Requesting everyone's thoughts on the following "deal" which I believe sounds a bit high. I am in Maryland.

We will be turning in a 2013 highlander limited with 34k miles. Residual on that is 24034. I am considering purchasing it and selling it because even though I'd have to pay taxes on it they're selling for 30k+ around here. The dealer is saying they will only give me 24920 for the highlander.

Please let me know your thoughts as the below is a jumping off point and there are plenty of other dealers that I plan on shopping.

I think we need to separate the two deals.

First, Maryland is one of a few states that taxes the entire selling price of the vehicle on a lease. Now, if there is a trade in involved, I don't know if you would pay tax only on the difference between the selling price of the Sienna and the trade in value of the Highlander. You could probably check the state department of revenue website for MD to confirm.

Second, you want to get a better handle on the trade in value - lots of websites will give you numbers, or you can check out the "Real World Trade in Values" discussion here at Edmunds. Folks there have access to auction data (just like the dealer) and will give you a pretty good feel for what the trade value is. Then, get the payoff value from TFS so you know how much positive or negative equity you have in the trade.

If there is positive equity, we do not recommend using it as down payment on the lease - if the car is stolen or totaled, you lose that money.

The breakdown on sales tax is in my first post. They did only tax the difference on the trade and new sienna.
$31,087 price - $24,920.63 (trade value) = $6,166.37 (Taxable Total) so + $369.98 (6% MD State Sales Tax) + $291 (Estimated Tag Fees)
Regarding the trade I had a look at trade values on the kelly blue book site and actually mentioned that to the dealer. Their response was:
"We looked to see what off lease vehicles like yours have sold for at the local auctions over the past 3 months with your miles, and they are being bought for $24,000-$24,500.KBB and Edmunds can put whatever they want as their trade value, but they won't write a check for it. The only number that really matters is what someone is willing to pay for it. That is the number I am using."

The values I saw on KBB are below. The residual on the trade in is 24034 which leaves a fair amount of equity...
Excellent 28755-residual=4721
VG=28400-residual=4366
Good=27700-residual=3666

So, to recap. The highlander trade in could be bought for 24034+tax. They only want to give us 24920 for it despite it being worth considerably more.

What would be your recommendation?

Also, based on this information do you think the dealing is being forthright?

And finally, do the prices look OK or a bit on the high side?

I agree that the dealer buys cars, not the books or websites. If possible, I would take your Highlander to a CarMax for a second opinion on the trade value. Or, another Toyota dealer. And, I would recommend you post in the "Real World Trade in Values" discussion as well.

I did that earlier this year - CarMax offered me $12,500 but the dealer only offered $10,500. Told them about the CarMax offer and they bumped their offer to match.

Newbie here. We leased a 2015 sienna le, msrp of 32,8xx in late November. We are in the SF-Bay Area. Price of vehicle was 27991. We did a no down lease, 3 year, 12k miles. There were 1000 in rebates, which included the 500 bonus cash for Black Friday. The adjusted cap cost was 28,369. This included the first monthly payment of 290, the 650 acquisition feein addition to registration, doc, the dmv fee, and a tax on the cap cost reduction. These fees and taxes totaled over 400. Residual is 18739.

The payment with taxes is 290, or 267 without the sales tax rate of 8.5%. The manager was pretty rude during the transaction. I think mf was .00001. That is what edmunds lease calculator indicates, but wife insists that mf was only .0001. Our fico was over 750.

Any thoughts? I had the information from this site, so there is nobody to fault, if we got the wrong MF.

Looks like a really good deal. The MF is .00001, but even if it had one less ZERO, the difference is only a few dollars per month.

.00001 MF and 64%/55% residual for either model. $1000 lease cash. (might be more, where you live).

If I subtract the $1250 lease cash from the price, and roll everything else in:

$397/mo. for 36 months
$462/mo for 24 months

With $0 due at signing.

Not sure specifically, but generally

Tier 1 adds .00010
Tier 2 adds .00055

to the Tier 1+ rates.

$37.1k is the initial cap
Deduct $1.7k in cap reduction
Deduct $1k rebate
Add $650 acquisition (capitalized)
To get roughly $35k cap cost

$175 in license and reg
$450 in conveyance

Frankly, am having a bit of difficulty getting to that $3k.

Ah, with a cap cost of $35K I get $401/mo.

Make the dealer break out the full $3000 ... it's a good place for them to hide extra fees.

Am getting the details, but I now believe the $3k is $1.7k in cap reduction, $450 in conveyance, $175 in reg/title, 1st month payment, and taxes. There is a $50 - $75 gap, but if those are the rough numbers, is this a reasonable deal?

Looks solid - only way to improve on it is to lower the selling price
