We (the buyers) get caught up too much in that $200 - on a $20k, $40k, $60k, or $80k purchase $200 is just chump change. If you are paying cash, then you have enough bucks to afford another $200. If you are leasing or financing run the numbers and see how little the payment changes for the $200. Yet we, the buyers will try to hammer away at that $200 endlessly :-)
As in "I can drive 4 hours each way and they will sell me the car $200 cheaper, why won't the dealer here do that?"

$23,700 for the SE and $22,000 for the EX AWD/AT.

Hmm, lets do the math ... figure 4 hours there and another hour at the store, then figure 4 hours back, maybe 425ish miles ... let's say $50/$60 bucks in gas, another $25 bucks in a lunch and a few ice tea's and a couple of Snicker bars along the way .. so figure $75 or $80 bucks for 9 hours of time and expense - so you might save $80 to $120, maybe .? ..... most folks wouldn't drive 8 hours unless it was a funeral, a wedding or a weekend outing .l.o.l..
Dennis, you have this "worms eye view" of the auto business ... every dealer is different because every dealer sits in a different position as far as inventory, or his potential to get more product and what his profit margin was on the last 10/15 vehicles and how much he dumped in that last trade, there is no "static figure" ..... just because the dealer sold an ABC for $200 less, doesn't mean he can sell the next 50 for less ...
Shopping is a great thing for every product, but because the dealer in Richmond can't meet or beat the price in Charlotte doesn't make him a bad dealer, maybe he just saved the guy before you $500 - it just wasn't you.! ... you keep using a static figure as your base point, it just doesn't work that way my friend.
Terry.
The point of my message, which you completely missed is that "We buyers get too hung up trying to save $200". And when I posted "I can drive 4 hours each way and they will sell me the car $200 cheaper why won't the dealer here do that?" that was a in fun poke at folks trying to squeeze the last nickel out of the deal.
It is OK to disagree with me, I don't mind - but at least read the WHOLE message and the context before jumping my case (again).
Thanks
Dennis
Honda CR-V SE - $24,450 (about $1100 off MSRP) - they seem kind of scarce in CT - only seen about a half-dozen between 4 dealers.
Thanks,

I did read your message, twice and I've read quite a few of your posts, that's the issue .....
I think your trying to help folks in a sincere way, but you have this "worm eye's" view of the industry and this causes you to post info that is based on one or two experiences, it's inaccurate and it's not the real world ...
You've posted things like CRV's are being sold for a loss, the reality is, dealers have less than a 22 day supply and then it's over - this makes it very hard for somebody reading your post and when they can't even get close to the price (read the responses) .. you post things like S2000's can be bought for invoice or less, the question is where.? (and I'm not talking about the one dealer out of 200) it's summer and there not distressed merchandise - if they were, dealers wouldn't be paying the $25/$26 range at the auctions and selling them for $28/$29 three days later ... you post how lease contracts can be changed, altered or sold - they can't, unless they own the vehicle pay the taxes and
"flip" the title .....
Again, I think your sincere, but remember some folks in Milwaukee or Miami might be running around from store to store because you posted something that is a faaaar stretch -- you just need to be much more clear ... and no, this isn't a disagreement - lets just say it's a moment of "heightened awareness" for you .................................
Terry.
Thanks

The installation does require bumper removal. Check out the site sponsor HandA accessories for prices. Since you mentioned you are in CT, check out http://www.fairhondapartsforyou.com or stop by Fair Honda in Danbury, CT, walk up to the parts counter, tell John you are in internet customer (Dave sent you) and you will get the same price as on their website. Even with discount the fog lights are over $200. You may stop by your local AutoZone or PepBoys and buy a generic fog light, then get the OEM switch from Fair Honda and do your own fog lights for under $50.
done at $23,607 plus tax, lic. and doc fee of $359.

One of my friend recently bought a SE along with the HC package for $800. He was told by the salesperson that if he doesn't use the HC warranty for any work, he will get the full $800 refunded back to him at the end of the warranty. I'm not a believer in that so I searched around and found no information that mentioned about the refund.
Does anyone here know whether this is true or not? If so, please point me to the link. I'm looking into buying a SE so thinking maybe if it's $800 then it seems like a reasonable price.
Thanks in advance.
I did some looking around for a week before getting my CRV-LX at the end of last month from a dealer in Queens.
Lease length and mileage?
I am generally against leases. They give no financial benefit to financing, other than lowering payments. However, the total cost of lasing vs. buying is higher for leasing.
Example:
Lease: $350/month for 40 months +$1000 down = $15,000 and no equity at turn-in. If you drive more than 40,000 miles, you will have to pay for the miles.
Finance: $360/month for 40 months = $14,400 and you owe $7200 on the 60 month contract. A 4 year old CR-V with 40,000 miles will probably be worth $12,000-$15,000 (trade-in--retail). Subtract the amount owed and you have an instant downpayment ($4800 -- $7800) for the next vehicle.
Just be aware that I was able to get 2005 CR-V EX manual for $360/month for 60 months through AHFC at 2.9%, no money down. For $10 more a month I will own the car at the end.
Are they good price?Which one I should take?Thank you all.
$360 a month for 60 months @ 2.9%, no money down = $20,084.48.
Assuming a tax rate of 6.5% and title fees of $300, in order to get to the OTD price of $20,084.48, the vehicle purchase price is something like $2,800 below invoice; is it possible you got this awesome deal, or there's something wrong in my calculation?
$22,367
My specific question for those in the know pertains to the standard fees associated with buying a new car. If someone tell me if I'm wrong or omitting something important I should know about prior to negotiations, I would appreciate it.
I understand that I will have to pay for TTL (Does this mean tax, title, and license?) for the new car. Sales tax in MI, where I'll buy the car, is 6%. Easy. Title should be a fixed fee, correct? About $50? Do I pay that to the dealer or the Secretary of State (MI version of the DMV)? What is the license? Is this the same as registering the car? And who do I pay that to?
Are there other fees? Are there any other fees that I can take care of myself and not let the dealer take care of to save on costs? I know I should look out for "dealer" or "document" fees that are arbitrary and they just tack on...What is a legitimate amount to pay for "dealer fees", if they're legitimate at all?
If someone could clearly and concisely lay this all out, with approximate appropriate fee amounts, it would be a great help to me and anyone else who is in the market for a new car for the first time.
Also, is it better to negotiate JUST the sale price of the car, or to negotiate everything at once?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Jon
I am looking for EX. If you get good quotes from some dealers. Please share.
I just bought a 2005 CRV-SE. I added a lot of accessories through the dealer so I really cannot give you a comparison price for the basic SE.
Go online to Consumer Reports and sign up for a vehicle info kit. It will give you the MSRP, Invoice and any Dealer holdbacks. It will give you the base price for negotiating.
CR says you should get the vehicle for between 4-8% over the bottom line price, depending the demand for the vehicle. Since the CRV has had a good rating, many people want it and they are not giving them away. I figured I got mine for about 5.5% over the dealer's cost.
They will try to hit you with documentation fees, which in my case, was the work they do getting my vehicle registered (title & registration/plates(tags).) They wanted $200 for mine but I made it part of the deal.
I am from Mass. where we pay 5% sales tax. The dealer handled it but it was not included in my negotiated price. Of course the lower the negotiated price, the lower the tax. I will eventually receive an excise tax bill from my Town's tax collector.
Hope this helps.
A simple way to find a deal, perhaps, is just go to carsdirect.com and put in your ZIP code. If a local to you dealer is willing to deal low and has associated themselves with carsdirect you will get a low, no haggle price. You will also see what invoice is. Buying a CR-V for around invoice including destination and dealer fees would be a good price.
When you contact a dealer for a quote be sure to get one that includes the truck, the destination fee, and any "dealer" or "doc" fees. All the other stuff - title fee, tax, tags, etc should be the same from any dealer for your state. Since they are all the same, then the price of the truck (including destination and dealer fees) is the only thing you have to negotiate. You CHECK the other things at signing to be sure they are the correct amounts, but no reason haggle on them.
Someone on the Accord forum had a couple of dealers "forget" to include the dealer doc fee in their Internet quotes they just got. So they went to buy the car and the dealer added it onto the price they gave. They asked is the price included these fees BEFORE they went to the dealer, but once they got there it was "oh, we forgot to include that".
Since you say you are in MI, perhaps someone in the area can step up with a dealer recommendation for you?
Dennis
$23,825, destination included
$150 doc fee
6% tax in MI.
Not too shabby. M&M Motor Mall in Kalamazoo. I'm going in there to close the deal in a couple of hours. If they change their tune, I'll be sure to let you all know. Otherwise, it's been a pleasure working with them. I sent emails out to multiple dealerships, and received quotes from $24,312 to $23,825. No haggling necessary. I called the second lowest dealer to see if he could beat the lowest price, he said he couldn't, so I called up the lowest (M&M) and set the machine in motion. I should pick up later today. I figured I would be nickel and diming trying to get lower than invoice.
Best of luck to you all - These forums helped me IMMENSELY during my search. Thank you.
Jon
Thanks in advance, all of your posts have been very helpful in my car search.

Anyone has good other recommendation for low apr? Thanks.
Anyone has good other recommendation for low apr? Thanks.
What length are you looking at?
You can monitor Current offers from Honda. There is nothing right now. The last week of March Honda had 2.9% APR on CR-V for 60 months. Honda does not have tiers, you either qualify, or not. Generally, you have to have FICO of 700+ and fairly good Income/Debt ratio to qualify.
You can checkSpecial offers for Certified Used Hondas here
I am thinking to refinance next week through my credit union who said they could finance me at less than 7.8% on the balance $9,000 still owed. I guess I should have checked with my credit union before going to the dealership to finance the CRV. Any thoughts if the dealer will penalize me for refinancing less than 2 months after financing through American Honda Finance? I feel the F&I guy could have given me a better rate, since I was putting down 35% of the OTD price.
Also, I am a recent graduate (which I forgot to mention). Does Honda Finance offer any rebate? Any chance the dealer might offer me some rebate if I call and tell him I am refinancing through my credit union next week?
Any input will be appreciated. This is my first car purchase and this forum has been incredibly helpful. Thanks everyone!
"Special offers for Certified Used Hondas". I don't undestand the certified used honda(2000-2006). I want to buy a new 2005 Honda. Am I still qualified for the 4.49%.Thanks
Thanks!
Bought on 3/31/05 in AZ
The Honda "Clearance Event" starts soon, I ASSUME the promos will be back then.
Honda normally does not have much trouble selling CR-Vs so they tend to not has a much in the way of discount financing or dealer money. The Accord on the other hand, has had dealer money almost all year.
I would just check with your dealer and/or keep checking the Hondacars.com current offers page and hopefully cheap money will return.

Honda does have "recent graduate program," the program is aimed at helping graduates building credit. Rather than give dollars off, Honda guarantees the lowest advertized rate on a particular car even if you have no credit history, as long as you don't have negatives (late payments, non-payments, defaults, repos). So, no, there are no rebates.
I don't know what kind of credit you have, but 7.8% is kind of high for 36 months. I would suspect that dealer padded the interest rate, since Honda, unlike others, does not have tiers. You either qualify or not. Since you say you finance through Honda finance, your credit was good enough to qualify, and you should have gotten 4%-5% at the highest, if there were no other promotional rates at the time. 36 months finance contracts usually have much lower rates than 60 month contracts. Capital one offers 4.99% on 36 months loans for people with good credit. They offer REFINANCE rates at 6.19%. Check your finance contract to see if it is indeed from American Honda Finance Corporation (AHFC), and not from third party that dealer may have solicited.
As far as pre-payment penalty, you should have seen that in your finance contract. I don't have mine infront of me, but I don't remember reading anything about pre-payment penalty.
Thanks.
$23,078 (destination included) . Plus tax and
motor vehicle $125 for NY, doc fees $99.70 and tire tax of $7.50.
Accessaries: the security system for $399 and the side armrest (on back order) for $229
The dealer was very nice and didn't bother us with anything for extra cost. I guess the price will be lower when the 2006 model comes out. But I can't wait till that time.
There is no prepayment penalty (I confirmed with AHFC). I understand when the credit union pulls my report that they will see that my auto loan just started with a a balance of $13,500. Hopefully it should help to show my outstanding balance statement from AHFC I need to pay off is $8,500.
Once again thanks for your input!
