Our good friends here in WW also have an amazing home in Court house. They keep wanting us to buy near them… problem I have is 1: giving up 2.75% and then 2: the schools just aren’t as good.

If we ended up in WW full time we would go private school most likely.

it was easier for us, since it was after the kids were out of school and we were looking to "downsize" anyway. Schools, no longer an issue (other than as they impact resale!)

It's just a house. don't like it, get another one! same as a car.

not likely to happen, but never say never. I didn't expect to be moving this soon, but not completely surprised.

I suspect you heard a dumb comment at the wrong time. Designing/building moving into/selling a house is a bit more involved than flipping a vehicle.

How old are your kids now? I’m sure giving up the 2.75% is going to be tough, but I’m sure you have a lot of equity in your current home and your shore place.

I’m not sure how happy or well your kids are doing in school, but I can tell you that after sending 2 of my kids to private school (public schools were a disaster for them) this past year (making a huge financial sacrifice and spending a small fortune), I can tell you that a good private school is 100% worth it. I honestly wish I could send my 15 year old son to private school. He’s smart, but I don’t think he’s getting the best education in the public school.

Why is it that 99% of the time when I try to have some fun on the lovely, tight two-lane, somewhat twisty back road home, there is a card-carrying member of the anti-destination league loafing along ahead of me?! I mean, I've got a gall dern BMW 6 cyl. 2 Series just chomping at the bit to turn that 30 mph minimum speed suggestion into a 45+ mph yeehaw fest!
Today's freakin' offender, a black Nissan Rogue. Who misread the posted signs and took 30mph as the speed LIMIT! The humanity!
Now I don't claim to be a skilled driver, a master clipper of apexes, but boys just wanna have fun!

Because the issue with two lane twisty roads is that you will always catch up to a car going slower than you on that road. Eventually you and that slow car will come across someone even slower.

That's why the long straight flat boring roads here in Northern Illinois are so great, plenty of opportunity to pass.

packing a house stinks. And when your better half has emotional attachments to "stuff" even worse!

but getting close to be ready for the movers 1st thing tuesday AM. We are way, way, way ahead of the pace from the last move. Unfortunealy been pouring rain today and will continue into tomorrow so getting the outside stuff (mostly the shed) done will be delayed.

You know what's even worse? Doing a home improvement project, a small one say like replacing the wooden deck stairs coming out of the patio door. And you planned it in great detail, measuring everything and working out what pieces of lumber you need cut to what exact length and you go to the home depot to get the material and the wife second guesses everything you did.

They are ten and eight. Currently the school system we are in is pretty good. The kids are doing well, so that weighs in the decision too.

No rush to do anything but if the right deal/place came around I could see it happening. Problem is to replace what we have at home down the shore is mega bucks.

my turn for a health issue. Wound up in the ER last night with severe abdominal pain. Was there from about 7pm till 2am. Long story short, the minor hiatal hernia I was diagnosed with a couple of decades ago has grown into a major one. The majority of my stomach is no longer where it should be. Surgery has become necessary. After the solid food was out of my stomach, the pain subsided for the most part, so they sent me home with some meds to manage symptoms while I try to get surgery scheduled. Fun stuff. On the positive side, at least I actually went to the hospital for once and they found a problem that is causing many problems for me for many months now (if not years).

Yikes! Hope you are able to get in for surgery soon.

@oldfarmer50 A few people around here won't appreciate that news!

brtw....there are under 70000 charging stations in the U.S. now. By 2030, the US Will Need 28 million EV Charging Ports to Support 33 million EVs.

They better get crackin on building those charging stations. Since they are all going to use the Tesla system some people may find their EVs will become the Betamax's of the auto world.

There are less than 200,000 gas stations in the US, and the number is declining. Charging g stations are quickly catching up. Many gas stations now have charging ports too.
Not clear which charger will win, but it will take awhile to shake out. Tesla just fired their entire charger placement team, so nobody knows if more will be built. There are also things called adapters . . .
28 million is a hilarious number. Between home charging and public stations EVs will get along just fine.
And just to note — there are still large stretches in the US where gas stations are in very short supply. Hasn’t stopped people from driving ICE vehicles or making road trips through those areas.
Yeh, they are really pouring in:
There are now almost 8,200 quick-turn EV stations across the country, or one for every 15 gas stations.
    Almost 200000 gas stations.
EV sales have fallen off, the people who want them got them, now the rest are waiting to see what comes along next. Hybrids seem to make most sense to most people at this time.

People can drive ICE cars where there are few stations because they will go 300 miles on a tank of gas......EVs probably under 200 and if you use an air conditioner, wipers, radio etc or if it is very cold you will be at around 150 miles......and if you run out of electricity you can't call for a can of electrons.

I had hiatal surgery in early ‘84. I can’t remember the name of the surgery but I think it was named for a German doctor who invented it. I found out years later when I had a kidney stone that surgery was only successful for about half of the folks who had it done and some had to have another surgery to correct the first one. Fortunately, I was one of the success stories. As a result of the poor success rate I was told they don’t do that surgery any more.

I hope your surgery goes as well as mine but you’re going to have to put on hold any strenuous work for a good while. I was off work for about a month and I worked in an office.

Maybe our poster buddy @mjfloyd1 can tell you more about what to expect.

I had an old hernia repaired in April. Had it since 1989 when it was like a third of a golf ball under my skin. Recently it was as wide as my hand and standing for even a short time was painful.
The surgery was done robotically thru 3 one inch incisions above my belly button and about a foot from the hernia. Took about two hours and when I woke up it was like waking up from a nap, it felt like nothing had happened. No pain at all. I expected it to hurt when the IV meds wore off but it never did. I took it easy for a month and still don't lift anything very heavy.

I started to say that I wish I had done it many years ago but the current technology did not exist then and I would have had a large incision.

@qbrozen, see if any surgeons in your area do the Nissen Fundoplication robotically. Only if the surgeon is experienced, not a newbie at it, the recovery and results are generally better than the other laparoscopic or "open" approaches. Good luck and keep your buddies here informed.

I learned the hard way when you know something is wrong but you chose to ignore it instead of getting it looked it, it usually ends poorly (or sometimes in the ICU). So I tend to err on the side of caution at this point. Usually.

It’s definitely nice not to have getting gas as one of my errands. Have had to get gas just once for the PHEV. And because of all the credit card skimmers (they don’t strike often but enough that I’ve quit using them) I have to make sure I have cash to fill up.

do the tap to pay terminals eliminate skimming, or have the crooks figured out how to steal from them also?

that is why I try to always use Exxon/Mobil or Sunoco, since I have their CCs (get a discount!) figuring if they ever get hijacked, not a big deal.

Generally, contactless is one of the safer methods of payment because of the encryption method (tokenization) financial institutions use. It's made it a bit of a bear on the backend when it comes to enterprise data management and transaction monitoring but the expenses there less than countless consumer fraud claims.

If we are discussing health issues, remember the accident I had about two months ago. Well I have been having back pains that started at that time that haven't really gotten better. The doctor gave me an MRI and it shows that I have an acute fracture in one of my vertebrae which is causing the pain. Got a appointment with the doctor to inject a cement like compound in there to heal the vertebrae and hopefully relieve the pain. :/

The problem is that plugging in your batteries each night will degrade your batteries faster, that is why they recommend running that batteries down to 20% or less before recharging. Also charging batteries past 85% will also degrade your batteries faster.

That doesn't happen with a gas tank.

I don't need or want to fill my gasser at home....I do it when I am going or on the way home. And I don't have to do it as often or for as long.
But the point we're making is that I can drive every day to/from work, run errands, etc. and plug in each night at home and start the next day with a "full tank".

With your ICE car, at the end of the week you have to find a gas station and fill up.

Oh, and the cost of your "fuel" just shows up on your monthly utility bill.

You can choose not to charge each night - individual preference. The app on your phone can control how full your batteries get, when do you charge.

Everybody who owns an ICE vehicle has to go to the gas station, at some point.

Hey, I own two ICE vehicles, and I like them. I just think that throwing out the baby with the bath water, when it comes to BEV, is short-sighted.

@qbrozen, see if any surgeons in your area do the Nissen Fundoplication robotically. Only if the surgeon is experienced, not a newbie at it, the recovery and results are generally better than the other laparoscopic or "open" approaches. Good luck and keep your buddies here informed.

Thanks very much for the tip. I looked into the surgeon they referred me to and he claims to specialize in robotic surgeries. I have an appt with him Wed morn.

No doubt, EVs work for some people. They are particularly good if you are only using them for short trips. But, that market is limited. Last weekend we drove 150 miles each way, that would mean I would have to stop and charge an EV somewhere to get back the same day, and even then it would be close whether I would need another charge up. With my gasser I filled up the day before the trip....on my terms, and I didn't have to stop and refill on the trip.
They aren't the answer for everyone and the sales figures prove that. If it is a cold day the range might be down to under 150 miles....especially if you fill it to 80% and have to find a charger before you reach 5%.

My Blazer EV has a range of almost 300 miles, and can be charged to 80% in about 15 minutes. That’s me picking up coffee somewhere, which I do generally anyway. You are really not talking about current EVs. And my previous Buick would not have been able to go 300 miles round trip either, so kind of a wash. If you don’t want to drive an EV, YMYV, but you don’t have current info on the new crop of EVs.

I think you'd be surprised by your assumption They are particularly good if you are only using them for short trips. But, that market is limited.

Most people drive less than 50 miles a day - I wouldn't say that is a limited market.

What's limiting is the lack of charging infrastructure for condos and apartments; folks who live in single family homes should be able to install a level 2 charger with little issue.

Also, the prices of BEVs need to come down. Kia is releasing the EV3 soon; 300+ miles of range and a starting price of around $30K. Same is true with the new Chevy Equinox EV.

Will this country convert to a majority BEV nation? Not in my lifetime.

I assume that only part of your stomach has gone up thru the diaphragmatic hernia and you are seeing a general surgeon rather than a thoracic surgeon? That would make sense given the less urgent timeline.

I’d definitely ask around about surgeon’s skill and outcomes. Robotic generally has less painful recovery

Gorgeous day, temp ~75, no clouds and a gentle breeze.
So topless I drove to donate blood and have a bite to eat post-bloodletting.
Have I yet mentioned that the M240 is good for what ails you? Love the seats, love the eagerness of the I6 to pull, love the color (threw on a quick coat of Zaino Z-6 before heading out. Instant shine-o-rama!), love the music playing on my jukebox!.

Pulled into Jersey Mike's just as a new looking 911 convertible was backing out; very similar color to my Estoril Bluey. Driver paid me no never mind, probably knew the humiliation he would have faced in a stoplight drag race.

It is ignorant to make assumptions. I have read articles and have heard from owners.
If they are so wonderful why aren't people buying them?
Why do the people I talk to say they aren't interested?
Why do they lose 40% of their expected mileage in extremely cold weather?
Why are school buses in Alberta Canada not able to complete their routes on a single charge as they were told they would do.....they didn't mention the drain cold weather causes.
How will people who live in homes or apartments without garages or with old wiring charge their cars at home?
Using the old I know what I am talking about and you don't know what you are talking about is not a discussion.
