Mike, the landfill that I'm familiar with in your area is the one across from the indoor flea market that used to be a mall, better known as the Flea. I can't remember the road it's on but it's just a step away from the Florida Turnpike.

My routine when I'm dragged there is to buy a bag of cashews, sit down and wait for Mrs. j to tire herself out then drive back to Delray Beach. A pretty relaxing visit for me, really. :D

I can’t remember where I posted about putting my Cadillac up for sale on Craigslist, and looking at minivans as a potential replacement. Shouldn’t matter, I think most read both (Cars & Conversations and CCBA).

I had the day off today, so I went down to Hertz Used Car Sales to look at Minivans. They showed 3 Chrysler Town & Country, 1 Nissan Quest, and 2 Toyota Siennas. I sat in one of each, but I didn’t drive any of them. To tell you the truth, I was rather put off by the condition of the vehicles. All 3 that I looked over and sat in were all 2015’s, one model year old. And they were not what I would call “clean”. One actually had a broken windshield, crack all the way across. I asked the salesman if they would replace that before selling, and he said they would. But he didn’t sound 100% confident about that.

Another one was missing the panel that covers an overhead storage compartment. Rather obviously broken off, missing, gone. And this on a one year old model, where they are asking (no haggle) price of approximately 78% of the TMV for a brand new 2016. And they all had scratches, scrapes, scuffs – exterior and interior. Miles from 35k to 40k.

It’s not clear to me why anyone would purchase one of these instead of just buying new? Maybe someone who is a real tightwad, and doesn’t care about the condition of his vehicle?

Now this is a real car! 77 Mercury Grand Marquis, 460 V8, deep dish wheels. I can still remember Emmylou Harris singing Luxury Liner playing on the 8-track. One of dad's favorite cars.

    Any woodworkers here?

My mom is working to sell off the wood working tools my dad accumulated over the last 30 or so years, and hoping to get a fair value put on them.

The two items in particular are a drill press and a table saw. I don't know anything about them, other than they are old but in good working condition.

I know that's not a lot to go on ... but, anything helps.

Depends on what brand they are, and, of course, the overall condition. A worn out table saw can't cut straight anymore, so......

I live about a mile from The Festival Flea Market - world's largest indoor and air-conditioned flea market.  And yes, they are still dumping garbage there.  There are two more like that one off the Turnpike in the West Palm Beach area.

The one in Pompano Beach is on Sample Rd.

Let's not get technical Hank, of course I was talking about the flea market but Mike brought up landfills in Southern Florida and this was the only way I could relate to them. OK, still friends ? :p

PS: I don't know why they call it a flea market because everything in that joint is new. However, almost all the shops other than the ones on the outside walls are tents. So, maybe this is why they call it a flea market, like I said, "better known as the Flea". You'd think they were giving stuff away in that place because it is ALWAYS jammed especially on rainy days. In fact it is so jammed on rainy days, I'll only go there when the sun is shining so I can find a spot on a bench to sit down on and enjoy my cashews while Mrs. j shops till she drops. :s

Maybe Mike has the real answer as to why it is called a flea market.

Not only that but if renters abused the interior so badly imagine what they did to the drivetrain.

What about a Mazda 3?  Good ratings and great looks.  Definitely should give it a close look!

I don't get the love for the 3. To my eye it looks unattractive and mis-proportioned with an overly long snout. And the NVH issues are well known even though the reviewers always gloss over them thanks to their love for its wannabe sporty-car aspirations. I think there are many better options.
I disagree to some amount ab. I like a long snout and the 3 Series gets one honsetly, with an inline 6 which is probably superior to a V6, technologically speaking. I do think the C Class is a little more sophisticated, but the bmw is more of a driver enthusiasts car, unless you are roadrunner.

The A4 is less sophisticated than the bmw, but it is fun to drive....a little rougher around the edges for refinement.

I think the 3 Series is good if that is what you are looking for - style wise the 3 Series, A4, C Class ATS and CTS are all beautiful, just a matter of taste.

After the Escape is delivered, I'll have an empty garage bay and probably a need to fill it with something.
Not sure if I want go somewhat lux or small and sporty.

Henryn, you did post it here, and we all loved your Caddie. I imagine most minivans are used as work horse vehicles, that is the main reason people buy them. You can probably find a used one in good shape, but, it won't be easy.

I think you will have to get creative and check the private ads and possibly word of mouth. people who trade them in are usually getting rid of the old one that doesn't have much life left in it, and are picking up a new one.

I know the 2 Series drives well, but the looks and interior quality don't do it for me. Frankly, for less money the Golf R has an equal interior and I'm trying to find out if the drive is equal too.

I drove the TTS during my lunch break. Drove great, though the DSG was reluctant to snap quickly from slow or no speed; might be turbo lag? Seemed like DSG programming to me though; maybe break-in programming as the car had only 60 or 65 miles. Really felt light like an aluminum car would. Really should have the 7-speed perfected unit, read the TTRS is getting the 5-cylinder and the 7-speed DSG! They don't want to deal beyond the Audi Club discount, whether ordered or taken from inventory.

@PF_Flyer is the pro - I'm on my third tablesaw and the contractor (portable) types can be had new for around $300. The old saws have a following because they have cast iron tops. Trashed out versions go for $50 and I think $150 would be toward the high end, assuming it's a typical kind of older "Sears" saw.

Harbor Freight sells drill presses for $50 and you get what you pay for. Someone who knows what they want would pay that or more for a decent used one, but people who don't know will go new for $50 and then regret it if they actually get into woodworking.

Went car shopping today, details over in CCBA.

  • It's been a little wet around Colorado this week, nothing like Mike has experienced in Florida, but rainy still. While I'm not a fan of the optical qualities of the paint coating I recently I applied to the Audi, it does bead water quite nicely.

As I drove out of the parking lot and made my first turn, all that water rolled off the flat surfaces in a waterfall. Only the smallest of rain drops stuck to the paint as I drove home.

Beautiful, Ty.  I need you to move here so you can keep my car that good looking.

As for weather, the last two weeks have been gorgeous - simply perfect resort weather.  It's been dry (low humidities), no rain, lows in the lower 70's at night and highs in the mid-80's every day.

Might be a bit tight for four sets of skis. We did three people and tele gear a lot back in the Tercel days and that worked fine with one of the split rear seats down. Canoeing too (lots of gear had to go up in the canoes though).

The Mustang did borrow a page from BMW's current marketing strategy; you have to spend several thousand dollars on options(V8, Performance Package, Recaros) to get a legitimate world class performance car- just like you have to do with the 3 Series or 4 Series. And to make it seriously capable you still have to add factory upgrades once you get it home- the FRPP Track Handling Pack in the case of the Mustang, the M Performance diff in the case of the Bimmers.

    Good assessment!

I have an Austrailian "Mate" who has been telling me for years how coveted a V8 Mustang is over there.  It gets the same respect on the road as a Porsche or Ferrari.

I can imagine with the long straight roads in the Outback any muscle car would be coveted. Can you just see yourself blazing along a straight road at 100+ for 1000 miles?

Wasn't the recent Pontiac GTO a Holden?

quote: "Can you take 7500 cash it's all I got " : unquote

    Oh, boy.

Hey, at least I got a message about it! First one, after a week! I think I'm going to be keeping this one for a while.

Hey if you're willing to haggle you can drive it up to NY and I'll trade you one of my fine antiques plus all the money in my penny jar. It's all I've got....honest. (Note to host: the emoticon tool bar is missing on my screen)

I'm assuming that first offer was a sandbagger who is setting you up for his buddy who will swope in and offer $8000 hoping you'll jump at it. You also might get an email from a single mom or disable vet trying to play on your sympathies.

I am not unfamiliar with buying and selling cars on Craigslist. Years ago, yeah, allright, decades ago, I used to sell my old cars through newspaper classified ads. Then it was Greensheet, then Craigslist.

Craigslist seems to have devolved into being the lowest common denominator, and a terrible place to try to buy or sell (cars or anything else). Recently, I was looking for a car stereo installer, and I checked Craigslist. Serious mistake, mayhem and confusion and crooks. Last year, I was able to weed through the madness and find someone to replace my garage door at a very nice price. But I did spend quite a bit of time weeding through the garbage looking for that one gem.

I think Craigslist may have outlived it's usefulness. Someone with a better idea needs to come along, and completely revamp the whole idea of online buying / selling / trading.

I sold two cars on Craigs about two years ago up in the UP. (The Subaru actually sold from a sign on the window though). I think it depends some on your area. Haven't tried buying or selling here, but I can't imagine that people are any poorer here than they were in the UP. Oh, also sold my MIL's boyfriend's truck up there for $800. They knew the buyer so they didn't mind waiting two weeks while the buyer headed out in the woods to log some stumpage to raise the cash.

Meanwhile here's a great site for finding used cars. :D

I don't think the sellers on CL are necessarily more crooked than your general newspaper ads. Just exposes you to all the dishonest people in the country rather than local crooks. Your next door neighbor could pull a scam on you just as easily.

When I bought the Lincoln on CL there were a few problems that the seller hid but for the price I paid and the milage I've gotten (25k so far) I can't really complain. If the car blows up after I get another 7-8k mikes out of I'll consider I got my money's worth.

Very few people sell a car because it was running TOO good.
