I see people who are constantly staring at their phones or pecking at them and wonder WTH they are doing that is so important. I guess it is like the people I see who are wearing headphones or earbuds when they are out and cannot understand why they feel the need to listen to something when they are grocery shopping or whatever. I can understand listening when you are out for exercise, walking or running, but don't get doing it every single time.

Some people keep an earbud in even if they are not listening to anything just incase someone calls they can answer the phone and use the earbud for the call.

IMO most remodels are way overpriced. Can get bug changes for a lot less money with some smart decisions.

Even do, $75k is really hard to fiend unless you are building an addition for it!

We just had a quote for a “cheap” reface at the shore house. New doors, sand and paint frames, granite counters and new sink.

Just over 16K. Kitchen is pretty small about 12x10 with a small peninsula.

Probably gonna wait on it as there are other things we want to do there too and there is wrong with it, we just don’t like the color.

As for the data usage. My truck has wireless CarPlay so it connects automatically and I always have WAZE up and I stream Apple Music at lossless quality. I’m sure that has a lot to do with it.

I’m usually connected to WiFi in the house

I still have lots of friends I used to work with in the automotive industry and we keep in touch regularly. The reason I bring this up is because I've seen several posts here regarding continued lack of inventory of new vehicles on dealer lots. So I decided to make 4 or 5 calls to friends of mine who manage local dealerships or who work in sales to ask them about new car inventories at their dealerships.

My close friend at the Lexus dealership told me that they have about half the new car inventory they had 12 months ago, but that there is still a nice selection of new vehicles, especially SUV's. Sedans and coupes are not as plentiful. Sales are down significantly, however he told me that sales personnel are earning a nice living due to the fact that most sales are at MSRP.

My friend at the Infinity dealership tells me that inventories on SUV's are excellent, but that inventories on sedans and coupes are very low with no expected increase in deliveries in the near future. Many vehicles are at the port awaiting headers with microprocessors needed for specific safety features. Sales are off significantly however he, too, said they are pricing their new cars at MSRP or slightly above depending on specific models.

My friend at Cadillac said that they have inventories that are about 1/2 of what they were accustomed to 12-18 months ago. He further stated that they will discount a new vehicle several hundred dollars, but that had to be approved by the General Sales Manager. He told me that their biggest problem is an overabundance of used cars and SUV's. Most are sent to the auction - they keep only the creme de la creme vehicles on their used car lot.

So it would seem that things are about the same at each of the above dealerships I checked with - lower inventories with no expected increases in the foreseeable future and pricing at or slightly above MSRP. I did ask my friends which options buyers/lessees are choosing and they said that leasing is outpacing purchasing.

I sure wouldn't want to be in the market for a new car now with interest rates going up and selection availability being scarce (color, options, etc.).

In driving around the LA area yesterday. All the dealerships here seemed to have plenty of inventory. It was a view from the highway so I couldn’t tell if they were used or new.

This is mostly for @oldfarmer50. Friends flew up from Atlanta on Tuesday night and wanted to experience winter, which just showed up after too many warm days. They reserved a car from Enterprise and were expecting a small SUV. They ended up with an Audi A5 with the Sportline trim. Not exactly an SUV even though it has AWD. Is that an upgrade from a small SUV?
Fortunately they made it up to VT before the snow storm. It is so low that it bottomed out on a dip on my driveway. They are going up to ski today at Smuggs today. Fingers crossed that they make it OK. They've never skied or driven on snowy roads!

Before they left you should have installed chains for their trip. When the got back I hope you had extra heating pads and hot water bottle’s for their aches and pains. You know, Northern Hospitality.

    jmonroe
Rt. 108 where Smuggler’s Notch is located is pretty well maintained by Vermont in the winter so chains might not be necessary there. The warm up equipment would be a must because the temperatures on that mountain must be around zero right now. That’s a tough introduction to winter for somebody from Atlanta.

I'm so glad this house had nice cabinets when I bought it (house had a thorough remodel in 2005, white cabinets instead of a then-popular dark heavy-handed Tuscan theme etc, and owners were older so everything was immaculate). I replaced the hardware (I believe under $100), new counters (a little over $3K IIRC and I was able to save the existing backsplash), sink, and appliances - it looks fresh and one might think the whole thing is new. Luck was on my side.

Our Tracfones use WiFi at home and at certain places away from home where they connect to wifi (like ChickFilA) instead of using data.
Data only is used for pictures if I understand it right when texting at home with WiFi.

My wife thinks that she should be able to use the phone in the car wandering the internet just like at home.

One of our local cable companies has tried to get folks to sign up for their wireless phone service. If I understand it right, that phone service uses your home WiFi from them for the phone service while at home. That reduces their cost from the wireless carrier.

I'm hearing of wireless providers here, like Mint, that I've never heard of before.

Big problem with Tracfone before Verizon took over was the customer service was Mexico based and in Miami. I had a tough time understanding some of the people. Only worse customer service was Frontier landline telephone company, who also provides cable television in some areas.

last remodel I did was in 2011 and that was a full gut and redo. moved stuff around a bit too so not plug and play. all custom built (Amish people FTW) cabinets (tall ones, fancy mouldings, all that stuff). Kept the fridge and stove, but all new tile floors and granite. All that was not even 1/2 of that estimate.

thankfully the house we just bought was less than 2 YO. I should be dead before needing to consider redoing the kitchen here! But if I did, would do a repaint spit and polish (new knobs and counter tops) and call it a day.

The only time you will see me staring at a smartphone is when I get stuck waiting somewhere and don't have any other reading material. I try to always carry a book (or Kindle) with me when I expect to get stuck in a waiting room (doctor, dentist, etc), but sometimes I get caught unprepared. Most recently, when I was waiting at the dealership to see the finance guy to finish up the purchase of my new truck. Fortunately, that was only about a 15 minute wait, but I had nothing else to read so I was catching up on the news via my smartphone.

I can remember, and it wasn't that long ago, most places would have newspapers and magazines available. I guess Covid killed that. Permanently, it would seem.

forget kitchens, fences are silly expensive now too. Probably more so the labor. we want to do just the back yard (not a very big area, and one side already is fenced courtesy of our neighbors). The quotes are like double what I would have expected, though I probably underestimated materials cost (based on shopping at Lowe's or fences online place). Labor though ends up being more than the cost of the pieces. Pretty good take home for a job that likely takes less than a day to whip through.

we thought about tackling it ourselves but realized that would probably be a dumb idea. maybe if it was flat but we have some decent slopes to deal with and tricky spots (not for a pro but for incompetent DIYers).

Are we talking about a common everyday wooden privacy fence, 6', with 3 cross members? I redid all 3 sides of my back yard a few years ago, including new gates -- I like to have a gate into the back yard on both sides of the house. More recently, last year the neighbor on my immediate north side wanted to replace her wooden fence. The shared fence line had already been done by me, but the fence on the far side was falling down. A local contractor had quoted her an outrageous price, and she asked if I knew anyone more reasonable. I stepped up and offered to take care of the job. I hauled all of the materials from Home Depot in my truck, and paid a couple of the local characters to do the heavy lifting. I had to supervise the initial part of the job until they were comfortable with the routine, and then I had to show them how to build and hang a gate.

The materials cost way more than the labor, this was during the period when pressure treated 2x4's were going for around $9 each. The job took about 2 days, although spread out a little more, and I gave the helpers $250 each, and didn't charge for my time.

Lately, I have been seeing more of the horizontal wooden fences, and I must say I like the way they look.

The deals seemed to be on 4 banger base Macans so I didn’t pursue. There are a few S but then you start looking at Cayenne and the body is changing next year.

Closest dealer is probably 1 hour and 15-30 away too

We have 3 phones on a 6 gig data plan with rollover at AT&T with unlimited talk & text for $123.00. We have auto pay now plus a couple of discounts. A few months ago I tried to save a few bucks and get an unlimited plan for it all. Let's just say I was not told the truth and our bill went up to just over $200! I said, "no way", and was able to get a nice lady on the phone to get our old plan back with both discounts re-instated plus a credit for each of the 3 lines. Next bill came & we only owed like $29.00 so seems like we're back to where we started. The auto pay I don't mind as it saves writing a check. What pissed me off was being not told the whole truth by four folks I spoke with, some in person...some on the phone, and that what they all promised was just b-s.
As much as I'd like unlimited data, am just being careful now so we don't go over the 6 gigs. The only month we did go over was when we had the unlimited. And I was on the phone in the chase van, a lot. Eventually I want to switch over to T-Mobile or Mint but right now, the girls are happy with AT&T, so I'll stay awhile longer. And at work, I have to have a smart phone with GPS, no questions asked. Today, I did see a sign at Metro PC about a $25/line plan so will look into that also. For that price, I'll make sure we all switch if it's true!

I’m actually looking into a company that will make the doors and then you paint the frames and install the doors yourself. I just don’t always have the time. Nothing gets done at the shore between Memorial Day and the last beach day in Sept. The season is too short to be tied up with home improvements

repainting and changing hardware in the kitchen, that I can handle. Much easier though to have a pro spray them. For a short place, I would go the cheap route!

I do know from experience that moving plumbing and opening walls can blow up the budget quickly. Keeping the footprint and just doing a remove and replace is always going to be cheaper. As is going with stock cabinets instead of full custom. But, sometimes the boss wants what the boss wants!

I get a kick out of the remodel shows. People on some high drama budget, what has to get cut, etc. Then at the end they show the product and the $2,500 pot filler and $5,000 sink with a $1,500 faucet.

That and commercial ranges for $10,000 instead of a nice residential equivalent for 1/4 the price.

I also have become a fan of the LVP flooring instead of tile. Some of those are hard to tell they aren't tile or wood.

Just read that Carvana lost $2.9 billion last year and are sending a lot of inventory directly to auction. Evidently they make more money on the financing and if they can’t sell their cars they make no money on the financing.

sat down before dinner since it was snowing outside again and proofed the taxes I did last week. Sadly all my inputs were correct and no more deductions were to be found. So broke down and filed them. That is going to be a nasty auto debit coming out in mid-April! Oh well, I had the money for a year instead of them so still ahead of the game.

Just glad to have them all done and out of my hair.

the wife mentioned a stockade type (not so we couldn't see out, but so neighbors couldn't see in, but largely so the nutty dog could not see things to bark at). I shot that idea down. Going to be (if we do it) a nice aluminum architectural style with skinny spokes and easy to see through.

literally only putting one up so when we have the dog I can send him out the door to do his business without having to go out with him, and when he is antsy can take him out and let him zoom around. If he did not come visit I would not bother with one.

I just need them to hurry up and finish processing my deal and come pick it up before they run out of money.

I assumed all along too that their business model was essentially BHPH. They were making serious money on the financing side. if you go and shop on the site, they give you very easy to select financing options which I imagine most buyers take, since it fits the "click here and we drop your car off" model.

the wife mentioned a stockade type (not so we couldn't see out, but so neighbors couldn't see in, but largely so the nutty dog could not see things to bark at).

There’s a kind of white plastic fence that’s become popular around here that might be cheaper than aluminum. Most of the fence companies carry it and probably some of the big box stores too. Up off exit 12 of the Northway there’s an old horse farm that used miles of it in a rail style. It’s held up more or less intact for about 30 years.

I’d be willing to bet that if you did it yourself you wouldn’t even spend one fourth that much. But then you’d be in your kitchen rather than at the beach. Decisions, decisions.

    jmonroe

I’m actually looking into a company that will make the doors and then you paint the frames and install the doors yourself. I just don’t always have the time. Nothing gets done at the shore between Memorial Day and the last beach day in Sept. The season is too short to be tied up with home improvements

    ————————————————
A few years ago (before Covid hit) I looked at a couple companies online about having doors and drawer fronts made for our kitchen. They will cut the doors to your dimensions within 1/16 of an inch and the same for the drawer fronts. They will also drill the holes for the door hinges. You can also buy new hinges if you want or reuse what you have. In the end what you’ll have is a custom made kit for updating your kitchen.

I even called and spoke to a couple places getting some details about how to go about ordering from them. As it turned out while we were nit-picking the countless door styles to choose from and the finish we wanted, Covid hit and all of the places shut down. So that ended that. When I get in the mood again I’ll look into it. What will be eye watering is I still have the prices for a few of the finalist we were considering. But as we all know, when you snooze you lose and I’ll be a big loser as far as the price goes.

As for not having time, there will have to be a few weekends when the weather doesn’t permit going to the beach. So, those can be the weekends for doing the kitchen makeover. Maybe you’re just looking for excuses. :o

forget kitchens, fences are silly expensive now too.

We had a white plastic fence; it was a mess; it looked dingy after about a year or so and also started to crack after about 5 years. We replaced it with powder coated aluminum fencing.

Our taxes are the ones my wife always does last, it's what ends the tax season for her on April 15th so to speak. Never see our refund since it gets paid forward towards her quarterly taxes. But after all these years, am used to all this & just go with the flow. Have no issue paying our fair share of taxes as when was makes money, one must be prepared to pay the taxes on it...just another part of lifeI guess! Just happy we can afford to pay them.

I am not a fan of the white vinyl for that reason and my wife hates it. so that is out. We have family with 20 year old black aluminum that looks new, and they are on a wind tunnel hill with harsh conditions on anything outside. we are definitely going with that. Doesn't hurt that it is actually cheaper than the vinyl options.

Rt. 108 where Smuggler’s Notch is located is pretty well maintained by Vermont in the winter so chains might not be necessary there. The warm up equipment would be a must because the temperatures on that mountain must be around zero right now. That’s a tough introduction to winter for somebody from Atlanta.
Route 108 from Jeffersonville is pretty much up hill to Smuggs. The rental Audi A5 made it with the all season tires. They returned their rental yesterday and we toured Burlington. It snowed all day and the roads were covered, but we have snow tires. Not slushy since it never got above 15 degrees.

that is the current plan. Downside, every time he needs to go out I have to be on the other end of it. and if he wants to run (which he does) I have to run with him!

    They just keep trying.

I got an email today supposedly from Apple (different address in the header) telling me that my iCloud account was full. All I needed to do was provide my CC info to get 5GB in additional storage.

The thing is, I don’t use any cloud storage. Never did.

You have to admire their tenacity.

I let my Thunderbird filter out the spam messages. I check spam maybe once a week, quickly scrolling through the tag lines to see if there is something I should look at before deleting. If spam slips through I can train my TBird by marking the spam. It's filtering and unfiltering abilities are beyond my abilities to understand and use fully. But it's drastically reduced the frustration of spam.

It helps that I changed email addresses in last March or so because my past provider of email service was changing business model and dropping the email they had provided to Dayton and beyond payees. So much spam is still going to the dead email address.
