My folks had a '57 Chevy - convertible, I think - when they were first married. It got totaled by a dump truck on the road to Santa Barbara before I was born.

I like the 56 Chevy much more.

My cousin picked up one slightly used in 1956 in the black and yellow two tone that was so futuristic then. He always pointed out the two knee impressions in the dash from the impact that the original owner made during the crash. Slightly used but repaired.

I like the flat front and more subtle trim of the 56 too. Make mine a Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige Nomad.

That pictured wagon is a power tour car, probably has a FI 454 or something wacky under the hood and suspension from a much newer car.

ab - Love the Nova Scotia clip.

My wife and I honeymooned up there. Hit pretty much all the highlights. Would really love to revisit.

The Cabot Trail is worth the price of the new brakes you'll need no matter how low a gear you're in on the downhill section.

There was an old fella who had the Tartan Motel outside of Halifax who had the best stories. Had come from Hamilton, ON. he'd been out in the country then the city grew around him - so he moved.

Decides to build wooden platforms for camping. Asks the woman who owned the land across the way if he could cut a few of her trees to take to the mill for boards and she says yes. So he cuts a few trees, hauls them to the side of the road, and goes to get the truck to haul them.

Gets back and there's a neighbor standing there with his trees cut into firewood. He's flabbergasted, saying "But I got her permission to cut them down!" "Aye, but this land at the side of the road is mine and you didn't ask me!" "What the hell am I supposed to do now?" "Ah! Now you've asked me so I'll help you."

They go up, cut more trees, the guy helps him load the truck and get them to the mill.

Moral of the story: Nova Scotians will give you the shirt off their backs - but you have to ask. I found this wonderfully useful.

I also discovered that it's virtually impossible to remain awake as a passenger on a ferry crossing the Bay of Fundy. I don't know what it is. Coming out of the harbor it was fine. As soon as you hit open bay all the passengers fall asleep. Magic trick. You are getting sleepy...

saw a facebook post about the white 58 Chevy in American Grafitti . The transportation manager sold it to a local teen for $285. He kept it until 2015 when it was sold at auction to Ray Everham, a NASCAR commentator for $67k and he had it restored to the movie look by 2016. Said to be in a Georgia museum now.

I'll be down there 3 weeks from tomorrow! Assuming I survive moving the week of the 4th.

new house apparently passed inspections today so the town is issuing the CO, so the title work can be finalized and closing scheduled. Got movers lined up for the 2nd so all the closing stuff better happen or I will have a major problem!

I even get to pick up the spare truck (only way I could make the arrangements work). Mover wanted a big one so I am renting my first 26' U Haul. Should be fun. If a pair of 26' trucks isn't enough, somebody really doesn't know how to pack. I think it is overkill but only costs $10 more per day than the 15' model, so might as well go big!

    We took a 26’, a 15’, an S60, an Enclave and a RAV4 fully loaded lol.

Hopefully the weather continues for you. This has been the best June ever in all the years I’ve been coming. Outstanding!

when we came up here it took a 26' that the mover guy packed solid, a 15' (maybe 17) the week before that I drove up but it was not packed that solid, a stuffed RDX and 2 stuffed Mavericks (yes, I only have 1, the stuff left after the movers were done was more than expected so I had to stash a mav load in a storage unit and get it a couple of weeks later). We have more stuff now though I have some stashed at our sons house. So I really have no clue what we need! worst case, I have to leave some at the neighbors and come back for it! but should not be an issue having the UHaul staying with us (the movers truck will be going with them overnight).

I got stressed out just typing this.

2 U-Haul 26 footers should work just fine. That’s what I rented when I moved back to the Burgh from SC the first week of August in 1997.

I hired a crew of 3 guys to pack the trucks. It only took a day and a few hours to empty the house and pack the trucks. Since they packed it so tight I only needed a little more than half of the second truck but, like you, I wasn’t taking any chances for a few measly bucks.

Hello Fezo, nice to hear from you again.

The Tartan Motel! That wasn't yesterday. It was an early one and I believe the only accommodation available on that part of the St. Margarets Bay Road for quite a distance outside the city boundaries. Gone now apparently. Glad you enjoyed your time here. Cape Breton is quite beautiful and tourism is really its only big industry unfortunately now that the coal mines are closed. I was lucky enough some years back to develop an acquaintance with the fellow who spearheaded the development of the Cabot Links/Cliffs golf resort in Inverness on the trail, which was an old and incredibly ugly coal mining town until the mine shut down. He and his business partner turned it a golf/tourism mecca. Just an incredible transformation and now beautiful. My one regret was not buying some property there when he showed me around a few months before it opened. Nobody wanted it and I could have cleaned up.

Last night, drove the PHEV to the local inn that has one L2 CCS charger, which surprisingly was available. The two Tesla docks were in use, with two more Teslas waiting. My battery was empty, so I plugged in, jogged the .6 mile to the gym and pretended to work out. Jogged back, unplugged after 75 minutes and was at 7/8 full with 22 mile range. Free.
    What a country.

I'd rather buy a gallon of gas than go through that to get 22 miles!

This is a long Dennis O'Sullivan letter, but it is a fun one if you have time.
    QUESTION

Hi! It would appear that you only answer questions or solve problems in your column that make you look good. My story did not make the paper because it made you look like a guy that has his head stuck up the dealers - - - . It appeared at first that you were going to help me but you then dropped me like a hot tomato when I needed you most. My car was still under warranty at the time but you went along with the dealership’s assertion that I somehow tampered with the oil sample. The dealer was trying everything to get out of repairing my engine and at first you agreed with me and then you went rogue on me. Some time ago, you said that if you continue to have your car repaired at the dealership then they will go to bat for you if you have a questionable warranty problem. This statement alone tells me that you are in the pockets of the dealerships because why would anyone take the car into the dealership for repairs that are sometimes hundreds of dollars more than a regular garage for the same repair? Thanks for nothing but my lawyer sees a silver lining for me with this problem.

Why did you take the word of the dealership over mine?

    Letdown reader, Danny from Dundas

    ANSWER

I spent a great deal of time trying to assist you and all I wanted from you was the receipt of the last oil change which you couldn’t produce. In fact, you could not even produce any receipt for an oil change or any receipt for the purchase of engine oil to indicate that you changed the oil yourself. I then asked you for the name of the garage that had done the last oil change and you could not even give me that. I then told you to go to the dealership with a sealable type glass jar and ask them to take a sample of the oil from your engine oil pan. I then gave you a reliable place to take the oil to be analyzed. I had the dealership agreeing to again look at your claim if the oil test came back uncontaminated. I emailed you twice to find the results and you told me that they had not given you a finalized report. I thought that this was unusual so I called the place myself and found out that you have had the report for over two weeks. I understand why you did not tell me about the report because the report came back that the oil sample supplied by you was “new oil no contamination”. The oil that the dealership put in the jar for you was definitely not new oil so only you know what happened to the oil between the time that the dealership put the oil in a sealed jar and you then delivered it to be analyzed. When I found that out was when I told you that I could not do anything more for you. My reasoning for not pursuing your problem further had nothing to do with me being on the side of the dealership. Yes, I have said in the past that if the dealership is the sole service provider for your vehicle, they can use that to benefit their customers when a questionable problem arises, during or after the warranty has expired. In your case, this would have been very favorable for you if the dealership had been doing the oil changes for you.

It sounds like Danny knows how to manipulate a “sealed jar”. I was never given that opportunity when the XG 350 blew up. Claiming a fudged oil log sheet was good enough for my dealer.

It’s really not a big deal. We have no home charger and still it’s just a minor inconvenience to charge when needed. We just group it with other errands.

Case in point … a few weeks back I had to drop off some equipment at the Comcast store. There are chargers there. I threw the car on charge. Walked around the parking lot to the store, dropped everything off and when I got back to car it was 10 mins to 80%.

Not sure where you live… but I can’t get back and forth to get gas in 10 mins.

I will 100% say if you buy one to commute in everyday, a level 2 home charger is a must.

My Mazda dealer offered free oil changes for as long as I owned my MS3 so when my car was recalled for the smoking turbo issue there was no question about the service history.
I change the oil on the Club Sport more often than not, and I may do the same on the C43 as I can use the oil extractor which makes it dead easy.

Yeah, I can call any business in town, and they’ll give me whatever information I want about one of their customers. Also, I can call any oil analysis outfit, and inquire about someone else’s submission and whether they’ve processed it.

    Seems perfectly legitimate. 🤔

None of that happened... but, perhaps I didn't fully draw the picture. The Inn is on the way to the gym, ~1/2 mile away. So, while I didn't need the electrons (PHEV), I took a look at the charging station on the way to my destination, the gym. Since the charger was free, both in availability and cost, I took advantage. The short cardio workout to and from the gym? That's healthy, just ask any tennis player!
And this is a nice perk of a BEV/PHEV, (for me at least) there is still free fuel out there!

I change the oil on the Club Sport more often than not, and I may do the same on the C43 as I can use the oil extractor which makes it dead easy.

I’ve never used an oil extractor but I envision it as a benefit only if you can change the filter from under the hood. So, I gather your C43 has a top mounted oil filter, right.

Yeah, I can call any business in town, and they’ll give me whatever information I want about one of their customers. Also, I can call any oil analysis outfit, and inquire about someone else’s submission and whether they’ve processed it.

    Seems perfectly legitimate. 🤔

Dennis O'Sullivan's column is extremely popular and it is usually interesting. Not everything is fake news. He has great relationships with garages and people have had good results. I would say that considering his reputation, the fact that the garage and the oil testing facility wanted to protect their reputation, that the evidence was the guy couldn't prove his case, that Dennis solved the problem, and proved the guy was lying...just like Judge Judy does.
At some point you have to trust that there are decent people who aren't trying to scam you or pull one over on you.......civilized people are truthful. There are bad eggs but they are in the minority thank goodness.

    But that is just me.
Go through what? Choosing to plug-in for free fuel and get a warm-up jog before hitting the gym?
Yup. Planning on how to fill an hour...change clothes, plus the time to go there and back, pray there is a charging station free, etc. to save a gallon of gas. My time is more valuable than that!
Free, but we are subsidizing you road tax on gasoline. And kids still have to dig up lithium and other minerals. And no one really knows how we are going to get rid of these batteries when the day comes.
If I was buying a car now I think a hybrid is the way I'd go...a non-plug in hybrid. EV is OK for city only or short trips, for me, but everyone's needs are different.
Obviously full strength EVs are not exactly selling like hot cakes these days.

No arguments against the evils of child/slave labor, but as I'm sure you know, it's not just for battery elements.
I'm no expert, but batteries are already being repurposed, one use I've heard of is as battery arrays to power charging stations!
Lamentably, many things aren't selling like hotcakes (maybe even hotcakes?) these days, e.g. sedans and wagons (unless, of course, you subscribe to the theory that many SUV/CUV/SAV/insert more marketing gibberish here, are modified wagons). Which doesn't negate their usefulness or desirability to those that want and understand the benefits of owning said.

Agree with you that YMMV; it's your $, spend it as you see fit. Or, if you're like me, as your wife sees fit!

In anticipation of going to OBX next weekend, mounted the roof crossbars on the Explorer.
Cut the tape to open the box, which I bought many month ago, and the only thing in there were the crossbars.
No directions or tool to mount or remove them.
I figured I'll just use one of my sets of allen wrenches. Nope it's not an allen type bolt.
Looked in the box again and nothing in there.
For some reason I decided to check the glovebox and guess what? Tool and directions were in there.
Maybe it was included although the crossbars were not?
After about 30 minutes, I think they are perfectly mounted, front, back and side to side.
Will find out at the end of the week when I put the box on.

You cleverly gloss over the diabolical complexity of charging a PHEV. Some here would need to hire a guy to do it as the procedure is entirely beyond their skill set.

    Thanks for the confirmation.

The way I look at it is if you have to jack up the car and get under it to remove the filter, you might as well wrench the drain plug off while you’re under there. The oil drain plug is easier to remove than fiddling with a cartridge oil filter that’s under the car.

Unfortunately for me, both my cars have the cartridge oil filter under the car.

I agree. I can use an extractor on the Club Sport, but I can get at the drain plug by only raising the left side a few inches.

I don't get lying, I know I'm just not very good at it. I don't even try anymore because I just feel so guilty that I come clean right away. Was never very good at it but must admit, my twin had it down to a science! I just know that in our last year of high school, a bunch of lies he told our family came back to haunt him and the rest of the family in a big way. And unfortunately, I ended up being dragged into the whole thing because I just couldn't lie for him!
