Well, just purchased my new camry last night. Dealer claimed to give us $500 over invoice but I don't think their invoice was correct. Paid $26,950 OTD (this includes everything, including tax since I am military). I'm sure it's not the best deal but I feel pretty good about it.

What a car. I recently drove a 2006 G35 coupe, 2006 Hyundai Azera, 2003 Maxima GLE, and 2004 Acura TL. I know what you are saying, this is certainly no G35, that's right, but for an everyday car I don't think you can beat it; and it was $9,000 less than the G35, $2,000 less than the Azera, and $1,000 less than the TL (w/40,000 miles).

I am not joking here, but after listening to the other Factory stereos I think this one is the best. The TL does sound nice with a 5.1 DVD but otherwise it lacks fullness. The JBL system is top-notch in my humble opinion (440 WATTS!!, need I say more).

I am very pleased with the Camry, I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. Of all the cars I looked at it had the most WOW effect at first glance; the body has a hint of Lexus IS 250 and the interior could easily be mistaken for a ES 330.

Great forum, wish I had read before last night and perhaps could have gotten a few more dollars off.

Follow-up to my previous post (above). Found out that the dealership had completely deceived me about the invoice price by about $1300. Couldn't believe it (guess I should have), the salesman and I were talking about integrity and she claimed to be honorable and forthright.

So here's what I did: I went back the next morning, in my military uniform, and sat down with the salesman and the general manager. I told them that in a time of war especially, integrity is all that counts and that I didn't appreciate them deceiving me into believing I was getting the car for $500 over invoice [it's important to note that I had already purchased the car and taken possession, they didn't have to do anything]. I discussed my evidence of the actual invoice price: Edmunds, KBB, and I even got the actual invoice price from their own internet salesman over the phone.

It was obvious that I was completely disgusted with their shady practices and I was secretly prepared to walk up to everyone of their customers in my uniform (it was a Saturday so very busy) and discuss what had happened.

After a group of about 6 managers/salesman discussed my situation for about 10 minutes, the manager came out and gave me a different figure for the invoice, this time he was only $700 off from the actual invoice, showed me some website (probably bogus) that showed this number. After a few quid-pro-quos he said he would knock off another $1,000 from the price I paid (dont forget that I had already taken possession of the car). I said OK.

OTD price for a 2007 Camry XLE V6 (no additional options, comes with just about everything anyway) for $25,950
which includes TTL (I'm military so no tax).

Don't want to give the dealership's name but it was one of only two in the Charleston, SC area.

Just wanted to share my experience, thanks for listening.

    link title

Check out the above link, if you add on "Additional Freight Charges, Southeast Toyota" the MSRP is $28,155 for my Camry. Let me know what this "Package A" includes and I will tell you if it is on my car. I will help you in anyway I can.

The dealership is in Charleston, SC, but please see my follow-up post for more interesting details. ;)

    1) Isn't 9% tax rate real? Can dealers lie about tax rates too? (I don't really trust them)

    2) I've read on other posts about something called TTL. What's TTL? Does it look like my quote includes that already?

    3) Is this a good quote overall?

    4) What charges can I expect them to put on top of these when I actually go there to buy my car? Yes, they say it is OTD price, but does anything look missing?

    5) I spoke a couple of other dealers, they talk about some DMV charges. Are those the same as documentation charges?

Chi & Cook Co Tax rates are higher than most of the rest of the state e.g. Dupage is 6.75, so 9% doesn't surprise me, but you will wind up paying tax rate based on where the car gets purchased & registered to so I don't think you can avoid it. You can confirm tax rates at the state of IL web site.

If that's OTD, you shouldn't expect them to add anything else. Sometimes mysterious advertising fees come up, but those might already be included in the base price.

TTL=Tax, Title, License. Title and License is probably (you should verify) included in your new plate charge. State of IL charges $65 for a new title plus $15 to transfer plates or $78 for new plates. I've seen some dealers tack on extra dollars on plate fee but $143 would be right.

DMV (department of motor vehicles) charges would be the plates/title/license. The $57 documentation fee is a maximum capped by the state of IL. They are just charging you money for the paperwork they are doing. Personally I think that's more of a cost of doing business but I suppose it's something not to go stand in line at the Sec of State office. I usually try to get that fee removed or preferably reduce the negotiated base amount to offset.

Thanks for the information. Although it is not the same dealership as I had heard about in 04 (I still haven't found that name and price), it is an excellent price and I will certainly check it out.

    Thanks again,

I just paid $699 + tax for 6 year/100K miles/0 decuctible on my 07 Camry LE. I checked with Toyota GreenField and they are charging $100 more than I paid here. I paid the same amount last year for my wife's 05 HL LTD so the model and trim does not matter as long as it is a brand new Toyota :) .

One more comment, my auto issurance is $100 more than my wife 05 HL LTD , which is still worth as lot more than my brand new 07 Camry LE. I think Camry is on the top of the most stolen vehicles really takes a toll here.

I just bought a 2007 camry LE Auto (Northern CA) - for $19250 + TTL - total was $21100 approx.

I need advice - I also bought the 55000 miles prepaid maintenance plan for $1295 - was that a ripoff - can I cancel it ? this covers the 15K,30K,45K services as well as all oil changes (every 5000 miles)

    Please advise !!

Hello, can you please share where you purchased the vehilce. I assume it included the floor mats, right? This is the same vehicle I am looking at. I also live in N. California.

I can not commenton the pre-paid maintenance plan. Its something I would not purchase. This doesn't mean its good or bad.

I don't think this forum allows use of specific dealer names - I got this price off a dealer in Gilroy - I am sure that gives you your answer !!

Great. I'm about to purchase a Toyota from one of the two Toyota dealerships in Charleston, SC. Can you at least tell me whether or not this dealership was West of the Ashley River? (I have a theory, since one has a reputation for being much sleazier than the other, but I could be surprised).

Just bought a 2006 XLE and love the car. However, I find the seat buckle apparatus on the driver's side to be incredibly uncomfortable. I'm been driving for forty years and have never had a problem with any other seatbelt. I've only driven 200 miles but actually dread driving because of the buckle. Has anyone else had a problem with this and, if so, what did you do? My dealership says "nothing can be done."

I bought my car from Gene Reed. Horrible expereince all around. Please see my post (a LTjg's tale).

After talking to West Ashley on the phone they seem pretty reasonable compared to Reed, but who really knows.

Hope this helps, let me know what you decide, perhaps I can hlep you on getting the best price since I am now an expert after the fact.

I'm curious to know which one you thought was sleazy, perhaps they both are.
  • tinatinatinatina Member Posts: 388
Thanks for the information - you must be referring to Gilroy Toyota (do I win a prize?) That dealership is too far down for me though. You got a good price on the LE -4. There were quotes in N. California @ 19.9k, and 19.7k, but not what you got. Did this include destination or any other charge?

I got a quote of 19.1k plus TTL on a CE (no mats or keyless entry or power seats).

I have been pricing a 2007 SE with the 4. There are not many in the area and all are equipped with the JBL upgrade and the moonroof. List $24,709. One dealer said he may be able to get $600 off that price, another was going to sell it for $23,377. I finally tried the Costco plan and the price quoted is $22,977. For you Costco members it may be worth looking into when it comes time to pull the trigger.
  • swiftlivesswiftlives Member Posts: 8
West Ashley has always had the rep for being the sleazy Toyota dealership in town. I was actually planning on purchasing from Gene Reed. Thanks for the heads up, though. I'll be even more cynical when I go.

I suppose it could be that both of them are skeezy.

Sorry you had to go through that. But congrats on your new car.

Hi All: Does anyone know how holdback works in the SE states regarding holdback and how the distributor between factory and dealers works? I am trying to calculate true cost of invoice and this issue is not clear to me and it is specific to Toyotas and not Hondas where I am experienced at buying new cars. Thanks.

I checked out TMV on Edmunds put in my zip code for Louisiana and added the extras that the Camry includes it says Invoice price total with options is $20,295, MSRP is $22,829, and the TMV is $22,269. So does this mean if negotiating I should start flat with $20,000; $300 below invoice? and max out at $22,269?

Thanks for all the help in advance.

I've been thinking about getting a new (2006) Camry, and have a question on what some people think would be reasonable... There is a dealer that my family has dealt with several times in NY, and the sales person has been great (with 3 previous purchases). The question I have at this point is that they have a 2006 Camry LE with curtain airbags, and sunroof options (about $2k extra). It is being driven by a manager there right now, and has about 4500 or so miles on it. They are trying to sell it as a "new" car, and are at about invoice $20,000 or (just under).

My sales person says that he doesn't even like the price and would be getting back to me. I told him to remind the manager that 07's are out and the car I'm interested in has some miles on it already... Regardless of any rebate on the car ($1500 I think currently in NY), I'm wondering what the opinion is out there of what a fair price should be since it is "used" with 4500 miles on it. I'm thinking that they should be coming down a bit, maybe another $1000-1500 or so since the car is already depreciated in value due to having miles on it. Also, what about the "destination" charge, should I be able to negotiate that off as well since the car isn't new? You don't see that on on used cars.

Obviously, I'm trying to get the best price I can but won't pay invoice for a car with 4500 miles on it. I could see if it was an '06 leftover, but I would think that they would want to move this car sometime soon... I would probably pay closer to the invoice price if they changed out the wheels and put alloys on it, but we haven't discussed that yet. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Most domestic cars depreciate faster than Hondas and Toyotas. 18 - 20% depreciation the first year is about the norm in wholesale car business realms, so a Toyota might be 15% depreciation the first year. Since the 2007's are on the street, it is a 1 year old demo, period. A fair offer is sticker price - 18% - $.18 per mile with proof of an oil change. Your offer: Sticker x .82 - (.18 x 4500 miles). If they say no, let them sell it to some uniformed buyer, but who knows how long it will take for that person to show up at the dealership. In about 1 year from now you will have a 2 year old car if you bought this one, just ask anyone who has a 2005 Toyota Camry who is trying to trade it right now for a 2007 Camry.

    Subject: Re: Sam's Club-Camry

XXX, the Toyota dealership in Decatur, IL, has located a car for me with the desired features, but it is an XLE which is a reasonable substitute. Here is the config and price that he has given me. Can you match or beat this price and configuration?
    HD: heated seats
    NV: navigation
    SK: smart key entry
VS: vehicle stability control with traction control
    CF: carpeted floormats
    RF: rear spoiler

    MSRP: $31,298
Your Price: $29,392 plus tax, title, and lic.

    So... almost $2k off MSRP
Is this a good deal? I had my local dealer match plus the promise of a loaner car for the day when I bring the car in for Service. :D

Thanks for the info. Hopefully the dealer will realize this as well when they give me another price, or when I counter-offer to them.

I posted this earlier in another thread...

I went out and test drove the new SE 4-cyl. this week and was quite impressed.
Overall I loved the new look and enjoyed how it rode, plus it's got some nice new features.

I compared the Subaru Legacy 2.5i, Honda Accord EX-L and the new Camry SE. Each I like for different reasons, but in the end I got the best deal on the Camry. I ended up getting a quote on an SE in Magnetic Gray w/ Charcoal cloth (included spoiler, JBL speakers, mats, alloy wheels and moonroof) for only $300 above invoice - which was around $2,680 off the MSRP. How does this compare with others prices? Did I get a middle of the road deal or come out ahead?

I was pleased with the dealer I got the quote from - no nonsense. I asked for their lowest price and they delivered it without an hassle. However, now that I am asking if they can add on another option or two they are balking at the sale??? I'm unsure of why I am getting so many different answers from different dealers....

Any comments on what others are getting as far as MPG with their new SE?

Just bought a blue 07 Camy LE, 4cyl for $23,275 with these items on the sticker:
    base price: 20,500
    JBL Sat/Bluetooth radio: 1000
    Alloy Wheels: 410.00
    Moonroof package: 940
    Vehicle stability: 650
    Carpet/trunk mat set: 199
I paid about $750 under sticker (MSRP)
I purchased at Carmax in Laurel, MD. They actually sell new Toyotas there with no haggeling and great fair trade-in prices.
  • jtigerjtiger Member Posts: 3
Does your price of $19250 include any options? Please list them if it includes options. Thanks!
You can calculate how much it costs for the 11 oil changes and the 15K, 30K, and 45K services. The maintenace plan should be much cheaper than the cost as you are prepaid for it.
  • calipso27calipso27 Member Posts: 15

CARMAX does provide good prices on trade-ins but their new car prices are terrible On an LE, they should have done much better than 750 off MSRP. Most dealers like Beltway Toyota or Miller Toyota are offering about 2K off MSRP. CARMAX makes you pay for the no haggle luxury big time!
  • tuffytuffy Member Posts: 63
YES, this was a major rip off! You bought a Toyota Camry man, not a lexus or mercedes. All you will need done in the first 55,000 is about 14 oil changes, figure $25 a piece ($350 total) and four tire rotations at $20 a piece ($80 total). So you spent $1295 up front money in todays dollars for about $400 in services that with coupons you could get even cheaper than that. Forget those dealer 15k, 30k, and 45K maintenance packages. There are not necessary, never were and aren't now. Change your oil ever 3000 miles, rotate your tires every 7,500 to 10,000 and forget the rest. Are you sure the maitenance package wasn't $295? Get a refund as fast as possible as you got ripped off big time! Remember, you bought Camry!

    Hi
I live in Norristown Pa. twenty minutes from Philly.I would like to know how people who live near me have been doing on there prices for a 2007 camry SE. I have been emailing offers starting at invoice, and I either get a reply that they can't sell at that price or I don't get any replys at all.The best offer was 1,000 over invoice.
Looks like I'll have to wait a couple of months until they start to budge.
    Thanks

I think so too. I've been by my local dealers 4-5 times now and I've yet to see a single SE, XLE or any V6 of any kind.

I just bought a 2007 Camry LE with leather, moon roof, and wheel package in Houston for $22,425 + TTL. I thought I made a decent deal on a very good car. I couldn't decide on the 7 yr/70k mile warranty for $700.00 ($50 deductible). What do you guys think?
  • ltjggillespieltjggillespie Member Posts: 7
Hard to say on the warranty. I just bought an XLE V6 and didn't get it.

The thing you have to remember is that warranties are designed by actuaries to make a profit for the company (in the long run); there will of course be those instances where they will lose money on a particular customer, but overall the company makes a huge profit (that's why they pay such a large commission to the dealership for selling them). I traded a hyundai in for the XLE and I'll admit it was nice to have that added security. But let's face it, Toyota does not have a long standard warranty becuase most consumers don't feel they need it when they buy a Toyota; otherwise, their sales would be down especially with such tough competition. I suppose that the arguement could be made that a first year design (like the 07) might have more probelms than say a design that is 3 years plus, and would therefore warrant the cost. But again, $700 is a nice chunk of money for an extra 40k miles, especially if you finance and end up paying $1,000 for it at the end of the day.

My gut feeling says to put the $700 in a money market account earning 4% and don't touch it (unless you have to pay for repairs) until your car has 70k miles on it, I'll bet you have most if not all of the money left over at the end.
Just my two cents, hope it helps. :shades:

The wife and I went to purchase a Camry today. When the Sales Manager showed me the invoice, it had a distribution fee of $550 and a Southeastern Toyota fee of $635. Silly little old naiieve me thought that the Southeastern Toyota fee was $55 on top of the $580 distribution fee. But apparently, it's not.

Am I getting played here? What eaxactly is the Southeastern Regional fee? And is it to be paid on top of the destination fee?
  • scs111scs111 Member Posts: 22
My wife tried to drive her brand new Camry this morning and it would start but it wouldn't go over 5 miles per hour. The check engine light also came on. The dealer had it towed to their shop and they discovered the computer malfunctioned. It reset itself and ran fine but they gave me the option of picking out another comparably equipped car. The only difference is the "new" car had the sealant package which they through in for no charge. Due to the model change out, I decided to get the 7/75K Toyota Platinum extended warranty for $795.00. I may never need it but it gives my wife good piece of mind.

    Hello,

I received the following quotes: $18,700 plus TTL for the CE Camry and $19,500 plus TTL for the LE camry. Other than the power driver's seat and keyless are there any differences between the two trims? Any thoughts on pricing here in N. Calif.
  • njeraldnjerald Member Posts: 689
Just a less duller interior with metallic and chrome trim on the LE.
  • jph3006jph3006 Member Posts: 49
Yes, you are being played, the distribution fee is BS. Here is what you offer:
(Invoice + 3% )+ (options @ .80) + 635 destination in SE + tag, title, reg fees per your state set fees + state sales tax on invoice and options. There is a 2% holdback on MSRP on Toyotas added by the factory, so this is a fair 5% deal (7% is awesome for them) for the new car department at the dealership.
Toyota dealerships try to get you to pay market adjustment fees, advertising fees, documentation fees, or floor plan fees and they are just tools to sweeten the deal for them at your expense, I've never payed them. Good luck and have fun buying your car and be ready to leave the dealership if the delay you or try to talk the price up further and go to another.
  • swiftlivesswiftlives Member Posts: 8
I had a feeling something wasn't right there. None of the research I did led me to believe that I'd pay any other distribution or delivery fee than the SET distribution fee which was $635. Nowhere did I see anything about a $560 fee on top of that.

The only thing that gave me pause was that this fee was on the invoice he showed me.

The other line they kept giving me was about how they are legaly required to add on the documentation fee. When I asked them why their's was the highest in the state, ($399 here in Charleston as opposed to $189 in Greenville, SC) - they really didn't have an answer.

They didn't have the car we wanted on the lot. So they tried to upsell us to a Camry LE with Toyoguard. That basically was going to be just over $1000 more than we were willing to spend. (Their final offer was about $21,050). If Toyoguard was something we really wanted to begin with, we would have jumped on it.

The problem with the other dealership I went to – I showed them my price, and they didn't even bother negotiating with me. He came back with a much higher price ($21,700 for a base LE without Toyoguard) and we left. No chasing after us with a better price. Nothing.

So frankly, I'm not too enamored with either Toyota dealership in town at the moment. The only advantage West Ashley Toyota had was that they seemd significantly more eager to sell us a car. Gene Reed Toyota almost seemd not to care.

We still want a Camry, though. I just don't want to have to drive to Columbia or Myrtle Beach or Orangeburg to get it. Fortuantely, we're in no hurry.
