My Golf has the 1.8 TSI turbo engine and it has that annoying turbo lag. Get around it b shifting into "S" mode when at a stop light. No more turbo lag though it does hold the higher rpm's longer down the road. I eventually go back into "D" mode and all is fine. I have found on some runs down I-75, I've gotten up to 40 mpg's using unleaded regular petrol. I change the oil every 8K miles or once a year, I no longer drive 13K/year since I changed jobs three years ago. Since the pandemic, I've been doing maybe 2K/year as I just don't drive much anymore.

We replaced our family room t v last January and went with a Sony 55" unit which has exceptional color. Only issue was that it didn't fit on the old entertainment stand. Didn't know what to do but our middle kid did. She went on over to some box store and came back with a new entertainment stand, found a guy on Takl and within 3 hours, we were up & running! Was amazed how she analyzed the situation & found a workable solution. Really proved to me how grown up she had become & I was very proud of her.
Was looking at a 50" Samsung at first for a lower price but the sales guy at Best Buy walked us over to the Sony set and showed me the better picture & what I'd be getting for the extra price. It was definitely more than I wanted to spend but even my kid agreed with the sales guy and just told me "to go for it...you won't be sorry". And you know what? They were both right as we've never regretted the larger size & better picture once yet. Spending the extra $ was the right thing to do and best part is the color is so real & vivid, we've never had to touch the setting yet!

No one has ever said the words… “I wish I bought the smaller TV”

I have a 65” in our family room. It is a large space that includes the kitchen and morning room. It’s too small, but it was only a few months old when we moved in so I went with it. If any of the other TVs go, I’ll replace it with an 85” and move that one to replace the broken one.

junk mail people are clever. when we moved, I did put in a forwarding address for me and the wife. Looks like a lot of places mine the post office records to find you even if you don't give them the new address. But the interesting part is we quickly started getting junk mail in both of my kids names. Our daughter at least lived there not too long ago, and largely did not ever change her legal address (she moved way too often for that!) or driver's license. Our son though moved out of state in 2014 and changed everything back then.

It's amazing how fundraisers find people. I went to a college in Florida for only one year in 1973/74. I obviously lived with at my parents' address in NY back then. I live in Vermont now. Somehow, I've been getting alumni mail recently. How and why did they find me???

Hey, Sandman, let me pick your brain for a bit. You have models from two of the manufacturers I am looking at as a possible 2nd rig. One of the cars I'm looking at is a 2005 Audi TT. I hear they're known for electrical problems and that's not good. How is your 2015 Audi A3 for reliabilty? Man, I love that TT's design. Just the right size, at certain angles the car looks bigger. Overall it's plenty large for a small German sports car. I have my eye on a red one that appears to have immaculate paint and IIR about 155,000 miles on it. 5 weeks on the FB Marketplace. $5,500 OBO or trades.

2005 Audi TT in that glistening red - man I love that red - a sports car looks great in red

The other one I'm really getting excited about is a 2006 VW Jetta with just north of 120,000 miles of smiles on it. Selling for $4,500. That's my sweet spot - $4,500. The TT above is listed at $5,500 but he'll take best offers and I don't think anybody's offered him anything.

2006 VW Jetta in black paint

I love how VW designed this Jetta iteration. It almost looks like they're shooting for the look of a fancy touring sedan, but yet the car still retains an obvious sporting feel to it. This black Jetta has only 120,166 miles on it. It's a short flight away to Denver from El Paso. I've put this Jetta at the top of a list of 5 cars. One is that VW Cabriolet up in Las Vegas. I found a flight on the Hopper app for only $89 to Vegas, baby! But now I am looking for the cheapest flight to Denver.

What are your thoughts, guys? Anyone feel like a Jetta would be a good car? Any issues come to your mind(s) about the car? Like any incessant flakiness with it's electricals? I seem to love German cars these January days. Good ta chat with you again, Sandman. Are you fully completely retired now? I am loving the retired life. I thank God pert-near daily for that fact that Mrs. iluv and I are retired.

Just buy the TT since the top goes down. Buying an old mid sized sedan for a toy seems odd.

If you don’t like it sell it. Price is cheap enough.

Time to get off the pot!

Especially if it's a sanikan on a long trail within the city. Taking too long on the pot should be a misdemeanor. Thanks for that advice, stickguy, I love that TT!

Speaking of mail delivery for the previous occupant, I have been in the present house for 11.5 years, and before that the house was empty for 2 years (foreclosure), so 13.5 years since the previous occupant lived here. But I still get mail for the previous occupants. About 3 years ago, there was a notice of an arrest warrant from Dallas County. And last year, a bill from an emergency clinic for a little over $7k. And that emergency room visit occurred last year, 2022. Strange world.

I sometimes get mail for the lady who lives one street over, same street number, different street name. When that first started happening, I would write "WRONG ADDRESS" on the mail and stick it back in the box. Then one day I was talking to this lady, and made a joke about some of her mail coming to me. She didn't know what I was talking about, said she had never received any mail with those words on the outside.

After that, I started walking her mail over to her. It doesn't happen that often, so not a big deal, but you get a very bad feeling thinking that the mailperson is throwing away mail.

Knock on the door. Find two gentlemen from Geek Squad standing there, and one of them says "Michael?".

    "Yep, that's me"

"We've got your new TV here to be installed. Can you show me where you'd like it?"

"Uh, I didn't order a TV" (granted, on her days away from the studio, my wife is trying to watch the entirety of Netflix, one show at a time, but we hadn't talked about this)

He pulls out his cell phone, studies it for a moment, and says "Michael (last name that isn't mine)?"

"Nope, that was the previous owner of the house; he moved out of state"

"Guess that explains why he isn't answering his phone. If you hadn't said anything, you'd have gotten a new TV!"

    "What size?"

    "65 inches, OLED. Nice TV."

"Well, once you figured out I wasn't the person who was supposed to receive it, you'd come back for it"

    "OK, have a nice day."

I'm sure there are some in this group who would have advised that I keep my mouth shut, but I'm not wired that way.

How long have you lived there that something purchased by a previous owner gets delivered to you?

In other news I washed my car today. It’s one that sleeps for the winter and I forgot to cover it up when parked. It had a thick layer of dust on it. I took advantage of the 40 degree heatwave and did it myself.
Every few months I'll get a piece of mail for one of the former owners.

We'll have been in this house 5 years this coming May.
We have been here for 11 years and the former owner gets more mail than we do.

Our mail people are pretty awful, frankly.
I get wrong deliveries all the time and there is nothing they'll do about it. I've tried sticking it in the box to forward or return to sender, they'll take it away and then bring it right back the next day. We've even received a couple of packages. I tried returning to sender since the recipient no longer lives here. They won't take it or send it back. Only found out what was in it after 6 mos or so of this back and forth that I finally said "well, guess it must be ours." It was nothing we wanted, of course; some kind of make your own artsy xmas ornaments or something like that. A similar package of weird stuff came each year for the first 3 or 4 years we were here.

another weird weather day today up here in snow country. hit about 47 and not windy, so I took advantage to give the Maverick its 2nd hand wash in the last week. had it out yesterday and roads were still wet so it got a lot of dirty spray up the sides. But, now nice and clean again. Hopefully any rain overnight clears out so the roads are dry by Friday evening so we can go out to dinner!

    I haven't bought anything at Walmart in over a year, but today I got a notice that I bought this item for $216 on my credit card....which they have the number of it;
Camco Rhino Heavy Duty 28 Gallon Portable RV Waste Holding Tank with Hose and Accessories - Durable Leak Free and Odorless RV Tote Tank (39004)
    Walmart
    Ordered from
    Walmart
    Items
Camco Rhino Heavy Duty 28 Gallon Portable RV Waste Holding Tank with Hose and Accessories - Durable Leak Free and Odorless RV Tote Tank (39004)

I don't know what this item is for and as far as I know I don't need one. It was sold to a lady in another town. The bank statement says the deal is pending verification of my card.

I phoned the credit card company and they won't do anything unless the fraud is actually committed....that is the deal goes through.

My point is, wouldn't it be better to be proactive, find out what went wrong and make sure the transaction doesn't actually go through.

We have a very good USPS carrier.

    Life changes suck, though.

In 2006, I took over guardianship of my mother, and she went into a nursing home. Passed away in 2010, and now we rarely get mail for her. (finally)

But, my uncle went into a nursing home in May, and I had his address changed to mine. So, here comes all the junk mail, again. Not just for him, but for his 2nd wife, who died in 2017. He passed away in October, and we'll probably get mail for another ten years.

.................oh, and I forgot, the guy who still gets mail here was in prison at the time and he died in there a few years ago, and he gets more mail than we do. Most is from car dealers and from charities. I didn't want have it forwarded to Folsom Prison or whatever prison it was, so I sent it back to the sender - address unknown.

I, the only issue with our Audi is that it drinks some oil in between changes. Not sure where it's going as the leaks in the garage are no more. It's a very pleasant vehicle to own as is my Golf. It's only issue is the turbo lag on take off. As much as I do want a new vehicle, I can't do it right now. Everything I've driven is nice but, I'm happiest behind the wheel of my Golf. Working at Enterprise scratches that new car itch right now, so at least for now, the stable is staying as it is. I'm about ready to retire again but the other half isn't. Since I really do like my Enterprise gig, current plan is to eventually, go down to 2-days a week before I stop for good. As long as we're still living here, I'll just stay. If we do move to Orlando in a few years, just might retire again.
We also have the same mail issue as many of y'all do, happened on Tuesday again. The next street over also has a "6472" on it so we get their mail on a regular basis. Tuesday night, I put their letter back in our box with the flag up and it was gone on Wednesday, hoping she re-delivered it. The person who lives there is or was also a postal worker so we'd swap mail whenever there was a screw up & just laugh it off. Especially during tax season, it sucks when we get mis-delivered mail as my wife needs the stuff her clients send her for their taxes. I always tried my hardest to not make mistakes...let's be honest, no one is perfect & I'm sure I did make some mistakes but I tried very hard not to. I cared about my customers and always tried my upmost to just do my job. But, I was lucky as I really did like being a mailman especially once I got my condo route. My customers were wonderful folks and treated me very nicely no matter what. I would always joke with them and would help out when necessary. I even went to some parties & funerals as I felt very close to many of them truth be told. They were like my grandparents!

Oh I bet it has been said many times, especially when trying to get it upstairs or putting it in the spot that you thought was bigger than it actually was.

    been there, done that!

the one I just got was measured in the store to make sure it would fit on top of the dresser (on the feet, not wall mounted) and not hang off too far and block the hallway.

also an issue if you have a wall unit or built in space for it that defines workable dimensons.

I'd take that (if a stick).

Tried reverse image search but couldn't find it. lol. Hope it isn't a scam. And did you actually drive it to make that claim? Or are you taking the seller's word for it?

Most scammers take the pictures of the cars they are supposedly selling off the internet so if you can't find that picture it's a good chance that it's not a scam, but not 100%.

My mom did that for her father when he went in a nursing home. A few months after he died my mom received a letter addressed to my grandfather from social security basically asking him if he was indeed dead.

Our mail isn’t bad as we have cluster boxes, but our Walmart, Amazon and other deliveries are horrendous. Just the other day I drove the development looking for our Hello Fresh order.

Canada Post switched us to one of those (officially known as community mailboxes here) and I get mail for other folks all the time. It’s hard to understand.

“ the only issue with our Audi is that it drinks some oil in between changes.”

Funny you mention that. Today while stopped for a coffee break in the Adirondacks we saw an frail elderly man and (I presume) his middle aged daughter trying to lift up the hood of their VW. We decided to help. She said her oil light had come on and when we checked there was nothing on the dipstick. We put some oil in for her and told her she should get it looked at.

Are VW products noted for drinking oil?

    Interesting morning at Casa michaell

Our poster buddy wouldn’t have done that.

But a big screen tv isn’t mail. I still get mail for my father who died in 2001.
That reminds me that my father who lived in Nashville, TN started getting mail addressed to someone with his name who coincidently lived in Nashville, IL. I do believe that the increasing use of Zip Codes solved that issue.

The guy selling the Porsche Boxster says "runs fine I just need the room." The car has been in there for 17 weeks.

I'd be over my head maintenance-wise with the Boxster, but I love that color and yes, stick, it has the tan interior.

Agreed. And there have been more than a few lies told when buying a new car. Unfortunately, if you don’t know the answer you’re prey so you better not ask the predator for the answer.

Good old fashioned research is still the best way to get the truth and even that has to be done carefully.

In my experience, which is far from universal, the quality of the mail service is inversely proportional to the population density. Every time I have lived in a small town or a rural area, the mail service was exemplary. As Sandman was saying (up above), the people get to know each other, and treat each other with respect and people tend to care about their job and their reputation.

In the big city, no one knows you, no one cares about you, and no one seems to be motivated to do a good job.

A car can “drive great” and still be a mess.

Years back when I had my 79 Continental beater is a perfect example. From the behind the driver’s seat it rode like a cloud and spit out ice cubes from the AC. Everything else about the car was a disaster including an engine that had no oil pressure at idle.

The '98 Porsche Boxster does have a black interior, not tan. And it has 106,000 miles on the clock-ahh-meta.

I would say that the work load has a lot to do with it. A rural carrier will likely have a lot fewer homes to deliver to than someone in a major city or suburb. A heavier workload will result in more errors.

Due to the rapid growth of our area, the Post Office employees and carriers are over worked. It is not uncommon for us to get our mail as late as 8-9pm. And the post office trucks are rattle traps with peeling paint and ready for the scrap yard. I really feel for the Post Office folks.

that Boxster also has the typical roof pull (you can see where it is out of the frame). JRGo just worked on one of these and did a DIY fix on that which looked really tedious to do (but much cheaper than having the roof replaced!)
