Hello @brian125, I am looking for a CRV EX AWD in the NJ/NY area and am looking to buy this week. What is the target price I should be aiming for? In all the sites such as truecar and edmunds tmv they list their "best price" to be around 26k-26.5k which is little above and at invoice. I noticed that you live in the same region and would you think I would be able to negotiate a lower price than the ones suggested by the websites? You also recommend waiting till the end of the month, how long before the end of the month should I start the negotiation process? Also, would you be able to recommend any dealers in that area? So far I've only had contact with Honda of Nanuet since that's where my wife went for a test drive. thanks

What is the vehicles selling price? Stick with a 3yr, 36 month lease so vehicle is covered under warranty. Those extra 2 months being uncovered could cost you $$$ at the end.

Hey brian how do you exactly figure out what the invoice price is? I did some research but still am not clear what it means...
I check prices right here on Edmunds or Nada .com . It could be confusing if your knew to the Edmunds site.

I find Nada .com a lot easier.

It's not that hard .. just use the "make / model / year" pull downs at the top of the page to link to the Edmunds pricing tools. Follow the prompts to get the MSRP, invoice and TMV pricing.

Taxes , tags , doc fee are the fee's tacked on after your agreed selling price. This makes up your OTD price.

    Hello Everyone,

I am about to buy my first car. I havent figured out on cr-v or accord yet but its most probably a CR-V.

I have no idea on negotiations. I dont know how to do it and I am looking to buy the car within 3 days ie before the end of the month

I am looking at the CR-V EX AWD or a 2WD . I am not sure what is okay for chicago's winters.

Truecar says a 25200+ 200 or so doc fees for EX AWD CR-V.

Whats the price i should ask them for?

I would appreciate if someone could give me numbers i should be aiming for chicagoland. I dont honeslty understand much more in the negotiation game.

    Thank you :)

PS : I guess invoice is $26,037 with $880 destination charges. So I am at 500 below invoice.

    Honda EX-L AWD

    New tag...$424
    Taxes...$,1761.62
    Total OTD... $30,713.62

    Thanks

This deal is $56 dollars above invoice price after considering high doc fee charge of $650.. A terrible deal compared to other deals in here and in FL. . Do not buy work on getting a lower selling price. Negotiate with more dealerships. Your target price range should be 1000 to 2k below your models invoice price. Buy at the end of this month last few days, last day which will help you net a better price.

    EX-L , awd invoice w/ dest charge = ............... 28,471

    @brian125 How about this deal

    Honda EX-L AWD CRV

    Selling price 27,272
    Dealer/document fee 650

Top deal is better at 549 below invoice price. Bottom deal is at 202 below dealers invoice. Just pick the model you like best and buy it.

AWD is not needed in Florida. Save the extra money and buy a fwd model CRV.

    Good luck

@brian125 Thanks for the quick reply. I'm possibly relocating to NY next year, so I thought the better choice would be the AWD, is AWD necessary in NY ?

Also, Isn't a good/great deal supposed to be at least 1000.00 below invoice?

    Hi all,

    As a followup to my prior post. Looking to lease a Honda CRV LX AWD. Have the following details;

    MSRP: 25,575
    Price from dealer: 23,654
    Residual Value: 16,797
Lease term: 39m (trying to get 36m)
    MF: .00105

Calculating those out, I should have the following on a monthly basis:

    Depreciation: $175.85
    Financing: $42.47
    Tax: $19.37
    Total monthly: $237.67

Dealer is quoting me $255 sign and drive (DMV and 1st month at signing).

I'm going to go in Thursday night to see what I can get them down to as they should have wiggle room on the price. Does my math above make sense and any opinions on how to handle when I go into the dealer?

$25,400 was the lowest I could get after visiting 3 dealers in NY/NJ. I was happy with the price. It was much lower than the "TrueCar" price, and they threw in some freebies like wheel locks, edge film, etching, etc.

Terrible deal at $167 below invoice.

Negotiate further or with more dealerships . Buyers in your area SoCal. are getting close to 1400 below dealers invoice price. Go thru message board here and read prior postings to see what dealerships our forum members purchased at and made better deals.

Target this price or close to it..................$ 23,467. ( this price includes 880 dest charge )

    good luck

Hi, would like to find out numbers for Honda CRV EX-L in NC. I was at dealership today but I was not aware of the lease calculations to get all the details up front. Here is what I was offered - MSRP 29900, Monthly 445 with 1150 down (includes dealer fees, title, first month payment and tax).

If you have not purchased a vehicle yesterday wait till end of the 1st week this month for Honda to post there new incentives / rebates for the month. Hopefully a 500/ 1000 incentive will help buying in area's like CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, NC, SC, Seattle where pricing is not as good as other states.

Current Honda incentives are valid until 5/11/15 - I would expect to see new numbers after that.

    Be careful.

In the 13.5 years I sold Hondas there were times when we expected some incentives to continue when they didn't.

It's all about supply and demand. As the summer months approach they could very well taper off as inventories shrink. The "new numbers" could end up being worse numbers or no incentives at all.

    Hello Brian,

I need help with trying to figure out if my deal is any good. I am in North California( East Bay). This is for CRV-LX -FWD. Here is the breakdown:
    True Price/ Invoice Price? : $21,888
    Doc Fee : $80
    Non Tax Fee : 285.75
    Tax : 1,922.20
    Total OTD : 24,175.95

What do you think of the price? Should I still aim for 1000-1500 below the invoice price? I am looking to purchase this week, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
  • relokaterelokate Member Posts: 2
    Brian,

Thank you so much for the input. From what I understand, the price I am getting even without haggling seems to be pretty decent, plus or minus $300.

Another dealer offered me a 2014 LX for the following:
    20,888 invoice
    $80 doc fee
    $1922.20 tax
    $275 non tax fees
    $ 23,275 OTD

The incentive i guess is that people are not reporting as many idling or vibration issues with the '14. Shoud I expect to pay less ? Do you think this is a good deal if I plan to drive the car for a while? Not exactly a car fanatic, so just need a reliable commuter car.

Apologize for asking so many questions. It is kinda overwhelming for a novice negotiator. :)

    Thanks, Brian.

2014 lx model deal is not good at 1700 below dealers invoice. 2500 to 3000 below that years invoice is what you should target Or buy the 2015 model.

@relokate, Honda changed engines for the 2015 CR-V so buying the 2014 would most likely avoid the vibration issue some '15 owners are reporting.

And if you drive it forever (~10 years?), you won't care about the initial depreciation hit. Your insurance company may hammer you a bit though, if it winds up getting totaled in the first three or four years.

If you get to the dealer and get swamped with details, you can always call or text us during our Live Help hours, daily 8AM-5PM Pacific. Check the Live Help link on the home page tabs for the numbers or chat box.

Here is my experience emailing over a dozen Honda dealers in NJ, NY, PA and DE on May 5th 2015 to purchase a 2015 CRV AWD EX-L. No incentives, no military or grad discount. For everything price with $880 destination, 7% NJ tax, DMV 4 year new registration and tags (around $350), admin fees (typically $100-399 in NJ). Note, make sure MSRP is above 30+ or the quote might be for a FWD:

After initial responses, in my reply email I indicated the lowest price and at least 5 dealerships went down to $30,250. Paul Miller didn't answer initially, but countered in the reply email with the lowest price on the list. Picked Nanuet in the end because it is having a free Honda lawn mower promotion.

Hello. I live in St. Louis, MO and would like to purchase a 2015 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD. How do you figure out the invoice price? I found the invoice price of $27,952 on http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/Honda_CR-V/prices/ and have started emailing dealers asking for $2k under invoice price. The dealers act like I'm insane for asking that amount. I was wondering if I have the incorrect invoice price for my region and if $2k under invoice price is too much to ask for? I'm aware it's not the end of the month but my car was totaled last week and today is the last day of my rental car. I want to make sure I'm getting a fair offer. Thank you for any help, I really appreciate it.

Hello, I'm looking for the best price available for a 2015 CRV EX-L FWD in Norther California. Have read most of the 23 pages in this thread and it looks like some in NorCal folks are paying around $26,500 + TTL, but did not indicate which dealership. I would like to know if anyone could provide the name of the dealership where I could get that type of deal in NorCal.

    Thanks All.

@dancin2beats, we show the same invoice price, plus destination of $880 ($28,472 total). True Market Value for a zip code of 63101 is $28,899. That includes destination but no options. And TMV is an average price so your target is to get under $500 over invoice + destination.

$2,000 under invoice isn't doable in lots of areas for various reasons (demand and dealer competition being big factors). And you need a car "today" so that's working against you.

If you have time, use the dealer quote service here and get dealers to give you numbers instead of asking them to meet your price. Then play the two or three dealers with the lowest email quotes against each other.

If you don't have time, aim for TMV, check out a Price Promise certificate and then sit back and enjoy the ride, knowing that your CR-V will enjoy a good trade-in value when it's time for a new one (hopefully not due to another accident!).

(@low_ball_88, try getting some quotes too).

what do you think of the current national advertised lease deal?

2015 cr v lx fwd model.    Down payment 1,999.  Monthly payment 239 for 39 months.  12k per year mileage.   Plus all the usual doc registration taxes.

I'm not sure if the 599 acquisition fee is included in the initial down payment or not.

Went  to one dealer.  Sales guy says they can't change the term because it's honda promotion? True or false?

I'm not a big fan of leasing any vehicle where the warranty runs out before the lease term ends. That could spell trouble. My 2013, exl v-6 Accord had a transmission leak inside the casing with 4000 miles in its 2nd year. Honda had to put a new trans in vehicle which was under warranty.

You should be able to get a similar price deal for the same lease term of 36 months. Find out on that lease deal 39 months what the vehicle selling price is? Let me know what area you want to buy. Every thousand dollars less than Honda lease price will save you about 30 dollars a month. A lot of lease deals are figured out closer to MSRP not Invoice price or below like a lot are getting .

national lease programs can't be changed.

Good advice as always, Brian, except for the last statement. You can do better than the national lease deal with shrewd negotiating - most of them offer a token discount from MSRP. Also, most of those deals require money down - you can choose not to do that, with the resultant increase in payment.

what do you think of the current national advertised lease deal?

A lot of lease deals are figured out closer to MSRP not Invoice price

national lease programs can't be changed.

Check out this site ; http://www.infiniteleasing.com/ they lease lower end models at very competitive prices most of the time better than dealers with no money down. Folks looking for a basic model make out good with Infinite.

They advertise CRV LX $249................. 0 down 36/12 plus taxes. 3 colors to choose from.

    $30,627 VIP Honda Costco $27,000
    $30,125 PaulMiller N/A
    $30,882 Average
After initial responses, in my reply email I indicated the lowest price and at least 5 dealerships went down to $30,250. Paul Miller didn't answer initially, but countered in the reply email with the lowest price on the list. Picked Nanuet in the end because it is having a free Honda lawn mower promotion.
    I hope this helps everyone!

A lawn mower promotion?? Do tell!
Yup, a 21" twin blade variable speed self propelled beauty, retailing for $400 at Home Despot. Used it today and two week high grass on my front hill went down like butter with no clumps on "mulch" setting. Basically paid under $30k OTD for a 2015 EX-L (winning).

I don't know about supply/demand in StL but when you slice my NJ numbers by invoice the average offer was about $500 below invoice but the best was about $1100 below (not counting the free mower).

That is exactly the price market in NJ. with most smart buyers getting between 500 to 1000 below invoice after taking the 299/ 399 doc fee into consideration. I helped a buyer pick up a Accord Lx last month at Auto-sport for 1400 below dealers invoice last day of April. Vehicle was on lot . Accords seem to sell cheaper below invoice than a CRV.

I'm no expert but I think you robbed 'em. TrueCar invoice price for this model is $27,566. How did you do it?

I think it also helps that there is a Honda dealer every 10-15 miles across all of Southern California. Easy to get them to compete with one another on price, and the dealer who did best may have needed that one sale to hit a volume bonus.

Michaell is correct, we have 5 dealers in 20 miles radius. I got this quote from a dealer who is 50 miles from my place and famous for adding forcible accessories. Then I contacted my nearest dealers for the price match, after 2 hours of negotiations one dealer quoted his best price is 26300 and he said they are giving many freebies like free oil changes for 3 years etc.. When I ready to close the deal, he doesn't have the color I am interested in Copper Sunset Pearl. Looks like he don't want to sell the car to me, He said if he has Copper color, he won't give it for 26300. Then contacted the second dealer, he said he can give the car for my price only for memorial day week end sale. But he finally agreed and also he got my color from other dealer.

    Nothing is ever "free".

If that shopper would have said "I live in a condo and have no use for a lawn mower, will you keep it and reduce the price?" I'm sure that would have happened.

Same applies to oil changes or anything else that is thrown in for free.

Sounds good though and people buy for that reason!
