I livechatted with carsdirect.com and she told me I should add at least 11-13% more than the price on the site. I assume sales tax and other dealer fee.
and she told me they will not honor or take blank check from capital one.

anybody tried to use costco's auto program?

Hondacars.com does not have the option to look up dealer's inventory.
I was looking at DCH website in NJ and it shows inventory however PS honda in long island does not.
Any website to look up dealer's inventory? :confuse:

Just paid $18067 for a 2005 LX. Price included destination but not doc fees of $189. Haven't decided on what options I want added but I did get some fair quotes on them as well.

I am interested in buying a CRV LX AWD auto trans, and I'm in Los Angeles, CA. (Color isn't too important, as long as it's not black.) No financing, no trade-in (unless they'll take a beat-up 93 Ford Explorer.)

I'd be grateful to anyone who can offer me insight -- recommended dealers, recent prices, buying tips, caveats, etc.

According to Edmunds, invoice is $19,765, which doesn't include dealer holdback (which I assume is in the $500-$700 range, since I've seen it quoted at $775 for the EX). A couple of weeks ago local dealerships gave me initial quotes of $19,950 and $20,230, including destination fee, online. (I don't know if they intended to add a documentation fee to that.)

Is there any reason I shouldn't be able to get this vehicle for somewhere in the $19,500 - $19,800 range... plus title, tax and license?

(Although I just read that the new transportation bill approved by Congress will let hybrid vehicle owners drive solo in carpool lanes -- maybe it's time to look at the Ford Escape Hybrid again, or the Toyota Highlander.)

Incidentally, can anyone tell me why I see 2003 and 2004 CRV's, with 20 to 50 thousand miles on them, listed for close to or more than the MSRP for 2005's? Obviously you'd negotiate down, but it seems insane to even list them at these prices. Or am I missing something?

Anyway, thanks all (in advance) for your advice.

It sounds good to me. I'm in Houston and my lowest quote for the same 05 SE is $22,999. I'm probably going to buy it from another dealer for a tad more (less than $100) because I like dealing with them.

    Hello crvchick,

You indeed did a wonderful job nailing your deal, I am ready to buy a 2005 CR-V LX auto AWD, (the same as your). I am in NYC but willing to go to NJ as long as the price is right without any gimmicks. Would you mind telling me which town in south NJ the honda dealership you purchased your CRV from?

In anycase, I will launch my "attack" guided from carbuyingtips.com this week and see how it goes. Like you said, "We have to stick together against the evil spirit"

    Thanks,

A Honda dealer in Houston advertising "employee discounts."

BTW, I suspect these employee discount promotions do not significantly affect bottom-line prices, though. I shopped for GM vehicles for awhile and with many of their cars, you can get them for significantly less than the advertised employee discount. Does this promotion only help buyers who don't do their research?

Oopsy! I made a mistake. The price was $18,367 which did include the destination fee plus doc fees of $189. That seemed like a fair deal to me and I hope I did well. In any case I can hardly wait to drive my new CR-V home. I haven't had a new car in over 10 years! Hooray!

sorry if I'm repeating myself, browser issues during reply.

I see ads around Boston Honda dealerships, but they are discounts that employees from the dealerships are getting, not discounts from Honda. Sounds sneaky.

Speaking of sneaky, I set up an appointment with a dealer who was a one hour drive away to take a look at a CRV we were thinking of buying, which the dealer said we could buy. When we got there, we got handed from one salesman to another, and finally they told us that the car we were looking at was already sold, and we'd have to wait two weeks for another CRV of that color to come in. When they underpriced our trade-in by $2K, that was the final straw, and we walked.

A second dealer we met with are offering the Silvermoss EX Auto for $22k (including dest. charge), and our trade in is just $500 below KBB. We figured this was a good price, hearing how popular the silvermoss color is. What do you all think?

Neither Crysler, GM nor Ford offer true employee pricing. With some you get "supplier's" price, with Ford you get the price a dealer employee would pay, Crysler is a supplier price as well. True GM employee price is still lower than "you pay what we pay" marketing scheme. Also, the "employee pricing" only applys to 2005, 2006's are exculded as well as some hot models. There are no such restrictions on true employee pricing.

As to OP question, if all over sudden everyone stopped buying Hondas, they may offer employee pricing. Do you see that happening soon? Seems there alot of people interested in buying a Honda. So, why would they intentionally lose money?

It is all about "supply and demand." When there is demand, there will be supply. When demand slows, the supply will slow. Domestics have more supply than demand and had to come up with ways to get people to become more interested, in the "stale" product.

2 weeks ago I bought a 2005 CRV EX AWD AT Silver Moss Metallic in the Los Angeles area for $21,800 (car+ delivery fee included; tax and license extra), which is a reasonable "Honda Clearance" price. (The pre-clearance TMV was shown at about $22,760.) I had offers of about $21,300 for the same vehicle in other colors - - everybody has lots of Satin Silver that they want to unload - - but for some reason I was in love with the darker color.
Anyway, I'm new to this forum - don't know all the rules yet about ads - but if you live in LA, try the Fontana-area dealer that advertises on the radio talk shows with the no-hassle internet offers. Follow-up with a phone call, and they'll probably be about $500 less than Edmunds TMV.

Does anyone know if there is any predictability to when Honda offers special financing rates for the CR-V? I remember back in March they were offering 2.9% for all their vehicles, but I haven't seen anything else since then. I talked to a salesperson last week who said their best rate now is 4.99% for well qualified buyers and 5.49% for the "college grad program" (which I would probably use since I just graduated in May). I would like to be able to get one by October, but I could wait if I know they will have specials toward the end of the year.

Hey all! My husband and I are about to purchase an EX Automatic when we get our cash lined up..no financing.

We test drove the EX at two different dealerships last weekend..even though we knew we were not ready to buy it right then, I went through some of the negotiation process. I had my CR pricing so had "wholesale" and knew that is what I would want. I also had gotten a few internet quotes previous...

So there are 4 honda dealerships in less than 20 mile radius from my house..if I expand out to 40 miles..you can add another 4-5..so I have alot to choose from. I have a Civix Ex sedan I bought in 98 and had a good pricing experience with that.

So..here is what happened when we test drove two Ex's last weekend.

Dealer #1- old man came out of showroom looking a bit disheveled, walked us all the way to the back lot where they had quite a big selection of cars back there. When we aksed to test drive, he had to walk all the way back to get the key! Doh! We told him exactly what color and trim we wanted..he should have had the key..and it was well over 90 degrees! Not a good experience to start! SO we drove and went in the showroom and I asked him what his best price is just to see what he would offer and he walked me into his office, pulled out his dealer invoice of $22,268 and said that was his best price. I know wholesale was 21,465 so I asked if he could do any better...he said no.. I said are you sure? He said no better. We said okay and walked out. I was quite shocked that he didn't even try and offer us a few bucks..just let us walk. They must do alot of business, even with two other honda dealerships less than 10 miles in either direction down the same highway!! oh well!

    2. On the way home, we decided to stop by the agency a few miles from the house and where we get our civic serviced and we walked on the lot with only a few cars on the lot..and there was a Silver Moss EX sitting all by its lonesome on the lot. Leaving my husband by the car, I walk up to the showroom where three salesmen were leaning on a car jib jabbing and I said "which one of you bored salesman wants to sell me that EX over there for $21K? After they all laughed, one of them walked me over to the car..then he walked me to his sales manager and handed me over. He then showed me dealer invoice which I knew I didn't want and I told him an agency 15 miles down the road(not the one we just came from) gave me an email price at $21,400..can he give me $21, 300. He did.

That was as far as the negotiation went. Since we did not have the cash in hand..and wouldn't for another week..we stopped there and told him we would call when cash was in hand and hope that car was still on the lot. He said he could probably pull from another dealer.

So..if I can get it..I at least got $21,300. Now this car, if we get the exact one, had the factory installed protection package(tire, wheel locks, mud flaps, cargo tray) he said he would give us for an extra $230(he said his price was $300) I couldn't confirm this as I didn't have any option prices from CR. Not sure if this is good or not.
So..this price does not include TTL, destination or any other charges. We won't get any of the extras financing people like to stick with you..

So..given that CR showed me 21.465 for wholesale and I got him down to 21,3k..is this as good as it can get or can I do better? I won;t know if I get any factory extras until we know which car we will end up with. We are pretty set on the Silver Moss...but it is not a deal breaker..

No such thing as "factory installed" nothing on that list is installed at the factory. These are dealer add ons. Tires are standard on all cars. Wheel locks are $30. Mudflaps are $40. Cargo tray is $75. All are dealer accessories, NOT FACTORY INSTALLED!!!!! Even though he gave you a $21,300 they will charge you $300-$500 "processing fee." When was the last time you saw a secretary making $200/hour? Also, the $21,300 is called "low balling" read the "confessions of a car sales man" her eon Edmunds.

    1) You don't have anything yet... just talk.. a verbal promise.. You made a deal that you couldn't complete.

    2) Are you trading the Civic? If so, negotiations start all over again..

    3) Why do you think a dealer would sell you a car for less than his cost? Is he going to make it up on volume? .... ;)

I truly hope you get this car for $21,300, but the smart money is betting the other way..

Saw one in local newspaper from one of the local car dealer:

  • midwesttradermidwesttrader Member Posts: 291
A Honda dealer where I live was advertising the same offer. All it meant was that they were willing to sell at invoice cost. Most dealers will do so if you ask. Not a big deal at all.
  • maygoddessmaygoddess Member Posts: 12
Thanks for the info on the dealer installed stuff. I used the wrong terminology..saying factory installed..no need to shout it though, dude. He didn't say it was factory installed. I assumed it was. Also..I was not saying he was charging for tires in the "protection package..I meant tire/wheel locks..

Also..can you tell me how you know the pricing for these items.

When I bought my Civic in 98..the CR pricing report included pricing on all the extras and options so I knew what to negotiate for..this new CR report for the CR-V lists all the options, but just says standard or dealer..no pricing. So it sounds, based on your pricing above of $145..that the $230 "wholesale" price is still high.

And believe me, when I bought the Civic..I went over the extra charges with a fine tooth comb..and did not pay any extra fees above a destination charge and the TTL. He won't sneak any "processing fees" by me..or I don't get the car.

    Thanks!

Click on the advertising link at the top of the discussion....mailorder

You can figure the cost of the accessories that way... Add a reasonable amount for installation, then ask for that price..

    Hey there kfydx,

    1. You are right..he made me a deal right then..when I go back, my deal is in his computer..if he tries to change, I walk to one of the other hand full of agencies in my area. He knows it.

    2. No, my "baby" is not being traded in. The CR-V will be a replacement of my hubby's old junker of a Ford Probe. He is not sure if he will trade in or just donate it..probably worth $2..it is in bad shape!

    3. Well..the deal is on the table for the $21,300..if he wants to sell it to me..that is what I will pay.

I am not sure why you think I would not get it for the 21,3K.. can you explain
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 266,109
Why would a dealer sell below wholesale? How does he make money?

I'm thinking.... plus destination.. plus dealer/document fee.. etc, etc..

Thanks! I checked them out..yep..his "wholesale" is really full Honda retail looks like...okay...so he is attempting to make back his money..glad I walked out and had time to look around. I was not happy about not knowing accessory prices before I went in. The agency I bought the civic from did not have any add-ons to the car, nor did I buy any add-ons..so that threw me.

I am assuming these items can be easily removed if I don't want the dealer add-ons? Or would they just typically say "take it or leave it"?

I may not wind up with this car anyway with it installed..we'll see.
  • maygoddessmaygoddess Member Posts: 12
    Ahh..yeah..got it..

I am sure he will try to add stuff on..so we will see when we go back with cash in hand and ready to sign on the dotted line..what he tries to add on..he obviously already tried to "add on" by giving me his "wholesale"(yeah, right!) on the locks, flaps and cargo tray.

also..any idea about buying these items after market..the link her ein the forum to honda-accessories.com looks like great pricing..is it the real deal/ Any suggestions for purchasing these item other than this place? Never had to buy anything for my Civic..so I have no idea about buying them

    Thanks!
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 266,109
Front mudflaps.. I have them and like them... I think I paid around $79 installed..

Wheel locks.. Don't have them.. Where I live, I can't imagine anyone stealing CR-V alloys, but I guess it could happen.. I had them on a Porsche one time... always a pain trying to remember the wheel lock key, any time it was being worked on.. I have a BMW now, with $400/ea. wheels... still, no locks.. But, relatively cheap, if you want them..

Trunk tray... seems useful.... I don't have one..

You could order all of that from the Handa Accessories above... Or all except the mudflaps... and get those from the dealer since they need to be installed.. That might simplify things....

I haven't seen one except on-line, but is the Silver Moss really green?
  • maygoddessmaygoddess Member Posts: 12
No..it is NOT anywhere near green..it is just another shade of a silvery gray..I thought it was as well. I told a dealer I would love to have the same dark hunter green I got my civic in..and he said the silver moss is green..I was looking at the paint chip in my brochure and going "whahh??" no where near green. When I test drove it this past weekend..it is just a shade of grey somewhere in between Satin Silver and Pewter Pearl.

I am not thrilled with most ofthe colors and I hate black interior and the lighter beige interior..my civic interior(taupe) is better..but not a deal breaker. I liked the silver moss only because I see a million of the satin silver ones in my area and I want the car to stand out a bit more in parking lots!
  • kfranci2kfranci2 Member Posts: 31
Make sure you take a good lock at silver moss in different shades of light. I have a CR-V in silver moss and absolutely love it. You will see hints of green, it is not just silver or grey. While you're at the dealer, check out some of the silver-gray-green colors on the Odyssey and the Civic, they are all in the same color family. Then look at Graphite Pearl on the Accord ... that is a pure grey/silver ... you will see the difference. Silver Moss definitely stands out more than the silver, i couldn't be happier with it.
  • laurie_lulaurie_lu Member Posts: 5
I own the Silver Moss. It changes color depending on what lighting conditions are present. When it is dusk or cloudy, it looks dark gray. In the mornings or in bright sunlight it looks like a Metallic Light Teal Green. In my town, I haven't seen anyone else driving around in the Silver Moss. I feel like mine is unique.

teal has a bluish tint to it - I hope it's not that -I was thinking more like those plants with silvery green leaves. I am picking mine up tomorrow. Price was 20,102.00 which includes taxes - out the door - everything. I am having to drive from Bham Al to Jasper Al but it is worth here - bham dealer wante 20,900!

Hey everybody, picked up my CR-V friday. Wow, this car is great. This is what I paid in the upstate NY area. I bought it from Brewster Honda.

    22,386 (including destination)
    700 for XM radio install

They originally told me 7 percent over 5 years, so I got my own financing of 5.35. When they ran my financing, they offered me 4.69, which I gladly took. No hidden fees whatsoever. I turned down the extra warranty, they weren't pushy at all, just explained it to me. I recommend Brewster Honda, their service department seems very nice.

Great experience all around. I went from a hyundai to a honda, world of difference.
  • maygoddessmaygoddess Member Posts: 12
Very interesting about the silver moss color changing. We saw it on two different lots on a sunny day..it just looked dark grey..when I heard the term "moss" I was really thinking a true sage green myself..not something grey with a greenish tint..but because so many others drive the light silver one around here..and I am not fond of the other pewter..this is a good compromise.

We are just waiting for the last of our cash to come in and we will buy it proabbly next week..cash out the door..no financing thankfully..hate dealing with all that!

I am looking to buy a 2002 CR-V with 5 spd. manual transmission (will consider a great deal on a 2001). Here is what I have found so far and I was hoping for feedback. I also have a few follow-up questions at the end of this list.

Option 1: Private party sale of 2001 EX with 55,000 miles. Single owner, all the standard features built into the car. She is asking $13,700 but is negotiable. Kelly gives $12,205 and Edmunds $12,836 as the private party sale price. Also, the owner sounds responsible, but she has not kept all her service receipts so I have to take her at her word and trust the pre-purchase inspection.

Option 2: Private party sale of 2002 EX with 37,000 miles. Single owner and same situation as above. The owner is asking $16,700. Kelly gives $14,905 as private party sale price. I did not look up Edmunds but guess it would be slightly higher.

Option 3: A dealer that my mechanic of 15 years recommended to me has a certified pre-owned 2002 LX with 44,000 miles on it for which they are asking $15,900, although the dealer told me he would go down to $15,500 (single owner prior to dealership trade-in). Kelly values the dealer price at $15,700 but does not specify certified. Edmunds values it certified and pre-owned at $17,696.

Although it sounds like I would be paying more for option 3 than I would if I got the same car through a private party transaction, there are not that many used CR-V's out there and even fewer that are manual transmission. Plus, my mechanic swears by this dealer and I feel more secure that I would be getting a car in great condition. I don't need the car immediately, so I was thinking I would see how long it takes this one to sell. If it goes quickly, I will know that I have little leverage the next time a similar model comes into this dealer. If it's still on his lot in a couple of weeks, he might come down a little more in price. Any thoughts on how to proceed?

Does anybody have any experience purchasing a car in one state that you plan to register and insure in another? If so, I welcome any suggestions on that as well. I tried searching the DMV web sites in the states in which I am considering a purchase, but did not find any information.

Last but not least, what accounts for the difference in pricing between Kelly and Edmunds? I was thinking that I would just average the two for negotiation purposes. Interested in feedback there as well.

My dealer has a 2002 EX manual on the used lot, not sure how many miles, but it had a huge $14,500 sticker on it. I am near Buffalo, NY. The dealer is Don Davis auto.

It is very difficult to find a CR-V with manual, since only 3% were made that way. Someone on "the other board" posted that their dealer in CO had like 4 or 5 brand new 2004's manuals and a couple of 2005's.

This is my opinon, but if you are going to pay $15K for a used CR-V with manual, you might as well pay $4000-$5000 more and get a 2005 EX manual with more features, warranty, no questionable history and better finance rate.

I paid slightly under $21K for a 2005 EX manual (before price in crease in March).

Just thought some might find this interesting. I bought my CR-V at autofair honda in Manchester, NH. They have a "no dicker sticker" policy and all of their "upfront lowest prices" are listed on their website. They are the biggest dealer in the area selling 6 or 7 makes of cars (ford, toyota, etc.), all with no dicker sticker. Their price a month a ago was almost exactly the Edmunds tmv price and was in line with what most people are reporting here. 05 EX auto 4wd -- 22,400 including destination.

Here is the interesting part. I just checked their web site to see if the prices had fallen any, it being August, to find that the prices have gone up! 05 EX auto 4wd -- 23,000. They were 22,400 back in June when we first starting looking, now in August they go up? Odd.

I noticed that prices for CR-V's are the same as they were last Spring. I thought they might have fallen by now with the end of the year clearance, but that doesn't seem to be the case. With the 2006 coming out in a few months, I'm wondering if it's worth just holding off for that model. I'm getting tempted to trade in my RAV for a CR-V if I can swing a decent deal.

Last night I bought a new 2005 CRV LX AWD automatic Satin Silver from Wilsonville Honda ( the newest Honda dealer in North West ) Oregon. I paid $20080.00 and Lic / Reg fees $ 218.00, no sales tax in Oregon. I needed a security system but it was out of stock They have ordered a security system for $240.00 for me. I am very happy with the Internet Manager's dealings.Very straight forward . This is my first Honda vehicle, always bought Toyota. I think the percent of five speeds is greater than 3%. I would guess more like, maybe 10%.

They just don't sell well either new or used.

That really surprises me - I want a manual stick shift; it's all I ever use. I'd think since they're harder to find, they'd be sought-after in the resale mkt.

They are more rare and demand higher resale when you find a buyer and a person willing to sell one. But because they are so much fun, people don't sell them until much later in the vehicle's life.

Isellhondas is a dealer and will tell you this as any dealer would. When I bought my first CR-V in 2001, the dealer LIED to me telling that CR-V's with manuals did not exist. I ended up buying one with automatic, and was very unhappy with it. Luckily, someone liked it more than I and stole it. I couldn't have been happier.

If you find a dealer with a manual CR-V on the lot, you can negotiate a better deal. Just don't let them know that you like driving manuals, they will jack up the price because it is rare.
