The only problem with the current system, from many sources at least, is that the gas tax only covers about 60% of the funding needed for the roads and bridges. There's a big subsidy going to all sorts of transportation, and the gas tax isn't enough to cover the costs, even when you adjust for the money spent on light rail.

All that infrastructure keeps the economy moving and it always boils down to how you want to pay for it.

Oregon is on the low end of the gas tax spectrum. They could just raise their tax a dime. What I find ironic is Oregon is one of the states with the most Eco Weenies, and it was the eco weenies in the universities that came up with tax by mile. The only logical answer is the fear of going all EV and getting NO road tax. A bloated pig Tesla puts more wear and tear on the roads than a Honda Civic and pays no road tax.

I agree, the gas tax needs to be increased. But why is it easier to implement a whole new system then increase the tax/gallon? I'd much prefer a higher gas tax, and live with the EV problem for now.

I agree, all they have to do is charge a mileage fee on the license renewal each year. You drove your Tesla on our roads 10,000 miles last year, that will be $150 mileage charge. No millions for GPS gadgets and infrastructure that will likely cost more to maintain than they take in. Governments are NOT efficient.

How does the government know how many miles you drove last year - the honor system?

I'd be fine with just eliminating the various EV tax incentives and giving them a free ride on road use, as the major incentive for buying them.

Lane County, Oregon(Eugene area) just tried to pass a vehicle registration fee of $35 per year for every car and truck, and $20 for motorcycles. This is on top of what we pay for vehicle registration to the state.

Went down in flames, 66% against. I was please with this, as I have a "farm truck" that sees MAYBE 1200 miles per year, and half of that is off road. I'm certainly not alone...

They are also looking to increase gas taxes by 29 cents this year.

People are pissed off that when the taxes increase, the funds NEVER SEEM TO GO where they were supposed to.

We see government employees that have won the lottery with their gold-plated benefits, while the rest of us peons struggle to stay afloat.

Meanwhile, the eco-weenies drive their Priuses and ride their bicycles, expecting EVERYONE ELSE to live like they do. I for one would NEVER live in town...that's not a good life...

Just put your Odo on the license renewal form. If you are lying it will catch up when you sell. My insurance company Farmers asks for a mileage every year as I get a discount for low mileage.

If they add 29 cents to the current 31, a total of 60 cents will put them at the top of the list. I think PA has the lead now with 70 cents total gas tax. Oregon would be at least 78 cents. The race is on. Your new governor is no friend to the middle class tax payers. Still beats Moonbeam. You should count your blessings. You only pay 8.48 cents per KWH for electricity. Our top tier rate went up to 42 cents this month.

    PS
You should have bought a couple miles South in Douglas County. Lower property taxes. B)

Thinking about buying some land down there...

There are a couple places down near Drain in Douglas Cty, I would like to look at. Hoping to make it back up there in early September. I like your friend's place on Hootons Corners.

Problem is, those with their fingers on the buttons are fine mix of greedy and corrupt - the money will evaporate before all of it reaches the intended destination. Like the bertha and bridges in my backyard you like to mention.

Fintail's solutions: repeal the de facto subsidies for the FIRE cabal that are all of the endless mortgage and housing related deductions, channel this money into infrastructure. Place extra burden on sketchy offshore money speculating in local real estate, raise the cost of the "investor" visa program, funnel these funds into infrastructure. End tax breaks for $90K electric cars, funnel the money into infrastructure. End the unfair public sector perks - no more 85 at 55 and underfunded pensions and other nonsense, funnel the subsidization into infrastructure.

And whatever you do, don't give Teslas free carpool lane access like some idiot bought and paid for guilted patronizing greenie weenie local politicos have wanted to do.

Heck, this could probably give us better infrastructure and transit, and single payer healthcare like other developed nations.

Actually, I may be able to pick up some land just outside of Drain from an in-law.

Agree about that place on Hooton's Corner. I saw the various stages of construction when he was upgrading/restoring it. He did a nice job.

We've been sitting at $2.79 for about a week, down from $2.85

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
On the road across southern Texas and finding regular for around $2.55.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Gas coming down in San Diego. Filled PU today at Costco $3.37 two weeks ago it was $3.77. Waiting for diesel to hit $2.75 at my local station to fill the Touareg.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Average in Texas is running $2.57, been seeing diesel about a dime higher. Guess it's a little cheaper in Houston. The radio blurb with those numbers claims that the refinery maintenance is over and it's full speed ahead on production, with the chance for lower prices for the rest of the summer.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Filled up in Chattanooga today for $2.42 at a Mapco. Most stations are running $2.59 for regular. Diesel seems to be $2.67 most places. Saw Premium for $2.89.

Rough Sunday night in the oil biz I guess... $2.79 Sun afternoon, $2.93 this morning :s

    Ouch.

I just spent the last week on vacation - drove from CO to AZ and back.

Mid-grade (either 87,88 or 89 octane, depending on state) ranged from $2.76 (CO) to $2.96 (AZ).

Just got regular for $2.50 in Russellville KY. Diesel was $2.80 which seemed high.

    Most gas is running $2.59.

Nice filling up the van for less than $40 (only needed 3/4ths of a tank though).
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Running low on gas in my PU truck so I went to the local Union 76 station. It is now an Oxxo station. They have the cheapest RUG at $3.49 cash price. I think it must be Mexican company. Hope it runs ok. Shell across the street is $3.69 cash or CC. I could have driven to Costco and saved $4.20 and used 2 gallons getting there and home. They know that in our little village and price gas accordingly.

We got gas for $2.69 yesterday and I was hard pressed to see any regular any cheaper on the backroads. Diesel was mostly a bare dime higher.

$2.69 regular, $2.79 for diesel. Glad that $8 drop in crude prices is working its way through the refineries so fast. :p

California is not so lucky. Our supply of designer RUG is running low and the prices have rocketed up. The little corner where I buy diesel with CC has RUG this morning at $3.84. Diesel dropped to $2.89.

Finally saw some movement for RUG at my local Kroger ... down .04 to $2.599. Let's hope it's the start of a nice downward trend over the next several months (or longer).

I have to drive 15 miles to get any RUG for less than $4.50 per gallon. Trying not to put many miles on my gas hog Nissan PU. My station posted above went up another dime today, RUG $3.94. So RUG is now $1.05 more than diesel.

Oh to be in California now that gas prices have dropped a penny.

Gas prices to stay high as Exxon Mobil refinery woes drag on (LA Times)

RUG here is still running around $2.69.

What part of the US are you in @fordgirl15? Kind of pricey gas.

Here in Cruces, I filled up at the cheap gas place on Main Street that's in the middle of the endless construction zone. Paid $2.56 - a full dime cheaper than most places around town.

    Diesel there was $2.53.
  • fordgirl15fordgirl15 Member Posts: 90
Ya it is. The lowest we saw was close to 2.00 gas. It's up again. Central USA!:-) Iowa! Where are you?

Iowa? I thought corn was cheap up there. :-)

We moved to Las Cruces NM almost a year ago from the UP of MI, and have been saving on gas ever since. We're a little out of town though and the propane is a killer since natural gas hasn't quite made it out here yet.
  • fordgirl15fordgirl15 Member Posts: 90
Haha! Lol! I don't follow the corn prices so not sure!:-) they had alot of our gas stations in ethanol for awhile. Casey's is one tht always had non-ethanol but now anymore you can't find a Casey's without ethanol. So u used to be from Michigan?! Tht state sounds very familiar to me!:-)

$2.779 for RUG at Kroger this past week. Given that crude is hovering around $50/bbl, I don't get that gasoline prices haven't come down as well.

Oil's down to $50 a barrel - the refineries will eventually have to pass some of that savings on to us. Except in California.

(Was in MI ~4 years helping out with my MIL; lots of other places before that).
  • fordgirl15fordgirl15 Member Posts: 90
Oh Ya very gud! Used to live there ourselves before we moved to Idaho. I hope gas prices comes down here though. Wish it was less then 2.00 a gal! You know the farmers grow the corn to make ethanol but then they don't buy it!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Before MI, we were in Boise for ten years. We had limited competition there - not much in the way of gasoline pipelines, much less refineries, and lots was tanked in.
