I think it is important that each spouse has their own space. Even if it is just the garage and kitchen, to be sexist!

The new house we have has 3 bedrooms on the main level ... master bedroom, my home office (desk, bookcase and TV) and her "office" (desk, recliner and an exercise bike).

Garage is too small to turn it into a man cave.

I agree.  My second house was a 2 story colonial with the step-down sunken livingroom with it's own cathedral ceiling which extended beyond the second floor.  But it came with a full basement.  Except for the hot water tank and furnace room, the rest was my man cave.  Delightful!!  B)

So true. I built a house 6 years ago and it has an open floor plan with no real place to hide. I got married 39 years ago when I was 22 and my wife was 19. Do the math, now I'm 61. Oh, what was I thinking? During the summer it's no problem since we have a "summer camp" rental business on Lake Champlain and pretty much live outside by the lake, but this time of year cabin fever is in high gear. We are together a lot! I sometimes hide in the bedroom with a book or to watch TV. I did build a detached 3 car garage a couple of years ago and planned to make a man cave in the attic. I better get on it!!!

  • Didn't jmonroe use some sort of telephone pole wax that was like that?

I believe he used the Colonite insulator wax. I never tried it myself but I did hear great things about the gloss level.

"Wax" has undergone some major changes, first going from carnauba to synthetic sealants, and now to ceramic or quartz based coatings. The synthetics had longer life, somewhere around 6 months, but the gloss depth never matched natural carnauba. Still, I liked them and I stuck with Klasse and Zaino for quite a while. What they lacked, though, was the ability to protect the paint from swirls and from acid attack that could etch the paint. Even with a fresh coat of sealant, a single bird dropping could ruin the paint.

So, three years ago I heard about a new class of product that had hit the market, a coating that's not buffed out like wax. Today the coatings have evolved and there are many different manufacturers using slightly different chemistry, but with similar results. They protect against mechanical damage, like swirls, and acid damage, like bird droppings, and they last two years or longer. And they do work.

I applied my first coating over 2 years ago on the Impreza and today that same application is beading water like I just applied it yesterday. Amazing. And bird droppings have done nothing to the finish. More amazing. There are swirls that have developed from washing the car, but those are limited to the coating instead of the paint, so when the finish is eventually polished it won't be the paint being thinned out but rather the coating. I'm sold. The Outback, the Audi, and my WaveRunner are all coated now.

@graphicguy : My sympathies, hang in there. I’m single, have been for 6 years after being married for 27 years. There are definite advantages to each, I think the key is to be happy with your present situation, whatever that may be.

@abacomike : Really glad to hear you didn’t need the stents this time. Getting old is not for wussies, I’ll tell you that!

On the subject of waxes, I like the look of the carnuba, and I also like how easy the synthetics are to buff out. If I’m supplying the elbow grease, I go with the synthetic wax. If I’m paying someone else, I like to go with the carnuba.

Not likely, but I suppose it can't hurt to hope.

I was just reading through the long term test here on Edmunds of the 2015 F150. Very similar to my truck, only theirs is 4 wheel drive.

I agree with many of their points.

    1) The engine is fantastic. It is truly extraordinary what they have done with that twin turbo 2.7L V6 engine. The performance makes the truck a pleasure to drive on the highway.

    2) The load space, in the rear seat area, with both rear seats folded up and out of the way, is fantastic. One of the absolute best features of the truck is how much you can carry back there. And space for back seat passengers is better than any car (short of a stretch limo).

    3) Yes, the 5.5’ bed is too short. But the truck is already huge, if you keep the crew cab, and go with the 6.5’ bed (as they suggest), it becomes not just huge but enormous.

    4) They talk about how hard it is to turn this thing (really big turning circle), and how difficult to park in a parking garage. Both very valid points, and one reason my truck only has 2k miles after almost 5 months.

    5) I have to disagree about the gas mileage. They’re getting rather poor numbers, I am doing much better with mine. Four wheel drive may be a part of their problem. Having a bunch of different drivers, none of whom actually “own” it, probably leads to “drive it like you stole it”.

There are quite a few options today. Here are a handful:
    1. Gtechniq Cyrstal Serum Light - this is what I just applied for the first time to the Audi and I'm not sold. There are better options IMHO.
    2. Pinnacle Black Label Diamond Paint Coating v2.
    3. DP Paint Coating.
    4. Optimum Gloss-Coat Paint Coating - easy to apply but longevity needs to be proven. I have the predecessor on three of my machines (Opti-coat 2.0).
    5. Carpro CQuartz - I'll probably try this one next.
    6. Wolfgang Uber Ceramic Coating.
    7. 22ple VX1.

Hope they all go on by hand. Or I'll just stick with my Maguires tech wax. Pretty easy to do!

One nice thing about leasing. Don't need to worry about this. 1-2 basic wax jobs, and give it back.

  • Mike, with your short ownership cycles, I agree with Driver, just leave it alone. If you do wind up keeping a car for awhile, or bird droppings are a real problem in the condo complex, then I'd initially recommend the Optimum Gloss-Coat. It's the easiest to apply and gives nice results. The longevity needs to be tested, but still, it should go a couple of years between applications. If anyone reading this does happen to choose the coating path, let me know and I'll walk you through the process so you're prepped to get good results. The new coatings are genuinely amazing.

Mike, if you're up to it, I'd like to meet up in a few weeks. We'll be passing by your condo late morning March 14 on our way from Orlando to Miami. Maybe an early lunch or something? You can get me at tyhendrickson at yahoo dot com.

They do go on by hand, and the work is a whole lot less than a traditional carnauba wax since there's no buffing. The challenge is the prep. Coatings stick and don't come off without a dual action polisher. So, what you see is what you get, whereas a carnauba wax or old-school polish fills in light swirls temporarily. Today's modern car paint care technology is about making the paint perfect and keeping it that way, not hiding the defects.

Thank you all. I do appreciate everyone's posts regarding this....ummm....situation. @driver100, your link sums it up fairly well.

She and I had been together quite a long time. We then married almost two years ago, and since then, all these "I gotta do all these things I never was able to do before" things cropped up. Visiting China (again, she went there a couple of decades ago) was one of them. I couldn't go because of work. She has been a teacher for two decades so she has all kinds of vacation time she could use for this trip. She went. I thought going over the holidays for a month was a bit much, but agreed. When that stretched to 3 months (and still ongoing), I thought I had been patient enough and kind of gave an ultimatum. She's still there, with no sign of coming back. So, got my answer. Tough because we've been together for so long. But, c'est la vie!

Jmonroe's wax is called Collinite..http://www.collinite.com. It was originally used as an insulating wax for electrical components exposed to the elements. That expanded into boat waxes. Now, they have a whole line of waxes.

They last a long time, but can be a [non-permissible content removed] to buff out. You HAVE to put it on in thin coats. Good stuff, though.

I too like Klasse. But, still go to my old standby, Zaino.

These days, I just don't have time to spend a day, or even an afternoon washing, waxing and detailing my car....even though I've yet to find anyone who can do as good a job as I can. Still, it's worth it to spend $100-$100/year to have someone do a decent detain. That way, I can do a 30-45 minute wash/dry. Put some spray wax on it (synthetic) and I'm good to go. It helps that my sled spends it's sleeping hours in a heated garage, too.

Mike, glad to hear everything checked out. Get your dancing shoes on.

Was an exciting day in the driveway. When I started my 2012 Versa hatch in the cold rain at 6:30 this morning to head to the gym, It sure felt like it was misfiring on a cylinder. Didn't feel horrible, but I was pretty sure. About a half mile up the road, the CEL starts flashing a long sequence, then medium, then a short one, goes off and goes through the whole thing again. Turned around and got back home to call the shop and make an appointment. Today is pretty booked, so I OK tomorrow, and plan to drop it off tonight so they can have it early. About 11AM I decide to take it up (only 5 miles) in the daylight and catch the only bus that comes out my way during the day, or hitch a ride from the dealer. I start up, it's a LOT rougher, feels like a loss of compression/power and after a couple of hundred yards it's blowing whiteish smoke now too. I'm thinking head gasket, but this is out of the blue. Never any oil/fluid leaks, driveway is spotless. But I get it in the driveway and decide to have to let them know I'm sending it up via the tow. After it's gone, I go out to look at the driveway, still nothing leaked out at all. Doesn't really mean anything, but I'm looking for anything good at this point. Phone rings mid afternoon, they took it in to look at it... deep breaths...rodent-chewed wiring harness. Once they get that squared away and it will keep running, they'll check for any other issues, but this was SO sudden and out of the blue, I'm cautiously optimistic. I have a 15% coupon they had just emailed, so it's going to be about $275 for the harness fix. Will be the biggest one shot bill we've had on a car in the last 10 years. Guess I was due!

They've got no hope of upselling me on new muffler bearings or headlight fluid ;)

I guess I am not a perfectionist like some here. When I spend a couple hours to wash/clay/wax (Maguires tech cleaner/wax usually) I think the car looks pretty darned spiffy. Not up to Ty's standards, but makes my wife happy when I do hers!

I did have a pro detail once (last summer) on the RDX. that was a an Xmas present (gift certificate). That did come out really nice, Even the interior, so I would certainly consider having that done every so often. Though as I said before, not paying for that on a lease. 1-2 waxes will be more than enough for that. Will do one right before they go back to minimize chance of getting dinged. And because it is the right thing to do!

I feel the same way about being an only child; sometimes I missed having siblings, but most everyone I know has a crazy brother or sister that they can't stand...

As for marriage, I hit the jackpot almost 30 years ago; while we were dating she even located my first BMW! We came from similar backgrounds and were both in our late 20's when we married, so that helped I'm sure.

I've tried various wax systems over the years including some 3 step cleaner-sealer-wax deals. For my money the best by far was this:

    Plain old wash & wax.

Much better shine but I'm guessing it doesn't last as long. Perfect if you hand wash every week or so.

Iluv, I think if you actually drove that Datsun, you might change your mind somewhat. Certainly abandon any idea of making it a DD!

If I could get it for a song at the auction..that would work. For a very driveable 2nd car. I thought the Bluebird line ran well, good competent underpinnings, tossable. Same theory - lightweight so that the 1.3L 4-cyl. 86 hp engine can wind it out and pick it up and get it going.

0-60 in 14.2 seconds fast. :p I'm not addicted to speed - that oughta be pretty obvious!

Great jumping jehozaphats! A speed demon, to be sure. I seem to remember some diesel car, back in the day (Mercedes, I think?) that did a 19 second 0-60. Anyone remember what the old Volkswagen bug circa 1968 did?

The one spot that could be intrusive is the lane departure, which is an audible warning. If you're weaving in and out of lanes in a straight section of road and not using blinkers, then yes, the system is going to beep. In the curves I've noticed the system doesn't alarm, which is interesting.

I drove the kids Honda Odyssey from DC to Chicago. Several times on the PA turnpike in the mountains there was construction which left for the lanes being very narrow. Barricades to the right encroaching into the lane ment that to drive in the right lane you had to be in the far left of that lane which set the lane departure off.

Move over to the left lane and you had to do the same thing to allow for those in the right lane who are further left than normal and the lane departure system would go off.

Thank God you can turn that stuff off

That's because you're feeding them - a no-no in aviary psychology.  Once you feed them, they poop right where they live.  Dogs don't do that, but geese sure do!!!  :)

When I lived in Northern Illinois, I lived adjacent to 10 acres of wetlands.  We would get hundreds and hundreds of geese that literally terrorized some of our kids waiting for school buses.  One of my neighbor's used to go out in the early morning with his shotgun and would kill a dozen or so of the more aggressive geese that were bothering the children.  You would think these geese would get the message to stay in the wetlands.  Nope - they kept it up and continued to aggressively attack the kids and this neighbor kept killing them.

I was surprised he wasn't arrested by federal or state agencies - he must have taken out several hundred one year.  These geese are a real problem in many areas of the country.

Oh sorry, you were asking Ty."

Driver, I am looking for protection from the birds who fly down from Canada each winter and take a load of dumps all over my car!  Nothing personal, driver, nothing personal!  ;)
Mike, this will be you after you wax your car for the 1st time in your life:

sounds like here. My daughter is terrified of the dumb things after they chased her a few times. Made it a problem when she would go for a run! Needed to take our Lab. Him, they didn't like. When he would go tearing after them, they would go flapping away. Little did the evil beasts know, he just wanted to play, and if they ran at him, he would have hid behind me.

yet when people suggest any kind of culling, there is an uproar. By people that don't live where they congregate of course. I think they should be rounded up and deposited in the yards of the geese huggers.

    @driver100:

That was funny, driver!  But I wouldn't detail the car - I don't have the strength anymore to wash my car or apply wax or sealer.  I use Maguires (I don't remember the correct spelling) liquid polisher and cleaner whenever I find a bird turd on my car.  It removes the turd and leaves the surface protected.

Probably, I'll take it to a professional detailer and have them use what tyguy recommended.  I just want to protect the finish from the very strong sun down here as well as the bird droppings.

But that cartoon was very funny!  :D

    Aren't they good to eat?

Didn't Scrooge buy a big goose for everyone for Christmas? Even the ornery can be redeemed.

Speaking of ornery, I come out of Trader Joe's today, and notice that someone has whacked my rear bumper, and it now has a crack in it.

Rather hastily, I put a Sicilian curse on them (learned from my grandma), and of course you can't retract something like that---so I'm pretty sure whoever did this to my Mini will be dead in 2-3 days, tops. B)

If you're cooking goose, probably better have a big, big can for grease and Aba, I don' think your doctor would approve of it in your diet right now buddy!

Shifty, sorry about your car, but it is a "Mini" so maybe they didn't see it B)

I hate the thought of eating a goose.  Now a pizza with Xtra Cheese and pepperoni - now that's worth dying for!  :'(

I sure don't feel young.  I caught a cold and coughing terribly - probably caught this at the hospital.  Between the cold and a sore crotch from the insertion of the catheter, I am a mess.  I feel like an 80 year old - I ache all over - but I am alive and tomorrow is another day! :'(

Catheters aren't fun. Couple of days you'll be feeling better and off to that pizzeria !

and yeah, hospitals can wreak a little havoc on you sometimes. I'd say you owe yourself a vacation when this is all done, but heck, you're living near Miami Beach B)

Actually, I live about 45 miles NNW of Miami Beach.  Haven't been down there in over 20+ years.  I live close to Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach.

When I was a little kid, my grandparents owned a home in Coral Gables so I used to fly down to MIA several times a year (Christmas and Easter Breaks).  We always drove over to Key Biscayne where the beaches were great near Crandon Park.

South Beach was a blast years ago and the beach was clean and safe.  Now, you can't park on Ocean Drive (South Beach).  I remember the good old days when Miami Beach was a vacation paradise - not so any more.  The beaches up north here in the Pompano and Boca Raton/Delray area are nice.

Lastly, while not unexpected given the length of time that's gone by, but the wife has decided to stay in China for awhile longer (no time frame on returning). I have some decisions to make.

None of my business. But I am thinking that is not a good thing.
Nope...not a good thing at all!
That sucks. Don't make rash decisions and I got caught up with posts and you've been more than patient. I know it will work out for the best for you. Her loss.
