I had my Hyundai Veracruz in the dealership for some recall work a couple weeks ago. I had a $10 off coupon for an oil change, so I asked if they could fit in an oil change. Absolutely! my service tech says. Says he can do better and give me $20 off. Wonderful, getting better by the minute, I says. I ask what's the total. Service tech says $84 with the discount. I explain I did not want the synthetic oil change. He says that's all they do. I can't believe what I'm hearing. They trying to punk me? So the next day I call and ask to speak to the service manager. The service manager confirms and gives me a long drawn out soliloquy on why. Has anyone here ever heard of such nonsense? This was at @roadburner favorite automotive group... Oxmoor.

Also, did look at a few small to midsize suvs with my wife about a month ago. More to be ready in case something happened to the Veracruz, as it has more than 200,000 miles. Looked at the Honda Pilot, Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV, Hyundai Santa's Fe(looks horrible) and the Hyundai Tucson. Mrs. Jip likes the Pilot, CRV and Tucson... in that order.

You should also look at the Passport. Much like the Pilot, minus the third row.

I saw some poor lady trying to drive around a traffic circle today in a Model 3.
She must have had max regen on with 1 pedal driving.
It was lurching around like she was a novice driver.

Is it still thought that high mileage cars that have used Dino oil should continue with Dino oils because seals may leak with synthetic?

Can you guys read or am I not clear on this? LOL. To clarify I am not anti-synthetic. I am anti-dealership!
When a dealership pushes a product (synthetic oil), at the exclusion of a less expensive product the major of customers would prefer (semi-synthetic). It's like going to a sports bar and all they offer is a wacky expensive European beer when all I want is a Modello.

Isn’t Modello what Clint Eastwood drank in TGTB&TU? Sounds wacky expensive to me.☺️

That was an old wives tale probably propagated by cheapos like @jipster who wanted to save a buck on oil changes. B)

No chemist or knowledgeable car guy I ever spoke to, could make that wives tale work. Also, when oil companies started selling synthetic blend oils that’s all I needed to know.

Aside from being a penny pincher, using a blend is pretty much like taking a shower with your skivvies on.

That was the case 15-25 years ago (maybe more) because it took the industry awhile to use a rubber compound in o-rings and other seals that didn't shrink in the presence of synthetics. Anything built less that 20 years ago shouldn't have a problem.

My GM dealer only uses the GM Dexos oil for changes now, which is synthetic as spec'ed by GM. I don't think you can get dino oil from them unless you want to bring your own.

    Travel trailers.

We are just kicking around the idea a bit. Tow it behind the sprinter. Yes, I can, and probably will, put a bed in the sprinter, but nothing will make it capable of sleeping 4 full-sized humans and 2 dogs. I’m limiting us to 5k max dry weight and has a queen plus 2 other separate beds (either bunk beds or couch plus dinette). I’m not against slideouts but would prefer to avoid the extra hassle and potential problems.

Anyway, from reading the interwebs, I’m aware there can be massive differences in build quality. Problem is I have found conflicting opinions. One chat group trashed Coleman/Thor/Dutchman/Keystone (all the same manufacturer) while another group said they are just as good as any other. Same goes for Jayco. Probably more positive talk around Jayco than negative.

Right now, it would appear Jayco must have massive factory incentives because dealers are at about 40% off MSRP. Low enough that used doesn’t make sense when folks want $7k-$8k for a 10-yr-old model vs $14k new.

Yeah, I’d like an airstream, but those things are crazy expensive in comparison.

And if you are still nervous about running synthetic you can use one of the high mileage synthetics that contain gasket/seal conditioners to keep them pliable. In the alternative, just add a can of Liqui Moly Motor Oil Saver at every oil change.

more than quadruple for similar size. Why? I presume the same reason why an Audi costs more than a VW.

Best advice I've heard about travel trailers is to get it inspected before you buy, even a new one.

No idea. I suppose MAYBE it is like electronics, appliances, or fixtures manufacturers. They build to a price and brand it where it fits.

Hey Q … from being in the campground I’ve been around a number of different trailers (we had a park model). Jayco always seemed to be pretty nice inside.

One thing to note most all of them use the same brand of refrigerators, water heaters etc. (Dometic). They have a pretty large support network for repairs and parts.

One thing I’ve always heard (from many other campers) is that the more you pull them around the more things will break and they basically age in dog years.

Also been tossing around the idea of a travel trailer, motor home or 5th wheel. Don't know a lot about them, but have watched a few "Liz Amazing" videos on Youtube. She speaks on the pros and cons of ownership as she travels the country. One of her top recommendations is don't buy anything during the pandemic era... after 2020. They're having a lot of issues with things falling a part, leaks, and electrical problems. Thinks buying 2010-2017 will have better quality. Mrs. Jips and I looked at a Starcraft travel trailer a month or so ago. It was around $23k. Nice. But seemed kind of flimsy to me. Like riding around in a big soup can.

My understanding is that the RV and by association, the travel trailer market has collapsed and that prices are at near give-away levels. Whatever you buy should be cheaper than a year or two ago so negotiate aggressively.

This one is bigger than I was looking for, but hard to NOT like the idea of a little more room for a small price increase. Strange oversight on this, though, is the lack of a stovetop.

A guy a work bought a motor home on a whim and took a bath on depreciation. I think he sold it for about half of his purchase price after one year and 11,000 miles.

Maybe you could buy a one year old model from someone who had buyer’s remorse and it wouldn’t be so wrecked.

Double axle. Nice. The travel trailer we looked at was single axle, similar layout, maybe not as big, and it was discounted around $6k from around $29k.

I'd be more inclined to go the motor home route though. Sit back on the sofa sleeper, watching whatever game is in the tellie, and drinking an ice cold Modello as Mrs. Jip drives to our destination of choice. ;-)

    Ugh what a day!!

Got up at 3…. to the airport by 4:15. First flight delayed an hour. Changed my connection because I’d miss it. Get on the runway and have to turn back for a “maintenance issue”.

End up staying at airport until 3PM on the hopes I can get on a direct. I’m already way later than I want to be anyway. Luckily I get the last seat and finally landed in Las Vegas around 8:30 EST nearly 17 hours since I got up.

At least I got a nice brand new Wagoneer as a rental.

    ————————————————-
That’s a miserable day alright. Check the glove box…somebody owes you a good bottle of bourbon.

Got a call from the liquor board here that my name got picked to buy one of 4 of these they somehow had on offer, so I grabbed it. I had gotten one a few months ago from them when they had their first offering and this one is supposedly a different flavor profile. The first one is very nice so I have high hopes for this one too. $90 worthless Cdn dollars, or mere pocket change for my USA friends. Hard to go wrong with cask strength Makers Mark.

I’ve had one of those releases (don’t remember which). Good stuff

Isn't it Thor who makes the Airstream? Not sure how their other brands could be trash.

    Looks that way.
No idea. I suppose MAYBE it is like electronics, appliances, or fixtures manufacturers. They build to a price and brand it where it fits.
I'm on my 2nd Airstream. Keep in mind that the components like the fridge, A/C, water heater, furnace, stove, etc. are the same for most manufacturers. Airstream bodies and structure are what makes them cost more.

Makers Mark was my choice back in day. Just pedestrian stuff mixed with coke/Pepsi.

I wonder if he was really using the phone on a public road or not, seems like that would be the key. Could be legit, could be rage bait.

Exactly. The kid claims he was at McDonalds on a private lot, the question is was he on the phone before he got to McD's.

I'd be more inclined to go the motor home route though. Sit back on the sofa sleeper, watching whatever game is in the tellie, and drinking an ice cold Modello as Mrs. Jip drives to our destination of choice. ;-)

I can do that in the Sprinter, though, so no worries. I kind of like the idea of keeping them separate. The sprinter gets pretty funked up during a road trip. Keeping the sleeping quarters pristine for nighttime is appealing.

Credit score ghost strikes again. Just got a notice from amex this morn that my score dropped 11 pts. Still well over 800, but Absolutely no reason for the change. I have done NOTHING since the last increase in score, nor for many months prior to that.

Ours seems to make changes with larger purchases made with a credit card. It goes right back up after paying it off
