I got an email this morning re:
Dealer is located in Florida. The Chevy Volt hybrid has 70,000 miles on it.

The $26, 853.99 saved on fuel, can now be spent on a new battery.

It is supposed to be true...but I don't know!

    https://www.besthybridbatteries.com/products/chevy-volt-2016-2020-hybrid-battery

lI checked for the part number online and this is a remanufactured DIY install at nominal $7000
with option for a white glove installation at a specified shop in area for $3-500.

For once, snopes has a reasonably well done fact check

Great detective work. But there is still a lesson to be learned about this kind of new technology, it can get dated quickly, it can be expensive to repair, things can easily go wrong.

The way the media handles winter weather is seriously a joke. They overhype it and state the obvious over and over.

I'm afraid that someday it will be like the boy who cried wolf. There will indeed be something truly dangerous in store and people will be so desensitized to their reporting that most will ignore it.

I agree. However, I have to give them credit because their predictions are a lot better than they used to be (not 100% better but better) but they don’t have to harp on it. I’m tired of seeing 3 segments of weather in a 30 minute news cast.

No surprises here, typical New England stuff: yesterday 55 degrees, this morning 14. Kept the heat on the last couple of days, just in case of power outage, but luckily none for us.
Went out to grab a pizza to enjoy as the expected Pats drubbing plays out. Not as crowded as I thought the world would be,, just threw on an extra layer, no issues.
Pats actually exceeding my expectations, they got a couple of first downs! Such a fall from grace.

Wasn't that true of pretty much every technology, at one point?

I mean, we aren't using horse drawn carriages any more, are we?

I remember when my dad bought our first pocket calculator - I think it was around $100 back in the 70's.

Apparently the replacement is a DIY process with careful instructions
they include. I'm sure most of the instructions is making all the wiring
safe for working on the battery.

There is a time when you have to pull the trigger and go with it....you have to do that these days with computers, phones, TVs etc......but IMHO not with EVs yet.
I bought a pocket calculator when they first came out, it cost $40 which would be like $200 today, and all it did was add, subtract and multiply. Probably bought it too soon, if I waited 50 years I could buy one for $5, and it would do a lot more.

The first pocket calculator I saw in person was bought by one of my coworkers back in the 70s, and as I recall he paid closer to $200 than $100.

If you have a smartphone, you already have a very powerful pocket calculator. And if the calculator that comes with the phone (Android or iOS) isn't powerful enough, you can easily download very powerful scientific calculators. Just as you can pay a lot of money for a standalone OBD II scan code reader, or just buy a bluetooth attachment ($12) and download free (or very low cost) software on your smartphone.

You didn’t have to wait 50 years, I remember getting one in 1977 that only cost $5.

Impressed with the performance on snowy and icy roads today with the new CrossClimate2 tires on my wife's CR-V. Temperature was about 10 degrees when we were on the alternately packed and slushy roads. Even backed out of our icy driveway without drama. These tires also are good with wet roads and in dry conditions, as shown in a Tire Rack 2-minute video. Below that an Uber driver who has 50k on his CC2 tires, and they look like they still have a lot of life left. Finally, there's a Michelin-sponsored test on whether a worn CC2 can be as good as a new budget tire.

I did use algebra and trig in my work, and even on rare occasions some calculus. But I really used Fibonacci Trees and other balanced binary trees more than calculus. Things that I didn't learn in school, but were very necessary in my line of work.

That 4.6L had to be one of the best Ford ever made. I wonder why they couldn’t throw a turbo on it to get the horsepower needed to stay competitive.

Let me turn that around. At least Chicago has a baseball team. Here in the Burgh we haven’t had one of those for so long I don’t know if anyone other than me is still alive when that happened last around here.

I’ll have you know that I only own one rusted out hooptie which is why I am so determined not to own any more.

I was going to suggest that stickguy bring a shovel and a bucket to take some of that excess salt home for his own driveway.

Years ago something must have crapped out on the plow/salt spreader truck the borough sent around because there were more than the usual number of small piles of salt on the streets in my hood. I remember seeing a guy with a pickup shoveling the piles of salt into it. At first I thought it was a truck the borough sent out but I was wrong. When I passed the pickup it said something like, “Ralph’s Snow Removal Service”. I doubt they could nab him for stealing because he was actually providing a service. :o

Well, we’re probably halfway there but I doubt I’ll be able to call you when it happens. If you can stick around for the remaining half I’ll have one of my grandsons call you when it’s time to celebrate that occasion.

I had the non supercharged version in my Mark VIII. That’s the reason I admire the engine but those terminators were very expensive hand built I think. I was wondering how it would perform with a modern turbo.

2017 Ford Ecoboost 1.5 engine failure at 30,000 miles. Past 5 year warranty. Cost to repair engine—$6300. Eventually Ford paid for the entire repair.

This site seemed to be pretty honest about an estimate to replace a Prius battery:
Generally, you’ll be looking at about $2,400 - $2,700 for a new Prius battery pack excluding labor costs. With parts and labor costs included, you should expect price ranges going as high as $5,000 or more.

    Note the; "or more".

The other Prius was a rare older model.

LOL. He just turned 5 and it's amazing how smart kids that age are now compared to us, or to me anyway, at that age.
