    Beautiful car, @nyccarguy!

I'm finding the retirement conversation interesting. My Dad is turning 60 this year and is still working full-time, nearly 7 days a week, 80 hours a week, seeing patients. He seems to have no real interest in slowing down or stopping, even though it'd be in his best interest to cut back a bit.

My mom (RN) only retired at 75 because she couldn't see and hear well enough to take BPs. She loved working - I think that's a generation skipping thing.

As most of you know, I went into semi-retirement in July 2008 and finished up my "Senior Status" judge obligation in December 2014. I would love to be able to cover 3-4 dockets a month to supplement the car/motorcycle fund, but I'm no eligible as it's reserved for judges who couldn't get into Senior Status. My wife and I volunteer a bit and I work on cars or home projects in the summer and build models during the winter. I wish I could find a part-time job for the play-car fund, but I haven't found something to suit me yet.

Bob Newhart! Love that show. Is he still around?

Newhart has a recurring role as Professor Proton on The Big Bang Theory.- Proton is a down-on-his-luck former children's science show host. He died two seasons ago but returns as a ghost every now and then to give guidance to Sheldon.
He won an Emmy in 2013 for his portrayal.

I was running errands this morning and saw a Mustang Cobra convertible in dark blue just like GGs. Funny how I never noticed them before. Except for the little snake emblem it's hard to tell them from the secretary's version.

Am I satisfied with my daily life? No! I wish I could do more, but I just can't.

    The lament of every senior.
And one reason why I am still working, and going to the gym 3 times per week. Because I still can, I am able to do so, and I don’t want to lose what I’ve got.

When I signed up at LA Fitness last November, the lady asked me what my goals were. “Do you want to lose weight, become stronger, build muscle mass, …”

I replied that I just wanted to keep what I’ve got, thank you very much! Which gets harder with every passing year. Mike has been stricken with a whole series of medical aliments, he absolutely cannot help what has happened to him. Most of us can maintain for a lot more years just by being active, mentally and physically. And speaking of being active:

As to being alone but not wanting a wife it sounds like you're a good candidate for a sugar daddy relationship. (Just kidding)

If you’ve got the money, she’s got the honey! And it's very good exercise.

Thank-you @sda & @28firefighter for your kind words about my Prelude.  It still does look good for a car that has been out of production for 15 years.  I'm sure @tyguy would cringe at the stone chips, door dings, & various other imperfections if he saw the car up close.

@oldfarmer50 - the Prelude was my daily driver from 2002 - 2010.  I lived in Manhattan & parked it on the street every night for about 2 1/2 years.  I put snow tires on it and drove it through the winters without issue.  Once my wife and I decided on kid #3, we knew we'd have to acquire a larger vehicle than the 2010 Acura TSX she was driving.  We bought our Pilot in May 2011.  Instead of trading in the TSX which was 1 year & 9 months old, we decided to keep it for me to use as a daily driver because the Prelude had well over 100k miles by then.

    Car Buying Simplified

An older couple returns to a Mercedes Dealer where the salesman has just sold the car they were interested in to a beautiful leggy, busty blonde.

I thought you said you would hold that car for us until we got back with the cashiers check for $75,000. the old man whined. She told us you sold it to her for $65,000. and you told us not a dime less than $75,000.

Well, what can I say, said the salesman, I mean, just look at her. She had the ready cash and I just could not resist.
Just then the young woman came up and gave the keys to the older couple. Here you go mom and dad. I told you I could get that price down.

It's not you because I've had that problem for about 2 months. Look at how I have been posting.

About a week ago the editing functions started working again. Maybe they fixed it earlier than that but that is when by accident (don't know what I did) I saw it working again.

Don't let the Mod's try to tell you to get the premium edition to this site because that just means higher dues.

@jmonroe - it needs a wash 1st before I can wax it.  The car has been sitting outside now for about 5 years since I moved to CT.  It got a spot in the garage before I had the chance to wash & wax it.

Immediately after I pushed the retirement button I went to work as a volunteer at our local Food Bank. I work Monday evenings from 5-7 and Tuesdays and Thursdays from around 9AM to 1PM. I really enjoy doing this and I deal with all kinds of clients. We get it all. We get people who speak no English, Homeless people and a lot who just made some wrong decisions or had a streak of just bad luck.

Most are friendly and talkative and being a "people person" myself I really enjoy dealing with them. I try to brighten their days whenever I can. Some have a very bad life. This can be hard physically sometimes too and this I don't mind.

I also joined our local Kiwani's club at the same time and I get involved in fundraisers and other community projects. In our club wi have our Mayor and Police Chief and a lot of other professional people that are friendly as can be.

I try to hike or walk at least 30 minutes a day.

Were it not for these activities I don't know what I would do!

GG, how long will you wait before you call the owner back? Or is this the one and done offer with no wiggle room? I'd be dying a slow death at this point waiting for him to call me.

When I was in the business I had a customer scare the living "stuffing" out of me one night in a red SH Prelude.

I knew they were fast but I had no idea how fast until he got behind the wheel. He zigged around semis and had it over 100 MPH. I can't repeat what I yelled at him but it involved having him pull over so I could drive it back to our store.

I was both scared and TICKED and he knew it! He did come back a couple days later and bought the car.

Great cars. The only thing I don't like about them is the rear visibility which is no worse than a lot of other cars now.

Stuff happens. The only way to totally avoid stone chips and such is to not drive, and that would be a real shame with a car like that. It's great to see a Prelude that hasn't been turned into a ricer and hooned into the ground. I think it looks terrific and shows pride of ownership. Red is such a great color for showing upkeep. It's one of those colors that can really look bad at 14 years if neglect, or bring attention to a maintained finish.

I guess the gastroenterologist wants to do a biopsy on the tumor anyway.  My primary care physician is not thrilled with that decision because of the blood thinners I'm taking.  I have a lot of thinking to do now about that biopsy.  He said because of my history, it is a necessary procedure.  We shall see.

    Good one houdini.

I met my friend today who has the 2015 Audi R8. He said he picked up his new car, drove off the lot. When he was about 3 blocks away he realized he left something in his trade-in car....so he drove back to the dealer. When he drove in the salesman was outside and saw him drive in....the salesman said to my friend, "Are you still driving that POS, isn't it time for a new car?"

That's a tough one Aba. All you can really do is research both sides as best you can on places like Mayo or Johns Hopkins to try and get some feel about both sides and I guess take a swipe at probabilities. It appears there is no one right answer and unfortunately that kind of stuff only becomes more frequent as you age. Good luck!

I've been in the same situation taking a blood thinner. A couple of simple blood tests can be used to check your clotting time (prothrombin and INR) to gauge the safety of surgery.

I am on Eliquis which is very different from Coumodin.  I think I have to be off Eliquis for at least a week before any surgical procedure.  I will have to talk with the doctor about it.  Thanks for your link - more info always helps.

Don't mess with old people !!

Houdini stole that joke from yours truly - I was saving it for a dull evening and Houdini let the cat out of the bag.  He just beat me to the punch - Houdini is too sharp for me!   I bow to his royalness and concede the joke! :D

Yes, I found that joke in Mikes computer files. Lots of interesting stuff in those files. One of our hosts was kind enough to share their ability to remotely access any of our members computer files

I would tend to go along with my primary physician's thinking.

I'm watching the end of the Movie Viva Las Vegas which involes a car race through the desert. Every 30 seconds there was a major fatal crash. The drivers were like maniacs. It was easy for Elvis to win because everybody else went off a cliff. Pretty unrealistic.

I should mention I'm home with a cold or something. Otherwise I'd never watch Elvis.

I got a chuckle after reading this:

Mr. Harper* was known as a good negotiator. An automobile dealer once said of him, ''I've been selling him cars a long time and he only allows me enough profit to buy a hamburger and not a steak.''

*John D. Harper, was CEO of Alcoa until 1975

For sure after this weekend, there will be an empty garage bay at my house.
We are giving the 2013 Escape to my younger daughter.
My truck barely fits as things are configured, so it's easier to leave it outside.
Wife and I are considering something with a manual trans, but it's not a given.
We like having an extra car around. I'd like to stay around 25k or less.

What about a Mazda 3?  Good ratings and great looks.  Definitely should give it a close look!

Next year I will be giving the 3 a serious look again. I wonder when they are going to come out with an updated version?

my son has decided to get a 3 next February when his lease is up on his Jetta. Unless he gets a hoped for promotion (and of course raise to go along with it) in which case he will almost definitely cave and splurge on an Audi!

The Mazda 3 is a nice car in its own right, but that's not exactly what @explorerx4 has in mind

Funny thing with the Mazda 3. I was seriously considering one - an s with a stick. Put a guitar in the hatch to test and while it fit across it didn't leave too much more room for anything else in the hatch. I end up with the 5, not even thinking it would be narrower than the 3 but it is. You can't fit a guitar across. Minor inconvenience and with teenagers still about I'm sure the van will come in handy but my heart isn't really into it.

Good thing for me I have the Miata.

I don’t have any tattoos on my body, for the exact same reason you don’t put bumper stickers on a Ferrari.

What happened to your mustang search? Is that a definite no go?

  • Hey here's a question.

Is it still possible to push start a standard shift car with fuel injection? Probably not on a modern car because of all the computer systems but how about an old throtle body FI system?

Interesting. According to a little Internet research this is possible even with FI, provided there's enough battery power to cycle the fuel injectors. Might be worth an experiment, but rather than a push start I'll let gravity do my pushing

Here in FL, the only way to let gravity do the pushing is to have your car topple into a sinkhole that is several hundred feet deep.  You guys in Colorado or upstate NY are so used to going up and down mountains you forget us FL residents where the highest "peaks" are garbage dumps (200 foot hills) and unless you own a dump truck, NO TRESSPASSING if you know what I mean!  :o

I don't get the love for the 3. To my eye it looks unattractive and mis-proportioned with an overly long snout. And the NVH issues are well known even though the reviewers always gloss over them thanks to their love for its wannabe sporty-car aspirations. I think there are many better options.

We don't have landfills - but we have fill-ups to create hills.  Here in FL, if you dig down more than a few yards, you hit water!
