How many miles did the car have when you bought it? Also, did you get them to include wheel locks and other accessories?

Yes, I agree that the price is the most important factor. I'd like to buy a TL (non-nav, auto) for $33,000, drive-out. Is that possible? I live in the Houston area. I wouldn't mind driving to Beaumont if the price is right. Anyone bought a TL in Beaumont recently?

Anybody have any input on how much I should ask for a Blue/Camel or Blue/grey non-navi 5AT TL in the Cleveland area? I see everything from $30,500 - $32,000 on this board? I don't know what is fair for this area?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm currently getting offered $29,900 for a 2004 TL, but the dealer is adding a $245 processing fee. I've done all the negotiating on the phone or email, and so I asked him to send me a break down of the price, w/ an out the door price. He first sent me just the base, and an out the door price. Realizing that there was a $1,200 difference, and that taxes don't cost that much, I asked him to break it down again, and found the $245 processing fee. Are dealers willing to get rid of it? It seems to me, they are just raising the price of the car, which lowering the base price. Need an answer ASAP, thanks!

Any feedback on what the midwest market is on an anthracite auto with navi? Have been offered $500 off of sticker.

aaargh - I live in Columbus and talked with both dealers here, as well as the dealer in Marion, and the dealer in Cleveland. The dealer in Cleveland told me $32,200 was bottom line (non-nav, 5AT, color didn't change the price). I was ready to deal and said I would not need financing and that's when he ran me off the lot, told me the finance dept. wouldn't accept internet/credit union financing. Dealership in Marion (Mathews) is willing to deal as well as Lindsay in Columbus. Drive two hours and get better service and a better deal. Anthracite/Quartz non-nav 5AT with all-season mats, trunk tray, wheel locks for $31,500. Probably could have pitted the two against one another and eeked out a few hundred better on the end of the deal, but I bought in Columbus and had my car inside of two weeks. Very Happy in Columbus....

I purchased a 2004 TL six speed nav for $1000 off of list about 3 months ago. As far as various fees go, I do not give then much thought. I am only interested in the out the door price. If one dealer says $1500 off and then adds fees that total an additional $500, they net out to the same as the guy who says $1000 off and no fees. Years ago, dealers used to charge a dealers prep fee... then sometimes there was an advertising fee. So to say if a fee is reasonable or not may not be that relevant. It is more likely whether the out the door price is reasonable or not. The only concern of the out the door price when comparing in this forum is that different states have different sales tax.
  • hals120hals120 Member Posts: 20
3 miles on the odometer when I picked it up. I paid extra for wheel locks, trunk mat and door edge guards, but at a discount. I still saved 1500 over what I was being quoted here in the DC/VA/MD area.

hi guys! anybody know how much is the money factor and residual value for this car? i'm planning to lease it for 36 months, 12000mi/year. thanks in advance.
  • mdhaukemdhauke Member Posts: 202
There is actual costs the dealer has to pay for registering your car and getting the license for it. Also if there is a required safety or emissions check that they have to do on the car. That is what most of the Document fee covers.
  • klee3klee3 Member Posts: 57
They're selling the TL to you at $29,9000?? The invoice is $30,300! How much is the drive-out price? With such a great deal, I wouldn't worry about the $245 processing fee. You're getting a great deal!!
  • aaarghaaargh Member Posts: 230
I've read what great deals are available in Philly/NJ/VA and am considering flying/driving from Ohio to purchase there. How do they handle registration for out of state buyers?

I assume I pay taxes based on where I buy it. What is the tax rate in Philly and NJ (Or Virginia)
  • kevdkevd Member Posts: 19
I wouldn't complain about $245 when you're getting the car under invoice. That's still a great deal, where are you located? Dealer?

    Hi All,

(I started this thread in Problems and Solutions, but it's more a question for this forum now...).

A new '04 6MT was delivered to my house last week. Very quickly off I realized that this was not a new vehicle - there was nicks and scuffs on the interior trim and there was an unusual wear pattern in the driver's lether seat.

The sales rep (Silverhill Acura in Calgary) pointed out these things to me (that I didn't even notice) that they said will be replaced.

Then within 45 minutes after the sales person left, the clutch started showing problems. Then just became undrivable. Seriously. The next day they are towing the car away and it's been in the shop for a week now.

Originally I thought this might be a manufacturing anomaly, but now I'm not so sure. I just found out that the vehicle was actually a showroom demo that was dealer traded to Silverhill in Alberta.

I negotiated a price based on a NEW vehicle, not a showroom demo. Do I have reason to be upset here? Correct me if I'm wrong but the Market Value of a showroom demo should not be equal to a car fresh 'off the truck'...?

Silverhill has dealt with these problems admirably by giving me a good loaner from their Used Lot and have been great, but I'm reasonably sure we would NOT have had all these problems if it was a new car in the first place.

I've got a call into the GM of Silverhill, I'll post an update after I talk to him.

    Corey.

I was offered $31,900 last night on a silver 6 speed (obviously manual) with Summer tires (No Navi).

I wanted to pay $30,500 but the dealer wasn't interested...

Does anyone have insight on where the breaking point is on this?

I wonder if another $500 would have sealed the deal.

What's your sense of the premium for sticks in So Cal at the moment? Apparently there are only 15 or so around.

What kind of miles did it have when you got it? I mean, if it just sat there and people merely poked, prodded, and fondled it, I don't think its a big deal, personally. But that's just it. I think its a real subjective and personal kinda thing. Some folks want to own a car that nobody else has even breathed in. Some (like me) only care that nobody has taken it for a test drive out of fear that it was potentially abused from a mechanical standpoint.

Is this price around $1500 over invoice? You may be able to find a lower price, but you'll probably have to order it and wait 6 weeks or so. If it is the color you want, try to increase your offer a few hundred dollars and see if they bite. They might be holding off for someone to pay full MSRP on this car. If you are going to finance it, getting a good rate (less than the dealer's) may help make up for the higher price.

    An update:

I just talked with the GM of Silverhill Acura and he said unequivocably that that blown clutch could not have been in any way caused by in-showroom abuse. He went on further to say that they have to ship the blown (flywheel) to Honda for warantee reimbursement and they couldn't do that if it was becasue of abuse.

And as far as all the trim nicks and scuffs that WERE likely caused by Joe Buyer and his kiddies climbing all over (my) car, they have proactively replaced all the fixtures and left everything spanking new.

So I'm satisfied that I was worried over nothing - and big kudos to Silverhill management and Service for how they dealt with this.

    Corey.

You pay taxes to the state where your car will be registered(Ohio in your case). I live in Washington DC, and last August I did the opposite of what you are talking about. I purchased a 2003 MDX from Lindsay Acura in Columbus, Ohio, and had it delivered to to my house in DC. I had a 25 day Ohio temporary registration, and when I received the title, I took the Vehicle to the DC DMV, to pay the taxes and put tags on it.

klee3: "They're selling the TL to you at $29,900?? The invoice is $30,300!"

Actually, the invoice is $29,755. The $545 destination charge is not included in the invoice, and usually added on top.

Regarding a couple of recent posts ...

Please check the header of this discussion (or our Rules of the Road linked at the top) for the kind of sales information which may and may not be shared within the Town Hall.

The Town Hall may not be used to pass on salepeople's names, contact info, etc. Asking people to email you with, or for, that information is using the Town Hall to do that, so that's not an okay thing to do, either.

    We appreciate your understanding.

The NY dealer I bought my car from will be sending the state sales tax payments to Virginia DMV, and using an agent, get my plates at the same time. They will then send me the plates by overnight mail. It cost 100 bucks, but I figure its worth it, given the great deal I got.

The tax rate for new vehicles in VA is 3%.

I just bought a MT no-nav for $30,300 in NJ. Lease price is $385 for 48 months. 12K per year. I decided to have them finance the last 3 months of my current lease so I am actually paying $415 per month and they cut me a check for $1245.

They gave me temp non-resident plates and had a runner get the MA plates for me while I was in NJ for a few days business.
  • klee3klee3 Member Posts: 57
I know. That's why I had asked for the drive-out price. Check my original post. I wanted to know whether the destination charge was included in the $29,900 or not. Besides, they will add it to the price of the car regardless.

Even if it was not included, the invoice + destination would be around $30,500. Who would not pay this amount for a TL? I know I would do it without hesitation. Unfortunately, the dealerships in the Houston area are still asking for $32,000 + TTL, at a minimum.

    Howdy all,

Been following the thread for awhile and wanted to chime in with a "what do you think?" post.

My local Portland Acura dealer her has the 2004 TL that I want, Silver w/Ebony interior, Auto, etc. The only real difference is that I am adding the A-spec kit which costs roughly $6k inc. installation.

When you subtract out tax, that is a price of $38,221. Subtract out the A-Spec kit and that leaves the price at $32,221.

First question, that seems to be in line, at least within a couple hundred, of what others are getting their non-navi TLs for. Does that seem right to you?

Secondly, insights on the A-Spec? Seems a bit pricey and you could certainly add after market components (tires, wheels, etc) along with the factory molding options for a bit less.

Thoughts on any of this? Oh and btw, for me the choice of vehicles came down to the TL or a BMW 530i. Just seems that, while a different car altogether, the TL is similar enough to me that it is tough to spend the extra $16k for the BMW I want.

    Thanks

    Jeff

But, spending $6K on bigger brakes, tires, wheels and body cladding changes the car from being a good value to being over-priced. That is a lot of money for what is mostly cosmetics.

You can figure on getting about $1K of that back on re-sale.

IMHO, a $2k investment for NAVI would be better off than $6k for A-SPEC! Besides, if you're really keen on performance perhaps you should get the 6MT w/performance tires instead of Auto!
  • habitat1habitat1 Member Posts: 4,282
I agree with kyfdx and 1violinist.

I suggest you make darn sure that before you spend $6k on a set of cosmetic junk and a few limited value suspension upgrades that you want to keep that car for the next 10+ years. I think you'd get absolutely hammered on resale. The luxury minded buyer would want navigation and not A spec, the enthusiast driver would want a six speed (and I, for one, still wouldn't want A spec).

As for the A spec kit itself, one of the major mags just tested one and found the kit to make almost no difference in handling compared to the standard 6-speed. At least with BMW's sport package, you get a true serious handling upgrade that you can feel, excellent sport seats and other useful items, without the tacky cosmetic add ons for about 40% of the cost of A-spec.

Spend your money as you wish, but suggesting you can't justify the incremental cost of a 5-series and then dropping $6k on an A-spec package is a contradiction in my book.

My experience with Lindsay Acura was outstanding! Go to the MDX board titled "prices paid and buying experience" and read post #564. That describes my deal in detail. Since my purchase I know of two other people in the DC area who also purchased MDX's.
  • aaarghaaargh Member Posts: 230
Well, I won't need to deal with Lindsay, I did the deal here in Cleveland last night. You were right, the started me at $32,200. But, I'm financing through them, and had a trade-in. I paid about $250 more than I wanted for the car, but got more than I expected for the trade in, so it almost equalled out. In the end I was $300 (out the door) higher than what I wanted. For $300, I won't worry about going out of town.

Here are the details on the TL itself:

    Car: $31,749
    Doc: $100
    License: $19.50

Not the best price I've seen, but good enough for me to stay in town.
  • multiplechoicemultiplechoice Member Posts: 113
The A-spec package is way overpriced. Not worth the money and you'll get very little in return in terms of resale value. The above mentioned "big brakes" are included with the 6 sp manual transmission not part of the A-spec package. If you are more "sports-minded" and cost conscious, you really need to consider the Infiniti G35 sedan. The dealers are trying hard to move these vehicles with significant discounts. Several magazines have compared the G35 to the Acura and each has concluded that the G35 drives better (no torque steer due to RWD). Personally,I think I am seeing too many TL's, losing its visual impact. For value, look to a G35. Even though it does not have the electronic gadgets like bluetooth and the DVD audio system. If you think you want a 5 series, maybe you should wait. Unconfirmed rumor has it that the new 6 cylinder engine will have around 270hp.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,793
just based on history of resale values, I'd much rather take an Acura/Honda over an Infinity/Nissan given the choice. Magazine comparos don't typically take that kind of info into consideration... ya know, the real world stuff that us lowly folks who actually pay for our cars gotta contend with. ;)

But this certainly aint the place for this discussion... moving on.

I prefer Navigation better than A-spec too.

Driving in real world consist of 85% straight line and 15% turning. 1/8 of that 15% might need good handling. TL's handling is not the best but ranked 3rd before G & BMW.

After years in the market, G hasnt reached TL's record of monthly sales.

Reliability, reputation, more hp, exterior/interior, resale value, mpg etc do matter in real world.

$33k for exclusivity is impossible, btw I see a lot of BMW on the street too and BMW is more than $33k.

Just picked up my brand new 2004 Silver TL w/ Quartz interior. The price I paid was $29,900, which INCLUDED destination charge, but there was a $245 processing fee, that they said always gets charged in the state of VA. The price was good, so I didn't want to argue too much. I got the Protection Package(all weather floor mats, trunk tray, mud guards, wheel locks) thrown in for free, as well as Lifetime oil changes and inspection for Free. The dealer is Radly Acura in Falls Church, VA. They have a great internet manager, whose name I know I can't mention. He actually told me that most people don't know about the protection package, so thanks to this forum I was able to take good advantage of that package. I made the entire deal over email and the phone, I was coming from my school, and didn't want to waste time trying to haggle. The paperwork was filled out when I go there, still took a couple of hours, but there was no dealing when I got there, just what we had previously decided on. I hope this information helps...

Thanks to everyone that posts here, after 3 months of reading this board I finally bought it...grey/ebony, AT non-navi, $30,600. Thought I was getting a bonus with the protection package thrown in, now I'm thinking most everyone gets that included too. Mine only included the trunk tray, splash guards and wheel locks, no floor mats which would have been nice. I'm in Eastern PA and I got prices from every dealership within a 2 hour drive [which luckily includes NJ, DE, Philly area] and ended up making the deal at the place closest to me. Also worked out a deal so that new tires [which i'm having a tire dealer ship to the acura dealer] will be traded out and mounted at no extra charge. I think I got a good deal, but I may wake up in the morning with buyer's remorse--never saw myself spending this much on a car!

I am hearing that Verizon doesn't support bluetooth. I would like to use this feature but not sure if phone service will accommodate. Thanks for any advice from TL owners who have used the bluetooth feature in the TL including wireless company that you use.
  • amanaman Member Posts: 2
Bluetooth is a technology supported / implemented by your particular cell phone model that allows wireless communication between your phone/device and some other bluetooth enabled device (in this case your car). It has nothing to do with your wireless provider, but everything to do with your phone equipment. You have to check if your particular phone model has bluetooth. I know nokia 3650 has it. Might be a good idea to actually verify this during the test-drive.
  • wr_gwr_g Member Posts: 33
    Thanks aman,

I have an old phone but don't mind replacing it with a bluetooth enabled phone. Your response sounds right to me but still a little skeptical given what I have been told by Verizon that they don't support bluetooth. Any TL owners out there that have used the bluetooth feature on the TL and can provide insight?

Just picked up blue/quartz TL Auto w/NAV with trunk tray, splash guards, wheel locks and first three oil changes included. I had ordered it on March 22. Here's the breakdown:

    Price - $33,295.00
    NJ Tax (6%) - $ 1,997.70
    Doc Fee - $ 157.00
    Registration - $ 96.00

    Total - $35,545.70

    Downpayment - $12,000.00 cash (No trade-in)
    Interest Rate - 3.59%

I purchased from Bridgewater Acura in New Jersey. I got the same offer from Montclair (NJ) Acura, which would have thrown in maintenance program, including all oil changes for 3 years/36,000 miles, but I wasn't going to drive there for maintenance anyway so I decided to go with the local dealer instead. My experience with Bridgewater Acura was excellent. I shopped around quite a bit and the salesman was definitely the most straight-forward and (apparently) honest one that I encountered.

Thank you all for your posts. This board has been a valuable resource and your help is very much appreciated.

I'm a New Jersey resident and saw your post regarding the deal you got on a TL in NJ.

The lease on my 2001 TL comes due on 6/30/04. I'm looking to lease an '04 TL 5 Speed AT, no navi for 48 months and am starting my search.

Can you please tell me the dealership, your salesperson and whether it was a good experience?

Enjoy your new TL and thanks for your help.
