be under warranty with the builder?

I think the warranty for something like this was 2 years. and of course probably has lots of loopholes! and since I am not the original buyer I have limited resources to go after the builder. so not going to bother.

now, if the upstairs caved in because of incorrectly installed rafters, that I would chase after!

at least 2 of the 3 intake pipes (that all dump into the sump hole) seem to have run dry. the third is still working. hopefully by bedtime that one will be done too so the pump can get a rest. and I can finally get a good look at it.

broke down and replaced the currently working sump pump. old one just did not last. typical I guess from a new build, they cheap out on stuff like that and used a low budget unit. this one seems to work hard, but it still was way rustier and crapped up than it should be this soon. Might have worked for years, but didn't want to take the chance so in went a much beefier, better built model.

The original Family Truckster is a 1979 Ford LTD Country Squire.

There is much debate on this and it could be a 1980 as well, but there have been a few actual movie ones for sale and they were listed as 79s.

Many of the replicas have used later models and they don’t look quite right. As long as they use 87 down it isn’t too bad but once they go 88-91 all bets are off

Hey all - automotive related question for everyone.

I heard from my best friend in CA - his aunt has a new-ish Prius Prime (Plug In) that has sat, unused, for over a year due to COVID. Naturally, it won't start. This could be due to a number of reasons - bad gas, flat battery, whatever.

So, any thoughts as to what he could (or should) do to help at this point?

    call AAA?

I doubt on a new car like that the gas would go bad in that time, enough to cause a no start.

the odds on choice reason IMO is a dead battery. I know they still need the 12v to start, and have jump ports, so that seems like the most logical next step. Check the owners manual of course first!

oh, and I guess, plug it in if it hasn't been?

An automotive related question? What do you think this is a car forum? We discuss appliances, parties at Airbnb's and Flecther class ships, not cars.

First thing I would do is get the battery tested and recharged if needed.

Big question is what happens when you try to start it?

I am sure you have seen this (from imcdb):

"This should be labeled as a 1980 Ford Country Squire. That is the only year it could be. I am building a replica and have learned quite a bit about them, as to do it correctly.

First to nail down the year is the drivers sail mirror. It was 79-80 only item.

Then we have the front bumper. The vents were only used in 79-80. But both 79 and 80 are unique 1 year only bumpers. In 1979 the tag was center mounted. In 1980 they moved the tag from the center to the drivers side. At Lou Glutz, the dealer tag is in the center of the bumper which is why they were identified as 79's. But look to the drivers side there is a carrage bolt filling the hole where the tag was mounted for 1980 only, there was no hole there in 79. Also in all later scenes where the front tag is not present, you can see the center of the bumper is lacking the recess and holes for the center tag mount a 79 bumper would have. In 1980 the center of the bumper is peaked as is the Trucksters bumper. None of the Truckster used the 1979 Bumpers, all were 1980 only.

The next item to confirm this is the speedometer. The one on screen was 80-81 specific.
In 79 the km/h are yellow but the Mph goes 0,10,20,30,40,50,60,70,85.
In 80 and 81 the km/h are in yellow and the Mph goes 5,15,25,35,45,55,65,75,85
In 82 on up the km/h are in blue.

The only year LTD Country Squire that came with a Sail mirror, that specific bumper and that speedometer was the 1980."

The weather in our area is predicted to turn extremely cold and windy late this week. Today I bit the bullet and put a new battery in the Wrangler; it was five years old and was cranking slow when temperatures were in the low 30s, and the last thing I wanted to do was deal with a no-start if a tree was lying across the road and or the highways are in poor shape. It's a fairly simple job, fortunately.

The diagnosis has to start with what happens when you try to start it. Does it crank? Does it turn over fast enough that it should start but doesn't?

If the car has been sitting for a year or more, it should be thoroughly checked out by a competent mechanic. At the very least, charge the battery and test it. Air up the tires, they're almost certain to be low. Change the oil, after a year there will be condensation (moisture) in the engine oil.

Once that is done, and the car starts and runs, then take it out on the highway, make sure the tires haven't flat-spotted. If they have, you'll know it.

Yes I’ve seen that. I’ve never verified his speedometer comment but the mirrors and bumper are correct. I just wonder why I’ve seen 2 or 3 that are claimed to be movie ones come up for sale as 79s. Maybe they are looking at the build date on the door tag and they are early 1980 models built in 79?

Also could be that they used a mix of 79/80 models or the interior driving shots were done in different models than many of the exterior shots.

At any rate, it’s one of the most iconic movie cars ever and with the recent popularity of Panther wagons makes for good discussion.

We’ve had a car parked in our driveway for over two years and when the battery isn’t dead starts up right away on gas that has no stabilizer in it. I’m guessing it’s an electrical problem. Possibly rodent damage unless the car was mouse proofed.

That very well could be it, I see people making the build date/model year mistake all the time on YT junkyard/auction videos. Barring original purchase paperwork from Barris, one may never know the exact year, but certainly enough data is out there to build accurate tribute cars.

I've also always thought the blue AMC Eagle they encounter in the gas station scene is the "antarctic blue super sports wagon" that Clark originally ordered.

I wonder what they would name the liquid pretreat trucks, the ones that spray the acid, salt, beets juice on the roads that attacks metal on your car.

We saw them a few days ago at the IU auditorium. They perform each year as a homecoming for the group.

    Supermarket shenanigans.

I’ve mentioned before my pet peeve about people who just leave their shopping carts blocking parking spaces and just drive off. While I have some sympathy for people who do that in handicapped spots there’s just no excuse anywhere else.

Today at the supermarket there was a car directly behind me loading groceries. I finished and brought my cart back into the store rather than use the corral. When I got back I see that the woman had just dumped her cart and the wind had blown it into the front bumper of the car next to me scratching the bumper cover. The cart corral was about 15’ away. I brought that cart back in too.

Why are people so selfish. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! 🤬🤯😤👹

Remember I opened a savings account with Vanguard at 3.5% about a week or two ago?

They sent an email today that it has increased to 3.9% Now I'm losing money slower. :#

Is that an annual yield, or the actual APR? Do you know?

I saw a good one on Hot Bench the other day. A guy says he was in an automatic car wash and the car behind him hit his car and caused $9000 worth of damage. He showed his airbag was deployed and there were scratches and dents on his car. The police seemed to believe his story when he first reported it.

However, the mother and and the daughter who was driving the car were pretty sharp. They got security video frsom the car wash and they showed the guy lied about everything, the car was damaged before it went into the car wash. It shows there was no contact between the cars. The guy was a total scammer.
