That X1 in NJ has some significant curb rash for a CPO - it makes me wonder how thorough their inspection really was. The red interior is interesting - and not in a good way for me anyway, but some may really like it.
Pretty sure they aren't going to replace or even refurbish wheels just to CPO a unit. That would add significant cost and they'd have a hard time selling it at the resulting inflated price.

well, there will be plenty of VWs a few months from now too. and continued large incentives to keep them moving out the door.
also, if you do just eat the costs, you will have a much easier time negotiating a "clean" lease deal. Remember, that $225 including all your payoffs. so take the trade out, and looking at what, $200? $175? In theory, the lower payment should offset your lease end OOP.
Just different pockets to the VW dealer.
I'm still trying to figure out how @breld got $166/mo for his daughters Sport - granted, that's with 10K, but that's only a 1% difference. Residuals have been higher on the Sport than the SE, but there is a higher price, as well.
Just looked up the particulars on our lease deal:
MSRP was around $23,250 Got down to a cap cost of $19,232 58% residual (at only 10k miles/year, 36 months) MF of .00002
$166/month before taxes.
This was a deal that one dealer rejected and didn't even come back with a counter. McDonald VW agreed pretty quickly. I think this was the 3rd car I've purchased from them in relatively recent history, so maybe that helped, but just thought I'd give you our experience as a gauge.
first is free. and for me, they offered (I did not even ask) to through in the 2nd and 3rd.
It is your basic OFL, rotation, and inspection/fluids top up. I can't imagine it being more than $100. but look for coupons from different dealers.
I get the same stuff done on my RDX at the dealer, and even rack rate (no coupon) is only about 50-60 dollars.
Yeah, they wanted to sell me the prepaid package for $389. I declined, and will look for coupons from local dealers.
I almost forgot - I did buy that offer on the maintenance, mostly so it would be easy for my stepdaughter to visit the local VW dealer up in Ft Collins for service. Seems I may have overpaid, but oh well.
Nice - seems rare to find one with the navigation on these X1s. Whether you need it or not, I do think it dresses up the interior a bit with the nice interface and controller knob.
Funny how these X1s are getting a lot of attention now here on our board. I remember liking them quite a bit when they first came out - wife has never been much of a fan. Perhaps at $40k or so new, they were a bit unloved, but a nice used, if not CPO, example in the high $20k's is really appealing.
My problem with the X1 is that the cargo area just does not hold that much in the older design. It doesn't feel much larger than than the space in the Golf/GTI. That could just be optics though - I've never looked.

@michaell - even though we just exchanged some texts, I suppose my congrats isn't official until it's posted here!
The Jetta gets somewhat of a bad rap due to being "americanized" and decontented with this new iteration. But as I've said before, they've slowly added back some of that content and quality with each year, and at this point, it's a real competent, if not desirable, vehicle.
Some of the competitors, like the Civic, are finally getting into the 4 cyl turbo mix, but VW has done that well for many years now. I remember driving the current version of the 1.8T in the Jetta and Passat a few years back, and thinking how distinct a feel it delivered versus something like the Accord. And that's what led me to leasing the Passat over the Accord and Mazda6 (well, that and the value). And sounds like you don't give up much with the 1.4T.
I'm always impressed with the smoothness of the stepdaughter's Jetta when I drive it. It does fill a nice gap between the compacts and mid-sized sedans.
And the gray may not be what you set out for, but honestly, it's one of my favorite colors. That's the color I wanted to get for my stepdaughter, but she really had her heart set on black.
So, Congrats! I think you made a great choice and I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. If there's any downside to owning a VW, it's the potential issues you may encounter at a higher mileage - no problem on a lease.

No, it is definitely tiny. My problem is the backseat. You can see how the edges of the seat back are actually angled inward, making it a true 4 seater, and 2 of those people have to be damned short, too. While I like the idea, it would never fit my needs.

You obviously haven't driven around here. That's very MINOR curb rash. I'm sure it's enough for BMW to charge for at the end of a lease, but not enough for the dealer to pay for 4 new rims in order to CPO a vehicle.

@rayainsw - interesting to hear that the Fusion Sport is a contender coming from the R/T. I would have thought the Fusion would have been lacking in feel in comparison to your current ride.
That speaks well for the Ford. At that discounted price of around $34k, it definitely seems like an appealing package.

Thanks for the feedback. We did have a '99 New Beetle - leased, then bought out. Fortunately it was a base model, so no power windows to fail. It wasn't without it's issues, however - a couple of unscheduled trips to the dealer, but was under warranty (manufacturer, then aftermarket when we bought it at the end of the lease).
I am, of course, having a bit of remorse at the shopping and test driving I didn't get to do. However, the folks at McDonald (Brett, the salesman and John, the GM), bent over backwards to make this deal happen. I'm pretty sure they overallowed a ton on the trade, but that's on them. I'll have to check the listings in a week or two to see what they have it listed at.
I'm pleased with the size of the Jetta - not too small, not too big. Huge trunk, however.
And, as previously noted, the color is growing on me.
Depending on how the service experience goes, I could see myself leasing a GTI or GLI in 3 years.

Colorado switched over to a new type of temporary tag a couple of months ago. In the past, the expiration date was hand written on the form, which was usually taped inside of the rear window of the vehicle. Now, the temporary tag is a fixed in the place of the license plate. I was wondering why they might have done this, then it occurred to me.
With the proliferation of the tollroads in the Denver area, the cameras can take pictures of these new temporary tags and figure out the owner information from them. I realized this as I was driving on the toll road to get home Saturday after leaving the dealership.
Jersey did the same thing a few years back. Was quite odd when I got my Miata with the old style tag. They were huge, and the dealer stuck it in the middle off the windshield. I justify took it off.

I'll probably get a bill in the mail. :@
Here in my neck of the woods, you would get a substantial bill. They really, really don't want you driving on the toll roads without an EZTag. Well, on some of the (mostly older) toll roads, they have both cash lanes and EZTag lanes. The newer toll roads are mainly EZTag only. If you do run through without an EZTag, when they run you down, you get stuck with a substantial penalty.
Back 2 or 3 years ago, when I sold the 2008 Passat, the buyer never actually registered the car in his name. The way I found out, HCTRA (Harris County Toll Road Authority) sent me a bill for several hundred dollars. Luckily I was able to prove that I had sold the car more than a year previously. The guy was driving around with expired plates, and running through EZTag lanes with no EZTag. I wouldn't want to be him when they eventually caught up with him.
All the toll roads are monitored via camera. There are two prices - one if you don't have an account, one if you do. We do have an account, but we don't use transponders, just the VTOLL - video toll. Our license plates are on file with the toll agency.
I'll probably see a bill for the non-account toll - something like .50-.75 more. Big whoop.
But, reminds me to update the profile when I do get new plates. Not sure I want to use the ones from the Elantra.
Five months ago, my oldest nephew bought a GTI through Carmax. Can't remember the details, but I want to say it's a 2011 and it had about 50K on the clock.
The car was in the shop twice in the first five weeks of ownership - both times to replace failed coil packs.
Last week, the car dies in an intersection. The check engine light came as did the power steering light. Carmax couldn't see the car until early September, so they took it to the VW store next door. They came back with a list of problems that needs to be addressed, to the tune of $6000!
Now, I'm sure some of this is the VW store padding the estimate with anything and everything that could be fixed. Still, my sister and her son are both upset with this nasty turn of events. She called me Saturday to fill me in on all this and ask my opinion as to what to do going forward.
No, there isn't an extended warranty on the GTI. My nephew put close to $4K down, so it's likely he's not buried in the loan.
I suggested she go back to Carmax and have a polite conversation with them about their options. Ideally, she'd like to ditch the GTI for something more, ahem, "reliable". Told her that's certainly an option, and to discuss the possibility of some goodwill from the Carfax folks for another sale, by giving them a good trade value on the GTI.
I've also suggested she not mention the litany of issues found by the VW dealer - at this time. All Carmax knows is that there is a problem that needs to be looked at.
But, I figured it can't hurt to solicit an opinion from the folks here, as well.
I told her about my new Jetta lease and what I'm paying - I believe it's a similar payment to what they're paying on the GTI. Not sure she wants to go new, and at the moment, she's feels burned by VW.
OK, fine. Lots of cheap leases out there. Kid is in junior college at the moment, and will be going to a 4 year school next fall. Not sure if that's close to home or not - which could complicate the miles on a lease.
Not surprising. After we bought our '87 BMW, took it to the local BMW indy specialist and asked for a PPI (even though we already owned it). Came back with a list of $6000 of repairs. "Uh, we paid $4K for this car, what does it really need right now?" About $1000 worth, it turned out.
try and twist arms since it is dead and get carmax to look at it sooner. see what they will do to fix it, and if not, try to get trade adjustment (basically swap for something else comparable price, so trade at retail).
And, on another repair note. Went to pickup the wife's X3 on Saturday. That belt coming off the faulty pulley really did a number on quite a few other things. Guessing if you had to pay for it, it would have been around $1000 (belts, hoses, other pulleys).
Of course, when I discussed it with the SA on Friday, he said there would be no charge (well, duh). And, he put me in for a full detail on our next visit. Nice gesture, but it's an overpriced $250 wash/wax/interior job. So, at pickup time (SA was off on Saturday), I played dumb and said I thought the original faulty repair job was being credited. The service manager on duty came out, and looked over the original repair bill, and the extensive re-work needed. Said he would get with my SA, and verify what we discussed, taking into account my current whining (my characterization) about my wife getting stranded, serious damage to engine compartment, yada, yada, yada.. I offered that I would be happy with a credit against future repair/maintenance visits, as I was a loyal customer and definitely coming back. (which is true, mostly).
So, the service manager called back this morning, said I could keep the detail and a $240 credit, or they would skip the detail and give me a $491 credit against future service/repair costs ($466 repair/$25 tow).
Naturally, I took the $491 credit. I worked really hard at being civil and friendly, and it paid off. Win/Win.

I have found that being civil and accommodating in the face of someones screw up can pay off. Being pleasant has netted me money a few times in cases like this.
Yep, "one gets more with honey than vinegar" my grandmother used to say. Folks usually don't take well to folks screaming at them, a nice tone will most times get more than what's asked for. Had similar situation this weekend with AT&T and our cell phone bill. Didn't go crazy and was very polite...we got the reduction and the lower data plan by just being nice. Just makes sense. My interest in Mini's and the X1 is growing day by day. Love the BMW blue over beige and like it better than the Mini, think it'll ride better to. Figure in a couple of years, pick up a 2016 unit and take it into retirement.

You should have been able to do that right from the Mt AT&T app.
so, no particular reason, but I actually really like this one. If I was shopping now, I would take a look. Might be the color. But, well equipped, and got the HP to get out of it's own way. Doesn't seem like a bad price for the miles, and it is loaded up. Wonder what they would really take for this? Would have been a nice option for the princess's college car.
Ok I got the details from my sister on the GTI. About half is necessary work; the other half can be deferred.
Here's the necessary stuff:
remove intake manifold and perform carbon cleaning (check engine light on, fault for cold start misfire on cylinder #1) $840.63
replace faulty ABS control module, then check further, need to make sure steering angle sensor will set, cannot perform basic setting until ABS module is replaced, may need additional components if it will not set. (abs/brake/traction control/steering wheel light on) $2,306.00
The other half is a long list - 60K service, two new tires, replace valve cover gasket, etc

Funny how these X1s are getting a lot of attention now here on our board. I remember liking them quite a bit when they first came out - wife has never been much of a fan. Perhaps at $40k or so new, they were a bit unloved, but a nice used, if not CPO, example in the high $20k's is really appealing.

That speaks well for the Ford. At that discounted price of around $34k, it definitely seems like an appealing package.

With the proliferation of the tollroads in the Denver area, the cameras can take pictures of these new temporary tags and figure out the owner information from them. I realized this as I was driving on the toll road to get home Saturday after leaving the dealership.
I'll probably get a bill in the mail. :@

there seem to be a ton of 2013 and 2014 X1s out there. Must have been heavy on the leasing on these.

I'll probably see a bill for the non-account toll - something like .50-.75 more. Big whoop.
But, reminds me to update the profile when I do get new plates. Not sure I want to use the ones from the Elantra.

Though, this one isn't mine.
Thoughts? Opinions?
(c'mon - I know you've got 'em)

Win/Win.

My interest in Mini's and the X1 is growing day by day. Love the BMW blue over beige and like it better than the Mini, think it'll ride better to. Figure in a couple of years, pick up a 2016 unit and take it into retirement.
