I recently drove the MDX and Pilot 06.
-Pilot feels larger both inside and out.
-Pilot has a better 3rd row seat, larger and easy to get in and out. Pilot has a sliding 2nd row which leaves even more space for the 3rd row occupents.
-Pilot felt more stronger/safer to me(?)
-Pilot will remain the same for the next 2 years. An all-new MDX is due next year (?).
MDX has a more car like ride.
Paid $30,400 ($535 under invoice, not including $1500 dealer incentive). Also included wheel locks, door edge guards, rear splash guards, and fenderwell trim (accessories which I valued at $180-200). By my calculations, I paid about $750 over true invoice including the dealer incentive).
Also, does anyone know what the dealer invoice is on this vehicle? I was told $32,408 but am not sure that is correct.
Thank you in advance.
However, my boss, an Acura man, while test driving an RL this weekend was talking to his buddy the Acura salesman and mentioned his employee was looking for a 05 Pilot. The salesman said their sister store (Honda), as well as all Honda dealers, were having a real hard time getting rid of the 05 inventories. He thought that the incentives were going to have to increase to make room for the 06's arriving daily.
I know the above is Hear-Say, but does anyone have thoughts on waiting another month for better 05 deals? Could the Marketing support increase again? Or should I be happy with the $1500 and take it and run? Anyone with thoughts would be helpful.
Talk to you again soon.
I'm also not sure you'll find that an awful lot is left at this point. One dealer we contacted had none, another had about 4 or 5, and another had a few. Seems like red was the prevalent color out of these. No blues to be had in the whole state. So pickins are pretty slim right now. that, of course, will vary by location. Those central states seem to have a tougher time getting rid of them.

I've been patient to this point and have been rewarded with another $500 discount. I guess I'll have to put out the feelers and see how desperate the dealers are.
Bad thing about buying a Honda in Wisconsin, other than Milwaukee is the dealers think you are buying a collector car. They have just a few on the lot, and wait for someone to roll in and pay the premium.
We may just buy a 05 Explorer with the same equipment and more towing capacity for around $5000 under invoice if they keep messing with me. I have not had problem 1 with my F150 over the past 3 years, so the Explorer can't be bad either. :P
I am leaning towards the 4runner that is around invoice for an 06.

Ever since the Pilot first came out, many folks on both the east and west coast found they could get a much better deal by going to places like Ohio. Maybe one day those dealers in the central states will learn not to order so many.

Also once the 05s are gone, Honda will have to incentivize to clean out some 06 inventory by end of December to help their books.
Thanks
MSRP was 34.4 and carsdirect was showing 30.5 after all incentives at that time.
Went to the dealer and they had exactly the color my wife wanted ... they had total of 7-8 05 Pilots left, only 3 EX-L RES, so we decided to go for it. Traded in 2000 Chevy Venture, good shape, KBB trade-in value was $5.2K and we agreed on $25.3K in addition to that, so we got that $30.5 more or less (plus 5% MA tax on the $25.3K + $140 fees)
Now carsdirect shows $29.7K for that model ... but 05 inventory seems to be gone, at least in North-East.

P.S. Got 18.07 MPG on first tank...
Thanks

I feel real good about paying a good price. Dealer Sales Manager complimented me on out negotiating his best salesman and stated "most holdback we've ever given up to get a sale". While I do buy that, they kept mum about any end of month bonuses they were approaching, which I am guessing made them make the deal. Anyway, said he didn't want to hassle, but would sell me any warranty for $50 over the minimum. I bit on a 6yr/100k. This was one weakness, I did not know enough about warranty prices. I took his price on faith, probably overpaid, but is was $1,350 or so (can't remember now). LET ME KNOW IF THAT WAS A FAIR PRICE IF YOU KNOW!!!!
I found most St. Louis dealers not willing to give aggressive bids (but one was VERY aggressive). My search included everyone within 140 miles of home and a couple dealers in Chicago. Here are the various prices I was quoted (all OTD (no sales tax, fees vary between $50-$90)); (Color 1st choice Sage Brush Pearl (SBP), 2nd Silver.)
St. Louis #1 - Silver - $27,389
Chicago #1 - SBP - $27,420
St. Louis Area #1 - Silver - $27,789
St. Louis Area #2 - Silver - $27,899
St. Louis Area #3 - SBP - $28,056
St. Louis Area #4 - SBP - $28,153
St. Louis #2 - Silver - $28,168 (+$500 for SBP)
St. Louis #3 - SBP - $28,378
St. Louis Area #5 - SBP - $28,639
Note about St. Louis Area #5: He specifically stated I got a car straight from the factory, no mats, no stripe, no mud guards. I laughed and told him every other dealer included those and he wasn't even in the ball park anyway.
Basically, anyone will give you the $1500 marking support. Getting beyond that was tough. Luckily I had 2 dealers bidding agressively against each other. I got St. Louis Area #4 to match the $27,389 with the color I wanted. St. Louis #1 countered with $27,289, but I told him the games were over (St. Louis Area #4 already told me $27,389 was FINAL and I really wanted the SBP!) Had to drive a couple hours, but it was worth it! Love the color! Wife Happy!
Financed it all with Honda: 4.85% for 60 months (solid, not spectacular credit)
You should ask your dealer to adjust the price. If he doesn't agree, you can cancel the warranty, get full refund and go somewhere else. But remember, under new warranty guildlines from honda, for your vehicle to qualify for new automobile warranty, it should not have more than 6000 miles on it. Funny that there's no way to check this if you buy warranty on the internet
Good luck!">
I believe luxuries don't come incomplete. I think premium doesn't have a CD changer, memories for different drivers etc. For this much money, I should expect such things. Something i liked in MDX is side curtain airbags that you don't get in pilot 05.
The difference is $5000 upfront and $1000 for 5 year cost of ownership. Also for my drive, appox $450 annually for premium gas requirement.
But at the end, its you who should evaluate all the options as you'll be driving this for a long time and should buy something that can keep you happy.
I eventually bought a pilot EXL with Navigation for $29,200+tax etc and lifetime inspection sticker.
Thanks!
June-Sept: I spent researching cars (Pilot a lot), test drove, etc and read anything I could get my hands on about buying a new car. Waiting for the best time to pounce on a new Pilot as my 1990 Jeep Cherokee was given a 6 month death sentence.
Sept 24 Applied for credit through Capital One.
Sept 26 Called Capital One to find out why no response. Said they had no record of my application. Re applied, Instant Approval (5.75%, 60 months).
Sept 27 Blank Check delivered, I attempted to contact 15 dealers for quotes. 9 responses as noted on previous email.
Sept 28 Called the leading dealer to verify car, amount, non-demo, etc. Called all other dealers that to let them know they had been beat. A couple wanted to match the offer with preferred color and I of course let them. We picked up the car that night and went with Honda Financing (Instant Approval @ 4.85%, 60 months, $0 down, Sales Tax owed in cash in Missouri)
When I asked the sales manager why he came down so far, said he really wanted to steal a sale from St. Louis and that he wasn't approaching a bonus or target. The salesperson said he was (individually) trying to make his 15 cars, though. The sales manager ended up taking me for $499 on the warranty which I found out this morning. I called and told him that I wanted it reduced. He said he couldn't as all the paperwork was already mailed. I told him I would exercise the 60 day window to cancel to get the money back and he said "OK".
It was really a good experience and most the dealers where very easy to work with. I almost felt bad that I had to turn some of them down. I don't fault the dealer for getting more out of me on the warranty, that is their job. I should have done my homework in the beginning on warranties. Anyway, all's well that ends well.
Thanks to the board for helping a lot with pricing of these cars. I went in hoping for $28,000 out the door, realistically. Ecstatic with what I ended up with $27,389 and first color choice.
My only advice is this: Never, ever, name your price! Make them give you a number, they will.
