2 states and rental "business." I was hating on taxact this time around because it kept telling me "oh, you want to do THAT? That'll cost you more!" By the time I got to the end, it charged me over $200 ... to do my own taxes. hmmmm....
Since I don't want to do it all again, I just paid it. Got a decent enough return. Still carrying over a massive loss on the sale of our previous rental home.
I've got an accounting firm working on the Brosen Motors return... which won't be a return at all, but they can start putting together all the pieces for me.

Just yours? I did 6 returns today.

Changed CPAs this year. Everything was uploaded to her portal and awaiting the results. Estimate looks like we should be in the clear. We took a beating last year with inadequate withholding after some wage increases and bonuses taking us up a bracket.

We moved away from the guy who has been doing my taxes since 2005. He wouldn’t answer emails/phone calls about some questions we had, so we found someone new. I don’t have time for that.

I have found that collecting all the forms and getting the folder organized usually takes more time than actually uploading/entering into the program. That is the easy part!

my extras this year were more tedious than difficult so not worried about having missed anything or leaving money on the table. If I had something exotic like rental property or an S corp/LLC I would hire a pro.

What’s great is that my twin brother is a retired forensic accountant who was head of fraud, worldwide, for one of the biggest accounting firms on earth. He does my taxes for me via a FaceTime call every year.

He is one of the first CPA’s to create and use specific tools he created for identifying, tracking and documenting fraud in some of the largest corporations worldwide. He used to travel frequently with his team of CPA’s (which he supervised) to Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia/New Zealand as well as North and South America. He even taught forensic accounting strategies at a prestigious university in a mid-Atlantic State.

He continues to consult from time-to-time.

Hmm, I think we spent over $1500 on our taxes last year (but, those costs are themselves deductable). The business taxes are due in mid-March, then the carryover from them (we're an LLC) will go onto our personal 1040's in April.

Say what? Carryover? To personal? Whatchu talkin bout? Don’t tell me I should have waited for the biz taxes before filing personal.(?)

I use TurboTax. The only extra charges are $20 for e-filing for state (for each return). I do three separate returns, but they are all based in KY.

The business doesn't pay taxes or collect a refund ... whatever it makes or loses goes onto our personal 1040 form.

In other words, yes, you should have waited for the business taxes to be completed before filing your personal forms. I'm sure you can file an amendment, or ask for an extension.

Disclaimer - I'm not a tax pro, just reporting what I know from the customer side of the table. The tax folders I get back from the CPA are probably 60-70 pages in size, for both the business and the personal taxes. The CPA is also our business bookkeeper, so I get a 3-ring binder as well with all the accounting for the year.

The accounting place I'm using is supposed to do my personal, too, but they don't have a questionnaire like the online programs. They just ask me to upload documents. When I ran through taxact, it will ask to input info on a document and then proceed to ask about deductions for that. So the firm has no idea at this point all the expenses related to the rent collected. Nor do they know my charitable expenses because they didn't ask. Guess I'm just used to having my hand held. Well, I'll figure it all out eventually.

I get a paper form from our CPA which asks for details like charitable giving, etc. It's still sitting on my desk since the business forms are still being worked on.

Are you using any sort of software for the business, to track revenue and expenses?

qbrozen, what type of entity is Brosen Motors? Likely an LLC? There is no LLC tax form. If a single member LLC it can elect to be taxed as a Sch C on your 1040 or as an S-Corp that passes through to your 1040 or very unlikely as a C - Corp that files a Corp return and pays taxes.
A multi member LLC has similar choices to elect.

Electing to be taxed as a S-Corp is fairly common but requires filing an S-Corp return which passes gain or loss to your 1040 and usually requires an active owner to take a salary and all the withholding that goes with it.

Electing to be taxed as a Sole Proprietor on Sch C of your 1040 is the least paperwork if LLC is only one member.
    Other thoughts are welcome.

It is currently an LLC. The place I used to file my business said to use LLC. Then when I hired these accountants, they started saying s-corp would be better, but we can put that off till I actually start doing business.

My daughter mentioned to me last night, after returning home, the tire pressure light was lit in the TL and the right rear tire showed 22 psi. Groan. Those tires are less than a month old! This morning I checked it with a tire gauge and yep now 20 psi. I couldn’t find a nail in the tire but knew I needed to have it looked at and few places are open on Sunday and she needs the car to commute to college tomorrow. After multiple calls I was able to find a tire shop willing to fix the tire today. Of course I was afraid it wouldn’t be repairable but thankfully it was a black screw that punctured the tire in an area where it could be repaired. I did fill the tire to 36 psi before leaving with this very handy air pump. It is a great tool to have when needed.

The wife, stepdaughter and I are all partners in the LLC, so the gains or losses from the LLC flow to our 1040's in the appropriate percentages.

Actually, I think last year we took all of the gains and put it onto our 1040 - the daughter has no income, as she gets 'partner distributions' from the business, and her taxes can be done on the EZ form (does that still exist?)

All that tire stuff made me think of a topic I don't remember being discussed recently......stone chips. The road I have to take a few times a week has a speed limit of 50 but people go 60 to 65. It's 4 lanes, 2 each way, and for some reason it was paved but now it has been dug up as if they are going to repave it, but they haven't touched it in 4 months. There are a layer of stones lying on top. Some young blonde woman driving a Dodge Durango passed me on the left, then moved into my lane in front of me and kicked up a stone that left a small chip in the windshield. This was the 4th stone that hit the windshield this week. I may get it filled when I have time...no rush. I understand that in Florida insurance companies pay for fixing stone chips. I think I'll have more soon, may as well get a new windshield once I get 3 or 4.
Do the guys that come to your house charge extra for that? It's a long hard drive to get to a Safelite location.

I'd rather have 13.7 mpg and be surrounded by steel, especially if traveling on roads in Florida where the accident rate especially for motorcycles is still climbing. Even walking isn't safe, they drive onto sidewalks and are killing people there too.

Speaking of the government it is becoming clear that both federal and state intend to harass anyone who continues to submit paper returns. I requested all the forms from the feds in January. Gird the they sent me a postcard saying all the forms were “unavailable” and would be sent later. So far all they have given me is Schedule B, nothing else. NYS is even worse. No library or post office has any state forms and the NY tax department refuses to accept requests for forms and then hangs up on you.

NY was quite clear that they wanted everything Efiled, and only special exceptions can use paper. Probably if you complain and act old enough they will make you one.

at least they require it is free.

I actually file on paper for NJ. But I would never use forms and hand calculate everything. I use the software, and let that do all the work. Then for NJ I print out the forms (they come out in a special machine readable scan format) and mail those in. I can wait an extra 3 weeks to get my refund to save $19.99 E-file fee. If it wasn't for that I would do it electronically.

You can do the same for the feds. I actually print out a full set of the forms used to keep in my files, and I don't think there is any restriction on mailing them in if you want to. Not sure if that option is there for NY (I have not gotten that far yet, I just did all the calcs and got depressed so I stopped!)

I remember sitting at the table with the forms and instructions trying to figure out how to calculate a bunch of stuff, and having a calculator out to add everything up. It really was crappy to do. New way, so much better and quicker!

We e-file here in Colorado, and our CPA provides us with a coupon to mail in with the payment, if one is necessary.

I remember, as a young teen, helping my dad with his taxes. It was usually an all day affair for him, as they itemized, and he had union dues he could claim, plus other expenses at the time.

Turns out that it took him so long because he did all his math by hand! Once we got our first TI calculator, and he trusted me with the math, we were able to cut down the pain and suffering by a fair amount.

Our library system will print out any forms you want. They get in the instructions books in that cheap
newspaper like material. The Fed isn't sending the thin booklets that used to have 1040, and Sched 1, 2, and 3 in it along with a senior citizen form. But they'll print them. They did for me when I asked when
the others were coming in. Their printer output looks much better than mine at home and uses less ink for me.

I didn't notice if they have the state (OH) forms or instruction booklet. I'll print those off at home if I need to. Ohio has a strange system for additional tax and for deductions, at least to my mind. 6 pages IIRC, mostly empty for most people unless you get one of the special niche tax credits. But once filled in I'll submit them on the Ohio website under my account.

Feds still get paper. Last year tried Turbo Tax and it was a minor mess and IRS refused to accept it from Turbo Tax. I would have tried Tax Act this year, but decided it's more fun to do it the old fashioned way.

We pay quarterly since my wife is basically self employed I guess. We always get a refund which she pays forward so never see it. Fine by me actually as makes things that much easier. She does ours last, this way she knows everything is done. But after taking the H&R Block tax class a few years ago, I now understand the return better. Also, have no problem paying taxes if we indeed are making more money...it only seems far. And this year might be my highest yet so far but that will depend if I don't miss a lot of work due to my vertigo issues. And I also need to stop passing out during the night on my way to the bathroom. It's getting more painful each time it happens and more expensive as I usuall need someone to come fix the damage I caused.

Am having bars installed in the guest bath later this week. Taking a shower these last couple of days, I planned out where they need to go so I can grab onto them getting in & out or if I feel like I'm going to fall while I shower. The price of getting older when one has health issues I suppose. We did price out the sit down bathtubs/shower combos and the roll in showers and the prices just blew my mind! Not cheap by any means and probably work for some folks. Just felt it was overkill for me right now so going with the bars as a temp measure. Gotta do something though as doing nothing is no longer an option.
It's like the Ring device the kids installed for us a couple weeks back. They insisted that I do something in the guest bathroom as they want to make sure I'm o k to shower in there. Was very fortunate that one of them came in for the weekend and was in her bedroom right next door. She heard me fall & was right there to get me help. It scared her a bit & knowing that I have a history of falling, especially at night, insisting that we do something soon. And I totally agree here as it really isn't safe for me anymore.

Sandman have you considered getting a chair or stool made for a shower so you could sit in the shower instead of standing and reduce the chances of a fall?

I have one of those. Mine is made out of teak. Don't use it much. My brother who is disabled has one that is aluminum with a plastic seat.

My oldest got me one from Amazon back in 2018 after my fall in the house & eventual gall bladder surgery. I used it in our master walk-in shower at the time & it worked really well. I might have to go back to using the master shower again so I can sit. Have been doing that since I fell most of the time. But still want to install bars in the bathtub just so if I do go back to using it full time, I'll have something to hold onto for egress/ingress & if I feel a bit dizzy while showering which happens more & more lately. Have started taking the vertigo medication since I fell as the vertigo seems like it's coming back unfortunately! Have been really thinking about all this stuff lately & maybe with the vertigo coming back a bit & me falling a few times, a tweak of my schedule & an eventual end date might just be something that'll happen sooner than later. Doubt I'll be doing this driving gig when I'm 80 or so like some of my co-workers...just don't think it's in the cards for me honestly! But it's really a hard decision to make because I like my job that much. To get paid to do something one loves to do is the ultimate joy in life I guess. I couldn't think of anything I enjoy more than driving all the different, newer vehicles that I drive. It's like a dream come true honestly...my job just doesn't feel like "work" in any sense of the word! And to get paid to do it? Totally outrageous I'd say!
But, the reality is that I've got health issues that don't seem to be going away...they only seem to be getting progressively worse. And I need to be cognizant of this & make the right decisions going forward. And I definitely do not want to hurt myself or others out there on the road. So in time, certain hard decisions might have to be made unfortunately about the future. Nothing that needs to be decided today...or tomorrow, but, the issue needs to be addressed.

Whelp, my tax return was rejected anyway.

    Here is the explanation:
The IRS is updating Business Rule F8960-019-04 to include Schedule C (Form 1040) amounts from Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 3. These updates will be implemented by mid-March. Please repeat the Filing steps to resubmit your return after that time. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Noticed my neighbor across the street no longer seemed to have his 1998 Acura CL (Canadian Acura version of a ‘98 Civic sedan with nicer trim inside and a different grille). He had inherited from his late mother’s estate 7 or 8 years ago with about 50000km (30k miles) on it and had been using it as his DD ever since. I got talking to him and he told me that on Super Bowl Sunday he went to the supermarket and on his way home the brake pedal started going almost to the floor. He took it to his favorite shop and they diagnosed a corroded brake line, but after it was up on the hoist they noticed that the rear suspension and unibody parts that it attached to was badly corroded to the point where they would have had to revoke his vehicle inspection certification, meaning his registration at DMV would be voided. He got over 100000km out of it, so it didn’t owe him anything. He says he might buy something brand new to replace it. Scrapyard gave him $300 for it.

When I downloaded taxcut Saturday, 1st step is always updating to latest version (seems odd, since I just downloaded it, but whatever). They had a note that the next forms update was happening on about 3/3. I think, like you found out, they know what forms are not final so will only block your filing if you are using one of them (unlike you, I probably didn't).

Better that they reject it, instead of taking it and deciding later you need to fix it.

I just think it is crazy they are updating a form in March for last year's taxes. I wonder if they would have rejected it if I was paying them instead of them paying me.

The oil changes for my Acura are only c.$55 at the dealer. Not shown in the picture below is the silly "scratch off" extra coupon that is usually another $3 off. They did sell me on a transmission fluid change at c.45k, which Acura itself says only needs to be changed that often for "severe service." But since my current goal is to try to keep the car to 200k, probably that was a good idea. They also probably have me change my cabin filter and engine air filter more often than needed, but I like clean air, and I imagine that's good for the engine when going for long life.

The latest service the Acura dealer tried to sell me on was a "new" $300 "chemical fuel system cleaning." I said no. But I'll ask them at some point if that will clean the intake valves, which might be getting carbon build up because of the direct injection.

This new service is the first time they have truly rubbed me the wrong way, given that they tried to sell it to me for my 15 RDX, and it's billed as a DI fuel system service... BUT I don't have DI!

Mike, since you are dealing with back issues, have you considered a crossover of some sort (a lower, more car like one, not a jacked up off road beast!) I know Genesis has a couple now in mid and large sizes. get pretty much all the features, comparable seats, but a higher hip point and driving position so you might find it easier to get in and out, and maybe sit more upright?

    @oldfarmer50,
Go to the IRS website, download and print them.

Can’t. No printer. I’ll probably stop by the library and have them print one if they don’t have any on hand. I know I’m being deliberately resistant but that’s one of my passive aggressive quirks.
