Very thoughtful and a bit heartbreaking, Mike. Fight the good fight, you have so many more cars to buy! Maybe you're actually on the 13th hole of 18! Plus, everyone's favorite, the 19th!

And I was so looking forward to playing the car game again. It's in God's hands now. We shall know more in a week or so. Thanks!
Mike, you remind me of a friend who has had a very tough life. He pretty well grew up on his own, and he has had a lot of bad breaks. But, he tries to be positive and make the world a better place. He always signs his emails with this saying, and I think this is like you:
"Often daunted, never defeated".
I was at the doctor this morning and received some "not so good news!" I had an ultrasound Monday morning of my liver. The results showed an unknown mass in my liver. They did blood tests this morning to check my kidneys to make sure I can tolerate the dye they use for the CT-Scan. I will have the Scan as soon as the blood test results are back.
As all of you know, I have had Hep C since 1980 from a blood transfusion. Hep C eventually causes cancer in its latter stages. None of the Hep C treatments were successful as you all know.
So now, it's a wait and see game. I texted the family and will talk to them tonight. It just never seems to end!
Oh man.....I don't know anyone who has been through as much as you! Seriously!
Hopefully they can pin this down and get it fixed!

When they said Ford GT I thought they were talking about a Mustang. But, I figured out it is something else after reading OF's post. So, I checked it out, only making 250 this year and next. Looks like this:
I would guess on this site.......we won't find someone ordering one of these.....oh, and I think the price is not known at this time.
Anyway, it goes against all the things I look for in a car....it is much too low and the windows look kind of small, if not for that I may have considered one.
I don't see that I need it for the 0.75 mi trip to Kroger. How does it do in snow and ice?
It doesn't, from my recollection of high performance sports cars. Usually people who own cars like that and live in tundra type environs just put a car cover over it and put it in hybernation in the garage for the winter.
@stever, I wonder if Karl still has his? New one is much more expensive, although he could sell the old one and make up for a lot of the difference.

the last version (2006-7 I think) were about 150-170 (MSRP) new. But now seem to be selling in the 300K range. Cool cars. I remember back in those days stopping at a local Ford dealer, and they had a dark blue on on the showroom floor. With ropes around it.

Just another car I can't get into or out of. Sharp though!
The May Car and Driver features a comparison test of the Focus RS, Golf R, and STI The RS one, the Golf R was a close second and the STI ran a distant third. As cool as the RS seems to be, I'm glad I didn't order one. It's quick but it won't separate any retinas, and I have some concerns about the long term durability of the torque-vectoring rear differential- which has an electronically controlled clutch pack for each axle. Then there is Ford's-and Subaru's, for that matter- penchant for voiding the warranty if they find out you drove it within a mile of a race track.
This comparison was of manual 6-speed "stick" versions, correct? I guess the Golf R is the only one of the 3 available with a faster speedier automated dual clutch version.
All three were manuals, but Car and Driver has tested a Golf R DSG; still not as fast as the M235i autobox, but pretty close. If one of my local VW dealers hired competent techs the R might have made it further up my decision tree. That said, it's nice to have a borderline sporty coupe again, as we almost never need a four door car these days.

by the time I get my next car, a 2 door would be fine. We have the RDX for people duty, but by then, we will be real close to true empty nesters. And 2 people travelling don't need that much room! More than something like a Miata, but a 2 series, or Mustang, is plenty big enough.
I just received some additional info on the 2017 E Class. As I shared a day or two ago, the first E Class built will be an E300 with a 4 cylinder engine producing 240 horsepower. Prices will start at about $53,000+ and are expected to arrive in showrooms this June/July.
In November/December of this year, the new E43 will be introduced. It will be powered by a 3.0 Liter V6 with a bi-turbo producing right around 400 horsepower. Pricing, nicely equipped, will be about $68,000.
The E43 is a new designation badge (originally slated to be badged as an E450) but with a V6 Turbo producing 400 hp, Mercedes decided to badge it similar to the AMG E63 and name it an E43.
That will be one heck of a car. This info comes straight from Mercedes-Benz Consumer Affairs. A 400 horsepower 3,0 Liter V6 producing that kind of power while still getting 19/30 mpg city/highway. Amazing!

Personally, I like the idea of E400 or E450 better....rolls off the tongue better than E43 - and sounds more impressive.
So does that mean the V6 engine mine has won't be available - 330 hp, and I will have to move up to 400 hp? I wouldn't say I have enough hp, you can never have enough, but, it sure seems to suit my needs 99.9% of the time.

Be careful what you wish for. I enjoyed my 2008 bmw 328 Cabriolet, but not much room in the back seat and almost no trunk with the roof down. There are times when you have to pick someone up, or when you see a sale on a TV and you have your tiny car that you thought would be fine....and you wish it had more room inside.
A couple told us about their trip to Florida when their kids were about 13 and 11. The kids wanted them to rent a Mustang convertible, so they did. They each had a suitcase....when they opened the trunk, there was only room for one suitcase. Everyone had to sit in the car with a suitcase in their laps!
One of our ex-editors got one years ago - more in the $150,000 range iirc though.
I remember that. I followed his story with the GT. He had moved from his CA home and cashed in before the tech bubble. Can't recall his name off the top of my head. Enjoyed reading his blogs about the GT, though.
I saw a few for sale some time ago. Used, but they were almost affordable. Looks like they've appreciated quite a bit over the last few years.

Pontiac 6000 STS. I remember it raised the eye browns of Car and Driver because of how much they liked it. But, that was still in the era of GM morass and just because it was a good car, it was not necessarily something you'd want, given its probable troublesome nature.
I had a business colleague who had one. At the time, I had a 325is (this was late '80s/early '90s). He used to insist on driving when going to lunch because his car had more room. I obliged, but the 6000 WAS NOT close to my BMW as far as a driver's car. It might have been good for a GM car, though.
None of us here have enough HP. Still, there is nothing I've owned in the last 10 years that I would consider inadequate in the power dept. Again, I love these little, torquey turbo 4 cyl motors from Caddy, BMW and Mercedes. They are amazing performers and very efficient, too.
I was driving back from the airport last night from a conference in San Antonio (one of those cities that is worth a special trip, if you're looking for somewhere to vacation). Jumped in the CTS and was reminded of what people say about the cars in the E/5/A6/CTS vertical. Great handlers, good power, wonderful suspensions, all the goodies anyone could possibly want....all in the same packages.
It almost comes down to "pick the style you want, you won't be disappointed in any of them" type of choice.
Driver, the pics you posted of your E are stunning. Hard to argue your love of the car.

In Canada, it might be badged as an E400 or E450. They might not even offer an E43 in Canada. You can check with MB of Canada to see what the will have coming out in a V6. They may offer it right away. You know that US MB's are quite different from those shipped to Canada from Germany.

GG, thanks for remembering that Pontiac model. With an E400, Pontiac 6000, I am just wondering when the car companies will outdo themselves and come out with the 80,000 or the 800,000 model.
I would agree, you can't go wrong with any of these cars ( E/5/A6/CTS) these days, I see ATS, CTS, A6's and love them all, very difficult choice when it is trade in time. I think it is smart that my MB dealer tries so hard to please, they are building loyalty in a market that can switch brands very easily.
From what Mike says it sounds like the V6 E43 or whatever it will be called won't be ready until late in the year.....that way I won't be tempted and hopefully we will be in Florida when it comes out....so I won't be able to buy it until the following Spring.
@abacomike let me add my positive thoughts in the hopes that your medical issues all work out.
Also, I stopped by the Hyundai dealer where I got my Elantra GT yesterday. Found out that the "Genesis" brand will require dealers to build new facilities (a la Lexus, Infiniti, Acura), and will not be co-located with existing Hyundai dealerships. My local dealership, being family owned, is passing on the opportunity to do so. They are the #1 volume Hyundai dealer in Colorado and, I suspect, not certain that dropping $x million into a new dealership palace makes economic sense when you would only have two models to sell initially.
So, if you decide to get the G60 (or G80, or whatever they plan to call it), you should have a shiny new facility with all the amenities you are used to from MB.

I am a bit pessimistic that a new dealership network for luxury Hyundai's will be operational for many years to come. Many auto malls as well as car dealership acreage areas in cities and towns are built out. Additionally, it is going to take significant effort to hire and train dealership management and sales personnel, not to mention service managers and service consultants, in the Mercedes-Lexus-BMW-etc., approach to selling and creating the embiance necessary to attract high-end customers.
The current dealership organization for Hyundai has a 1960's through 1990's mindset - "...what's it going to take to sell you a car today..."! I'm not saying there aren't exceptions - down here, the difference between Rick Case Hyundai and Coconut Creek or King Hyundai Are like night and day. Rick Case aggressively seeks educated men and women as sale associates and puts them through a multi-month training program. I sure didn't get that sense at the other Hyundai dealerships.
In short, for many dealership principals, this is going to be a difficult task. For others, they are already almost there.
@stickguy - I sat in a new Miata at the NY Auto Show. Scratch that off your list. It isn't even relatively "big enough." Death Trap comes to mind, but not "big enough."
@roadburner - the 2er is perfectly sized. Small exterior dimensions compared to what's out there today. I sat in the ///M2 briefly at the NY Auto Show and it just seemed to fit me perfectly. The cabin was airy and didn't feel cramped at all. It reminded me of the first time I sat in and drove a friend's Sport Package equipped 1995 E36 325is and fell head over heels in love with BMWs.
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2025 Camry SE AWD
I can sort of fit in the newest Miata. Getting in and out, not much fun. I would not mind a convertible, but only as a toy 3rd car. Decided for my car, which will likely also be the primary go places mobile, need something a bit more practical. Rear doors are just not essential.
Heck, your prelude would be big enough. A 2 series, sure. 2 door GTI. mustang coupe, maybe.
Will likely end up in a sedan or hatch though. Many more options. Plus never been a fan of long doors!
A friend had a Ford GT (bought before I knew him). He had it for a few years but hardly ever drove it because the value had gone up so much he was afraid to. Wound up selling it last year and bought a [I believe lightly used] lambo Huracan instead (and pocketed the difference) because "I don't have to worry about putting miles on the lambo."

In the summer of 1967 I was hanging out at the local drive-inn cruise place in Ashland,Ky like every night when a Ford GT40 drove thru the drive inn once, back on the street and screamed through the gears and back to the local Ford dealer 10 blocks away where it had been on display.
On any Friday night that drive inn had cars that would be millions in today's dollars. There were a couple of Hemis and a few Fords, but an amazing bunch of Chevys. Of the 200 1965 Chevelles built with a 396 2 were sold locally. There were 10-12 1966 Chevy IIs with the L-79, one was mine. Less than 700 1966 Chevelles made with the 396-375 but there were 6 or more around. Several 396-375 Camaros. Several Corvettes with 427-425 and 435HP. Plus a large assortment of GTO, 442s Buick GS and more.
Got a call from my doctor. My liver enzymes are elevated - higher than the last test 2 months ago. I am also dehydrated so he could not schedule the CT Scan until next week because of the dyes they use. The reread of the ultrasound images by the radiologist suggest that I have a 50-50 chance it is not a malignant tumor. Odds could have been better, but...what can I say?

I was promised a ride in it, but never got to collect.

Michaell,
So, what you're saying is, Edmunds reneged on your signing bonus.
They have probably made it up to you in other ways. Like extra weekend and night shift work, no holiday pay, stuff like that, right ?

So does that mean the V6 engine mine has won't be available - 330 hp, and I will have to move up to 400 hp?
I wouldn't say I have enough hp, you can never have enough, but, it sure seems to suit my needs 99.9% of the time.
****E400 reminds me Pontiac once had a model called the 4000....one of those FWDer cars - what were they called?

A couple told us about their trip to Florida when their kids were about 13 and 11. The kids wanted them to rent a Mustang convertible, so they did. They each had a suitcase....when they opened the trunk, there was only room for one suitcase. Everyone had to sit in the car with a suitcase in their laps!

I saw a few for sale some time ago. Used, but they were almost affordable. Looks like they've appreciated quite a bit over the last few years.
EDIT...looks like I'm late to the party...it was Karl and yes there was real estate involved. Great story, though!

Heck, your prelude would be big enough. A 2 series, sure. 2 door GTI. mustang coupe, maybe.
Will likely end up in a sedan or hatch though. Many more options. Plus never been a fan of long doors!

They need to give one to someone like me - I don't mind a bit of curb rash or people eating in my cars.
