I'd take that deal too! But 8 months ago, I paid $71,000 for the car. With incentives, etc., that's what they are selling new for right now. $62,000 offer is a good offer right now, but like I said, there is nothing out there right now that I would be interested in right now. What I have now is the best car out there for me from what I've seen.

Question for the good folks here ....

If you have an older (non-classic) car, do you have full insurance on it? Comprehensive and collision?

I ask because two of my co-workers at the pizza place totaled their cars in the past 6 weeks - one on a delivery and the other in a non-delivery situation. Car 1 was an '03 Hyundai Sonata; car 2 was an early '00's Nissan Xterra. Neither had collision insurance. The owner of the Sonata had another car (late model Honda Pilot) that he is now using for delivery. The owner of the Xterra had to quit because she didn't have another car to drive.

It seems silly to me to drop collision insurance when you use your car for work.

Just curious as to what everyone here thinks.

My opinion may not qualify because my older cars aren't worth much but I don't think it's economical to run collision on older cars. The insurance company might just total the thing and you'd still be out a car. If either of my 20+ yo vehicles sustained enough damage to render them inoperative I'd send them to the crusher.

I do still have collision on my 2008 and 2009 cars.

Just curious, who was at fault in your co-worker's accidents?

Also did their own insurance cover rentals of any kind? Could either car be banged back into shape to keep delivering?

Why not just buy another beater?

Seriously, I got back a whopping $35 once by dropping full coverage back in the young and dumb learning days. No thanks, I'll keep the coverage on all vehicles.

Comprehensive and collision just about doubles my cost on any individual car. IIRC full coverage on the Eclipse is about $600, just liability on the Lincoln is $300

$5,000 TMV is my theoritical cutoff, but I really didn't save all that much looking at the numbers, so I kept insuring the old van until the value hit around $2,000. One little ding would have totalled it, in other words.

car insurance in Jersey is just crazy. But on my fleet, the 2007 Volvo has full coverage, the 2000 TL (175,000 miles) just liability. I took a chance on that since I got it in 2008, and the bet paid off. Key there is that is the car that my kids have been assigned to, so the extra cost for C&C is through the roof. One reason I plan to keep that car hanging around. Insurance savings just about pays for the running costs of the 3rd car.

Ah, the old new vs. used financial debate. Pretty much a given that unless you have an extreme outlier, the new car will cost more, even with frequent repairs.

But, for many (most?) people, those frequent repairs are important. They have no desire to be dealing with taking the car in on a regular basis. Not just paying for it, but dealing for it. And if the car is breaking down and stranding you, vs. just routine upkeep, then it has to go.

Take RBs X3 for example. Financially it makes sense to send it to college. Functionally, if it starts having issues, I bet he does not want to deal with long distance "general contracting" of repairs, or hearing from his son that it broke down 1/2 way home some day. I had this toward the end of my sons Senior year with the TL, and it was a huge pain to deal with from home (and a major hassle for him to keep getting it taken to the dealer and picking it up).

Farmer, not sure how it works, but if you were to tell insco you wanted to drop C&C on a vehicle shortly after paying the policy, your refund check would be very small. So small that you wouldn't even see it in the trunk of that Lincoln.

Mike, I know you don't want to trade now, and this possible buyer is not a family member. But when we traded in our 2004 X3, the dealer turned around and sold it to my SIL for the same price they gave me for it. It was called a family plan. The dealer doesn't lose because they sell a new car and will probably sell repairs and a warranty on the 2004 car.

Just wanted to point that out in case that comes up for someone else. That way sales tax is not a problem.

True. I learned that when I had a summer only car. The refund on the full year payment didn't match.

Pretty nice and low miles too. Southern car, no rust. Perfect. Do you need a convertible to compliment your hardtop Mustang? I have that dilemma too. I want a vert for nice weather cruising but I also want a pure performance car. Leads to having too many summer cars.

Is that a Fox body platform? I hear real enthusiasts deride that for not being stiff enough to get good handling.

My last Mustang was a 1998 GT (the rounded one) and I always wanted the more squared off 2003/4. Back then they were $15k. This one being convertible caught my eye and I like the color. Also has cloth seats which have more bolster than leather.
My max bid will be in the $5700 range. I guess I'm not as spendy as Mr Shifty.
And no, explorer you'll have to procure a "brick" locally as there is no way I would remove a working Mach 460 from a Mustang. Excellent sound system. Maybe upgrade the speakers is all.
Still dreaming at this point. There's probably some guy willing to go to $7k. Who knows. The seller is only 30 miles away. I emailed questions, but no response so far. Oldfarmer would say "he's probably out burning the tires off of it" lol

Wow, I'm glad to hear you like it too. I know Mustangs like you know BMWs.
This one has the molded plastic intake manifold which usually starts to warp and leak about 68k miles. It will have a miss when it's cold which gets less as it heats up. Replace or gunk will fix that. The A/T is also a tad weak. A new set of clutches and a shift kit will have you chirping tires in second and third gear. All cheap to do too. Other than that they're great cars.

I was going to post "I hope you like gray" given the monochrome tones on it, but since you do, great!

Interesting to see how design themes evolve over just a few years. In the late '90s/early '00s interiors like these were the norm, all one color with absolutely no brightwork at all. Today most cars have at least a splash of chrome inside and some a lot more, along with wood or other trim and often contrasting tones on the seats and doors.

I think these are in a sort of limbo now. I will turn my head for a well-preserved or restored original-style Fox platform Mustang more than one of these, and also for the new model. I am guessing that in time these will start to grab my attention again.

That picture looks amazingly like the 2001 Mustang GT convertible that I owned a few years ago. Same color, etc. I'm afraid I was rather disappointed with the performance of that 4.6 engine. A week or so ago I test drove a new 2014 Mustang, base model, V6, and it is much faster than the 2001 GT with the 4.6 V8.

I'll admit the convertible was fun.

The 2003/4 GT had a 4.6 engine producing about 230 HP. The Mach 1 had a 32 valve setup that increased HP to 295. Now if you wanted to have the Bad Boy it was the SVT Cobra. It came supercharged from the factory pushing almost 400 HP. Funny thing about waiting is...the current GT with the 5.0 Coyote beats them all.

Was that the regular 4.6L or the 32 valve? My Lincoln is geared for better gas milage so it's not real quick off the line but I'm impressed at how much oomph it has on the highway. I know the Cobra had the 32 valve with something like 320 hp.

The regular model. Which is going to be the same as in the car linked from ebay.

I loved to put the top down and go for a ride on Sunday afternoon, when the weather was nice. Here in houston, it's too d___ed hot 6 months of the year to drive around with the top down in the daytime. Which meant I didn't drive it very often, which is why I got rid of it. But it was fun....

When I put insurance on the Volvo, the agent told me the collision was like $45. So, yeah, I left full coverage on it. Seems reasonable enough to me to pay $45/yr to cover even a $3k car (if they total it, for example).

No, you don't save anything in terms of taxes in California. I remember I was leasing a 1991 Mercedes E300. Every year, I had to pay $650 just to register the car every year. Tags were based on the value of the car which, I believe, is still the case.

Sales taxes are outrageous, income taxes are outrageous, etc. I could not live in CA in my retirement due to the high rates of taxation on everything.

Here in FL, we have no State income tax, no estate taxes, and a 6% sales tax in my county which does not include food. That's the real reason FL and Texas are popular states for retirees.

When I buy a new car, tax is not calculated on the value of the trade. That's why I don't sell my cars privately.

When I buy a new car, tax is not calculated on the value of the trade. That's why I don't sell my cars privately.

Well, like most things in life, that's one of those "it depends" situations.

Case A: You have fairly new car, worth $20k on trade in, or $23k on a private sell. If you figure 6.25% sales tax, then it's worth $20,000 times 1.0625 or $21,250 when you trade it in. Which means you have lost about $1,750 by trading. And you have to weigh that against your time and aggravation trying to sell.

Case B: You have an older car that the dealer doesn't really want, and he will only give you $2k for it on a trade. But you know your co-worker would love to have that car for his teenager in high school, and would be quite happy to pay you $5,000 in cash, today.

One of the problems with "Case A", above, is that most people do not have $23k in cash laying around. They will need to finance, and you can't help them with that. Unless they have a good working relationship with their bank or credit union (which a lot of people do not have), things are going to get unduly complex in a hurry.

I have sold a lot of used cars in my time, most for well under $10k. Never for more than $20k. If it's worth that much, far easier to just trade.

    MORE BAD NEWS!!!

It seems that when it rains, it pours. I just got off the phone with my son who lives in La Quinta, CA. He collapsed at work last week. They put him in the hospital at Eisenhower Medical Center. After a brain scan, they found a tumor, the size of a dime, in the rear portion of his frontal lobe.

They said they are going to do another scan in 5 weeks and determine if it has changed in any way. At that time they will determine what to do. They did not call it benign at this time due to the location and the affect it has had on him.

I'm flying out there next week. He was just here with the kids and his SO and flew home 10 days ago after my daughter's funeral.

I am just beside myself. It just doesn't stop. And my Dad gets worse every week, it seems. I just don't know how much more I can withstand.

It seems silly to me to drop collision insurance when you use your car for work.

Just curious as to what everyone here thinks.

Unless they are paid as independent contractors, I would say that they have a good shot at filing a claim with the pizza shop's insurance company in order to collect something. Since they are required to have a car and use in in their job, they might have some coverage.

Of course, they won't have a job once the pizza shop owner finds out.

I recently dropped full collision on our 2000 Odyssey. Since my 17 YO son is listed as the primary driver on that car, going to limited collision is saving over $600. The car is only worth $2K and if he damages it, oh well.

I am now looking into getting someone here to care for my Dad when I am out in CA.

Mike, I have been gone a month and just read about your daughter, and now your son. I'm so very sorry for your loss and will pray for your son. I'll also pray for your happiness and well being. You've had such a rough time but you have been stronger than most people could be. Keep your chin up and know that all of us here are supporting you.

I last posted on July 7th. My BIL passed away that night. We spent 10 days with my sister. We had a lovely military funeral with Honor Guard and 21 gun salute by the Air force., along with a U.S. Army Chaplain. My BIL did 20 years in the Army and 15 years in the Air Force. He was decorated in Vietnam and Desert Storm. He practiced medicine for 52 years. Besides all of that, he was a gentle, kind, and generous soul. We heard so many wonderful stories from his former patients who he did not charge when they were low on money or were having a rough time. Many said that he even paid for their medicines, especially the elderly. We miss him terribly but we know where he is now.

I finally got an answer about our garage housing an F150 truck. I had an architect and an engineer team to check it out for me. It can be done to the tune of $20,000. The top and sides of the garage would have to be removed and supported by a temporary structure. The center column would then be removed completely and replaced by three angular steel beams which would support the original brick once it was placed back in position. The new mortar between the original bricks would have to be colored to match the old mortar in the rest of the house. It would actually become an historic restoration project. There are two things for sure. First, I don't want to mess with the integrity of this home. Secondly, I do not want to spend an extra $20,000 just to have a truck. My wife was so sweet. She told me to just get the truck and park it on the side street next to the house. I don't want to do that either. I then turned my attention to a Honda Pilot. While I was looking around, I read where the Pilot design will be completely changed in 2016. Well, that takes care of that. Now I am just looking at everything.

I'll try to post again when I can. I have just taken a new position for a year as president of our county museum. It's going to be a bigger job than I thought. Outside of speaking engagements, I have to plan exhibit events at the museum, catalogue all of the artifacts, do quite a bit of correspondence, etc. It's a challenge but I think that I will enjoy it. Hope everyone here is well.

I might be judging full time again...
I'm only 18 days shy of the 600 days I had to complete to satisfy the "Senior Status" early retirement program. Now it seems that one of the judges I worked with for over a decade may retire in 2-3 months due to some health issues. If that happens, the vacancy would be filled by a special election in November 2015. The governor appoints a judge to serve in the meantime, and a few people have asked if i would be interested in the appointment. I might do it, it would only last for @10-11 months and it isn't a bad gig.
If that doesn't pan out I might become a part-time persecutor... err... prosecutor. My old law partner was elected County Attorney in May(there will be a general election, but opposition is token at best). I told him if he wanted someone to cover trials a couple of days per week I'm the man. What I won't do is handle intake(for example, listening to the idiot who wants to bring charges against his neighbor because the guy flips him off every time he drives by his trailer...). And I don't do on-call(I was available 24/7 for 22 years-BTDT).

So we will see what happens..

Oh Mike, I'm so sorry to hear this. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Can I suggest you might want to see a counselor to help you through all this? No one should have to go it alone under this kind of stress. Talking about it might make things a little easier.

I realize we're not professionals, but he's not alone. We're here for you Mike.

The greatest gift is to make the world a better place for others....your brother certainly did that, He is fortunate to have such caring friends and relatives to be by his side at his time of need.

My experience in an E-150 was excellent. My wife and I were passengers in the back and the back seat is very comfortable. Nice big windows, high seating, lots of room, nicely finished. It was much nicer than I expected and more comfortable than a car in many ways. However, $20K to convert the garage sounds like a pretty major reno to accomodate a vehicle.

BMW 535 and Audi 6 are supposed to get complete renews in 2016 too. I don't know if I want to wait, and what if I don't like them as much? I am going to try 2015s and start to formulate a plan.

I don't know how you do all this extra work...and people always seek you out. I try not to do things so well so I don't get asked. I thought I'd be bored being retired but the days speed by and I don't even accomplish anything.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family. My daughter and you brother are together in God's realm and care.

Yes, it's been tough for many of us. I am now waiting to hear from my son so I know which airport to fly into. I think he is going to Loma Linda which is near Ontario airport and I can get their with a connection in Dallas.

I spoke with him last night again and he said his SO has been a trooper. I just want to avoid becoming a bourdon or worry to them. The doctors have to first determine if it is malignant or benign and they won't know that for a few more weeks after a second brains can to compare both scans to see if there is any change.

Again, my sincerest and heartfelt sympathy to you and yours.

Richard, was just thinking of you yesterday .. that we hadn't heard from you in a while and that, at last post, your BIL was resting comfortably.

So sorry to hear of his passing, but I truly believe he is in a better place and not suffering. You've gone above and beyond in helping care for him. I should be so lucky when my time comes.

Museum curator? That sounds like a fun job. Always good to keep busy, even though it comes at the expense of time spent here at Edmunds.

Another regular I haven't heard from in a while is jmonroe ... anybody know what's going on with him?
