I'm new to this forum and have enjoyed reading all the different posts across all the different threads. But there is so much information here, that I'm even more confused now as to what to do. So I'll just put everything down with questions and hope that you guys will come through and help this newbie out!

I'm looking to buy my first BMW -- I want a new 330ci convertible in orient metallic blue. I understand MSRP is $44,600 and invoice is $40,745. Options are options so not much leeway there (about another $4,000 in options).

    Now my questions are:

    1. I want a new car but is that an 05 model or are we going to 06 soon?

    2. Also, from what I've read here, it appears that BMW is redesigning the 3 series. Do you know when the convertible is being redesigned? If it's soon, should I wait?

    3. What would be a good price to pay for this car? A friend suggested $42,500 but I don't want to walk into a dealership without something to back me up. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, by the way.

    4. Would ED be a better option for me to get the exact car I want? While ED would be cheaper, I figure that going over there and spending a few days or a week would cost me the amount of savings! So it's not totally worth it. But I may be wrong.

Anyway, please help me in any way you can. Thanks a lot in advance!
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,338
    1) '06 convertibles won't be out until Fall..

    2) Probably at least the '07 model year for a new body style convertible.. No reason to wait.

    3) Discounts on convertibles are a little harder to come by.. $2000 off MSRP is a pretty good deal... Options are marked up, just like the base price, so the higher the MSRP, the bigger the discount (theoretically).

    4) ED should be at least $3K cheaper... You can probably still save a couple of thousand after expenses, if you concentrate on that, rather than taking a vacation...but, you have to decide if that is worth the time and trouble..

    Two questions:

    1. Please define "ED".

    2. I have a 94 325 four door sedan in really good shape-- I know I can price this on Edmunds but what is the best way to handle a trade-in with a BMW dealer?

    Thank you

Your BMW dealer will not want this car... You will realize thousands more selling this car on your own..

BMW specific forums have classified ad sections.. Many of them for free.. Google "BMW forums" and you'll see many to pick from.

    $1300 over (invoice minus incentive).

A good deal.. if you are happy with the car...

Are power seats standard on the 330i? If so, I like the equipment.. but, if they aren't, I'd try to find one with the premium package....

The proposed deal is this: 330Ci with 6 speed manual, premium pkg, sport pkg, cold weather pkg, and blk metallic; MSRP $42020, Selling Price $40000. For a 3yr/36K mile lease he quoted $500/mo (no tax incl). At a MF of 0.0008 and Residual of 60%, I calculate a lease payment of $463 (no tax incl). What am I missing? kyfdx, any insight? Thanks.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,338
What amount due at signing? He might be rolling in the $625 acquisition fee into the payment.. That would raise it to about $484/mo..

$500 is a nice round number.. maybe he plans on bumping the money factor to whatever gets him under that number... Did he say those were the numbers, or are you just assuming he is using them?

Or, possibly waiving the security deposit and acquisition fee? That would bump the MF to .00125

And, would put it around $495/mo. (I don't recommend doing either of those).

I think the key would be a break-down of your upfront charges...

Personally I think they are playing with the MF, but I didn't have a chance to verify at the time. I saw him playing around on the computer screen and he commented on the security deposit ($500), acq fee ($625), and a doc fee of $100 they charge at the dealership. I even commented that I would pay the tax upfront rather than rolling it into or paying it every month. It wasn't until later on when I ran through the calculation that I discovered the discrepancy. Before going back and questioning the salesman I wnated to make sure I wasn't off base. Thanks.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,338
Rolling in $725 to the cap cost brings it up to $487... So, not far off..

I always recommend rolling everything into the cap cost that you can.. including taxes..

For example.. lets say taxes are $1200 for the lease term... If you total the car after 2 months, GAP insurance will cover the payoff, but you won't get any of that tax money back.. I like to keep it to 1st payment and security deposit.. I'll even roll in registration fees if they'll let me.. That money factor equates to less than 2% interest...

One time, I leased.. I didn't even make the first payment.. Rolled that in also.. only made 35 payments on a 36 month lease..

    Good luck,

thanks for the info! that really helps... I've been talking to a dealer about an '05 330ci convertible in orient metallic blue, sand leather interior, blue top, with SMG, sport package, xenon headlights, park distance control and floor mats. He's asking about $1500 over invoice plus taxes and dest. That would put the car around $46,000 and change. What do you think of this deal? Thanks again!

Dealer called tonight and said that they would lease a 2005 325xi, msrp of $38,945, 3years/45,000 miles total, 0 down (no out of pocket money) for $488 which includes tax. Does this seem like a good deal? Supposively the selling price is $34,900.

    1) That would be an incredible selling price.. especially since the invoice would be $35,710..

    2) Assuming that is the price, I get $440/mo.+tax, rolling in the acquisition fee and bumping up the money factor for no security deposit.. due at signing would be first payment and license title fees.

If you asked me what a good lease price would be, I would have assumed a selling price of $36,500, MF of .00125 and residual of 58%

    Payment $479/mo PLUS tax

due at signing 1st payment, SECURITY DEPOSIT, title and licensing fees...

So, yes.. If you can get $488/mo. including tax with nothing out of pocket but your first payment, 3yr/45K.. then, that is a good deal, no matter how they arrive at the numbers..

    Hi,

I am new to the forum. I was wondering if anyone can give any feedback on this deal:

2005 330Cci to be ordered with

sport pkg, heated seats, xenons, 18" wheels, metallic paint, aftermarket window tinting (to decrease heat), mats and destination.

MSRP 48870; lease at 647.81 month for 36 mos at 10K miles/yr. Negotiated price at 47000; invoice at 44695. Residual at 64% (31276.80) and lease rate of 4.32%.

    Total due at signing: 647.81

769.53 1st yr registration in AZ

                          187.50 tax, title, documentation etc

                         total=1604.84

Sorry for the rambling text. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, mdkrp

I get $584 + tax, with only first payment at security deposit at signing.. Base money factor is .0015.. Looks like they are using .0018..

Are you having security deposit waived? Or the acquisition fee? If not, they are marking up the money factor.

Don't know your tax rate, so hard to tell exactly, if your payment is tax included..

The selling price looks okay for a convertible.

It looks like you are waiving your security deposit, and maybe your acquisition fee.. This is never a good idea..

I added the $625 acquisition fee on to your selling price to get a cap cost, and used .0015 for the money factor.. to come up with that $584 + tax figure... All you would have to add is a security deposit to your due at signing... I'm not sure of your tax rate... Add tax to $584.. if it comes up close to your number, then you are okay...

    kyfdx,

I am a repeat BMWFS customer so they waive the security deposit; he did not mention an aquisition fee so I did not ask; the MF is 0.0018 (I was not aware I could have pushed for 0.0015); the 647.81 is inclusive of state and local city tax in Tucson (tax is 7.6%).

    Thanks,

    mdkrp
  • cartalkcartalk Member Posts: 147
And there is only one dealer in Tucson so this may affect any negotiations.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,338
I just can't get the numbers to come out just right... It seems off by about $500 somewhere... If they are waiving the acq.fee, that would account for the .0018 money factor, but then I end up about $15/mo. lower than your amount..

If the acquisition fee is added into the cap cost and they are bumping up the money factor, I end up about $8/mo higher than your payment..

But, I am assuming tax is figured on the payment, and there may be some other means of figuring it in Arizona... Or the tax on leases may be higher?

So, you aren't far off.. and $1900 off MSRP seems to be a decent deal for a convertible..

I'm betting your guy's numbers are on the money.. and the tax is higher than we think.. You might ask him though.. If he is waiving the acquisition fee (which bumps up the MF by .0003), you will save money by adding it to the cap cost, and using the .0015 money factor.

Was browsing at a BMW dealer (Chicago Area) looking at the Convertible and the salesperson told me that after the Chicago Auto and during the month of April he expects the MF on the car to go up to .00225 rather than the current .0015 (3year 12k lease) Due to the weather getting better and the demand for the car.

Is he speaking the truth? Do MF's fluctuate with demand?

    Thanks

    All,

I'm considering a jet black 2005 330 CIC convertible wiht sports package, heated seats, xenon lights, integrated garage door opener. Should I ask for $46600? CarsDirect.com says the invoice is $45300, target price is $46600, and MSRP is $48,670. A few posts above someone got 47K for same car but with 18" wheels (which must cost a lot), so I think 46.6 is reasonable? It should be about $50800 after tax/title/license.

    Hello all

I wanted the opinion of the members of the forum on how many miles they would accept on the odometer of a new car purchase. I think I have a car being transferred from an out of state dealer to a local BMW dealer. He says its being loaded on a truck (yesterday or today) and will call me with an arrival date. I'm getting nervous about this specific car because I've asked several times how many miles are on the car and he keeps telling me he's checking on it. I got the impression this car has been on the other dealers lot for several months. I'm afraid that since I had to give a deposit and it is being shipped, the car will show up with mileage and they'll try to get me to buy the car or say I owe them for transportation and transfer costs. I worked this deal over the phone and have never set foot on thier lot so I don't know their reputation. This is a 2 part question. Is it that difficult for the local dealer to confirm the mileage on this new, out of state car? Second, when I buy a new car I like to see about 3 miles on the odometer. When I test drove an Audi over the past weekend the sales person said "drive it like you own it." How many miles on a new car will people in the forum typically accept before taking a pass on a specific car? Thanks for the input. If anyone is wondering I do usually take it easy on a new car during the break in period.
  • benderofbowsbenderofbows Member Posts: 542
From what I understand, these days there isn't really a break in period. Engine manufacturing technology presently allows for very precise tolerances from the factory and some manufacturers even run them a bit at the factory.

More important than the initial break in period is to not run the car hard while the engine is warming up.

I would ask for a discount with anything over 200 miles on the odo, and would definately be getting upset at over 300. You would think if they can call the other dealer and make the agreement to transfer the car, they could get the mileage.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,338
Unless the salesperson has a crystal ball, he can't know for sure...

But, last year, the money factor really jumped effective April 1st.. It changed the payment by $70-$90/month over the March numbers..

All incentives can fluctuate with demand.. The only thing you can be sure of, is what they are this month..

    325CIC and 330CIC Convertibles for a $ year 12K/year lease?

    kyfdx,

I would greatly appreciate appreciate your opinion.

I spoke with the Autobahn dealer in Fort Worth and our car is scheduled to arrive next weekend. He is offering to split the $2,500 incentive 50-50.

This would bring the price 325i sedan ($36,195 MSRP) to $32,500 or $34,793.22 drive-out . This is a discount of $3,695 off invoice with no additional MACO or training fee.

Should I push for more of the $2,500 incentive or should I take this deal and RUN?

Take care and thanks for all of your contributions to this board.

The four year lease numbers are worse than the three year.... The four year leases all use the standard rates... This applies to all BMW models at this time...

I wish I could tell you something definitive.. but, this is a hard call.. I think I remember from one of your earlier posts that you thought your dealer would pass any incentives along.. Now, it seems they only want to give half..

They aren't obligated to share any of it, I suppose... I think you have to tread gently here... You don't want to lose a deal that is $1250 less than what you were willing to pay a couple of months ago, especially considering you ordered a car to your specifications... But, there is nothing wrong with asking for more of the incentive..

You might gently remind them of their promise.. and maybe even hint that you just want another $500 off... Only you can decide what will work for you..

If you aren't comfortable doing that, just consider yourself $1250 ahead.. You'll enjoy the car just as much, either way...

I basically agree with Kyfdx. That being said it looks like your about 1770 over adjusted invoice.Id like to see you get 1k over. Meaning you would get the $2500.00 incentive thats available this month. The Dallas market is a difficult one,but Ive seen the 1k over adjusted invoice advertised. But as Kyfdx mentioned finding the exact vehicle that you build would probably be impossible.

Now that the (3.0) is out of the bag so to speak on the '06 325i i would not be surprised to see bigger incentives in March. Then again pricing has not been released. It seems Audi reneged on the promise of only 1/2% increase on the A4 and went up about $1500.00 on the base turbo model.

Dealer is offering $2000 discount off of MSRP (which is about $2000 over invoice). Sounds pretty good, but I wonder if there's more room? And I haven't seen or felt the Alcantara interior so I'm concerned about buying sight unseen. It's gotten down to this one or the TL 6 speed MT. kyfdx, any comments? Thanks.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,338
I'd be looking for about $1000 less.. All of the ZHPs I've seen have leather, so I can't comment on the alcantara..

Although I like the coupe a little better.. I don't think I'd pay $4000 more for it than the sedan.. The sedan has the $3800 incentive.. If you are leasing, not as big a difference, as the coupe has leasing incentives....

Tough choice between the TL and the 330.. Not too much difference in price if leasing, and you can do an easy $6000 off MSRP on the 330i sedan, making it competitve on price with the TL.. But, if you are buying.. the 330Ci is a lot more money... free scheduled maintenance, though...
