...and it would arrive at my doorstep (well make that garagedoorstep) in about a week. Now that I could go for!
  • rorrrorr Member Posts: 3,630
Yeah, well, there's that whole pesky dealer network thingy to get around (said with tongue firmly in cheek....)
  • tamu2002tamu2002 Member Posts: 758
want to keep the info on the new model a secret? You would think by releasing more details they can persuade more people hold off buying other brands and wait for their van. Could they be concerned about sales of the current model? Or is this simply errogance.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,495
keep the dealer, add the option.

Frankly, you can pretty much do that with an merican make (especially a truck). Configure it just like you want (within reason), and they build it for you. Doesn't really happen on any Japanese car though.

But, it would be nice to get the EX-L equipment, minus the power hatch (and power doors), but with the roof.

Actually, that sounds like a new model: the LX-LR. Just take an LX, add alloys, moonroof, leather and power drivers seat, and there you go. Would sell like hotcakes, and have less problems down the road without the motorized doors and hatch.

Ha, exactly what I mentioned somewhere else a while ago. It have several advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages: Get and pay exactly for what you want; No more confusing option packages; Get approved online w/o a sales manager; etc.

Disadvantages: No more haggling price (maybe it's an advantage?); No test drives on dealers lot; and some more...

Somebody pointed out that reliability will be very bad if cars will be built that way, different for any individual.

Cars are much more complicated to build than PC's, which most people can do by themselves.

But... We can never know what else the internet will change in our life...
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,495
it's a little harder to build a car than a PC,and the number of parts is huge, plus the gov't. has lots of restrictions (safety, etc.) that limit what you can do mechanically. But, equipment wise it could work, with some caveats:

    -people like to haggle
    -Trade ins
    -financing issues
-people want test drives (how are you going to know if you want it)
    - what to do with all the bizarre configurations that people order, but decide they don't want.

Still, it would be nice to have some more flexibility. Toyota in theory does better with their myriad options packages (what, 14 for LE alone)? I say in theory since they actually only build a few of them, so you get what they decide to make, just like Honda.

Here's an Idea: They offer several trim lines. (LX, SE (LX plus a few things), EX, EX-L.) Then they offer option packages and individual options. You price out your car online, pick colors, etc.. (even choose accesories) then you pick a dealer for delivery. You get pre-approved for credit online. You confirm the order with the local Honda dealer, which gives you a call. When Honda receives your order, they build it, and ship it to the dealer you picked for delivery.

You can also order it at the dealer, and each dealer has a certain number of Spec vans, kind of like how a home builder has a few Spec Homes for sale that are in popular combinations. The Spec Vans could be the most popular options on the most popular trim line. The Spec Vans are also there to test drive. Every dealer follows a no haggle policy like Saturn. There's no year end clearance (except for the Spec Models) because every car is special ordered. This may take time, but it'll arrive at your favorite dealer just the way you want it. It's less like the Dell Computer ordering system and more like the ordering system for a new house.

There are many reasons that it won't happen for existing makers. Possible for new comers. I cite two reasons to contribute.

    - Bidding contracts between dealers and makers. Dealers have exclusive right to sell the automobiles as the sole channel (new ones) Automobile sales is heavily regulated to prevent Anti-Trust. This alone is much more complicated than selling PCs

    - Order and Build is certainly possible. I bought my BMW 540iA exactly as I wanted it by ordering (color, options). I waited for three months to get it. For another $1800 you get to match any color you want. Just provide an example (your favorite T-shirt color?). However, this works for high-end vehicle because of production slow-down. For high volume vehicles, the cost would increase significantly. Say, for $1000 more, how many would choose this "customization" option? Even that, you can't by-pass dealers. They get a small chunk of money.

maybe i'm mistaken, but isn't that what Toyota sort of promised with the Sienna - lots of neat little confusing and conflicting and unavailable option packages... that hasn't worked all that well for them has it?

personally, i like to drive the car i buy.

honda should keep the trim levels to a small number. i think fewer options actually makes the product more valuable.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
My Odyssey was "custom-ordered" I bought the cloth EX beige colored model, which was very easy to find, by the way.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Kind of... four different trims (CE, LE, XLE & XLE Limited), two different drivetrains (FWD & AWD), two seating choice (7-passenger and 8-passenger) plus 10, 15, 20 different packages and options to add-on. But it restricts to regional for these combination. It looks like a custom built but it is not. We just have several more choices. And this also takes longer than usual to build a certain models.
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
thanks, you make the point very susinctly. you left out color though. ;)

once upon a time, i think Dell *did* provide different color plastic accents on their computers (although it might have been another manufacturer), but I don't think they ever offered anywhere near the number of different combinations for the Sienna.

If this has been posted before I apologize but I have scoured many of these sites and NOT seen this pic before. Seems to fit the sightings reports. Pic posted by our very own edmunds as the 05 spy pic.

Again apologize if this has already been talked about.

I like this even better than the green pic. It is not as chisled in the front. Now . . . . . does anyone have a spy pic of the interior?
  • player4player4 Member Posts: 362

I am a 2004 Nissan Quest owner and I really
like it's funky styling but, I must say, the
Japanese version of the Odyssey is a nice
looking set of wheels. I had read, and the spy picture appears to confirm, that the US version
would be much more conservative. Why do you suppose that is? I mean Honda owners are very loyal andI bet they'd buy whichever one
came to the US market. If anything I think they'd get more Odyssey buyers with the Japanese
version. They will always get the Honda loyalists, but they might pick-up the buyers who are looking for a more daring/unique design, buyers like myself.

Anyway, just a thought. I hope all of you enjoy your new 05 Odyssey. I'm sure it'll be
    a great van.

love the front compared to the green pic
  • dannodanno Member Posts: 114
Looks like an LX - black mirrors, no roof rack, black door handles. Love the look of the headlights. The hood is bulged , maybe to accomodate that 3.8 liter engine. Looks like it has the roll down 2nd row windows but other than that the same old Ody from A pillar back.(which is OK) It looks like it has the same suspension design as the rear still looks like it sits a little lower than the front. Tires look to be changed from the Michelin Symmetry - if the mule has the same tire as production - which it should. Wipers are semi-hidden which adds to the sleek look. The side is more sculpted above the sill vs. the 2004. The whole look gives me the impression of more power and sophistication. Can't wait to see an EX in it's full press release glory!

It looks overweight and intelligent as a whale!!! Bring in the Japanese/Australian version. I believe there are many people who want slick, sporty, reasonable size minivan.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
I JUST LOVE HOW IT LOOKS!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to Honda for not messing up the Odyssey! Now all we have to see is the interior.
  • player4player4 Member Posts: 362
this pic was take Saturday June 19. on the ic right below the door hadles it says "COPYRIGHT: DOANE / PRIDDY". And also on the bottom between the two wheels it sayd "Copyright: Chris Doane for Brenda Priddy & Co.".
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,495
If this is the new model (and I can't see how it isn't), it is still the front runner for the wifes next car (before the end of the year), as long as the improve the interior.

Pretty much just drop the Accord dash and seats in there, add the moonroof, and I'll write the cehck.

I was worried that the new Odyssey would actually looks like the green van in picture! No worry now. The new Odyssey looks good, not beautiful, but good.

It looks like a bigger MPV with current Odyssey line from A-pillar backward. Too bad, we can't see the rear end. Sienna has a nice looking rear end (better than the front end, IMHO).

Good job, Honda! Now, reduce the road noise, please!
  • hwyhobohwyhobo Member Posts: 265
Wow. Am I really the only one who thinks the green version looked waay better than this cheap plasticky "Avalanched" new version? There is no grace to the new one. It looks fat and tired, like a beached whale.
  • rorrrorr Member Posts: 3,630
...that we've finally seen the end of posted links to the JDM Odyssey as the new US Odyssey? I sure hope so....
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,495
Well, if Honda didn't bolow the doors off styling wise, maybe it won't create a feeding frenzy at launch (if people see it as evolutionary). A good thing if you want to buy early!

It is a spy photo ... the exterior has been disguised with tape and plastic. It will not look like the avalanche.
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
I think it looks great, but I hope the finished version has the chrome grille.
I hope the Touring model has chrome, leather, woodtrim, moon-roof, and fog lights.

If so, it is almost too good to be true.
That front looks extremely like an Acura, better than the Sienna and anything else out there.

It looks a little bigger and longer than the current Ody IMO, which is fantastic to me.

Man, it is too good to be true. That front end (with chrome, of course) reminds me of the new '05 flagship Acura RL!

It makes perfect sense to me because Honda/Acura is going for the more rounder looks in all there cars.

Great job for finding this cbwantsan05 !!!!!!
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
Yeah, I agree. The Sienna's rear view looks much, much better than the front end.
The current Ody's rear veiw also looks great. If the front-end looks that great (with Chrome grille) like an Acura RL, I'm sure the rear end will look great too since the rear end is very easy to make look good in a minivan.
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
Yeah, I'm sure the finished product will look even better.
    Looks extremely promising to me.
It's going to look more like a luxury vehicle, especially the touring model, than a sports car, which is the way it should be IMO.

My Friends Photoshop i asked him to remove the tape from the headlamps adn grille. He also enlarged it

  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
Okay, it looks better, but still needs one piece of chrome on the bottom and the two middle chrome lines need to be bigger. But it's looking great.

If your friend can add fog lights, cross-bars and roof-rack, and 17" alloy wheels, it will look even better.

But I am extremely impressed with the Acura RL-like front end! Most impressive.

Anybody think the Ody will have row-down windows for all three rows based on thise pic?

And why not stow-away seats for both 2nd and 3rd row?

Such an impressive animal as this deserves impressive interior features.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Wow! Nice spy picture! Isn't it a test car that one poster mentioned a little while ago when he/she was on the trip road? I think he/she finally caught up with the car and took this picture. Or isn't it taken by Edmunds people?

It looks good to me. The mirrors look like those on Sienna. But come on... the sliding door track is still there. The finished product with foglights, alloy wheels, roof racks should be great.
  • aabbaabb Member Posts: 58
I think it looks dull and boring, like the old Windstar
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,495
It's a minvan. Would you rather they "Questized" it? At least boring and boxy translates into excellent interior space.

I think it looks nice and clean, and will age well.

Don't forget that bamaboy our factory spy said that the grill has no chrome. I believe he said it is body colored. Did you notice the strip that runs under the doorhandles? Maybe that will be chrome?
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
No, I recalled he said it had to woodtrim.
But how do we know he's even accurate.
I don't even recall him saying anything about a Touring w/NAV+DVD model. What do you think will be the difference between a Touring model w/NAV+RES and a EX-L model w/NAV+RES?
My guess is that the Touring model is a luxury model with woodtrim.

But I think all the models will have chrome on the grille, just like the current Odyssey.

You're not alone. The green one does look better.

Maybe it's just me or it's the dull color in the spy shot. The new Ody looks VERY yucky to me, and overall it gives a bald feeling. Maybe it'll look better in person and with a roof rack?
  • tamu2002tamu2002 Member Posts: 758
in the spy pic is conservative enough. Don't see how much more conservative it can be made for the US market. IMHO the new GM vans have a classier front facia than this new Ody, but I can't say the same about their rear ends. Too bad this spy photo doesn't show the Ody's rear.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
They probably think the test car (dull looking one) will less likely for people to recognize as a new Odyssey with the badge covered. I am sure the finished product will be a better looking one.
  • tamu2002tamu2002 Member Posts: 758
I guess it's easy to be disappointed stylingwise with any van after seeing what Nissan has done to the Quest. Well, let wait and see what the production one will look like.

Is this really a completely redesigned Ody (assuming same power train)? If it is, it might be wise to wait a months for them to iron out the early production problems.
  • tamu2002tamu2002 Member Posts: 758
the beholder. There's nothing particular on the new Ody that yells "ugly". Just personal taste. It's perfectly fine for one to like or dislike a vehicle's styling. Maybe I'll fall in love with it in person or by squinting a little harder :)
  • ash1ash1 Member Posts: 7
    Two things I noticed:
    1. It rides lower (better handling).
    2. It is much more aerodynamic (better fuel mileage.)
  • cericceric Member Posts: 1,092
could you please name one minivan that is better looking in your opinion? Also, it would probably help Honda by pointing out which part of the exterior design that bothers you the most. Maybe there is a chance that they still could change it.

To me, the new look works just like any Honda designs. It is timeless, not fancy or impressive. With some chrome pieces at the front end, it would look expensive. I especially like the new Acura RL's head lights. I plan to buy an RL this year. I also plan to replace my current '01 Odyssey with another one in '06 or '07. The new look does not disappoint me. Sienna's front end and side profile are disappointing. Quest is stylish, but out there.
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
I agree totally. I like Lexus a lot, although the ES330 looks like a Camry and costs a lot more. I like the Avalon and Camry's exterior. I like the Accord's look. I think the Sienna is pretty good. But that spy pic of the Ody looks great even though it's probably dirty with tape everywhere and it doesn't have roof-rack, cross-bars, fog lights, chrome, etc. When they add all those things to the finished product (they better), it will look even better.

I don't think it's fair to say it looks bad based on a spy pic with tape everywhere.
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
    What do you mean?
Have you driven in the new Ody?
  • ash1ash1 Member Posts: 7
Just by looking at the picture, (you can see a few things, I guess, don't have to test drive).
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
    looks good.
