You say, "Number 1 rule of finance - Never borrow money on a depreciating asset."

Well, that may not be true. It depends on the true rate of money supply inflation, which affects prices of assets.

If the dollar is losing value at a fast enough rate, you can pay back your car loan with future dollars that are worth much less than what dollars were worth at the time of purchase. In that case, you may come out ahead by buying your car on credit, particularly if you convert your unspent dollars to something which is not losing value.

If the value loss of dollars was very fast, you might even find that the price of your used car increases as time goes on, even though its real value is depreciating. A rising price on a used car does not mean the car is becoming more valuable (appreciating), it just means the dollar is quickly becoming worth less (worthless).

The real #1 rule of finance is never save your money in a form which is losing value faster than your paycheck is increasing.

Thanks to you all for your valuable advices. Now can I ask you guys a question? What you guys think would be a good price to get the car? If you can tell me that would be a good suugestion for me to offer it to my dealers. If you can please let me know what should I pay for the car before the rebates and excluding the TT&L. I would look fwd for your suggestion. Thanks a lot in advance for your time and help.

Unless you want to waste a lot of your time and aggravation don't offer anything.

Don't even go to a dealer until you are ready to buy having received a best quote on the exact vehicle (color, options) from all the dealers in the area.

Use the fax or internet to contact the internet salses manager. Some won't quote but who cares. You should get 40-50% response.

Read this and other forums for help.

I am ready to buy the car now...

The quote my dealer gave me is $17,995 and they will give me $500 and $400 rebates so it will be around $17,195

I have given this more thought. Go ahead and purchase your GL, no need to review all 2000 posts, or even take the drive to Miami to save an additional 10-15%. You'll love the Car!. Just keep in mind that some of us driving the GLS V6 or LX with most or all options paid about the same as your GL :)

Hi folks. Enjoy reading your posts. Much more informative than a lot of other stuff on the web. I'm in the market for a new Sonata. Normally would go for the LX, but they dont' offer it in a manual, so am stuck with the lowest end GL. I hear rumors that the 2007 GL and I4 GLS will have upgrades in standard features. Does anyone have information on what these would be?? Specifically, does anyone know if, for example, the sonata will have folding side mirrors, any more power, etc? Thanks
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
58 miles? In other words, it was a demo.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You are right, that is one thing that is hard to believe but true, the rebates on the V6s are much higher now than the I4s plus there is more markup on the V6s, so it is possible to get a V6 for about the same money as an I4. If you (new_car) don't mind the lower fuel economy, it would be definitely worth checking out before jumping for the GL. The GLS (I4 or V6) does add some useful features such as alloys, trip computer, fog lamps, and nicer interior trim.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
You are aware with the SHIFTRONIC, you can drive the 5 speed A/T in the 4 speed manual mode. I've tried it, works great, however very distracting.

Backy please, if someone said they bought a Brand new Sonata with 58 miles on it, why doubt them?. My Brand new LX came with an amazing 110 miles on it. Was I thrilled about that fact, no. However the price, absolutely unbeatable, and the drive is thrilling!
  • readonlyreadonly Member Posts: 25
This car was driven from another Hyundai dear in the Houston Suburb to meet my wife's color requirement since my wife only wanted the Sonata in White color (there is none available in the lot for GLS I4 in the lot).
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I don't doubt at all that the car has 58 miles on it and was never titled and thus is a "new" car. But with 58 miles, it was used as a demo. No biggie. The last new car I bought had about 60 miles on it--it had been used as an auto show car by HMA. Due to that fact I got the dealer to toss a $499 3-year maintenance package into the deal for free.

Hello All. I am in the market for a 2006 Sonata GLS V6 with sport package. I live in KY and would be interested if anyone has any comments for purchases in this region.

At this point, the best price (before rebates, tax, title) I have received from a dealer is $19,995. I've seen other postings from other parts of the country that appear to indicate a better deal is possible. Any thoughts/guidance to the KY region?

Also, is there any info available on the updates for the 2007 Sonata? Are there changes worth waiting for instead of buying the 2006 model?

    I appreciate any information.

We are in NJ and just purchased a 2006 Sonata GLS V6. We paid 16,290 AFTER 2500 in rebates plus tax, registration and tire fees. It would have been about 1000 more to get the 4 cylinder because of the lower rebate. Only have had it since friday but it drives very smooth and so far we are happy with it.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Where in any of his posts did he say he bought a demo?. Sounds more like a Dealer trade. Besides, all cars on the Lot & in the Showroom are for demonstration purposes. My LX came new with 120 miles. Can you share any psychic thoughts on how it was treated prior to my purchase?.;)
  • tc147tc147 Member Posts: 2
Thanks rosie726. Just curious, did you car include the sport package (sunroof, 17" wheels, etc.) for that price? Have you heard of any indication of the incentives to be offered by Hyundai in May?
  • readonlyreadonly Member Posts: 25
No, I am pretty sure it was not used as demo. The milage was caused from driving between the two dealers (around
50 miles). My wife could get many choices in the lot, but no Whitle available at that time.
  • phill1phill1 Member Posts: 319
I can`t believe all these posts on whether or not a (NEW) Sonata delivered with "50" miles on the odometer classifies the vehicle as a demo, loaner, service or parts runner, or any other description. I purchased a 06 Sonata in Clearwater FL mid Mar. and because I wanted a GLS I4 with Sunroof in Bright Silver, the closest dealer willing to make the swap was a dealership in Orlando almost 120 miles away. The car had almost 150 miles on the odometer when I took delivery.....driven right off the showroom floor. I live in SO East FL 30 miles north of FT Laud. When I got my "new" car home finally in my driveway it had almost 425 miles on it! Thank goodness the new car smell had`nt quite dissappeared yet! Oh, almost forgot to mention, I purchased the car mid. Mar.06 and guess what? I found out afterwards the car was manufactured on NOV 30,05 Guess I got a crustly ole stale leftover too. Still very happy with not only the deal plus all the rebates but the car as well. Happy with my New-Used Sonata.....lol

Can you share any psychic thoughts on how it was treated prior to my purchase?

Wait, let me put my Karnak hat on first... I have no idea how your car was treated prior to your purchase. Which is why I like to buy cars with as few miles on them as possible--who knows how they were treated? I was livid when I found out that my '04 Elantra had been an auto show car for HMA for a few months, and the sales rep and sales manager had neglected to tell me that little fact. Well, I got some compensation for that in the end. All I am saying is, if a car has any miles on it, there should be some kind of compensation. If you got a fantastic deal, maybe part of that is because of the miles on the car and that's good compensation.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
But, if the car was driven roughly 50 miles from one dealership to the selling dealership there were virtually no miles on it other than from one dealer to the next.

My car came in to the FL dealership on a Monday while I was on the phone (in CT) with the salesman, literally still on the truck. I picked it up the following Wednesday and the odo showed 8 miles...6.8 mi on the trip odo.

I don't think the electronic odometers can legally be set "below zero" as manufacturers used to do years ago with mechanical odometers.

A few miles may even be a part of dealer prep (which wouldn't have shown on the odo 15 or 20 yrs ago). Any way, with Hyundai's warranty for "new" cars, a few miles shouldn't be a concern.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If the car was driven moderately for 50 miles, that's mo problem. That wasn't made clear before. That 50 miles could have been from several test drives. Did you happen to read the article in a recent C/D about test drives and what some people do during them? Let's just say the driving behavior mentioned in the article doesn't fall within the break-in guidelines for new cars.

So this is not some sky-is-falling issue, but given the choice between a car with 2 miles or 50 miles, for the same price, I'll take the one with 2 miles.

Took delivery of a Blue 06 Sonata LX on Tuesday this week.
NY is offering a $500 auto show rebate + $2k Mfg rebate.

    The Deal: OTD $19,929

    Negotiated price: $17,995
    Taxes: $ 1,716.50
    DMV/Fees: $ 217.50
    $19,929

No option Package or other add ons.

The car does good for my family of four. Hope the car can hold up to NY stop and go. Really like the shiftronic Tran. I was fortunate, car only had 8mi on ODO :shades:

I'm happy with car choice and deal, family loves it.

Thanks for the input for my prior post. I'm curious if anyone knows what changes are in store for the 2007 Sonata?
  • 94hawkskin94hawkskin Member Posts: 116
My car had 5 miles on it when I first test drove it. I took it on two separate test drives and when I bought it, it had 22 miles on it. I don't know how you could take a car for a thourough test drive with only two miles on the car.
  • wheeldealwheeldeal Member Posts: 6
After searching a few days and doing homework, I see you got a great OTD price for your LX. Congrats! Are the NY DMV fees only for 1 year or 4 years? Any doc fee from the dealer. Which dealer you got that from? I thought I have a good deal at $21K (NJ).

I am also very interested in whats new for the upcoming 07 Sonata. The waits around the corner. I have been hearing may or june for the release of the 07 Sonata. I wouldn't expect any major changes to the car since it is an all new style, however would expect the some minor cosmetic changes such as: front seat correction, XM radio, extra radio controls on steering wheel, and possibly minor dash configuration and lighting. Although the 06 Sonata's have some really good rebates right now through May 1.
  • wheeldealwheeldeal Member Posts: 6
I put down a deposit and signed a retail order (not sales contract)and have been waiting for my color and trim package to arrive since last saturday. Do I have right to cancel ?
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Where did you hear about these changes Dan?. Front seat correction?. XM, why not Sirius?. I know that everyone is livid with the controls on the wheel. I vote for mounting the actual Radio in the steering wheel. And my dash is configured all wrong, along with terrible lighting, what were they thinking?
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
How much of a deposit did you put down?. Sure you have a right to cancel, however you do not have a right to get your deposit back. When you do this type of purchase, you have limited bargaining rights, if any?. Please post your details if you follow through with your Deal!

I just noticed that edmunds has an 06 GLS with 100 miles tradein value at 17,500. Considering you can buy the car for about 2 grand less, this seems interesting. Car max is selling one for 19K, which is about 700 less than edmunds dealer retail.

I know this seems ludicrous to think you could make money by buying new and selling used, but its not. I've worked at dealerships and their not on top of everything. It wouldn't surprise me if a Honda dealer had no idea you could by a new one so cheap. Plus they could probably sell it anyways. A lot of car buyers look at only used, and never realize they can buy new for less money. If I lived in a zero tax state, I'd probably buy one and try selling it in the open market. My money says if you buy a GLS V6 for under 16K, you'd make money on it.
  • craigmricraigmri Member Posts: 243
You can get a GLS V6 for under $16k?????

Carsdirect has them at invoice less the $2000 rebate equaling $18,331 with no options selected.
  • gearhdgearhd Member Posts: 2
    Thanks wheeldeal!

The DMV fees covered two years and the dealer (Hyundai of Manhattan) charged no Doc Fee. There was a $50 DMV processing fee which in my estimation is similar to the doc fee. As a new driver, they processed all of my DMV paperwork at the dealership. I think they have a separate unit that does this exclusively.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
XM because Hyundai has already signed and announced a deal with XM to put XM in all their cars by 2007. They have announced that XM will be in the Sonata by the end of 2006, also the '07 Elantra and I think the Santa Fe and Azera also.
  • dan42dan42 Member Posts: 32
As "backy" has mentioned, Hyundai has a deal with XM, have not heard anything about Sirius yet. As far as the seat correction, this is a well known issue which has been mentioned in many popular car magazines as well as edmunds. I think it would be wise on Hyundai's part to correct this problem for the 07 model. This is pure speculation though.
  • rosie726rosie726 Member Posts: 40
No it did not have the sports package and I know nothing of May incentives. Sorry!! But so far we do love the car! Good luck
  • rishipriship Member Posts: 65
Carsdirect appears to be a ripoff on this particular model. One local Houston dealer has 21 Sonata GLS advertised at 15,888 before ownerloyalty/military discount. That includes destination. Another dealer has $5500 off all GLS V6. These prices don't seem out of line with what people are posting on this board.
  • paradimeparadime Member Posts: 5
Have just bought a 6-cyl GL in Toronto for 26,000 CAD (before taxes). Not wanting to haggle (unpleasant experience with my current Camry) I got the CarCost Canada report and used the Buyer's Offer Spreadsheet (Jeff Ostroff's) at CarBuyingTips.com. Applied a 2% holdback and 3% dealer's profit to come up with the 26K. Couldn't find any info on other factory to dealer incentives in Canada, otherwise could probably have got a lower number. Anyway, they accepted it without argument (at 0% financing for 5 years).

CarCost's report is useful as far as it goes (lists invoice price and customer incentives) but nothing on dealer incentives. 5 reports for the price is pretty OK. Didn't appreciate their allowing their selected dealer to sneak in a "security package" for $399; it sounded like an offer but the dealer tried to include it as part of the cost. However, they backed off when I disagreed.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Actually I seem to have no problems with the seat, I have the electric one, and it stays on track. It is not the best seat, but it sure works well!. I do stick to it though, darn Leather :shades: .

I also had no problems with my Door handles & Cup holder, however those were part of my 3 recalls. The Sonata seems like the perfect Car, get one today! :)
  • philliplcphilliplc Member Posts: 136
advertised in oregon, 30 months @$178 with only rebates down, zero due at drive off (cap cost $14998). heck of a deal if accurate.
  • leadfoot8leadfoot8 Member Posts: 1
Just bought a GLS V6 (Cloth seats, no sun roof, standard options for the GLS) for 18,000 exactly OTD without military or loyalty discounts. I dont qualify. Only the Factory 2K rebates. Could have probably got it for a little less, but 18 otd seemed like a good price. What do you guys think?

BTW, I didn't want all the LX features like sun roof, leather seats, etc.
  • novrainnovrain Member Posts: 10
I saw this on tonday's New York Times: $2000 rebate + $1000 bonus (finance thru HMFC). what's a fair OTD price for GLS V6 base model? thanks in advance
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
we take reports of what others have paid, and then compare notes. Pretty sure that ad is misleading, as you can't combine both rebates, or can you?. Today's ad in the Miami Herald for the "Hyundai Challenge" offers 2.9% APR plus $1000 Hyundai bonus cash, or a special lease of $199 a Month, for 30 Months with $2,798 due at lease signing, or up to $2500 cash back on the V6 with owner loyalty. Have you read all 1997 posts here?. Check out # 1975 first!
  • wheeldealwheeldeal Member Posts: 6
I closed the deal Friday. For a OTD of just under $21K, I drove home a located Sonata LX base package (no sunroof) with 100 miles on the ODO.

Next stop : after-market front grille shopping :-)
  • wheeldealwheeldeal Member Posts: 6
That is a great OTD price. They must have given you multiple "valued owner" rebates. Did you finance most of it? If so, what car loan rate and loan term?
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
"I closed the deal Friday. For a OTD of just under $21K, I drove home a located Sonata LX base package (no sunroof) with 100 miles on the ODO".

Not good, even though you bought a great car. Putting a deposit down, and signing a sales order in advance, especially when you are committed to only one Color and Trim, eliminated any chance for that good deal :confuse:

I paid $2500 less, and have all available options. If I decide to sell when Oil reaches $120 a barrel, the resale value of my LX + will possibly fetch an additional $2000. :)
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
We have similar deals here in San Antonio on the GLS six cylinder with automatic but as I discovered that the actual price was $17,500.00 unless you finance through Hyundai and also qualify for the current Hyundai owner rebate neither of which was listed in the ad. Ironic that the six cylinder is cheaper than the four cylinder GLS.
