    That's silly.

The EV owner should have set up a portable windmill or laid out their solar panel set they carry in their trunk. Here they're using fossil fuel to power up the EV.

You mean I could have bought one of these for $228 instead of our $10000 Generac?

Yes they do. I like having it. I normally just keep my phone in my pocket and don’t want to have to take it out to plug in and fire up google maps all the time. I only do that if I want to navigate someplace.

But I love just having the map on the screen to check where a cross street is or see what road I am on. Stuff like that. Or how close to a store. Plus I like how it looks! I also like having the radio built in, but by your logic, they could do away with that too, right? And just have a plain little monitor with no functionality built in? Which is probably what some makers are going for.

If I understand it right, you can listen to most music through your phone as well, so yeah, dump the radio too.

My radio needs are pretty basic, just a couple of local stations that I can even get on the one staticky speaker in the cargo van. On the road at work I sometimes just scroll until something interesting comes in.

Good, but even that would be illegal in Ontario Canada. You can't have your phone in your car when driving, which includes stopped for a red light.

I just received this email from our Board of Directors, which is self-explanatory:

    “_Dear…………Residents,

You are aware that we have a major Iguana problem in……... We have tried cage trapping methods with no success in removing the iguanas. Many other communities are using a more aggressive method of removing Iguanas.

On September 7, 2023 ……….Community Council Board of Directors, which represents each association voted 4,270 yes votes and 240 no votes to use air rifles for the removal of iguanas.

A detailed schedule will be prepared and posted on each building and sent out in an email blast to all residents so that everyone is aware of the professional (Redline) teams location.

Please do not interact or interrupt them while they are fulfilling their contractual obligation_.”

I have mentioned numerous times that a day does not go by where I observe these critters throughout our huge community (5,000+ residents) climbing trees or crawling across roadways. These critters are huge and have created such a nuisance that a huge amount of money is going to be obligated toward iguana removal (the green variety is what has invaded us).

I guess it could have been worse if the infestation was alligators. Green Iguanas are not indigenous to south Florida, just as the pythons in the Everglades are not. These species were introduced to our environment by humans discarding their “so-called pets” because they no longer had use for them. They multiply almost geometrically in the wild and have no natural predators.

So I guess I will be seeing them out on the hunt with some regularity.🌴🐉🕊️🐊🦎

The gators should just eat the iguanas. Solve one problem.

Air rifles? Weak option. Just put out a call to all local “Florida men” to bring their real ones (in the truck already) and have at it, keep what you kill.

Iguana Tacos with Aji Amarillo Crema (Chicken of the Tree Tacos)

I decided to make tacos with one of my smallish Iguanas. First, I dredged the meat in a flour mixture mixed with Cajun seasoning to add a touch of spice. Then, I paired these with a Mexican Crema mixed with Aji Amarillo, a Peruvian Yellow Pepper paste, for South American Flavor (If you are a fan of Peruvian food like me, Aji Amarillo is a staple in Peruvian cooking and you can buy it in any Latin Grocery Store or on Amazon).

The tacos were finished with a drizzle of the Crema, lime juice, cabbage and avocado for South American Flavor that pairs perfectly on this delicious white meat!

I have written almost 500 reviews on Tripadvisor, and I think I have only written about 4 really bad reviews over the years.
Mrs D100 and I went to a very upscale 5 Star restaurant one night, and the only item on the menu that seemed like something I'd want was Monk Fish which I knew nothing about.
When I got it, I quietly said to MrsD100 that this thing is really tough. The waitress overheard me and said people usually use a steak knife, so she brought me one. It didn't help much and I have no idea why anyone would want to order or eat it.
When the waitress asked if we wanted dessert we said no and went somewhere else for dessert.
The one good thing is that they had a nice little store that sold crafts at the restaurant, and we bought two beautiful pillows that we still have 10 years later.
The restaurant went out of business shortly after my 1 Star review was posted....I guess I have lots of followers on that site too :)
    When I got home I looked up Monk fish, if I knew it looked like this I would have had a kale salad over this;

I am not criticizing EVs. But I like to look at information so I can assess if it could be the right car for me. Like I said, what if my car was destroyed and I had to buy a new car tomorrow...I want to be informed.

I was reading this review of the new Polestar 2, and there is a RWD model with 299 HP, and an AWD model with 421 HP.

Power from the dual-motor car is rated at 421 horsepower (455 with the Performance Pack) and a stumppulling 546 pound-feet of torque, while the rear-wheel drive version makes do with 299 hp and 361 lb-ft. Those aren’t small figures necessarily, but I say “makes do” because at over 2,000 kilos, the Polestar 2 is heavy and the steering is just a little on the lazy side. You can adjust the steering weight through those finicky menus, but I didn’t feel a huge difference between the three different levels – until I moved to the RWD car. It’s the more involved piece. It’s lighter, almost feeling like it’s the more performance-oriented model even though the dual-motor has all that extra power. It just felt so much more car-like in the traditional sense with less of that disconnected feel you get when driving so many EVs today.

Some information in this review was very informative for me. 2000 kilos is well over 4000 pounds. But this sentence really stuck out:
It just felt so much more car-like in the traditional sense with less of that disconnected feel you get when driving so many EVs today
I like the way my MBs handle and it sounds like that could be missing in an EV. Still, not for certain, but if I was to test drive one I'd sure want to look into that before buying. It's part of due diligence...learn as much as possible before buying!

Well you should not buy anything you aren’t used to without careful needs analysis, and a test drive. Goes for an EV certainly, but also an F150, miata, etc.

    You disappoint me.

I always thought you had good taste. But some of those things you said you like, no way for me. I happen to like liver made with onions. My mother made it very good and Mrs. j isn’t bad at it either although she hasn’t made it for quite some time. Son #1 actually gaged when eating liver. So that was taken off his menu.

A fake healthier foie gras made with lentils, chopped onions, chopped walnuts, hard boiled eggs, low salt vegetable broth and salt seasoning is very good. The caveat is if you don’t like chopped liver taste or appearance.

If the top is that bad, underneath must be Swiss cheese. Very far beyond my meager skills, and paltry budget. Zero chance you could restore it for what it would be worth. Maybe a parts car?

Well you should not buy anything you aren’t used to without careful needs analysis, and a test drive. Goes for an EV certainly, but also an F150, miata, etc.

True, but now I will know something to really look for...how it steers and handles. I actually saw a Polestar today and it looked nice. I have no desire to trade in my car at this time, but if I needed a car quickly an EV would be worth a try......but, it sure wouldn't be a slam dunk car I'd buy.

I've had the pleasure of driving a friends Polestar. It is a handsome vehicle, and he has the dual motor, so the 400+ HP version. Gets up and going quite rapidly.

Very nice inside, as well. Yes, the range is a little less than the class leaders, but I wouldn't necessarily take it on a long road trip without a lot of planning for recharge stops.

I like the horses, not so sure about less range with the AWD model. The range is only about 270 miles, and that means closer to 230 if you have to start looking for a charging station...and leave some juice in case you have to find another working charger.
Also, is 270 miles the real number, or is that 100% charged which you aren't supposed to do....80% would make it more like 220 miles.

You friends car cost him a small fortune to fix because he was too dumb/cheap or both to get his car charged after repeated warnings.

The thing that surprises me is that Toyota didn’t have safeguards in place to protect the car from owners like your friend. It wouldn’t take much to make the car shutdown altogether.

Maybe EV owners should sue the manufacturers for not building in a safety system or two to prevent this type of damage and I’m serious about that because they can do everything else they want the car to do. Someone has to be the smart one about this because the owners damn sure aren’t. I can’t believe this isn’t fairly widespread.

    Just a few things to keep in mind;
*My friends car is actually a Tesla.
*He came back from a long trip and it was a long day. He thought 5% juice left meant it was like a gasser....it says empty but you can still go another 30 miles....safety factor built in. And, the charging station was quite a ways out of his way...thought he could make it home and charge it there.
*My friend is a bright guy.....he has an important job working for a mutual fund company. He is like an absent minded professor type. He likes cars but is not knowledgeable like you are.
*Some people here think everyone should know everything about cars....some people have other interests as well. He is probably more of a typical driver....doesn't know a lot of details.
*He was going to buy a GM Equinox (tells you how knowledgeable he is (just joking) ) and when they said it could take a year to get one he filled out an application for a Tesla as a joke...but they said the model he wanted would be delivered in 2 weeks. So he went with it.
*At first he used an extension cord to juice up his Tesla....he said that could take 3 days....it actually takes about 22 to 24 hours. Then he had to get a super charger, $2500!
*How would a normal person know that if the car gets to 0..."zero" charge, it could blow a $2000 part? The thinking is like computers. Sometimes I need to fix something like the wi-fi to the printer....it can be tricky, unplug and plug in, turn on wi-fi, find the signal......it is easy for people raised on computers, not easy for people who started using computers late in life.
*Maybe the warning should have said, "You can only go 30 miles max or you could have serious and costly problems"

I have to agree. Most people these days don’t know enough to even change the oil so it stands to reason they wouldn’t be knowledgeable in the details of EVs.

To be honest, I didn’t know that running an EV to zero would blow it up either.

I’m just happy that I found RUG for $3.57/gal. this morning close to home. Cheapest in the area to my knowledge.

running the battery to empty is not going to blow up the car. I forget all the details you included but I seem to recall he did something dumb after that? Teslas run out of juice all the time and just get hooked up to a normal charger and refill so something in this story is odd.

still, if you are driving a vehicle you should be expected to understand how it works and what you need to do about it. You get an owners manual for a reason. I honestly have no sympathy for someone that ruins their expensive stuff because they could not be bothered to look at how to take care of it. No different than people that trash their engines because they never bothered to check the oil, or know that they needed to get it changed before the no oil pressure light comes on. Or check their tires and get a blowout.
