$518/mo w $3k down. $592/mo with just 1st payment down. 12k miles/yr $545/mo w $3k down $618/mo with just 1st payment down. 15k miles/yr Both payments include all taxes and fees.
So, of the $3K they are asking for, about $1K for fees, and I assume the rest is considered "down payment"
As noted before, we don't recommend that. Your payment will go up about $55/mo without the down (2000 / 36), but still less than the payment the dealer is quoting.
Something still seems off. Confirm that the selling price is the same as the net capitalized cost - if not, find out what the dealer has added.
their breakdown for a $591 payment is as follows: Selling price: $43,000 MF: .0019 Residual $29,634 Cash down: $600 License fee: $213 Taxes: $1902.59 Doc Fee: $150 Aquisition Fee: $650
What state is this? If it's Washington, then tax is applied to the monthly payment, not charged up front.
Using $45,600 as the MSRP, $43,000 as the cap cost, 63% residual (36/15 for AWD Limited Platinum) and .00190 as the MF, I get $533/mo. Add 9.2% tax, and the payment goes to $582/mo.
So, closer to the $591/mo quote, but still about $325 difference somewhere.
If I subtract the $600 "down" from the $43,000 selling price, the payment drops to $562/mo with tax added in.
Numbers still aren't adding up to the dealer quote.
Ask the dealer specifically for the net capitalized cost - if different than the selling price, make them explain to your satisfaction what they've added.

But, I still don't understand the tax situation. I get the $589 by adding 9.2% tax to the base payment, but in your numbers there is $1900 of tax assessed. Can't be both.

Can you please provide the MF and RV for a 2016 limited in California? 36 months, 12k/year. For FWD and for AWD.
Thanks!
Maybe I should specify that this is for the Los Angeles area (if it makes a difference).
.00190 MF and 66% for FWD, 67% for AWD
One more question: how much does each MSD reduce the MF? And what is the max number of MSDs? Thanks.
We don't have any details on the Toyota MSD program. Read back through the last few pages of this discussion to see what others have posted on the subject.

their explanation was the first payment was in their city with a higher tax rate but once recorded with the state and Toyota it will reduce down to the tax rate of the city I live (8%) and be BASE PAYMENT 539.25, at 8% (43.14) payment goes to 582.39. same for any excess license fees collected. if my city has a lower rate, the state will refund any overage paid. So that pretty much explains that. Now I just have to choose which of the two rides I want to go with. I asked you to look over the Lexus lease I was also offered over on the other thread. thanks for your time!

That still seems hinkey. Usually sales tax is calculated based on the registration address, not the selling address. But, if you're comfortable with it, then choose which vehicle you will enjoy driving for the next three years.
Thank for the prompt response. The car is experiencing issues that are no longer under warranty and it's best to get out. Last week was $170 in faulty indicator lights, due to an electrical grounding issues, also needs tires around 5k miles ago. All payments for mileage / lease payments are included in the $2500 down / $450 mo. No additional out of pocket.
Hi Michael, can you please advise? Thank you.
So, if the $2500 up front covers the prior lease charges, are the acquisition / dealer fees being added to the negotiated selling price? What is the net cap cost, after all these additions?
$450/mo seems to be OK, but until we have all the details, it's all guesswork.

Please advise regarding this deal.
If you are 'trading in' the old Highlander, it would work like any other trade in. Find the current payoff value, and get the trade value (take it to CarMax for a buyout offer, or use the "real world trade in values" discussion here at Edmunds). Then, you'll know if you have positive or negative equity, and how much. I doubt very seriously that you're $2800 upside down on a car that holds its value as well as a Highlander.
What is the negotiated selling price of the new Highlander? You should be able to get a little bit of a discount from sticker.
Regarding capitalized cost reduction (aka down payment) - other that the upfront taxes and fees, we recommend no other cash out of pocket at lease inception. If the car is stolen or totaled, that money is lost.
$37,054.64 - is the negotiated selling price. The deal is done with all of the details above, how did I do using these facts? Thanks.
Given all the charges associated with your old lease, and the high MF for the Highlander, I'd say you did well with your $450/mo payment on a $40K vehicle.
OLD LEASE: 2013 Highlander LE 7 Payments left (November end) $17,204 residual Very low miles (15,500mi) - Perfect condition $350 Disposition Fee This payment is $299/mo before taxes, gap, wear & tear ($379 total). Paid no money down - just taxes, fees and first payment (total$800) - (and I believe that the dealership paid 1,500 down on our behalf, hidden from us, but I saw this on the paperwork today (as EQUITY on their paperwork, but we never traded in or put any money down and it's not reflected in our paperwork)
NEW LEASE if jumped into today (these numbers are the "ballpark", unnegotiated # from the dealer)
2016 Highlander XLE 38,163 MRSP 26,353 RES 37,534 Gross Cap (MF not directly quoted) Originally said payment was $505 p/m without taxes, abridged to $463 plus taxes after I asked for a breakdown. $1,000 down (said to cover the taxes & other fees up front but I somehow doubt this, and think that'll be tacked on.) 36 months/ 12,000 miles
What's the right thing to do here? First, I know I can lower the price, from the 38,163 MRSP, but I feel that if 2013 Highlanders with low miles are selling for 20-23K, then I should profit in some way from the 17K residual price --
Also see that it was suggested that the original lease be treated as a trade-in - I like that idea and that's what I've suggested to my husband but unsure how to value that. Thoughts?

Arm yourself with information. Call TFS and find out the payoff value of your current lease. Then, hit up your local CarMax to have them make you a cash offer. Also, check out the 'real world trade in values' discussion for an honest evaluation. That way, you'll know if you have a positive or negative equity situation.
Don't think of it as "i have x payments of $y" - your current lease is evaluated like any other trade.
I would also ask about the MF on the new lease - base rate is .00190, but dealer can mark it up for extra profit.
Hi! I am new to leasing and I was really hoping to get some advice or direction on my lease.

You always suggest not to put anything down, right? I'd be fine with around $400 a month. Is this a good monthly?

There is a difference between the up front costs of a lease and a down payment. OK to do the former; we don't recommend the latter.

Can you explain what you mean by "sort of an estimate" just for my own education?
Thanks again!

2016 Highlander XLE
From WA , I got a sale price of 37,500. MSRP 39770. RV of $27839. MF 0.00200. Acquisition fee $650. 36/12k . I am sure you probably need more info. But what is a ball park range I should expect for a monthly payment. Anything helps.
Thanks!

There is a difference between the up front costs of a lease and a down payment. OK to do the former; we don't recommend the latter.

i had a trade in equity of of 2200 ( could be more if keep negotiating). But he kept rolling it in as a tax credit. Is this necessary ?
Can't remeber the numbers but I was getting a lower rate for 26 mo and the final 10mo were increased.
What should my numbers look like?
What state and tax rate is this? Toyota numbers are regional.
How many miles per year are you looking for?
Some of the trade equity can be used to cover the up front taxes and fees, but you should ask for the rest back as a check from the dealership.
