I'm going to be doing some serious international traveling in the next several months for work. I have the TSA pre-check, but never got the Global Access check. Filled out the on line paperwork, and now was informed I have to go for an interview (SOP). Couldn't find anything in Cincinnati, so called Homeland Security. I was looking in the wrong place. It's listed in KY, which is where the Cincinnati Airport is (yeah, confusing). Anyway, the Homeland Security Officer informed me that interviews out of KY are scheduled out through NOVEMBER.
Looked at Chicago, where I go fairly often....scheduled an interview next month. How can Chicago be relatively current, when it's 5X the size of Cincinnati?
As for Cincinnati, I learned the hard way about the airport being in KY way back when. I had a conference in Cincinnati to attend, so I took a flight from Chicago's O'Hare to Cincinnati. Even the pilot and flight crew announced "...welcome to Cincinnati!" I had made a reservation for a rental car so I went over to Hertz to pick up the car and sign the paperwork and asked them how to get to the hotel I was staying at. They said, "...oh, that's in Cincinnati - you're in Kentucky so you need to take the bridge to..." I thought to myself - is it possible I landed at the wrong airport? Why would American Airlines land in Kentucky if my conference is in Ohio? So, I began to panic - like I wanted to sue American Airlines, etc. I stopped a cop at the airport and questioned him about this predicament. He said to me, "...relax sir - everyone who travels to Cincinnati the very first time gets all worked up about being in Kentucky. There is no airport in Cincinnati proper - it was built over the Ohio River on the Kentucky side because there was not enough land available to build a big enough airport on the Ohio Side of the river.
I guess land was cheaper in Kentucky. But, for a moment there, I must have turned red, then white, then red again. You learn something new every day, as driver says!!!
Is the snow storm in the northeast as bad as what the news people are saying? A good test for nyccarguy's snow tires!
Not the END OF THE WORLD, as everything seems to be reported now, but I did get to shovel for a soild 90 minutes this morning
Sure looks pretty from the distance - but I acquired an aversion to snow when I lived in Chicago for 23 years. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have that big Toro Snow Blower. I had a concrete drive that had a 20 degree angle up to the garage - very long driveway in fact. The house was built on a hill on the corner. Nice view from the living room window, but an awful view from the street up to the garage. Whoever invented that big snow blower deserves every dime he made. I think I paid over $700 back in the 1980's for that snow blower - quite a bit of money back then - but worth every single penny each winter.
I'm watching Good Morning America and they are doing a story on driving in winter. They stated that "because of technology" you shouldn't steer into a skid any more because it will confuse the electronic nannies. Huh? They say just steer where you want to go and let the electronic controls take over.
Most of my cars don't have stability control but I wonder if I could trust my life to car electronics getting me out of a skid.
I also wonder about going between older and modern vehicles with different technology. Back in 2005 my son got his first car with ABS. He learned to pump the brakes in drivers Ed so when he got into a skid he did so and promptly went into ditch.
In my experience-at least with numerous BMWs as well as one Mazdaspeed-taking corrective action still works. That said, I have had several students who needed multiple attempts before they were able to activate their car's ABS on dry pavement.

Even before the ABS "relearning curve", there was the FWD relearning curve - with FWD, you step on the accelerator in a skid to "pull you out of a skid". So for one generation, you turn in the direction of the skid; for the next generation, you step on the accelerator to pull you out of a kid; for the next generation, you step on the brake; and for this new generation, you do nothing? I guess we can't teach our kids how to drive any more - they need to pay better attention in driver's ed. All we are doing is giving the kids incorrect information based upon current technology - good grief!!!
I increased the rear roll stiffness of my Mazdaspeed 3 by 50%- which allowed me to rotate the car with trailing throttle oversteer. Lots of fun- and not experienced that often in a FWD car.

Maybe that's why I had such an easy time on my last purchase. I threw about a bunch of car terms like "holdback" and "trunk money". They probably figured me for an Edmunds pro.
I have a little story about us knowledgeable car buyers in here. I told this tale back in November of 2011 when we were posting on SFTSFL.
We were buying the 2012 Legacy Limited with 6 cyl. as the replacement for Mrs. j's XG350 that blew up. It's not that long and @driver100 might even remember this tale if he can just hold on for a minute:
I couldn't find the Legacy I wanted here in the Burgh with the 6 cylinder (lots with the 4 cyl.) that was an absolute must for me. So, as usual, Son #1 goes out on the Internet to find what I wanted. After he threw the net out a little further he finds the exact car I want in Columbus Ohio. He calls and wants to know if he should go get a quote, if not, he wasn't going to bother the dealer. The price was pretty good, not great but they did have the car I wanted, so I said OK. About a half hour later I get an email quote and my Son got the same email. My Son calls to make sure I got the email. About a half hour after that I get a personal email that my Son did not get. They called it an Eprice. The price is almost $800 less. This is a Sunday night and I call my Son about it and he goes, "WHOA, WHOA, where did that price come from. That's not the email price I got". I tell him that it is a personal Eprice and he says, "WOW, both of us did a fair amount of research on this car and if that is a real price they are willing to sell at, they have to be into their holdback money. Let me know what happens. This sounds pretty good".
When I got to the office on Monday morning I called the salesman who sent the personal Eprice not the person who sent the blast email.
We talk for a while, mostly me asking questions to be sure they really have the car I wanted because I didn't want to drive to Columbus for nothing and of course we did some small talk. Finally, I said, "I like your price but it is about $300 more than I wanted to spend". Like I said above, the price seemed unreal but, hey, this is the car biz, so why not try to negotiate a little? The salesman said, "Mr. jmonroe, from talking with you, it seems like you have a pretty good understanding of the car biz. So, you have to know we are already into our holdback money on this car. We cannot lower the price anymore".
There you have it. Us guys in here do know more than the average schmo, so we should also know when we have found a good deal.
FWIW, I bought the car the Saturday after Thanksgiving of 2011. The salesman said he could come in on Friday but I told him to spend the day with his family. Maybe buying at the end of the month helped me too. Another thing us guys in here know or at least think we know.
Too bad @driver100, you missed a good repeat story.

This was definitely the real deal. Originally they predicted 6" to 12", but the storm intensified and they changed the forecast. They predicted 10" - 18" & got it right.
School was cancelled as of last night. Knowing there was going to be at least a foot of snow on the ground, I decided not to open our business today. There is always work to be done. Im sure whatever small amount of revenue we would do today would be quickly negated if my Dad or I were to have even a minor accident on the way in or on the way home.
My wife went to work. I sent her in the Pilot. It's less than 3 miles away.
I played outside with my kids for 2 hours before we came in for lunch.
I'll go out later to test out the new snow shoes.

I had exactly the same setup in my Ohio house. On the corner with a steep and curving driveway. From my living room I could watch cars fail to make the stop down at the bottom of the road one way, and fail to make it up the hill the other way. Nice unless I had to go to work. California is good!

Actually, Cincinnati already had the land as there was an airport already in use on the Ohio side. It's still there (called Lunken airport). It was more about the noise. Residents around the proposed airport on the OH side didn't want it because noise would exceed what was already there.
Today, Lunken is a regional airport, with limited service to NYC, Chicago, and a few other cities serviced by regional jets. It's also home to the corporate traffic from Procter and Gamble, GE, Cintas, Federated Dept Stores, etc....all companies HQ'd in Cincinnati, or who have a large footprint here. They fly in and out of Lunken.
Cincinnati International airport (the one in KY) used to be a Delta hub. Through airport mismanagement, and some Delta heavy handedness, they still fly quite a bit out of CVG, but that airport is now 1/3 the size it was 10-15 years ago.
Is the snow storm in the northeast as bad as what the news people are saying? A good test for nyccarguy's snow tires!
I understand it is pretty bad and it is Karma for the Patriots cheating their way to another Super Bowl win. Upon further investigation, it wasn't really cheating. They just caused a pathetic team to choke away a 25 point lead late in the game. Even though the losers choked, I don't think there is another team in the NFL that could have come from behind like the Patriots did. NONE.
It looks like the commissioner is going to have to find another way to legislate against the Patriots. It has been proven that a 4 game suspension for Brady ain't quite enough.
FWIW, here in the Burgh area, I just finished snow blowing a full 5 inches from my driveway. That wax job I gave the snow chute when we had our first snow fall earlier this season is still working.

Hey, pinhead, I really enjoyed your recap of your Subaru buying experience. It was obvious the dealership and your sales associate were honest/up-front with you throughout the entire process - a true rarity in the car business.
I noted that the F&I process was ill-equipped to handle you in a timely manner. I guess they only had one employee that handled F&I at the dealership, but that is not out of the ordinary. At least while you waited, you were able to accomplish quite a bit which made the time fly by more effortlessly.
There remains one process that invariably drives me nuts when I buy a new car (which means I've been driven to lunacy at least once a year for the past 10 or so years) - and that is F&I (Finance and Insurance). The process not only is quite time consuming, but there never seems to be a quick in-and-out of that office. I realize the deal has to be loaded into the F&I software by the sales manager and then the F&I employee has to continue data entry into her F&I system. In most dealerships, the sales data system is not compatible with the F&I data system. Additionally, when forms are printed, they still are required to use dot-matrix printers to make sure everything lines up properly.
If the car sales industry could come up with a more expedited system of getting car buyers in and out of that office in under 15-20 minutes, it sure would make the car buying process less taxing.
I've already extended my best wishes to you for complete enjoyment of your new Subaru, but I am going to repeat those wishes to make sure "it takes" if you know what I mean. Have fun, pinhead!!!
When I bought the Mustang the F&I didn't even mention extended warranties or even mop&glow. They came up with a lower financing rate than my credit union. A nice experience.
I always tell them, when I sit down at the F&I desk, that I don't want anything extra. Usually they thank me so they don't have to do their spiel. Occasionally they think I am trying to steal their kids food.
The thing that still bugs me is when they say you have to sign a paper stating that you didn't want the extras. Silly. As someone in here said once - that's like buying a quart of milk at a grocery store and having to sign a paper saying you don't want a turkey.
I believe that disclaimer started in the insurance industry. People would have some type of loss that could have been covered if they had purchased some type of rider, or extra coverage that was available. The person filing the claim would sue and say he/she did not know this coverage was available and no one explained it to them....thus the signed disclaimer.... and more paper work.
Because they work, more often than not. The people who inhabit these boards are not like the general public.
Maybe that's why I had such an easy time on my last purchase. I threw about a bunch of car terms like "holdback" and "trunk money". They probably figured me for an Edmunds pro.

As for what you THINK I overpaid, I got some trunk money/holdback money. Which is nice stuff to have. On the other hand, you just plopped and gave the guy your wallet. Big difference. You should be happy he only took 200 bucks. But I will give you some credit, you were afraid you'd miss a good story.

Thanks for the history lesson. I had a business trip to CVG just a couple weeks ago. I remember the airport being a whole lot busier in the past than it was this last time.
I was out on the east side of town, and found it strange to have to cross back into KY to go to downtown Cincinnati for dinner.
I understand Southwest will be coming to CVG in the near future.
What a mess this has become. I called Ashley Furniture to cancel my order. They blocked my call!! I used my wife's phone, they answered, when they heard my voice they immediately transferred me to customer service. What?! How would they know?! Customer service says they don't cancel orders, I have to call the finance dspt. An endless loop I've been thrown in.
I call my credit card company to dispute the charge. Someone not fluent in English took the call, says papers to dispute charge will be sent in 7-10 days, don't cancel the order. I say by the time I get the papers the furniture will be delivered. I'll be stuck with the furniture. Can I pretend I'm not home? She says ok, cancel, then dispute the $200. So should I take a bat, or Mrs. Jipster, to Ashley Furniture when I go in tomorrow to cancel the order... if they try to jump me? Jmonroe, you been lifting weights? How bout a hand?
Jipster, any time I've called ANY customer serivce, and haven't gotten satisfaction, I hang-up and call back to get another agent. If I were you, I would definitely cancel the order. Be sure to document every call or trip down there, including the date and time and person you talked to, and what was said. If it goes any further, this will definitely help your side of the issue.
Jipster....I would cancel the order, preferably in writing...even if it means taking the letter to the store and dropping it off to the Store Manager. If they devliver the furniture, refuse delivery. Call the CC company and tell them you canceled the furniture in writing, and refused delivery.

Not the END OF THE WORLD, as everything seems to be reported now, but I did get to shovel for a soild 90 minutes this morning
Bah! A mere dusting compared to the doom and gloom the media are hyping for us here in Nova Scotia later tonight. I was at the supermarket this morning and it was like a hurricane was forecast, huge lineups.
Jipster, when you mentioned furniture, a distant memory came to the forefront of the "Windmills of My Mind!" to coin a song title.
My wife and I had gotten engaged in Chicago back in 1967. Our first joint venture as an engaged couple was to find an apartment. We looked all over and settled on a 4th floor 1-bedroom corner unit in a brand new 4-story apartment building in Osk Park, Illinois - the first suburb west of Chicago. Quite a nice place. Next, we needed furniture.
My parents said they would buy all the furniture we needed to furnish the apartment as their wedding gift. We went downtown on Michigan Avenue to John M. Smythe - at the time a very exclusive furniture place. We walked in and a sales lady greeted us. We explained we were looking for furniture to furnish our new apartment. She was hesitant to work with us because we were recently engaged and she thought we were poor or something and did not see a big sale based on her first impressions of us. So she pawned us on to a new salesman - about our age - telling us that he can help us look. The store had 6 or 7 floors of furniture.
After 3 hours, we saw the first sales lady as we were leaving. I walked over to her, showed her our receipts for over $7500 in furniture (full bedroom suite with king bed, chest, dresser and armoire, full living room set, large dining room table w/6 chairs and large breakfront and a dinette set), and laughed right in her face saying, "...now that would have been a nice commission for you, wouldn't it?"
$7500 was a ton of money at the time, but most of what we bought had to be custom made, solid wood, expensive lamps, etc. We could tell by her demeanor that she wasn't very happy.
We had that furniture for over 20 years - and when we sold it, we got back almost what we paid for it. Of course we thanked my mom and dad. The furniture was delivered 3 months later when we moved into our new place together.
It was so satisfying to see that woman's face. Revenge and retribution- it can be sweet at times!!!
FWIW, we got a Legacy not a Forrester. Do I look like @cdnpinhead? You can't even get the models right.
You and @driver100 need to declare a truce, bury the hatchet, smoke the peace pipe, break some bread.

Carnaught and GG's advice is excellent. I would add, take the note to the store and ask them to sign a copy so they know what you intend to do. Say you changed your mind within __ hours, and you decided to cancel the order, and won't sign for it if they try to deliver it. If they won't sign your note take a selfie in the store trying to get it signed.
Next call their head office and tell them what you have experienced, it is worth a try. This may not be aware what this store has done, and it may be against store policy.
You can smell death in a retail establishment when they have to try to keep every penny they can.
Thanks for the advice guys. A bit of uncharted water for me. Things have escalated quickly. Though my tone was firm and persistent, when I originally tried to cancel the order, I didn't use questionable language and wasn't disrespectful.
Good story Mike. And yeah, I've been doing a bit of fantasizing on a little Jipster style revenge. Store manager drew first blood. This ain't over.

Good for you jip, I can guaranty you won't get anywhere if you get loud or start swearing. Present your case in a logical professional way. Stress all they had to do was cancel the order on paper, nothing was done yet, and what they have done is dishonest. If you lose it...you will definitely lose, if you are reasonable you have a chance, depends on how nasty or desperate this manager is.
One other thing, if they don't give you a refund and only after you are sure you have exhausted every avenue....tell the manager this would make a good lesson for consumers, and you will be following it up with consumer TV/radio/newspapers in the area, as well as reporting it on consumer websites....such as yelp.
SDA, I like your house. That is the style I want next time.
Thank you. We have enjoyed it and hard to believe we bought it almost 13 years ago. It is a ranch style with a bonus room that my daughter uses upstairs. I forgot to close the other garage door so you get a peek of the Accord parked in the garage.

I have thrown a few weights around in my day but what you need is someone with an unavoidable left hook. I say that would be Mrs. j but she don't work for nothin. Her fee will be more than the cancellation charge. So, I doubt you'll go for that. However, I'm retired now but for a poster buddy maybe I can come help you throw a couple of weights around. Just keep in mind, if I miss the salesperson and hit a lamp or something other than what I'm aiming at, you have to pick up the cost for the property damage.
Let me know how you want me to proceed with this.

I guess land was cheaper in Kentucky. But, for a moment there, I must have turned red, then white, then red again. You learn something new every day, as driver says!!!

I think we just lost @driver100.

No, I didn't, but I could have shortened it by 75%!
*We were looking for a 6 cyl Forrester for Mrs JM
*Son #1 finds one in further out than expected in Columbus Ohio
*He says he would check it out if I wanted, the price wasn't special
*I told him to go ahead
*They sent me and my son an email with the price...good, not great!
*Then I got a personal email for me only, and it was $800 less!
*This was Sunday evening, so I call my son and let him know about the special EPrice. He says we spent a lot of time researching it so it sounds like a great deal.
*On Monday I called and spoke to the salesman. I figured I had nothing to lose so I tried for another $300 off, I said it was $300 more than I wanted to spend. He said, "Mr. jmonroe, from talking with you, it seems like you have a pretty good understanding of the car biz. So, you have to know we are already into our holdback money on this car.

I was out on the east side of town, and found it strange to have to cross back into KY to go to downtown Cincinnati for dinner.
I understand Southwest will be coming to CVG in the near future.
