"Why not just get Internet quotes from a selection of dealers and then buy from the best one."

This was what I was wondering about. Do sites like carsdirect.com generally come back with a better price than just going to the dealers direct? Are there any advantages to using a site like carsdirect? Any info on experiences people have had would be a appreciated.
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
Carsdirect is a good place to get an idea of what sort of discount you can get. Also their invoice prices are usually spot on. Check the invoice price, then decide how much you feel is a fair profit for the dealership to make and then e-mail that offer to different dealerships in your area. On an 04 G35 I would suggest invoice plus $500 is a good starting point.

A local dealer called me yesterday telling me all their cars on the lot (they have about 40 or so on the lot) are invoice + $250. I am in So. CA.

Is this a good deal? I will go to the dealer this weekend to check out.
  • bobinlabobinla Member Posts: 10
What dealer gave you the $250 over? Will they put it in writing? I'm in So. Cal too.

    I just made a deal for a 2004 6mt coupe at $2000 under msrp
(in toronto). I guess its a case of more cars available and less people interested. Cold weather probably has something to do with it. I'm told this kind of deal will not likely be offered come spring.

I was just offered the following deal in the Maryland area for a G35 sport coupe. It is a 2004. The color is black with black leather interior. It has the premium package, areo package, and wheel and tire package. The sticker is 35,845. They offered me $34,500 which is about $2,200 over invoice. Is this a good deal or what?

    Bobinla,

It is Infiniti of Oxnard in Oxnard, CA. The guy will call me this Friday to schedule a time to meet in the weekend. I will find out if they will make on their words.

The G35 I plan to buy had an invoice of $29,182. I have a written quote from a local dealer of $29,782. That's a difference of $600. The price includes the $400 ad fee.

When people talk about getting a G35 at invoice plus X number of dollars, are they figuring in the $400 ad fee?

In other words, in the example above, am I getting the car at $200 over invoice plus the ad fee, or am I getting the car at $600 over invoice?

I know they add up to the same, but I am trying to compare this deal with other deals mentioned on this board. Thanks
  • jzwujzwu Member Posts: 10
The $400 ad fee is dealer added. I don't think Team Infiniti in Oxnard, CA has it. At least, the guy did not mention it on the phone.
  • clpurnellclpurnell Member Posts: 1,083
is on the "real" infinti invoice. I am sure your numbers would match up with carsdirect.com invoice pricing. Edmunds does not track ad fees as they vary by regions. (they should though because they ask for your zipcode the same as carsdirect). Ask him to show you the invoice if it is printed there that is the real invoice price and you pay x amount over that. If you aren't happy with that adjust your offer over/under invoice by 400.

    >>When people talk about getting a G35 at invoice plus X number of dollars, are they figuring in the $400 ad fee?<<

I wasn't, but the dealer was <g>. He told me $500 over invoice, so I did all my calculating and ciphering, and came up with my ideal price. His ideal price included the $400 ad fee (Chicago area), and I could not make it go away.

(It was printed on the invoice.)

Anyway, when all was said and done, I paid $162 over my ideal price, so I was very happy.

    Hello to everyone:

I am new to the board and recently discovered the G35 discussions. My husband and I have been searching for new car options for the past few months and test drove some of the models in Lexus' line. Last week we finally had a close encounter with a G35 and we both LOVED it! We test drove it at Cerritos Infinity and the sales person who helped us was very amiable and there was no pressure. Naturally, after the test drive it was time for some serious research on prices, options, etc. I submitted online requests through Edmunds, Cars Direct, through my credit union's buying service, through Costco's buying service, and through a great website- Autosfleet.com

Within 24 hours I received responses from several dealerships close to my house, but a lot of them were just emails asking me to call them. I did get a lone email directly from the fleet manager from one of the dealerships and he included his price for the car in the email and it was invoice, so it was a great start.

A week later (today), this is basically were I'm at with pricing:

I will be purchasing within two weeks a G35 RWD sedan in Twilight Blue with Willow leather including the Premium Package with the Sport Suspension/Pckg. and has the mats/splash guards.

    MSRP: 34,240
    Invoice: 30,901
    My "quoted" price was $31,000

I think that's great because I can save $3240 off sticker and with the dealer-hold back, the dealer makes roughly $1000.

Sorry for such a long post...my whole point is that all the buying advice from Edmunds really works, the dealers really don't bother with all the B.S. if you go straight to the fleet department or Internet Sales, they know you the "internet consumer" are already aware of their true pricing. By the way, all my local dealers that I have spoken to were accomodating, but Cerritos and Torrance had the best and most straightforward pricing.

Good Luck to everyone and I hope to be driving my new G35 soon!
  • jzwujzwu Member Posts: 10
Uscgirl, where did you get the final quote? Did it include the $400 ad fee? Thanks, jzwu
  • uscgirluscgirl Member Posts: 4
    jzwu:

That final price was inclusive of the ad fee and was at Infiniti Torrance. They have the exact car on the lot, so as a customer I have some leverage because they need to move the inventory out and get their holdback from the manufacturer.

I was also told today (I don't know if it true) that this is a great time to buy because the dealers are fully stocked for the New Year and need to sell fast to meet quotas, etc...

Hope this helps....if you need anymore info, let me know!

    =)

Aha! The land of $199.95 wheel locks and $199.95 floor mats.
  • bobinlabobinla Member Posts: 10
If a dealer tries to hit me up with a fee for floormats, can I assume this is just a bogus back end attempt to make additional profit?

BTW, does anyone know for sure what the Infinity dealer holdback is. I read somewhere it was 2% and then a dealer told me it was 1.5%

    Thanks
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
    It's 1% on Infiniti.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Well, actually it is "1% of the Base MSRP (holdback) + 2% of the Base Invoice."

    Link: Dealer Holdback.

I'm debating between this car and a BMW 3-series. One thing that is REALLY bothering me is that Infiniti wants you to pay almost $3,000 more just so you can have a manual transmission! I don't care what additional standard features you get with the manual transmission vs. the base coupe (with Auto tranny). Its just absolutely ridiculous.

Is this a common complaint, or am I the first one to bring this up? What's the likelihood that Infiniti would offer the manual transmission with the base model in the 2005 or later model?
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Hi marks1970 - those questions would be better placed in our ongoing Infiniti G35 discussion, since this one is dedicated specifically to Prices Paid and the Buying Experience.

That link will get you there directly!
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
Why is it ridiculous? The 6MT coupe is designed as an out and out drivers cars and has features accordingly. Which BMW even compares on what you get on a 6MT at $32550?
  • kgtripskgtrips Member Posts: 5
It is somewhat aggravating that the price for the 6mt is higher than the 5at but if you compare a 330ic with a 6mt coupe including all the same options the 6mt is thousands less. I just traded my 323i for a 6mt coupe and I find the 6mt to be a far superior car (that may ultimately be a matter of taste). I got it at 45,700$ cdn which is 2000 less than msrp with all options except nav. I bought it at Infiniti of Yorkville in Toronto. I got no BS and no changing of positions which is what happened with another dealer I tried to negotiate with. Anyone in the GTA who's looking should give these guys a try ( ask for Frank and tell him Ken sent you).

I posted my experience of buying my G35 Sedan at $3,200 off MSRP a little while back. Anyhow, I'm still receiving email ads from a few dealerships--and my deal is still available. So, I thought I'd help out potential buyers in Northern California.

The latest email ad from Pleasanton Infiniti advertises $3,200 off MSRP on the G35 Sedan (the same deal I was offered and eventually got). The email says this price is good until the end of January. As I stated in my original post, Pleasanton Infiniti didn't have the G35 Sedan in the color and options I wanted. Redwood City Infiniti matched the $3,200 off MSRP offer (after I provided them with a copy of the email ad from Pleasanton). So, I bought my car from Redwood City.

If you want to get this deal on the G35 Sedan in Northern California: Make email inquiries about the G35 Sedan to Pleasanton Infiniti (or sign up on their web site) in order to get on their email list. Then, once you have the offer in hand, call up the internet sales department at Pleasanton and see if they have the car you want in stock. If they don't have it, you can ask other dealerships to match the offer (I assume Redwood City will match it again).

I hope this helps some shoppers out there.

Just wanted to let the board know that I purchased my G35 tonight and its beautiful!

I bought it through the fleet manager at South Bay Infiniti (Torrance) and here is the info...

G35 with leather, Premium Package, Sport Suspension for $31,366 + tax/license/registration.

I saved almost $3k off MSRP and the dealer made about $1000, if not more (I'm not totally sure there isn't any other holdbacks/incentives, etc.)By the way, they were straightfoward, no b.s. and very nice and helpful. Excellant customer service at all the Infiniti dealerships we have dealt with, so far my experiance with Infiniti has been great.
  • marks1970marks1970 Member Posts: 25
Its ridiculous because I shouldn't have to pay $3K more simply to have a manual transmission. I'm content with the way the base G35 (w/ Auto) is equipped, so should I have to pay an extra $3K for stuff I don't want just for a stick? No. I understand that this is still considerably cheaper than a 330ci (thanks for your input kqtrips), but it still doesn't justify not offering a base manual.
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
Well I suggest if it upsets you that much (oh no! I'm being forced to have 18" alloy wheels, high performance tires, Brembo brake calipers, leather upholstery and a limited slip differential) then you go and buy something else and spend your life woorying about something important.

I live in the Toledo, Ohio area and want to purchase a G35 Sedan. There are no dealers nearby. Where have others in our area purchased their G35 and what has been your experience with that dealer? THANKS
  • mrelocmreloc Member Posts: 25
I live just north of you in Saline, MI. We have a dealer in Novi (Suburban Infiniti), but I am picking my car up in Grand Rapids tomorrow-(Pfeiffer Infiniti) dealt with them over the internet/phone and was able to negotiate the best price... Suburban would not match.

I'm planning on going in and buying my G35 this afternoon. Ive done my homework, got written quotes from other dealers etc. I've worked a couple dealers for free lifetime oil changes with sched. maint. Has anybody else got other freebies from their dealer? Thanks
  • mrelocmreloc Member Posts: 25
I pushed and got free all-weather mats when I saw the document preparation fee on my paperwork. They didn't balk at all.
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
Out of interest what was the document prep fee? If it's any more than $50 then it is being inflated.
  • mrelocmreloc Member Posts: 25
It was an amazing $160. My bottom line cost for the car (6MT sedan with premium package) was about $750 over invoice, so I didn't mind so much knowing the dealer has to make as much $ as possible. They wouldn't consider dropping it, though, so I pushed for the free mats.
  • bobinlabobinla Member Posts: 10
It was my understanding that floor mats came with the car. Is there a difference between "all weather" mats and regular floor mats?
  • mrelocmreloc Member Posts: 25
All weather mats are rubber and are an accessory for purchase.

The internet sales manager of my local dealer (Austin Infiniti, TX) emailed me about a special 2.9% APR for 60 mos on a 2004 G35 sedan until 2/2/04. This is also listed on the Infiniti website. I've decided that I want to buy the G. My dilemma is that the lease on my 2001 I30t is up on April 8th. I doubt that they will run an incentive program at that time so I am thinking if I buy a G35 then, I'll be looking at a 4.5% to 5.0% APR even through a credit union. Since I want a 60 month note, won't that interest rate difference result in a considerably more expensive loan over 5 years? I have to balance that against the extra lease payments ($509/mo) that the dealer would have to roll into the purchase price of the G35 car (prem.,sport) or I guess I could just all remaining lease payments in a lump sum. Right now I am OK on mileage, 1000 miles over, overage which should not increase before lease turn in. Should I buy now or wait?
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
Is the I30t on an Infiniti lease or is it with someone else. If it is with Infiniti, I would call IFS on Monday and see if they would take it back now with no further payment. They are very accomodating with this and you may be surprised. I would not as a dealer to check this for you but do it yourself.

My experience purchasing a 2004 G35 6MT Sedan in the SF bay area last weekend was far easier than I thought it would be.

I first did my homework and got invoice and holdback prices, and checked stock on the infinity website. No 6MT sedans at either of the 2 dealers near me. They each had 40+ 5ATs, though! Are the 6MTs really in demand, are are the dealers just stupid and not ordering any sticks? I find one 6MT in Colma and 3 6MTs in Pleasanton. The one in Colma is the exact color and options I want (Silver/Black w/Premium), and I find there is only one other like it in San Diego almost 400 miles away.

I saw alistaircookie's post (#1036) about the pleasanton 3200 off MSRP deal so I signed up and got them to email me the special: 3200 off MSRP and 1.9% financing off any G35 sedan in stock. I printed it out to use for haggling with the Colma dealer. Thanks for the info, alistaircookie!

I had planned my negotiating strategy, to ask Colma to match the deal or I would go to Pleasanton and just buy one there. I wasn't going to let them know pleasanton didn't have the right colors or options in stock. I was ready for the whole "its in demand, its the only 6MT you'll find in CA we only have one, 6MTs go for MSRP, etc".

So I call up Colma, verify they have the car, and schedule an appt to drive it (I hadn't driven a G35 stick yet so I wasn't sure I'd like it). I show up, drive it, like it, and sit down at the dreaded negotiating table. All the salespeople are whispering "it's the appointment guy" to each other (I guess that impressed them). First words out of their mouth, its on sale for MSRP-3288 (that's $30157, $54 below invoice). Sold!

I politely turn down all the paint protection, ext warranties, etc. and drive it home with 1.9% infinity financing and the only dealer fee being a $45 doc prep fee. Out the door at $32939.

I highly recommend the dealership in Colma!
  • havochavoc Member Posts: 27
Wibble, thanks for the reply. I actually never even thought about just turning in the car now so I will give IFS a call tomorrow to see if they will accept that offer. From what I am reading 2.9% is a very aggressive APR so I think I would be better off trying to take advantage of it now.
  • kdleekdlee Member Posts: 6
If you bought a G35, please drive your car at the rpm between 1200-1500 rpm (at the speed between 30-40 mph.) At some point, you can feel a vibration from your gas pedal. It seems that your car is trying shifting down and up and it's really sensitive to a small touch on the gas pedal. If you have the same behavior, please post it here. I just wonder if this is common for G35 Sedan Automatic.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Hi kdlee - I see you are posting about this issue in the Problems & Solutions discussion also. That's really the right place since this discussion is just about Prices Paid & Buying Experience.

You might want to stop by the general Infiniti G35 discussion to see if the folks there have any thoughts.

My local dealer in Tysons Corner, VA just offered me this:

2004 Infinity G35X AWD, Black with Black leather interior, Premium package, full size spare, trunk mat. MSRP 35705.00. Your Internet price will be 33550.00 + tax, tags, 299 processing fee.

Any views on whether this is a good offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thx

Looking for AWD sedan in NJ area. Premium package and Nav are desired. Anyone with experience dealing with the locals have an idea as to what I'm looking at paying? Thanks!
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
    "299 processing fee"

What is this? The usual document fee is $45. This looks like a bogus tack-on. I would definitely question it.

On the price, the invoice on that spec is $32,570 so we're looking at $980 over invoice. On an AWD that's not bad.

I am intested in purchasing a 4 dr G35 - Leather with my VPP discount and this is what I heard from a local dealer. They basically said, they accept the VPP pricing but they tack on a $1495 cost for a Northwest Package, which includes undercoating and special leather finishing to guarantee the interior for 5 years in case of damage and another $195 for wheel locks. Is this $1495+195=1690 for real ? It seams like the dealership is trying to find a loophole around the VPP process to earn more money. Like to get your thoughts. Anybody else experience these extra expenses from other dealerships with VPP
  • chrisbothchrisboth Member Posts: 493
wheel locks are free in PA - DO NOT PAY ANYTHING LIKE THIS - buy one on line for that 1690 less or more and have it delivered by some nicer more reasonable businesslike people.
  • wibblewibble Member Posts: 569
This, again, is nonsense. Nissan / Infiniti wheel locks cost the dealer around $20 per set of four and can be fitted in a matter of minutes. Any half decent dealer should provide and fit them for free. As for this "Northwest Package", this, as we say back home, is bollocks. It sounds to me like this dealer doesn't want to sell the car at the VPP price and is trying to recoup some of their lost gross. Remember that VPP pricing is set by Infiniti and the dealer has no say in it. The only decision they can make is to sell you the car or not. I would suggest you get in touch with a more reputable dealer even if it means getting your car out-of-state and having it shipped in.
A word to everyone else. Keep an eye out for stuff like this. Any documentation fee over $50, wheel locks for $200, all season floor mats for $200, chromed factory wheels for $3995, etc. are all money makers for the dealer and shouldn't be tolerated. As well as asking for a price over invoice, get an "out the door" price and get it confirmed in writing. If taking finance, take a calculator with you and check the numbers. I don't know how many times people I know have told me they got a great $200 over invoice dealer or the like just to get charged $5000 for a $1000 worth of add-ons they didn't need in the first place.
  • vancmtvancmt Member Posts: 22
Thanks for the feedback. After I sent out this message, I actually contacted another dealership ~2 hours away and that Infiniti dealer said they never add extra stuff for VPP pricing unless it's something the customer actually wants. It appears this dealership has actually taken away some of the 'overcharging' dealership's business already.

Great advice about getting an 'out the door' price. Up to this point, I had basically been talking around the invoice price, not thinking about the other downstream cost implications.

My experience in getting a G35 sedan in Bay area, CA.

After deciding to go with the G35 sedan, I thought I would try the Costco Auto Buying program. Lexus offered Invoice+$200. Then I went to Colma Infiniti through Costco Auto Program, and the Costco deal was Invoice+$1000. The dealer indicated that he would be willing to deal, but it would still required some negotiation.

Then I saw the post by alistaircookie on this BB.

So I sent email messages to all Bay area dealers through the dealer web sites. Got a response from a couple of them, one even looked up my number and left me a phone message. Included was the message from Pleasanton dealer about the $3200 off MSRP. Looked around the web sites, and found that only Pleasanton had the Silver/Grey with Sunroof. Went 01/19 morning to talk to them, and they offered the "Internet" offer. Signed the paperwork and picked it up that same evening.

Finally, it did not turn out to be a dreadful experience that I was afraid of.

Thanks to all for the information here.
