@Michaell , I was thinking $4k before seeing the example for sale. Obviously, that seller would likely take close to $4k as well. So seems like a fair number for family.

I asked for $2500 for my share, and added a  emoji to my text.

She knows I'm still looking for a job, so I doubt this will get acrimonious.

Posted over on CCBA. We drove our Tesla about 388 miles down to Bend OR. Unfortunately as everyone here suspected, we got 30 miles from home and suddenly we’re unable to go further because of charging infrastructure.

Kidding. We got 300 miles per charge and spent under $30 on supercharging. Our longest charge took 17 minutes. Zero wait for a stall. It was absolutely horrendous.

    Thanks for asking @imidazol97,
I think we should be OK. It looks like Indalia is heading into the Panhandle area. Areas near the coast around Tampa will probably get a pretty big surge.
We are about 15 miles inland, and by total accident we are about 35 feet above sea level, so as long as the structure holds up and the water on the grass doesn't puddle too high, we should be OK. Our nice neighbors are keeping a watch on our place.

    Glad it worked out fine.
The story of my friend was too long so people missed it. Here's the short version.

Driving home from a long trip, it is almost midnight, he has 5% charge left.
Decides to turn off the radio and heat, and try to make it home, as it's a pain to get over to the charge station at the mall at midnight.
He loses his charge when he is a few blocks from home. Asks a home owner if he can plug into his electricity.
Doesn't work. You have to charge the engine and the instruments.....two batteries apparently.
Walks home, goes back the next day. Calls the garage.
They can't get it in neutral to load onto the truck....it needs a charge for the instruments to work.
Charge it up enough to get it into neutral and load it on the truck.
Since he tried to charge it when empty it blew a transformer or something....$2000 repair.
Not covered by warranty if the charge gets below 5%
I am just telling his story.....don't shoot the messenger. Reporting it as a learning experience.

In a recent Motor Trend article they deliberately ran their Rivian down to 0% as a real life use case to see what happens. By their own account the vehicle did everything it could to prevent a total and complete shutdown and only happened because they forced the truck to 0%. Similar difficulties and expenses in remediating the issue were encountered there too.

Sounds like it could be user error, poor planning, or a combination of both to me.

    Big +1

Sounds like someone who was used to the one to two gallons of cushion left when your ICE vehicle is on E. Doesn’t exist here but the car will be so obnoxious that to ignore the warnings would almost certainly be user error.

This guy is fairly easy going and he thought he could make it home and plug it in, when at 5%
Something else we talked about....his Tesla is supposed to be able to go 300 miles on a charge.
But, you should only fill it to 80% because overcharging can degrade the battery...that makes it realistically 240 miles.
Then you can't use the last 5% so that eliminates 15 miles. and brings it down to 225 miles.
And then there is the a/c, radio, wiper blades etc......the real range for a 300 mile charge is more like 200 miles.
He also said finding chargers is more difficult in large cities. They have more chargers but getting through the traffic can be time consuming and aggravating.
He also got off the highway to get a free charge only to find the free charge was in a parking garage that required $10 to get inside. :s

We leave our primary most of the summer and I run it at 79 while we are gone. Have smart thermostats to know all is ok.

We’re experiencing severe thunderstorms and 30+ mph winds as outer bands from the hurricane, which is about 150 miles west of us, pass through. Luckily, we are being spared what northern Floridians will be experiencing.

In addition to ignoring the warnings that the car was sending the driver, which makes this guy more than a little short of much intelligence, he’s also cheap. Choosing not to pay the parking lot fee of $10 to charge his battery, which would have gotten him home safely, he cost himself many times that amount. I’d say on a color coded intelligence chart this guy registers in the red area.

Yes, the thermostat is kept at 84. The place would get mold without a/c, some people do it but they pay for it eventually. We used to empty the fridge and turn it off, but we haven't done that for a decade, easier to keep it going. The electric bill is only about $30 to $40 in the summer. Our neighbor has a generator and they said they would run a line to our place if the electricity is off for any length of time.

$30 on supercharging? Huh. So 736 miles… I’m going to just take a wild guess at some numbers. I’m thinking like $10 to fully charge at home. Were you nearing empty when you reached home? If so, that’s $10 at start of trip, $30 during, and $10 after. A Prius could have also done the trip for ~$50, and only stopped once for 5 mins for refueling. Of course, it is a Prius. Just making an observation, that’s all.

Sure. But then I’d be driving a Prius..

No doubt a vehicle could have done it as efficiently. I’m mostly observing that the act of supercharging is not as overpriced or inconvenient as some here would believe.

Also we’re still on the trip. I haven’t done the return ride yet which is different elevation changes.

Since Mr. Ticket has been Mr. Too Close to Useless for some previous tickets/citations as my traffic lawyer, I've called up the "Guy." This new lawyer group calls themselves "My Traffic Guys"

They charge $1 more than Mr. Ticket; money well spent most likely. Of course, I'm giving them a tough case, against the CHP on an absolute law.

Even worse, I forgot to demand the County Seat which would have given us the assured upper hand.

Amen, and a curse. The developer of our neighborhood blessed each yard with two trees in the front yard. Now that the neighborhood is 20 years old, the trees have met their life expectancy, most have blight and time to go at great expense.

Our city is very strict about landscaping, almost to the point of being a bit over the top. Each house must have three trees in the front yard, more if desired, but at least three. When a hurricane took one of ours out years back, got a letter from the city informing me I had a certain amount of time to replace the downed tree from a list of "approved" trees! The part about "approved" really gave me a laugh at first but really would rather be the one to pick whatever I wanted. Wife decided just best to pick one from the list so she & one of our girls had it done...all I had to do was write the check!
I get that the city has certain standards they want everyone to live by & our city does look very nice but they sometimes do go a little overboard. Next up is having our barrel tile roof cleaned before I get the dreaded letter from the city. We have to have this done like every four or five years and that time has come again. As I told the kids, home ownership isn't for the faint of heart as one is always shelling out money for this or that. But that's the price we all pay for owning our property and living in a nice area I guess. And besides having the threat of hurricanes every year and the brutal heat for too many months, it really is a nice place to live, so I pay the price to do this.

Trust me Stick, that kind of weather is looking quite appealing right about now. By the end of August, many of us have had enough of the 90 degree weather & we still have another couple of months of it to go. Even October can be quite warm down here, and there's still another couple of months of hurricane season. Just wish I could move to a more temperate climate to be honest. But prefer to not be too far from the girls at this point as sometimes my health gets a bit challenging. Think I'd love moving to Chicago where our son & his wife live but think the winters would just be too cold. And not sure the finances would afford two places to live, I'm guessing.

Took a "mental health" day on Tuesday so I'd have three days of quiet. Learned one thing, one important thing. As much as I do love my Enterprise gig, I'd be just as happy to stay home full time going forward! I've been doing things around the house that I've put off & I'm making some progress. Cleaned my office on Tuesday while the guy was working on the driveway. Yesterday, tackled the closet in my office & found a couple of things I've been looking for. Also started going through my sock/underwear drawers and sorting things out. Since I've been home today, threw another load of wash in as my hamper was pretty full. Tried on my stack of shorts & put aside the ones that no longer fit. Either they've shrunk or...I've gained a few extra pounds. I'm going with the former here, but think it's really the latter. But did learn one thing...I've just got too much clothing! Shorts, shirts & slacks...just too many. Filled up the donate bucket with shirts yesterday & now have about half a dozen shorts to add to the pile.
I actually waited till the house was empty to start doing this stuff as I need to do this myself, with no "help" from the others. Obviously I've got to donate more stuff & it's starting to get done. But it feels good to start this long overdue process, I just had to be ready to start doing it, at my own pace.

Nope, that's what we say here in Colorado.

I have personally witnessed a 40 degree drop in the ambient temperature in 30 minutes.

Nah, we never said it in Southern California, because the weather was between 65 and 85 about 90% of the time.

I think my town requires developers to put two trees per house but has no standards about caring for them or replacing them. Certainly my place wasn’t a development so they didn’t care. I planted a number of trees from my own “approved” list. Supposedly, you have to get permission to cut down existing trees but I never bothered with that either. I guess if you have enough acreage they leave you alone.

As to the roof, I don’t think they even care if you have one.

Watching all the bad weather elsewhere in the country, being up here in moderate snow land is starting to look pretty good! 71 today, 77 tomorrow, sunny and not humid!

Wait until Monday and you’ll think you’re in Sandy’s neighborhood.😅

We get a newsletter from our HOA each month; recently, they announced that they would be reviewing all the houses in the development (around 1000, I think) to make sure each house has the requisite number of trees in the front yard.

When the houses were built, the developer put a tree in the front yard, another one on the small strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street, and a third in the river rock on the other side of the driveway from the front lawn.

When we moved in (2 years after they were built), the tree in the rocks was dead, so we had it pulled and replaced with 3 willow "trushes" (not tall like a tree, more like a big bush). The one in the front yard died shortly thereafter, and we put in a red Japanese Maple. The tree in the strip of grass is thriving, though I can't remember what type it is (its name is "Felicia", according to my daughter).

I'll get pictures of them in the morning.

I don’t think I could live where a HOA was meddling in my business.

I lived in an HOA near Cincy back in the late 70s for 2 years or so. I said
I'd never live in one again and I haven't. Most corrupt thing I'd seen, at least until recently.
