    Hi all,
To make it easier to compare prices, if possible can you tell everyone the APR you got and if you bought any accessories, extended warranties, window etch etc. Obviously if you over pay on one part the car can be sold for below invoice etc.

  • tolley2tolley2 Member Posts: 2
I can do that, I didnt get any extras but the all season floor mats. My apr was 5.29% for 60 months. Picked the car up a couple hours ago, wow is it nice. It seems really tough to keep it under the speed limit. I was talking with the sales guy and asked if he was surprised by the price. He said it was ridiculous and they probably would have tried to quote me something else once I got to the showroom but he honored it anyways. The finance guy did a very soft sell on the warranty, it looks about 300 less through hondawarranty.com so i declined.

Hey, Regarding the ex v6 w/Navi, try Norm Reeves in Cerritos. Specifically, Lee Taylor. Nice man. Remember him giving me a ball park of 25ish. Thats about invoice. He didn't give me specific number. Anyway, as far as all the dealers I have been talking to, He is the one I will buy from. Pleasant and up front.

Many thanks to Johnjr #(1519) and Kudi #(1509) for responding to my post. I was not aware dealerships used loss leaders to attract customers. It would definetly be worthwhile to take a trip to Boston to buy my next Honda which may be soon. Thanks also for the suggestion to watch the Boston area dealer's advertising. I will check into that soon. Now if the dealers would run a special on a Pilot EX, it would be time to visit my relatives in the RI area. By the way, we did buy my sister the 2003 Accord LX AT from a Jackson, MS area dealer, but it was a struggle back and forth with the dealer's GM to get to the $18500. Oh well, she is very happy with the car. Happy Honda driving to all.

In market for 03-Accord-LX-AT (model CM563) in Bay Area.

I have received quotes up to ~$17.6k in writing from 2 different dealers, this is just over phone/email, no in person negotiations yet.

I would love to get it around ~17K. Would be great to hear from any other buyers who have been able to negotiate around this in Bay Area OR suggestions on how to get to this number.

Similar to couple of other postings, I am curious to find out how dealers are able to sell below their dealer cost (=invoice+destination-hold back which equates to 18,003+460-600=17,863 for this model).

Are there any dealer promos in place for this model or are they just making loss on this?

FYI - I found following site useful in getting some #s - http://www.car-prices-costs.com/2003-Honda-Accord.html

I bought a Honda Accord EX yesterday from Autowest Fremont. The price was 19,999 including destination charge. The interest rate of 7% is really too high.

My take on invoice pricing is that it represents the accounting cost between dealer and manufacturer for the car. As such, it does not necessarily reflect the true cost of the automobile to dealer. One example is obviously holdback. Also, if I were a manufacturer, I would give a rebate to dealers based on the sales volume per month/year and for top dealers in a particular area. For example, if the dealer sold 100 cars or were the top area dealer in a given period, they'd get a 5% rebate from the invoice prices of the cars sold.

Another mechanism could be the manufacturer's customer satisfaction survey. Since the dealer I dealt with was pretty concerned about me giving them a good rating when Honda would call, I would not be surprised if there were some financial teeth put behind that survey.

And since the invoice price is so well-publicized, I wouldn't be surprised if manufactures are using these and other mechanisms to keep the true dealer cost hidden from the public. I certainly would if I were in their situation.

Just my completely unsubstantiated two cents...

I wouldn't be surprised if manufactures are using these and other mechanisms to keep the true dealer cost hidden from the public."

'nailed it. the 2002 civic year-end INVOICE sale here in atlanta had the dealer giving away the $750 holdback (that's at least 5%) and another $750 in dealer incentive, totaling $1500.

strong hint at what they get for accords even at invoice, right ?
  • moolmanmoolman Member Posts: 129
I have a feeling that there is a dealer incentive right now for the Accord ever since the unadvertised 3.49% was over. Before that not many people were getting invoice or below but now it's more common. Just a guess.

How much is the fair price about the extended warranty?
  • spleckspleck Member Posts: 114
Considering that many Accords are going for around invoice, what's a good price for a Coupe V6 6MT considering MSRP is $25900, invoice is $23305, and holdback is $777? Ideally I'd be able to get as good a deal as other are on 5MT I4 Coupes, but what are dealers realistically going to let these go at now that everyone has hyped them up? Any other tips for negotiating a good price on one of these? Thanks...
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
i'd recommend letting a month or two pass while monitoring (if you have the time) a particular 6-speed unit's progress at the dealer lot (big dealers shuffle the cars around a lot, so watch out for that).

dealers' practice is to typically sell a "rare," high-demand model variant initially at MSRP, or over, and wait for buyer response. they then reduce their internally acceptable price weekly/bi-weekly as the car remains unsold.

thus, if you see your target car not having been sold by month-end, you know they're ready to negotiate.

best guess is that with buyers flying from other states to get their desired car, and where the manual v6 will be initially in low supply, invoice price may be hard to get for the first few months.

but month-end buying can still get a better price than during any other time of the month, unless the one or 2 units are delivered at month-end too.

    good luck.

Can anyone in the Dallas/Fort Worth area tell me what kind of prices they were able to get for a 2003 Accord EX-V6 auto coupe and at which dealers? I see people getting invoice for their Accords in this forum and am wondering if I will be able to get that here in the DFW area.
  • spleckspleck Member Posts: 114
Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, not only am I itching to buy a new car, but the current one is on its last leg (91 Ford Taurus :). So basically I'm the ideal buyer to be taken advantage of... My wife's car is a 91 Celica, so it still has life.

You may be familiar with Gwinnett Place Honda in Atlanta... they told me they'll be getting 20 6MTs a month, so I may be able to keep an eye on them and see how it goes. I live down in Macon where the dealers are trying to charge $500 to $800 over MSRP for everything (Appearance package or Locality Adjustment). The Macon dealer said they'll be getting a white one, then a black one, so I may be able to watch here too (I want black one).

If I was able to get a 6MT for $24800, would that be a good deal considering the "demand"? Or is this car going to be under $24k in 3 months?
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
the scenario in my last post was actually derived from g.p. honda where i purchased my wife's 03 ex and which i've visited recently to negotiate for a v6 coupe auto (didn't agree on trade allowance).

20 v6 manuals/month is quite a lot, and works to your favor because i think it's matched with demand.

if you're buying without a trade, the nego will be much smoother. with volume-conscious g.p. honda, i'm sure you'll get a fair if not fantastic price.

$24.8k including destination but no sales tax looks quite good based on the edmunds' tmv ($25.3) for gphonda's zip code. it's only $1k or 4.2% over invoice for which is practically a new product. the price 3 months hence ? very speculative, but let me say that with consumer confidence down and honda production geared to optimize capacity, there's a fair chance prices might go down some.

to get your target price of $24.8k, or even lower, maybe an unorthodox way is called for. which is, how about starting an acquaintance with the the sales rep and sales manager (man in glass booth who approves deals) a week or two before actual negotiation.

make friends over the phone, let them know what car you need, etc. and show up month-end to nego and buy.

premise here is that they'll give better terms to someone they already know and like than a first-time acquaintance.

it should feel good to jump into that coupe from the taurus, i imagine. i might be able to help personally - since i might be in buying position for the v6 auto end-jan - so email me at bsromana@yahoo.com for a possible "group-buy."

Which dealer did you buy from in Milwaukee? Who gave you quotes of 600 below invoice?
  • rainbow24rainbow24 Member Posts: 26
I got my PIAA headlight bulbs at a local Tire & Rim shopp, I went to PIAA's website and looked for a location here that sells their product and they looked at the 2002 Accord bulb number from the owner's manual and matched it to a bulb for the 2003 Accord Coupe which I own. It is easy to do, a screwdriver and possibly pliers, use the 03 Accord owners manual and look at how to change a headlight bulb out, very easy, I did a very slow careful bulb changeout and it took me 1 hour total, the improvement in lighting and vision at night are incredible. They are worth the $55 I paid, and will last pretty long.

Now the 6 Speed manual V6 Coupe. This car is a limited production run vehicle by Honda, they are making only 2500 of these rare cars, every dealer in America will get one and only one I'm told. So a dealer getting 30 V6 6 spd Manual Coupes a month is a crock. And lastly, they will bring sticker, they will be collectors items, yes a collectors item on a production run car, they also will be released in March.
  • spleckspleck Member Posts: 114
I've seen the bulletin sent out to Honda dealers. It states that all dealers will AUTOMATICALLY have ONE 6MT coverage unit ordered for them. That is how the rumor of ONLY one got started. This unit will be non-navi. Dealers can also order more based on their previous coupe sales. Furthermore, navi-versions will be produced and shipped later (April or so) and I imagine Honda wants the 6MT to primarily be sold with navi for the higher profit margins.

Don't give in to the hype and make everyone pay over MSRP. Not to mention that the 2004s will be out 6 months after the 2003 6MTs are.

I just bought a 2.4 LX AT for $17588, not including tax and license. I am in the San Francisco Bay area in California. The dealer was trying to unload a few cars that was on his lot for more than 100 days. So we have a very limited choice of color. To chose from other cars he has in stock, we will have to pay the following quote:
    DX $14799
    LX $17997
    EX $20154
    EXL $21322
    LX-V6 $20588
    EXL-V6 $23174
All are AT and "L" is for leather.
The car we bought is not old (only 8 miles on the car). So we don't care how long it had been on the lot. It was more than $1000 below invoice (AT in California cost more because of smock control). The dealer did not quote this price to get me in and try to sell me something else for more. He actually did not want me to chose another car for the higher price. There was no hard sell at all. There is another dealer who said if we wait until February, he may be able to beat that deal by a couple of hunder dollars. But that deal is too good to past up. We will not wait for something that "may" be better.

...at Sunny King Honda in Oxford, AL. The way I have it figured I paid about $180 over invoice.
    This price didn't include tax.

I emailed them, requesting a quote and got one, countered, and then we came to a deal.
Very nice sales staff, at least the guy I dealt with, and no hassles.

wow! Looks like the prices may being going down on the Navi models. Congratulations on your new purchase and pls do keep us updated on the navi.

Went to Hardin Honda in Anaheim, S. CA, couple weeks ago. Spent about 30min negociating and total 15min waiting. Final price is $23,550 + tax + doc + license = $25,7??. Salemen, Gabriel + Mario, were very nice, funny and friendly. Go there and ask for them and they will give you invoice price easily. They give me Free oil change after the other for life. I have 2 friends both got Accord from them and now me. Total about 1hr45min to get the car. They gave 4.9% financing which is high to me and I asked them to give me option. I borrowed my sis $12K and paid off the car. I bought 2 Big Mac for those 2 guys for being nice and they were so hungry at that time (around 8PM).

Comment: very nice dealer and friendly saleman. Less time than when I bought my Accord 2000 at Norm Reeves Honda in Cerritos. Help them out by asking for Gabriel and Mario.

Direction: From LA, take 57 exit Ball and turn left. After the bridge, turn right on the first light and right on the next street. They're at the end of the road.

    Hi All,

Recently I bought the Accord EX V6, and dealer sold me the Care Craft package for $489. They will probably apply some coating on the exterior and interior of the car to protect against Sun, Rain, acid rain etc...

I am just wondering is it worth taking that package for $489... Do we really need extra coating on Accord. A friend of mine told me that its of no use... I am in delima, please gimme expect feedback about the same

    Thanks

    Thanks Mike for the information.

Should I go ahead and return the package?? If I am talking good care of my car, do I need to apply these coating (exterior/interiror), I mean does it good to have these type of coating...

Just received an internet quote for $18,072.00.
This includes destination but not TTL fees. The quote is for $390 below invoice...Can I go lower?
  • savvybuyersavvybuyer Member Posts: 15
Dear 2003corolla, yes you can go lower.

17,588 seem to be magic number in Bay Area for this car. Stevens Creek Honda is widely advertising this via email.

Folks in MA/VA have received it as low as 17,100/17,000 respectively.
  • moolmanmoolman Member Posts: 129
If you already bought the car, hopefully they gave you a guarantee to return the "care package" even though I don't know how you would return a coat of wax. What the car package sounds like is a coat of wax on the exterior and some scothguard and dash protectant in the interior. These are total ripoffs, they should do this for you for free as a service but you can do them yourself with about $20 worth of products from your auto parts store such as Pep Boys, Autozone, Checkers, whatever is regional to you. You do need to wax your car at least 3 times a year if you want the exterior to look nice but there is nothing in this world that a dealer or anybody can apply that will last you the life of the car. Check out the forums at the website www.autopia.org now this forum is for people who are obsessed about keeping their cars detailed anally but for the normal people, Any cleaner wax such as Meguiar's Cleaner wax or Mother's cleaner wax or Zymol cleaner wax, which are all one step waxes applied once every 3 months should be enough to protect the car's paint and keep it looking new forever. For the interior Lexol for the leather and Vinylex for the dash and vinyl parts. Also meguiars and Mother's makes leather and vinyl care products too. All this for under $50. Go to the meguiars website and check it out and go to autopia.org and do a search and read some threads.

Are you seeing prices advertised for Accord sedan LX 5 speeds? Since the suto trans costs about $700 (I think), this means that a 5 speed LX should be available for just under $17K? Are Stevens Creek Honda, Capitol Honda and Anderson Honda in a price war? Thanks.
  • savvybuyersavvybuyer Member Posts: 15
No, haven't seen 5-speed pricing on LX but I agree with you that one should be able to negotiate it around $17k.

Few dealers have confirmed that there are lot of LX in the market so they are forced to offer good $. LX with side air-bag isn't as widely available so even though sticker price difference is $250, selling price difference is more than $700 between the two.

To be honest, I am unimpressed by dealings of Capitol Honda even though they appear to have more cars. Not as professional or straight forward folks to deal with. Anderson is holding the price around $18k, not negotiating much.

Stevens Creek appear to have the best deal, followed by San Leandro Honda in this market. AutoWest folks are professional, not as hungry though. Los Gatos and Larry Hopkins don't appear to be able to compete on price compared to few of the other mentioned.

I am in my final stages of buying, will let team know on final numbers.

I will be in the bay area this weekend, so any update before then would be appreciated. Also, could you tell me your salesperson at Stevens Creek? Again, many thanks.
  • sf_sanjosesf_sanjose Member Posts: 4
    Northwest1,
If you go to Stevens Creek, make sure you do not talk to any salesperson. You need to talk to one of the fleet managers who work for Manuel Souza. I think the person who is in charge of internet sale is Charles. His last name begins with B, but I don't remember what it was. Two other fleet managers there are Vince and David. You may try to call Charles and make an appointment before you go. By the way, if they tell you the low price cars are sold out, don't go for a higher price one. Tell them you will wait and leave. Give them a local number to call you back. Don't let them know you are from out of town if possible until the deal is closed. (After the deal is closed, you would want to let them know you are from out of town to get the lower sale tax.)

I visit SJ several time a year, so I won't get pressured into a bad deal. If it is not meant to happen this weekend, then maybe some other time. I just wish the Honda market in Seattle was as competitive as in the Bay Area or Boston! Thanks for your insights.
  • nobeenobee Member Posts: 194
could you pls inform us how the market is up at the NW? I'm stationed overseas right now and interested in how hot the market is in my hometown of Seattle; especially the EX-L w/ navi. I've checked most NW Honda dealers websites and all the prices are MSRP.

I have dealt with internet sales department at each dealer and ended up buying (EX V6) from Capitol Honda. Whenever I talked to Stevens Creek Honda, I got an impression that his lowest given price seemed firm ($23700 something if my memory serves me). The starting quote in his e-mail was $23975 or something which he lowered in subsequent phone conversation.
On the other hand, the internet manager at Capitol was very persistent in trying to reach me during the holidays. He kept saying he had better price whenever he called. Finally when I came in on the first day of 2003, he agreed on $23600 which includes Day/Night Auto Dimmer installed. Signing process went pretty smooth too with no pressure to purchase any of extra services like extended warranty or paint protector etc. In a nutshell, my experience with Capitol was not bad at all. Steven Creek Honda seems ok too even if they were not as aggressive as Capitol Honda in my book.
  • northwest1northwest1 Member Posts: 65
Was your salesman at Capitol Honda named Sam Samaha? "Ask for me and only me, Sam Samaha...!!!" His automatically generated emails are full of typos and reek of a carnival barker. However, it sounds like the emails and the actual buying experience are like night and day? Let me know if you liked dealing with Sam or not. Thanks for your post.
  • savvybuyersavvybuyer Member Posts: 15
Sam's experience from someone else - I actually met Sam this weekend. My impression were mixed. When I called him before I went in person, he said he would beat any written quote by $100. When I presented the written quote, his thinking changed!

He also went on to bashing few other dealers in the area.

    My 2c.
  • sf_sanjosesf_sanjose Member Posts: 4
I had the same experience as savvybuyer. I told Sam about the quote I got. He knew the dollar amount. He said he can beat it. When I got there, he can't even meet that price.
I wouldn't say it was a really bad experience. I never totally trusted that he can beat the quote I got. I just want to give him a chance. When he can't, we walk. I was not disappointed.

I am in San Francisco area. I am looking at both Accord Lx with side air bag and Ex auto now. I want the model that has auto climate control, not necessary the dual-zone climate control though. Is it true that Ex without leather also has auto climate control? Also what is the good price for Lx with side air bag and Ex auto, and from which dealer? How do you approach the salesman? Many thanks!
  • treostertreoster Member Posts: 74
If you're looking for those models in the SF Bay Area, check with Rich Lynn at Doten Honda In Berkeley.
Call ahead, say you were recommended, and either have a discussion or make an appt to meet. He will be straight about which cars they have, and what deals he can do.
  • leirexleirex Member Posts: 50
His name is Tony Phan. As I mentioned in my previous post, he was nice, patient, persistent and helpful unlike Sam that I do not know. He was not pushing either. Actually, I stopped by several times from right before X-mas to 1/1/03 when I bought mine, shopping around. He did not get fretful but tried to give me a piece of advice over Toyota Avalon XLS and Hyundai XG350 that were on my list, of course in favor of the Accord. When I finally sit down with him for a deal, he agreed on my offer in about 1 or 2 minutes. I could have gone a little lower but am satisfied with his attitude. If you see him, tell him "David Lee" recommended him to you. Again, the deal itself did take about 10 minutes or so. Waiting for sign-up took longer as there were so many buyers on the day. Call his cell phone to make an appointment with him.
  • hondafan63hondafan63 Member Posts: 3
Treoster, thank you very much for your advice, I will check with Lynn.
I just received an internet quote for Accord Ex auto (cloth interior,4 cyl)for $20,554 that is $200 under the invoice price including destination charge but before tax and license according to the quote. Is this a good price? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again!

After doing my homework for about a week and receiving INVALUABLE info from this message board, I finally took the plunge last night and bought 2003 Accord EX AT @ $19,400 from salesperson TJ Singh @ Steven Creek. In spirit of sharing info, below you will find what I gathered during the process. This is a long note but I hope it saves a bit of homework for folks who are in the market today and can help negotiate better deals.

I am a firm believer that if you exactly know model/trim you are looking for - most dealers are offering commodity products and you are in a good position to bargain. I was in that boat so getting a better deal to me was more important than service and as a result my opinion may not factor in service aspect as much.

Following are the lowest bid I got in writing (without getting into any negotiation, bids include destination charge of $460) after polling about 10 dealers in Bay Area between 1/9 - 1/16.

LX AT - $17,588 (Stevens Creek Honda)
LX AT w/ Airbag - $18,322 (Anderson Honda)
EX AT - $19,588 (Stevens Creek Honda)

Please note that some of these #s were offered on certain color/units only. I got the unit/color I was looking for so it wasn't a problem. For example, Graphite in EX seem to be in demand I was asked to pay more $ for that.

Once you are serious, I believe each of these deals have few more hundred $ room (e.g. I got my EX @ $19,400). After visiting the dealership (and walking out once), I did rest of my negotiation via phone. Once we agreed on price, I had the salesperson fax me a quote in writing before I went down to do paperwork.

Since there are lot of base LX AT and EX AT models in the market (not sure about leather / NAV / V6 or others) so one piece of advise - don't let dealer start the pricing at X% below MSRP or y% above invoice. Question to ask is how much below DEALER COST (=Invoice - holdback) are you willing to give. There were FEW who were able to offer me base LX & EX AT vehicle (but not LX with Side Airbag) around dealer cost (+/- 1%) . My deal was won by dealer offering most discount below dealer cost. Dealer cost info @ http://www.car-prices-costs.com/2003-Honda-Accord.html

Re post # 1566 - no EX w/o leather does not have climate control. Reg. LX with Side Airbag, there are not that many on the market and hence you will find $700+ difference between this and LX AT even though sticker price difference is only $250. I was initially considering LX with Side Airbag but after seeing price difference and additional items offered in base EX AT (Moonroof, 6 CD changer, 16" wheels instead of 15", slightly better brakes and interiors, lumber support, security system), I went for EX. I guess this was successful tactic on Honda/dealer part to up sell me to next model by offering the right value.

Re. post # 1557 - I actually got a better deal from sales person compared to their Internet dept. Internet group @ Stevens Creek was offering vehicle @ 19,588 (and would not budge even after several conversations). Salesperson's name is TJ Singh, you can tell him that "savvybuyer" referred you to him so he knows that you have all right info to negotiate. Really nice guy, I would highly recommend him.

I have built a spreadsheet with all dealer contact / offers and relative price comparison and lease scenarios. If interested, please drop me a note at savvybuyer@vimals.net and I can send it to you in few days (as I need to clean it up).

Lastly, based on postings from other region, it looks like Boston area dealers are offering even more aggressive pricing on than I found. This may partly be higher business costs in Bay Area compared to other areas? In other words, Boston etc. may find numbers even better than what I have found.

Thanks & really appreciate your invaluable info! I just got a phone call from Charles-internet sales with Stevens Creek Honda, giving a quote for Accord Ex AT @19,488. He said that he only had two silver left & he could not put hold on the vehicles if other customers asked for it. So he made a appointment with me this Sunday, but said the special priced cars would be gone by then. Should I rush to buy or wait? Should I ask for TJ Singh?
  • savvybuyersavvybuyer Member Posts: 15
Looks like "officially" advertised priced dropped to 19,488 (from 19,588 last week), good for us!

Since I got better deal through TJ, it wouldn't hurt to give him a call (408.205.2602) to check out if he can offer better number. I don’t know the big picture on how different individuals operate within the group but at least at few dealerships I have seen regular sales and Internet groups enjoying healthy competition - this is always good for buyers as they both will try to win you over.

I also spoke to their Internet dept. a bit more about these specials. Apparently, Stevens Creek Honda's owner Sonic Automotive (NYSE:SAH web site http://www.sonicautomotive.com/) has corporate policy to offer better deals on vehicles 100+ days old (as they carry loans on them and have incentive to move the vehicles off the lot). These are not demo vehicles, they have 6-10 miles (similar to "fresher" vehicles). Vehicle I purchased is similar to this and I made my decision knowingly and checked it out to my satisfaction prior to purchase. If anyone else has more info regarding potential concerns with buying 100+ day old vehicle - please chime in to educate all of us. I imagine other dealerships under Sonic have similar policies - you can find the dealerships they own on their web site.

If you like the vehicle, I'd suggest you grab it. I have asked 7 other dealers (including Capitol Honda) to match Stevens Creek price on EX in the area and no one has been willing to do so.

One thing I suggest in dealing with anyone is to verify model/trim/color availability and get VIN number of the vehicle for the specific price they quote to make sure that they have are not just "inviting" you to store to really sell you something else OR that the special vehicles haven't been sold already.

I've made my deal for an LX-6 sedan. I'm trying to avoid dark colors and wanted white, with silver as a second choice and the tan/gold [?] metallic as a 3rd choice.
I'm told it is extremely difficult to get an LX-6 sedan in a light color. This seems odd since I thought that the LX was a bigger seller than the EX and thus there'd be more production units I'm in the Wash DC area. Comments/experience from anyone?
