I had agreed on price for a 2016 SE at $31,400 cap cost. Just noticed a lease special with 36/12k with no initial payment and 35 months at $370. My question is where does the first month payment come from. Does the dealer simply add this to the cap cost? How is the $500 lease cash applied? The dealer has said no lease cash.

On the $0 due at lease signing deal, the dealer has to cover the first payment

Residual values are set by the bank and cannot be modified or negotiated.

However, my numbers show either 57% (EX-L) or 55% (RES or NAV) for 36/12 on the 2016 Odyssey.

Thanks Michaell for the reply. I am new to this lease thing and am wondering if location makes a difference. The current quote I get is the following:
$449 for 36 months, tax included, with $0 down, 12k miles per year.
$749 due at signing for first month payment and DMV fees.
Is this a good deal?

We would need to know the MSRP and the net cap cost (selling price + taxes, fees - down payment) to know for sure.

MSRP $36825, selling price $33742, tax rate is 8.875%, no down payment
I have also noticed that 2016 Odyssey SE has 57% residual for the $370/month 36/12k lease deal, but only 55% residual value when I try to negotiate a 36/10k lease. Very strange.

Thanks kyfdx. Earlier on this board your answer to the same trim in December was 55% for NJ. The difference 2% comes from location or time of the month? Another question is this; Two Honda dealers in Baltimore quoted me different residual %-- one said 55% residual for 15K and another said 53% for the same mileage/yer-- could it be possible to face a higher residual % than MD rate (53%)?

New numbers were released on 10 December.

I don't think the residuals changed on December 10th. It's possible that I missed the "with NAV", the first time. 53% is definitely correct for 36/15 for the 2016 EX-L with NAV.

Without NAV, it's 55%.

Wanted to share my lease experience on a 2016 Touring Elite here in the Bay Area to add to all the great information here. My situation was a bit more unique as our lease on a 2013 Elite was ending next month. We planned on taking out a two or three year loan to buy out the lease. With loans rates around 3% for lease buyouts versus 1.176% for a new lease through Honda along with the perks of a warranty and new car smell, leasing a new Odyssey was tempting.

I got my 2013 Odyssey under a very rare situation where I got a dealer to quickly agree to the invoice price, less any incentives at the base money factor. I did not think I’d be as lucky this time, especially because I had a leased car to turn in. I decided to try just one time with my nearest dealer to see if they could apply the equity in my leased Odyssey and combine it with any incentives and discounts they wanted to apply to end up with a new 2016 Elite lease with only the first month’s payment, title and lease fee out of pocket and stick with my monthly fee of $530/mo including a 8.75% sales tax. I managed to get my 2013 Odyssey at this monthly payment for about $1200 out the door. Based on the deals other people were getting here, I felt it should be fairly easy to get the same deal with at least $3k in equity on my 2013 Odyssey as trade in.

It took a couple rounds of negotiation. It really helped that I was completely ready to walk out and buy out our 2013 Odyssey. In the end here’s what we ended up with. You can do the math to get specific numbers. I left it up to them to determine the right balance of discount on the 2016 Elite and equity on the 2013 Elite to get to the monthly payment I wanted.

MSRP $45,650
Negotiated Price $41,200
Cap cost reduction $562 (portion taken from trade-in)
Final monthly lease was $562/mo including a 8.75% sales tax at 12k miles/yr for 36 months
$0 out of pocket. They gave about $1600 in trade-in for the 2013 Elite which they applied towards cap cost reduction, first month’s payment, title and lease fees. So $30/mo more but, $0 out of pocket.

I was very happy with this deal as I got it done in about three hours and didn’t have to visit and talk to multiple dealers. I could have bought out the 2013 Elite and tried to sell it myself to get the $3-4k in equity and search far and wide to find a dealer to sell me a 2016 Elite at invoice less incentives but that would have take at least two weeks to complete and hours of time.

So one point I’m trying to make is don’t give away your equity on your leased Honda especially if you want a new one. Our 2013 Elite had a few hundred dollars of mild dents and scratches we would have been charged for if we just turned it in at lease end. Instead we got back $1600 in trade-in and avoided my last two payments. The buy out on the 2013 Elite was about $23k and local dealers were asking $28-29k for them as CPO models.

One more tip on your Honda shopping is to google “Weymouth Honda” which gives lease payments based on base money factors and invoice pricing to quickly find a low price to base your negotiations on.

Residuals for 39 months are 2% lower. Not worth it, IMO.
