4-hr rental that crashed at 1:30am. I'd expect both the company and the clientelle of such rentals to keep more reasonable hours.

I like how he blames the tires. Would be amazing if we could have sophisticated simulations give him 10 different brands and types of tires, all in random stages of wear.

I have a feeling he'd crash in 99.99% of these simulations.

The LEO seems to blame the driver with maybe just a little well-deserved snark. Good luck blaming the tires. Reminds me of the M4 driver in the viral Youtube video who overcooked it pulling out of a cars and coffee style meet, and blamed tire pressure.

I-5 is pretty straight through that tunnel, isn't it?

I'll guess he was going pretty fast and made a twitchy maneuver

It's straight at Olive, but coming out of a gentle curve, which could have been the start of the problems at triple digit speeds and wet roads. It'd be interesting to know the insurance situation.

If you want to drive fast on wet roads, get an Audi.

If you want to end up on YouTube get a high-powered 2WD car.

I'm sure someone will now link me to some Audi FAIL videos?

well, as I know you know, no car can defy physics. AWD just means all wheels spinning frantically when you overcome the traction of the tires. :)

Correct---all AWD does is allow you to accelerate better. It does nothing for "handling" or "braking" per se, unless the dynamics of acceleration are in play. And once tire limits are met, ain't nothin' gonna save you.

So once you point the car in the right direction, you can accelerate out of trouble better.

I remember the Audi S4's vectoring sport rear diff would argue with you though. That feature definitely gave the heavy car more handling capability to power through turns, if you so choosed to do, but man would you burn up those front tires fast. Sort of a simultaneous under and over-steer situation.

Well, maybe, if acceleration is the right thing to do in the situation, and if your tires permit it. Unlike older AWD, modern AWD cars with all the computer controls are nearly impossible to get into awkward situations, but if you do exceed the car's cornering limits, it's going to be all the harder for most drivers to recover an AWD car.

I liked the Toyota Corolla hatchback's predecessor, the Scion iM/Toyota Corolla iM, too. Both cars would make a good replacement for the 2011 Kia Soul, but Kia makes such a durable car our 98,875 current mileage is likely just the beginning of a long relationship.

It'll be interesting to see it next to the 201HP Elantra hatch, also available with a 6MT (Europe gets a 275HP performance package).

The Corolla has 168, which is pretty good for the size and probably better for economy. But likely won't be nearly as much fun; I think it'll miss getting the hot hatch designation.

    Warm Hatch, perhaps?

I saw where Top Gear tested the Hyundai i30 N - the 270HP version of the Elantra GT. They really liked it.

A Mini Cooper S has about the same HP as the Corolla, and it's pretty peppy. Of course, it has either a supercharger or turbo depending on year.

My Jetta only has 150 HP, but because it has a turbo, it too feels pretty good when I exercise my right foot.

If it's naturally aspirated, then all bets are off.

    2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback

I think Toyota pretty much hit it right out of the park with the new Corolla hatch. The sedan is another story, though I need the info. on that one moreso before I'd even comment on it. One thing odd or even annoying about the '19 Corolla hatch is that Toyota left out Android Auto but includes Apple CarPlay. Humm...Toyota, why did you do that?

If I did get a wild hair one fine day about buying a Toyota Corolla hatchback, I wouldn't let the lack of Android Auto get in the way, however. I notice a whole pallet of other electronic goodies included, including what ought ta be obligatory these days, a USB connection on the dash somewhere.

Exactly what Shifty said. Credit is relative to the blandboxes Toyota has been plying us with for 20 years. This probably won't rust like an early Mazda3, too B)

I still suspect 95% of sales will be trunkback Corolla, and it will still be a magnet for those who don't care much for cars nor driving.

Toyota's been selling hatchbacks pretty much everywhere but the US, so no 'copying' involved. US just doesn't like them much, unless it's a CUV.

Saw my first Tesla 3, reminded me of those horror shows where the character has no mouth...

The mouthless facelifted Teslas remind me of "Twilight Zone, The Movie", with the mouthless girl.

My boss just got a new E400 wagon (her husband works for MB on the IT side, and they get it on an insane sweetheart employee lease). Nice car, the ICE requires learning coming from a 2013 Forester.

Never order an E400 wagon in black--the resemblance to a hearse is just too close.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,534
Here is dark blue with brown interior, similar (different blue) to my car. Pretty sharp with the contrast with the chrome/silver bits, but not the boring black on black that has been trendy for a long time.

parked at shop rite, a Stelvio. Nice looking. But that over styled angled rear that likely leads to disappointingly small cargo capacity.

and 2 new Sube Crosstreks. Both bright blue. Not that color, but I really do like this car. Just need to get some more power in the poor thing.

Tesla is being rocked lately by some rather unfortunate developments:

    1. Based on information from current and former Tesla employees, Kolodny reported that several machine shops in the Fremont CA area are now being tasked with reworking defective parts for the Models S, X, and 3. The article includes photos of large stacks of parts in the yard of one of the machine shops.

    2. CoverDrive’s GAAP forecast is for a loss of $648 million in Q3 and $545 million in Q4 of 2018. (note: GAAP is only one way of calculation, and Musk uses another metric).

    3. Last year, several plaintiffs filed a lawsuit called Wochos, et al. v. Tesla, Inc., et al. in California federal court. The thrust of the suit is that the defendants knew mass production of the Model 3 during 2017 was impossible, and also knew Tesla could never achieve the rate of 5,000 per week by year end, but all the same stated repeatedly that Tesla would be able to do so. This amounts, say the plaintiffs, to actionable securities fraud and breach of fiduciary duty. (note: There is a petition to make this a Class Action for all Tesla shareholders, but not yet granted).

Nonetheless, Tesla's stock price, while not near the heady days of yesteryear, isn't that far off the mark of this time last year. It is, however, getting beat up today a bit.

For most of my working career GAAP was gospel. Then suddenly about 8 or 9 years ago it was replaced with IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), and another set of standards called ASPE (Accounting Standard for Private Enterprise) also emerged. So they could either be losing money, losing a lot of money, or losing a whole lot of money.
