I've been looking at Pilots (and also at Highlanders). I currently have a 1998 Rav4. For purchasing, there is balloon/buyback option which Toyota, Honda and Ford offer (probably others, too). Is my understanding correct: Say I buy the Pilot for $30000. My car and down adds to $10000. That leaves $20000 financed. If the buyback is $10000, then I actually finance the remaining $10000 for 3 years. At the end of the 3 years, the Pilot is worth $15000 Blue book. Honda buys it back for $10000 and I use the remaining $5000 for a down on another car? Is this correct?

    Thanks.

In a strange, roundabout way ... sort of. I take it you live in NY? (otherwise you'd be talking about leasing)

Well, I can't speak to the validity of your numbers, but as far as the general concept works, most of it pretty much sums it up. HOWEVER, if the buyback is actually lower than what the car is worth, you would have to actually purchase the car and trade it back in to take advantage of the equity. toyota and honda, from what I understand, are pretty good at guessing what the vehicle will be worth, so don't expect there to be any equity in the end.

Ultimately, you are trading in a car you now own and have equity in AND putting up some cash on top of that, right? THEN, at the end of the 3 years, you have a car that you owe exactly what its worth. In other words, in 3 years, you will go from having a car that you own and have equity in AND having some cash TO not having that cash and having a car that has zero equity. In exchange, however, you will have had very low payments for 3 years. Personally, I'd give no cash when making the deal.

Yeah, New York. I don't care about the figures; they were just made up. But I like you point about having equity at the end, and also your analysis of what I am giving up. So, if you are correct in that at the end I would owe what the car was worth, so I would end up with nothing. Interesting scenario. Again, THANKS.

Here's the info on 2005 Pilot EX w/ Leather from Madison Honda, in Madison NJ.

    $29,000 plus 6% sales tax
$322 registration fee ($58 if you transfer plates)
$28 customer computer set up (how dumb is that?)
    $168 document fee

Not a bad deal for the area. Only thing--dealer is dragging feet on delivery even though the car is on the lot. Claims to be overwhelmed with paper work and now won't even return calls in a timely manner. (had no problem calling every day to try to sell the car) Put a deposit down last Friday morning and may be able to pick up on Wednesday.
  • brickyarddogbrickyarddog Member Posts: 38
If my calculations are correct, this puts you about $610 under invoice. With your cap cost reduction, the best deal I've seen would have put you at about $250 per month, so I'd say you didn't do too bad at all!

    carguy1234,

Nice to know that I'm not the ONLY one in the Twin Cities area. Thanks for the info. From what I can gather from the posts, some people from other areas are able to get 1000+ under invoice but the Twin Cities dealers don't seem to negotiate as much. Interesting to hear that Hopkins Honda has a bigger inventory as when I inquired via email with the internet manager they offered the best deal ($300 over invoice) without any negotiation. I'm guessing I could get substantially lower. I'm with you though that I am NOT in a hurry and can wait things out a bit. I'd love to see some incentives or at least get some more info on what others are paying in this area. I'm also willing to go to Wisconsin if need be. Stay in touch and hopefully we can get more info from this board.
  • brickyarddogbrickyarddog Member Posts: 38
I'm not overly familiar with the area, so I'm not sure how far of a drive this is for you, but there is a dealership outside of Milwaukee that consistently gives good quotes. They are mentioned a lot on this board in the Accord topics. Wilde Honda - Waukesha, WI.

You can purchase an automobile through the Costo plan. Go to www.costco.com, click on the Service tab on the top of the screen, and then select Auto Sales. My friend purchased a vehicle through the Costco plan and had a good experience. Basically Costco negotiates a price with select dealerships, and that is the no-haggle price that you pay. You do have to be a Costco member to take advantage of this service.

In my opinion, the price the dealer quotes is always negotiable. The dealers exist to make money, so they aren't going to quote the lowest price they are willing sell the vehicle.

I would also look into the terms for the 100K service warranty that Dick Hannah offers. Are you only allowed to have warranty work performed at their service center? What happens if you move out of town or state?

    Good luck out there.

I am asking for Internet quotes from several dealers in Atlanta. So far my best drive out $ is

    LX: 25,060 + 7% tax = 26,814.20
    EX: 28,400

FYI - title is $21, frieght is $515, doc proc varies

How's this look? Do I keep pushing?
  • chuminthewaterchuminthewater Member Posts: 91
For an EX - and I was happy - it was done strictly on line. I know I could have gotten a bit better deal, but I was (and remain) satisfied, I get some freebies with it, and the dealer was and remains quite pleasant to work with.

If you are getting $28.4 OTD - take it.

Mine included 3.17% tax, and $289 processing fees - just for comparison purposes, TTL was also in that price.
  • brickyarddogbrickyarddog Member Posts: 38
Invoice on an EX is 27,661. So, it depends what else is included in your 28.4 price.

26,500 is the best sale price I've read for an EX, but that wouldn't have included tax, title, or any dealer fees.

Any input on what folks are negotiating for in Upstate, New York?
  • mratlmratl Member Posts: 13
Now I am wondering if it is worth it to go up to the EX. I am not a fancy guy. Dont need the wheels, roof rack or zillions of speakers.
Is it worth it?? Atlanta is very short on LX's in lot (0 to 2 at dealerships) although many EX's are sitting around.

I am going to buy Honda Pilot in next couple days.
What is a good price for Pilot in Chicago area?
Any positive/negative dealer experience in Chicago area?
    Thanks for any info.
  • bigblueindybigblueindy Member Posts: 18
From looking at the web Grand Honda in Chicago has some good deals on the Pilots. Just go to their website and it will give you some examples. I would say right at invoice would be the price you would want to pay on any level of the Pilot.
  • ttumblesttumbles Member Posts: 1
I think there may have been a price increase recently. The best price I can find is $29,188 + TTL.

I called Stevens Creek Honda and they laughed at me for asking for your price. They said they would only match it if I gave them your name. I figure they want to claim that your Pilot didn't have some particular feature.

Did you have a tradde-in? Did Stevens Creek Honda give you a good price?

    Thanks,

    Tim
  • jinhuijinhui Member Posts: 2
Tim, I didn't have a trade-in, there was no dealer-installed accesories except for wheel locks, which they threw in for free, the car had about 25 miles and was produced in 02/05. What I did do though was to bring in a quote for that price from another dealer (printout of an email message, I got that quote from Fremont), the saleperson did say that it was their policy to match quotes.

Fremont came back with that quote first time I emailed them, so you probably want to give them a try.

    Good Luck,

You would actually finance (and pay interest) on the full $20,000 but only pay enough P&I over the course of the loan to pay it down to $10,000 which you owe as one lump payment at the end.

So, at the end if can get $15K from it then, Yes, you get to keep the $5k net or use it for a down payment. The key is IF you can get 15K.

And, one question: Where did the value of $10K for the buyback come from? Is that the amount that Honda garantees it will pay you at the end or a 'suggested' value that might vary based on mileage, condition, etc.

I believe I've done enough research prior to purchase and finally bought 2005 Pilot EX (cloth) for $27,300 this past weekend. Thought of sharing it with you all and see what you ladies & gents think of this deal. Bought it in PA, just outside of Philadelphia.
    -- negotiated 27,300
    -- tax 1,638
-- registration & some other doc fees 147.65

    -- total 29,085.65

    -- financing at 4.24 for 60 months for 26,085.65 (I put $3,000 down).

Still waiting for a few more, but here is what I have so far:

    Rosenthal (Vienna) - $30,371
    Sheehy (Alexandria) - $30,997.45
    Landmark (Alexandria) - $30,371

Of course, I want to add some accessories so that will help make up my mind. Looks like they are all willing to throw in:

This evening (2/26/05) i finalized my Honda Pilot EX-L deal at Bernardi Honda (Natick,MA) dealership.

    2005 Pilot Ex-L (Silver) - $28,810
    Running boards - $ 785
    ---------
    Total $29,595

    Documentation Fee - $198
    Tax + Title + Registration - 1150+

    '03 Nissan Sentra trade-in(5500 miles) - $9500

I got a quote of $29,665 via e-mail thru the same dealership. I went to the dealership asking them to either match or beat the Pilot's price of $28,810 and Nissan Sentra trade-in of $9500. The dealership matched the price. The deal took about 2 Hrs. I also got 2.9% (60 months) APR financing from the dealership. I feel really good about the deal.

I got the number $28,810 from one of the user on this website who bought EX-L through Herb Chambers a month ago.

Even though I've used this site just couple of times, i have obtained very valuable info from this forum. Thanks for the help folks.

Got a good deal at Rosenthal Honda in Vienna:

OTD Lease Price $34124 (incl. $1256 for rearview camera)

Made the deal working with the Internet sales team. The accessories guy did try to get me to purchase glass breakage sensors for $399, but I politely declined. I did get 2 years of free oil and lube, and they also threw in a free 7500 mile service.

If I were not such a stress case, I'd be out celebrating right now. I woke up at 3 am and thought I had gotten ripped off. The math was just not adding up.

So I went over there this morning at 11:30, and they were really nice about it. The finance guy talked me through the whole thing. The Senior Sales Manager said he did not want me to leave the dealership until I was understood everything and was satisfied that I got a good deal.

Now that the math all makes sense (even to this math-deficient person), I am one satisfied customer. I would urge all NoVA pilot buyers to give Rosenthal a shot. Their Internet sales team is top notch -- or maybe I just got lucky with my salesman. Email me, and I will give you his name. The guy is the most honest and well mannered salesman I have come across.
  • buck0086buck0086 Member Posts: 52
I'm very impressed with your deal. Could you explain in a little more detail how you used the 28,810 number from the website? And do you have any other suggestions for getting such a good deal? Thanks.
  • chuminthewaterchuminthewater Member Posts: 91
Quasi dealerships - including Landmark Honda - and Fairfax Honda, I personally would never ever again deal with Rosenthal anything.

I went to Sheehy, They not only met the best price I got - with no haggling they beat it.

Suggest you call over to them and tell them what you have in writing from the other dealers.

Rosenthal - lost our business with all the tactics, bait and switch, poor comm, low ball trades - I could go on - and this happened on not one deal but 2.
  • depdep Member Posts: 79
As of about a month ago the going rate for a Pilot EX-L was ~$500-$800 UNDER invoice with the EL-L Nav going for $200-$500 under all plus TTL and doc fee only; including dest.

Try Muller Honda if they are within driving distance for you; deal with the internet manager.

I received a quote of 30,400 including the destination fee for a Honda Pilot EX-L with the DVD System wity Curry Honda in NY. Is this a good deal?
  • natickpilotnatickpilot Member Posts: 3
On one of the postings here, some buyer paid $28,810 for 05 Pilot EX-L. That's where i got the number. I took the number to the dealership and asked them to beat or match. I mentioned the source for figure $28,810 as some other dealership.

I also mentioned the source of my trade-in (03 Nissan Sentra GXE-$9500) value figure as some other dealership.

On this website, i searched using the keyword "MA" to located the buyers info around Boston area. After my research, i picked one number ($28,810) and went to the dealership where i didn't have to sweat much.

Some one on this forum has paid $28,462 for 05 EX-L in Seekonk, MA area. I think this deal was finalized few months ago. Seekonk Honda dealership is far way from my place and hence didn't go there.

When you go to any dealership, just tell them that you have got the number $28,462 for '05 Pilot EX-L from a dealer. Ask them to beat or match the price. See what they have to say.
  • natickpilotnatickpilot Member Posts: 3
Based on my experience and research, I would say $29,750 (including dest. fee) is a great deal for 05 Pilot EX-L DVD in MA area. I don't think the price will vary from MA to NY dealers.
  • jontaljontal Member Posts: 1
Those seem low. The Landmark and Sheehy are $500 under invoice w/o destination.

I'm in the market for the same and haven't gotten quotes this low.

    Are they in writing?

I have a quote from a dealer in NJ for a leftover 2004 Honda Pilot EX-L entertainment system with running bords, croosbars and cargo tray for $28,500. Wondering if it is worth it or should I get a 2005?
  • thegov3thegov3 Member Posts: 5
So far I have four quotes on a EX-L with an invoice price of $29,589. All include destination charges of $515.

I have a few more coming, including a Costco quote. But for now, I cannot get anyone lower than $29,859 which is a mere $300 over invoice.

    $30,468 (3% over invoice);
    $29,888;
    $30,000;
    and $29,859

Does anyone know if a Costco quote is typically at or below invoice? Should I hold out for more. I would like to get the 2.9 finance rate which ends April 1, 2005.

Forget that '04 leftover. The '05 is an improved product (we've had both) and worth the extra you'll pay.

I just did a price TMV with Edmunds and they came up with $1,100 over invoice.

Compared to what I see buyers getting here I'd say that's high, but then again I haven't seen a deal from my area.

Any pricing that can be shared from Northern Calif. would be appreciated. I'm looking for an EX-L w/ RES. thx
  • thegov3thegov3 Member Posts: 5
Just took home a 05 EX-L for $30,000 even including destination. Got some rear mud flaps too. I had six quotes all within $500 dollars of each (see above post).

I could not get anyone down below $29500. And boy did I try. The low quote dealer low balled my trade by 2,500 bucks, so, I switch gears and bid my trade out to all six and took the highest offer with the resulting best net.

I ended up getting about $1000 more than KBB on the trade and thus I ended up around 1% below invoice (with destination). Not bad, not good either. I was spending too much time worring over a couple of hundred bucks. In the end, I spent that just driving around town to get trade quotes.

Happy with the new Steel Blue Pilot.

What is the best OTD pricing anyone is getting on '05 EXL-w/DVD Ent and at what Washington State dealerships? Are any going below invoice to make room for Ridgelines?
  • chuminthewaterchuminthewater Member Posts: 91
I paid ex - no leather.

About 500 to 800 under invoice w/dest included. (i forget now). I have sent 2 others to them from this site. if you email me I will tell you whom i worked with and he will likely hook you up. you may (as I did) work it all out over the phone and online. I may have done it at 500 under and i was happy with that price, but I think it was about 800 under - for what it's worth. my price was 28.7, out the door, w/tax, tags (2 years), lic, fees, dest, everything.

    it was simple and smooth.

if you email me i will give you teh dealers name.
