The arctic cold front has arrived here in Houston. The wind is whipping, and the temperature is falling like a rock.

    We're supposed to get a 40 degree drop overnight. It's currently about 43 F.
Now down to 21 F.. By 9 AM, it's supposed to be 9 below... :o
Yikes...and I thought it was bad in Tampa. Started out at 68 this morning, steadily going down to 50F by 5 p.m., and only a high in the high 40s for Sat and Sunday. The people here are in panic mode.

I got an email this morning re:
Dealer is located in Florida. The Chevy Volt hybrid has 70,000 miles on it.

The $26, 853.99 saved on fuel, can now be spent on a new battery.

It is supposed to be true...but I don't know!

For those who don't follow the CCBA topic, I replaced my M235i with a 2020 Mercedes-AMG C43; full details can be found here.

It may not be as fast as the BMW, but it is one great looking car....inside and out!

My sisters Prius needs a new battery (a little more that 100k but is at least a dozen years old) and the dealership quote was close to $20K. That is what is keeping me from a hybrid or fully electric vehicle.

I'm sure it would have cost less for @jmonroe1 to get a new engine put into his wife's XG350 when it broke - instead, he just got a new car.

Why wouldn't these folks do the same thing?

update on the Princess's attempt to get to Wisconsin (at least O'hare where someone will pick them up).

was looking good until late morning when they decided to cancel the flight for a "technical" problem with the plane. Of course, just a little too late to get on the 11:30 flight (which left right on time). so rebooked on a flight to Dulles and connection through to Chicago. so far, those are supposed to happen. crossing fingers.

hopefully they at least get to Dulles. a lot more flights from there to Chicago, even if it ends up being tomorrow (there were no options for that out of Albany). and if they get stranded, my sister lives 5 minutes from Dulles so they are covered!

mother nature had really bad timing this year.

I just heard that Albany was rated as the 16th worst airport in America. I guess that’s because you have to buy a ticket to get a sandwich at Chick fil A.

There is one upstart electric car company that sells the car without the battery and you just lease the battery, that way when the battery starts to go they will just swap it out for new ones.

WOW, I thought the hybrid replacement battery was 3-4 thousand bucks. She better shop around. Google and you will see what I mean. Maybe a ploy to sell her a new car.

That 29k repair estimate brought to mind this video from a couple of weeks ago. This guy has a ten year old Tesla with 300k miles. The battery was redone under warranty a few years ago. But the other repairs, including lots of suspension parts and a motor, which came to $19k. If he'd had to pay for his battery he probably would have been looking at a ten year repair total of over $40k.

latest update on the Princess travel saga (since I know you are all interested). Flight to Dulles had mechanical issues (after getting in late) so airline said no chance to make the connection at Dulles (which of course went out on time) so, rescheduled again. Luckily they managed to get them rebooked for tomorrow. Now on a 5:20 AM flight. As long as the Taxi/Uber shows up at her brother's house (where they are crashing, a lot closer to the airport) at 3:30, they should hopefully be arriving in Chicago at an absurdly early time.

thankfully, their plane finally took off from O'hare so should be arriving tonight (only 3 hours late). Having a plane on the ground that needs to be back in Chicago later in the morning is a big advantage!

Princess update. Taxi came got them to airport. A few hiccups (self induced) but waiting to board Still. Flight delayed 2.5 hours but thankfully only because flight crew got in late last night (on that plane) and had to wait our rest period). Hopefully in the air in about an hour.

11 here and we lost power at 6am, grrr. Duke site says could be afternoon before it is restored. Manually opened garage door as wife on a mission to get coffee.

Thankfully power back on. Temp dropped in the house from 70 to 55. Seems Duke is doing a rolling outage due to high demand. Hope it doesn’t happen again as a lot of cooking is scheduled for today. Hope everyone stays safe and warm. Happy Holidays!

41 here now and even wearing a long sleeve pull over under my work shirt which I can always take off later. Instead of using the heat, we've got a couple of little heater boxes to keep a small area warm, using the heat really sucks the amount of electricity used which ratches up the monthly power bill. Got a Columbia jacket to wear and a hat, showered last night instead of this morning so the hair is a mess...bed head!

Don't they always? I swear I first heard that term used in the early '90s and now it seems to occur every few months. They love to over-hype weather.

Here we had the same thing happen yet again yesterday, lots of scare stories about the massive storm that was bearing down on us, predictions of property damage, power outages, impending doom, etc from the weather fear types as they are wont to do. We got a bit of wind (30mph) and some rain (not consistent, just short periods of heavy rain interrupted by nothing at all). Temperatures were in the mid-50s before cooling off today bit still above freezing. I keep hoping the media will wise up and start rebuilding their credibility on weather reporting, but the public seems to like being scared by them and just lap it up. What's worse is that the govt weather office has bought into it as well.

I remember being in Tampa for the holidays years ago and the temperature went down to the upper 40s overnight. I went out to the car wearing a wind breaker and found some locals in ski parkas and gloves complaining about how they wouldn’t survive this disaster.

The way the media handles winter weather is seriously a joke. They overhype it and state the obvious over and over.

I'm afraid that someday it will be like the boy who cried wolf. There will indeed be something truly dangerous in store and people will be so desensitized to their reporting that most will ignore it.

Yup. We discussed this at some point in the summer with all the tornado warnings. After the first few times, at which I kept saying “we’ve never had a dangerous tornado in my life,” but we gathered kids and animals in the basement, I stopped paying attention. My wife still panics a little, but the kids usually follow my lead and would say “eh, maybe after I finish my game I’ll mosey to the basement.”

It's called the Plainfield syndrome named after Plainfield IL which had a devastating tornado in 1990 where warning went out after the tornados struck. It basically states that it's better to give out more warnings and be wrong than to not give the warnings and be wrong. Some say that in Plainfield they hesitated in giving out the warnings due to criticism for giving out too many warnings.

    In short you can't win.

I got an email this morning re:
Dealer is located in Florida. The Chevy Volt hybrid has 70,000 miles on it.

The $26, 853.99 saved on fuel, can now be spent on a new battery.

It is supposed to be true...but I don't know!

    https://www.besthybridbatteries.com/products/chevy-volt-2016-2020-hybrid-battery

lI checked for the part number online and this is a remanufactured DIY install at nominal $7000
with option for a white glove installation at a specified shop in area for $3-500.
Apparently the replacement is a DIY process with careful instructions
they include. I'm sure most of the instructions is making all the wiring
safe for working on the battery.

For once, snopes has a reasonably well done fact check

High utility bills are just part of Dec-Feb and June-Sept where I live.

Right now it’s our food bill that has me concerned, lol. Hosting both Xmas Eve and Dinner on Sunday I we’ve dropped over $1000 on food and drink.

That sounds like you’re wasting too much money on food. :o
