driver, thanks to you, I am putting the C class (your style) back up on my list for next year. By next November, 2014s should be getting pretty cheap (relatively). Out of warranty though, which is an issue.

Oh boy, the joys of owning a German car out of warranty. :'(

    jmonroe
Really? So far this year I have spent a whopping $114/month on non-warranty maintenance and repairs for the four BMWs I own.
Yes really. I know you like and will defend BMW's till your death and there are always exceptions but I like the odds of not owning one out of warranty.

If I want a car out of warranty I'd much rather have a Honda, Toyota and maybe even a Hyundai product and the stats back me up on that. I know German cars are getting better and have made strides moving up the reliability charts more than the other brands I just mentioned. The German brands could not have moved down too much. It would be almost impossible for Honda and Toyota products to move up the reliability charts as much as the German cars have.

The bad thing about being at the top is that there is only one way to go and so far that has not been too much of a problem for the brands I've mentioned.

This reminds of the days when I was in school and got an occasional 'A'. As much as I tried, I could never do better than that. Now, getting my favorite grade of a 'B', I knew there was room to improve and sometimes I could pull it off.

    jmonroe
Here are the top 10 cars that will get you to 250000 miles. There are a few I would consider, if reliability was the main reason for buying a car.......but, since we only get one trip through this life as far as I have been able to figure out.....I want to (excuse the pun) enjoy the ride.
TOP 10 CARS THAT WILL GO 250000 MILES
The only one on that list that surprised me is the Chevrolet Avalanche. How the hell did that happen? That almost makes me question the credibility of that Forbes listing.

    jmonroe
I've actually seen a few of these Avalanches with WELL OVER 250,000 miles. They just keep going. Indestructible.
My nephew sold his Avalanche last spring. He loved it - perfect for his kayaking and camping, but lots of electrical stuff kept breaking and when the transmission went he dumped it for $500.

Pretty sure he was pushing 300,000 miles on his.
The guy who had me as the best man at his wedding lo those many years ago swears by Chevy Avalanches (and is excited about the fact they're going to be produced again). He's had 3 of them....all stone reliable. He used the daylights out of them, too.

Separate topic...been watching the Blues Brothers on TV tonight. Ain't nothing better!

Where do you get that Avalanches will be produced again? That would be news to me, although very good news as my '05 was one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. I'd be pretty excited about an Av that was updated to something beyond 2007 standards (my main motivation for defecting over to Ford in '13)
Could be an unreliable source, but one of my best friends is a plant manager at a place who makes parts for Chevy. He said they're sending his plant drawings to bid on parts for the new Avalanche. Let me see if I can get more info from him.

Escapes and Mariners had the slot for a cabin filter, but it didn't necessarily come with a filter installed.
Our 2004 was like that. There was something referencing it(if equipped?) in the owner's manual.

They'll fare well there as long as they are garaged - and the people who buy those usually have a garage. I also think "retired doctor" when I see such cars. It also often speaks to the background of the person - leasing a new MB just requires a bit of cash flow, but keeping an old S-class in pristine condition can consume big chunks of money at once.

I see 80s and 90s Mercedes a lot in Florida. They last, and a lot of retired people who don't want to trade in their cars. Often when I see an old one in great shape I think the owner was probably a real estate agent or something, and that he bought it his last good year in the business before retiring.

I'm glad someone else picked up on that. And to think, the guy probably got paid for that trash of a write up.

And all this time I thought I couldn't write. It took me three tries in 5th grade and I just couldn't get it back then.

Oh well, there is still hope for me yet in my retirement.

Not arguing with you but @jipster's write up said, in part, "There is a checklist at the Ford dealership, where I took her car for oil changes, they marked it was checked." So, I guess that means they checked to be sure it wasn't there. :o

My guess is the article was either run through translation software or English is the author's third language. Reminds me of nigerian prince emails.

In these days of offshoring everything (it'll trickle down and help us all, just wait!), there's a lot of media copy that is also apparently sent away to be produced (I'll wager in India or Philippines), then published like it is from here. I even see it now and then from local TV news sites.

I don't want to pry but did you have to pay the full, around $600 doc fee or maybe even more, when you bought your CPO Benz?

I have heard so much about how it is a snake pit buying a car in Southern Florida I just have to ask if it is all true.

I played tennis with a neighbor friend today. He has a 1986 red bmw. He has over 200000 miles on it and the only thing that needed a repair was a water pump and his odometer. He said he has a friend who has gone through 5 trucks in the time he has owned his bmw.. One point he made was repairs are expensive when newer because you usually take them to the dealer, once they are old the indie garages charge the same rates as they do for other cars....and the dealers don't want to work on them.

You're right, I could have bought a new tire and given it a shave for around $30 but that would have left me with 4 tires with around 40% tread life. However, spending around $400 and getting 4 new tires with 100% tread life is a better deal. While 5th grade English/writing may have been bad for me, second grade math wasn't.

As for trading Mrs. j's Subie and buying a "2014 C Class", like you suggested...lets just say that ain't never going to happen until I can take a left hook better than I have so far. :'(

Well the wife and I got ourselves early Christmas presents yesterday. We went and upgraded our phones and our plan, I went to Galaxy S7 and my wife went back to the iPhone. My wife got the iPhone because the kids have iPhones and she wants to facetime with them. My wife also grabbed herself a tablet that they had for 99 cents (but it adds $10/month to the plan). With the new plan we are getting the same talk and text a bit more data and about 25% less (including the cost of the phones which we got at a discount for trading in our old phones and the cost of the tablets plan).

One thing I got was the wireless charger which I really like, just lay the phone on a small disk and that's all. Also the S7 comes with free virtual reality goggles so I'll see how those work however they need to be shipped to me before I try them .

I don't believe the story is legit, in the same way that similar online "publications" over the past few years would write about upcoming vehicle launches that weren't confirmed. The new Bronco was one of them, although that one eventually got the green light so who knows. I'd be interested in what @graphicguy's contact knows about it.

Those are among the best BMWs ever made but I still think you should jump him and inject him with truth serum. B)
I had an '86 3 series. Never had a problem, except on snowy days when it turned into a jet ski.

You said, "My wife also grabbed herself a tablet that they had for 99 cents (but it adds $10/month to the plan)". I remember, and do I ever remember, when I was taking 5th grade English/writing, tablets were about 10 cents without a plan adder. And I thought @driver100 got screwed when he bought his 2014 CPO Benz. :o

OK, got it. I'm the opposite. I may be the only person to get under 20 mpg in a Mini Cooper. I have calmed down, though. I'm up to 24.

I'm ashamed to admit that I average that on the Mustang.

I got that and more in the E400, and I almost never have auto off/on working.

You misunderstand, I'm not bragging, I'm confessing. :'(

Oh I see....you mean you got a lead foot!

No, not at all. What I'm saying is I don't have enough of a lead foot to do that car justice. If I did, I'd be getting 15 mpg like Ford intended.

    OK, we'll take that.

    Best $200 I ever spent!
I don't want to pry but did you have to pay the full, around $600 doc fee or maybe even more, when you bought your CPO Benz?

I have heard so much about how it is a snake pit buying a car in Southern Florida I just have to ask if it is all true.

    jmonroe
It's true, $699 to be exact. If you want to play you gotta pay!
So considering that every dealer is going to hit you with that charge do buyers in a FL figure out the value of the car and then deduct $700 when making an offer or do Valuation tools like Edmunds take those fees into consideration.

I would think dealers are deluding themselves if they think customers aren't offering less to make up for the fees.

Check out Earl Stewart Toyota in S. Florida. No Dealer Fees Ever!

    That said, he's a one-price dealer so it's a wash or worse.

And no, we don't do OTD prices, just selling prices. We do have a page you can use to estimate your taxes and fees.

Also the S7 comes with free virtual reality goggles so I'll see how those work however they need to be shipped to me before I try them .

You'll have to give us an update on how those work and what they do once they arrive. I'm seeing a lot of TV ads right now showing people using them - they're hyping them big as a Christmas gift item - but they don't give you any idea what they are seeing/doing with them. They look pretty ridiculous. All I can imagine is them becoming another thing that distracts people walking down the street or, god forbid, driving.

I will do that. Not sure how good it will be but I am not to worried about it. I paid $0.00 for it and that works out to $0.00 a year or $0.00 a month or $0.00 a day so I wouldn't be out any if it was a bust.

In Southern Florida you are a captive audience, so to speak, so dealers down there can get away with charging these excessive DOC fees. However, and I don't know this for a fact, but just for talking purposes lets say dealers in Jacksonville, who are not to far from the Georgia line, probably can't get away with the fees like what are charged in Southern Florida because crossing the border to buy a car there wouldn't be a problem. At least not for me and my Sons, who buy out of the state of PA anyway because we want a specific car that can't be found locally and even if we could find that car, the prices are better out of state.

My neighbor did say his bmw was absolutely useless in snow. Now he lives in Colorado but keeps the car here in Florida at his lady friends place. It is a Florida car, he has an AWD 5er and a truck in Colorado.

remind me to never lend you my car.

and I seem to recall in Fla, they have some sort of restrictions about registering from out of state? Fuzzy on this, but I am sure I remember it being mentioned around here sometime in the past.

The dealer with the best rep here is one price. A higher price, but one price.... Not sure about the fees.

@stickguy, it's just garbage, haven't used the can to haul rattlers for a year now (keeping the garage door closed this time of year discourages the snakes from nesting under the utility sink).

What do you think of the Cruze? I'm thinking of checking out the hatchback, but the loaner Cruze I had a year ago seemed very cheap to me.
